* TheAtoner: Hachi is making every attempt to make up for what he did, and facilitated Kuroobi and Chew's parole in hopes that they'd see the light too. He outright ''prostrates'' himself to Nami in Chapter 63, but it isn't until after she witnesses him take a bullet meant for Cross that she's finally convinced he's genuine.

* ForWantOfANail: If Eustass Kid hadn't attacked Blackarm Island and renewed his hate for all pirates, he might have joined the New World Masons.

* RetiredBadass: The key word in "retired Admiral" is "Admiral". Eustass Kid may be one of the strongest Supernovas, but when he attacked Blackarm Island, he nearly got ripped in half.

* VillainRespect: While the "villain" part is ambiguous at the moment, he genuinely respects Luffy after his speech during the Strong World incident.

* BadassNormal: Similarly like Garp, Zephyr never had a Devil Fruit at all. Just pure human strength which he managed to become an Admiral during his time. And he demonstrated it by ''almost ripping Eustass Kid apart with his bare hands!''

* DarkAndTroubledPast: He lost his wife and son, and later a division of Marine cadets and his arm to pirates. Which contributes to his hatred towards them.

* HandicappedBadass: He may have lost an arm to a pirate in the past. It didn't stop him from kicking Kid's ass.
* SecretKeeper: He's aware of the fact the Masons exist, and while he doesn't plan to join them, he's kept them a secret.
* ThatManIsDead: Subverted. In the movie, Zephyr renamed himself "Z" to cement his rejection of the Marines and his former ties with them. But in the chapter "Denouement", his new Neo-Marines still refer to him as "Fleet Admiral Zephyr".
* RetiredBadass: He may be retired from being Admiral but he almost killed Eutass Kid who attacked Blackarm Island.
* TragicBigot: He hates ''all'' pirates, except maybe Luffy and the Straw Hats, but he has plenty of good reasons for it. He lost his wife and son to a pirate in the past, and more recently he lost an arm and almost all of his cadets to another pirate. And while the SBS had been on the verge of changing his mind, the Kid Pirates attacked his training grounds and reaffirmed his hatred during Enies Lobby. Not to mention whatever else he's seen of cruel pirates over his decades of service to the Navy.

* KryptoniteIsEverywhere: Thanks to being favored by the Marines, they have sea prism stone in abundance.

* IronWoobie: He's been suffering under Kaido's thumb and confined to Onigashima for ''18 years'', with any hope of escape long gone, and all of his friends elsewhere. But despite all of this, he's ''never'' lost hope.
