* OverprotectiveDad: Clifton is an overprotective uncle to Holly. He disapproves her involvement in the quest, and repeatedly attempts to get her leave because he thinks it's too dangerous for her. In an interesting variation of the trope, he briefly considers trying to marry her off to someone so that she'd quit her reckless way of living.

* TheWomanWearingtheQueenlyMask: When her father was killed, and she was forced to assume his place as the leader of Burlington duchy, Fayette remains determined to fulfil her obligations and faced Ramseur’s challenge head on.

* GreaterScopeVillain: She's the mastermind behind pretty much all the conflict that happened in the game, but her presence in the game is fairly minimal, and the player never actually fights her.

* UnholyMatrimony:[[spoiler:With Ramseur]]. It is heavily implied that she gave birth to [[spoiler:Carolus and Olanta]] through him.

* TheRedBaron: All the Kaibutsu lords are given impressive titles to follow their names: Ramseur the Stratifier, Teachy the Discordian, Orrum the Ravager, Catawba the Perverse Ideologue, Manteo the Trickster, Clio the Maledictor and Elko the Perjurer.

* PoisonousFriend: [[spoiler:He rescued a young Greene from several Zebulun cult members]], and influenced him to become the madman he is known as in the game.

* OlderThanTheyLook: He doesn't look much older than Vance, but he seems to be acquainted [[spoiler:King Carolus since the first Kaibutsu War, meaning that he's at least in his 60s]]. Then, if Vance's dream/vision of him [[spoiler:walking together with ''the founder of the Govan order'']] means anything, it would make him ReallySevenHundredYearsOld.

* BitchInSheepsClothing: Marion was extremely helpful towards Vance and Fayette when they needed a transportation to reach Duke Winston. All of this is a ploy [[spoiler:to groom Fayette to be Carolus’ successor, so that she can be used to be Marion’s next puppet queen]].

* TraumaCongaLine: North experiences a long series of misfortune between the second and third act. [[spoiler:First, he is captured by pirates, separating him from his fiancée. He manages to escape, but just as he is heading home, Duke Greene blows up the town, killing everyone, including North's fiancée. Swearing revenge, North returns to his martial arts school to train, but right after he could master his final techniques, Orrum shows up and kills North's mentor (whom North considers a father figure). North the returns to Somerset to hunt Orrum down and arrives just in time to witness Orrum murder his real father and get away with it.]]
