A former contestant on the dance-themed RealityShow ''Princess of Dance'', and now a rookie at the Scholomance. [=LaTasha=] seems surprised by the violent nature of her new school, and it's implied she may be regretting her decision to join up.

* DeliberateUnderperformance: [=LaTasha=] knows she could try to come in first in her heat during her final orientation run, but she'd have to fight off the other students who would be trying to hurt or kill her so they could win instead. She thus decides to go more slowly and let the other students in her heat fight it out for first place while she focuses on finishing at all.
* DoWellButNotPerfect: [=LaTasha=] decides that she won't try to win her heat in the official orientation course race but will instead just try to finish it. Her rank will suffer for not coming in first, but she just wants to survive the course and would rather drop a few ranks if it means she doesn't have to slug it out with the frontrunners. (Emily notes that there are only thirty-two available slots in the class and forty-eight competitors, meaning that if enough students finish the slowest ones will be rejected anyways, but [=LaTasha=] checked on how previous classes did and is sure there won't be thirty-two survivors at all, which would mean that everyone who finishes would automatically live and makes it into the class.)
* FishOutOfWater: A former dancer on a reality show who finds herself stuck in an evil magic school.
* OnlySaneMan: Unlike the other rookies, she's appropriately surprised and horrified by the actions of the other students, including the elites setting a rule that class rank is largely set by brutal wizard duels, and Julia immediately challenging the top-ranked Morgan to one of those duels.
* PartialTransformation: She is able to do this. When Natalya attacks her during an orientation training session, she shifts one of her hands into a lion's claw and rakes it across Natalya's face.
* SlowAndSteadyWinsTheRace: [=LaTasha's=] strategy during the official orientation race. Unusually, she makes it clear that this isn't about conserving stamina; she just doesn't want to be a frontrunner because then her competitors will try to kill her so they can take the lead, and she'd rather avoid that.
* StoppedCaring: She makes it clear that she couldn't care less about the ranking system or in doing dangerous physical challenges just to demonstrate her skills. As far as she's concerned, the Scholomance is run by lunatics and she just wants to keep her head down and survive until graduation.
* ThisIsACompetition: [=LaTasha=] indicates this when Emily tries to talk to her right before they both practice the orientation course for the first time. She then makes it clear that she knows how dangerous everything is and she wants to focus solely on trying to finish the course alive, not on befriending Emily.
* VoluntaryShapeshifting: She seems to be good with spells that let her do this. During her first attempt at the orientation course, her strategy is to turn into a large cheetah and use that body to run the course more easily.

An athletic Scholomance rookie from Spain. Emily quickly realizes there's something off about her. She was handpicked by Ceranna.

* CaptainObvious: While competing together in the orientation obstacle course, Rosa reminds Emily that it's a bad idea to stop in the middle. Given that the whole competition is a race and that the course itself is full of lethal dangers, it's safe to say Emily already knew that.
* {{CloudCuckoolander}}: Her reactions to things are weirdly mechanical, like she knows how she's expected to act but doesn't fully grasp why. For instance, when talking with the other rookies about how two people just got killed, Rosa says she feels bad -- and then immediately shifts to excitedly talking about the big DeadlyGame they're about to play and how she's excited to meet [=LaTasha=], whom she recognizes from television.
* CompetitionFreak: She loves competing, even in the Scholomance's lethal challenges, and she's honestly puzzled when others like [=LaTasha=] don't share her enthusiasm and prioritize their safety over testing themselves against her.
* DissonantSerenity: She acts sad about Julia and Minjin dying for a few seconds, then immediately gets excited about how they'll all get to run in a really challenging DeathCourse.
* FitnessNut: When all the Scholomance rookies are meeting (and mostly threatening) each other for the first time, Rosa takes the chance to do a set of push-ups.
* FriendlyEnemy: Rosa is quite polite to Emily while competing against her, even saying 'please' before asking her to get out of the way so Rosa can pass her in a race. However, this becomes creepy given Rosa's bizarrely nonchalant reactions to the horrors of the Scholomance; for instance, Rosa attempts to make Emily feel better by describing how another rookie got set on fire in the middle of the course and then telling Emily that she's better than that and thus should be happy.
* ImposedHandicapTraining: Emily sees Rosa training with weights strapped to her legs.
* LackOfEmpathy: Seems to understand that she's ''supposed'' to feel bad about Julia, Minjin, and her training partner Janet Ghebremariam dying, but her reactions indicate that she either wasn't really bothered by their deaths or is pretending to be a sociopath for some reason.

* IneptMage: The Tier 6 rookies are generally this, since they only got into the tier in the first place becasue they're so far behind their classmates.

* InsistentTerminology: She's technically Canadian but gets mad if anyone calls her that. She prefers people to think of her as 'Quebecois.'
* SingleIssueWonk: Caline's chief passion is for the cause of Quebec separatism, and she even says she joined the Scholomance to gain enough power that she could make it a reality.
* WearingAFlagOnYourHead: Caline wears a Quebec flag as a do-rag to underscore her hardline devotion to the cause of Quebec independence.

** She continues to try to cheat rather than just do her assignments properly, with the result being she's unprepared for the final orientation run. Though she does complete the course, she is ranked in Tier 6, where the students assessed to be the weakest are put.

An albino witch who arrives at the Scholomance dressed in very plain clothes. Her accent and outfit make Emily think she is Amish, which she later confirms. She seems terrified of the Scholomance and opposed to its violent methods, raising the question of why she's there.

* ActualPacifist: She is a devout Anabaptist who abhors all violence.
* AsTheGoodBookSays: Soon after arriving at the Scholomance, Emily overhears reciting Psalm 23 (the one mentioning the 'valley of the shadow of death.')
* DebtDetester: Yawkly clearly hates that she owes Emily a debt for saving her life and hasn't paid it back.
* DirtyCoward: Played with. She never stands up for herself and endures all kinds of humiliations without complaint, but she does stand up for others, even monsters like Julia Medina.
* DoNotCallMePaul: For reasons unknown, she really dislikes being called by her last name. Unfortunately, Lauren insists that everyone do it anyways and Yawkly isn't capable of fighting her, so she has to go along with it.
* ExtremeDoormat: She is terrified of the other students and quickly offers to placate them whenever it seems like she might be bothering them. She doesn't like having to go by her last name but goes along with it for fear of triggering Lauren's wrath. Emily has to reassure her that she wasn't annoyed by Yawkly quietly praying near her.
* HonorBeforeReason: Despite being in dire straits, Yawkly tries to give Emily the one powerful crafted item she's managed to obtain because she believes she owes Emily a huge debt for saving her life during orientation. Fortunately for her, Emily declines.
* {{Intangibility}}: She is able to turn herself into an intangible entity by using classic magic implements such as chalk and a bell.
* OneSteveLimit: Made into a plot point. Lauren compels Yawkly to go by her last name, even though Yawkly doesn't like doing that, in a supposed effort to make sure nobody mixes her up with the other Janet. Since the other Janet looks absolutely nothing like her, Emily thinks Lauren is just bullying Yawkly for some reason. Lauren then continues forcing Yawkly to go by her surname ''even after the other Janet is killed.''
* OrphansOrdeal: Yawkly claims not to have any family anymore, and it's implied that this is one of the reasons that she wound up stuck in the Scholomance.
* [[PleaseSpareHimMyLiege Please Spare Her My Liege]]: Like Alejandra, Yawkly begs the elites not to kill Julia. Her pleas have no more effect than the other girl's.
* TokenGoodTeammate: Even more than Megumi. Yawkly doesn't seem to want to commit violence at all.
* UnspecifiedApocalypse: When Janet mentions her community, she talks of them strictly in the past tense and gives the impression that simply returning to them is not an option. However, it hasn't yet been specified what precisely happened to them.
* WeaksauceWeakness: Unlike most of the other witches who have magic that's quick to use, Yawkly has to chalk a ritual circle around her and then ring a bell in order to cast her spells. This makes her much slower off the draw than the other witches.

A Scholomance rookie from Peru.

* CategoryTraitor: Her family were part of Peru's military junta and they sent her to the Scholomance to gain power so she can help overthrow the country's democratic government and reinstate a military dictatorship. But despite her family's longstanding allegiance to the military, Lima just wants to help people and has no interest in undermining democracy.
* {{Determinator}}:
** During the Julia-Morgan WizardDuel where the rookies are given rocks that let them feel whatever the combatants feel, most of the rookies drop the rocks after [[spoiler:Julia Medina]] starts taking excruciating blows. Lima, however, grimly hangs on even as the pain becomes immense.
** Lima also becomes very sick just before orientation, but she's able to push through and finish the course quickly enough to pass regardless.
* HeroOfAnotherStory: While Emily focuses on her own problems, Lima works to keep the other Tier 6 students alive, even shepherding Elea through the orientation course after Gelila killed the fourth person in their heat. Unfortunately, given the nature of the Scholomance, helping the Tier 6 students survive is easier said than done.

A Scholomance rookie from Turkey who is very skilled at brewing potions, and who frequently sells her excess to other students.

* BadassBandolier: Bahar wears twin bandoliers which are loaded with small flasks full of various potions. Given the prices her potions command in the school's black market, it's clear that she's got some very powerful magic loaded into the bandoliers' flasks.
* DungeonShop: She essentially operates one of these, brewing powerful potions and then selling them in exchange for passes and magical equipment.
* FriendInTheBlackMarket: The only legitimate source of supplies in the Scholomance is the school store, but most students aren't allowed in (or are restricted from getting the really good stuff) because their class rank is too low. Bahar runs a technically-illegal shop where she sells the potions that she brews to her desperate classmates. She's able to charge extortionate prices, but her customers has no other options, so they're forced to pay.
* HumanHardDrive: She can brew potions which drastically enhance her memory, allowing her to recall things she otherwise could never remember. Naturally, she uses these potions to do better on tests.
* LetsYouAndHimFight: In the final orientation run she just pays the three other witches in her heat to attack each other. This works well enough that two of those witches are killed, but Ceranna thinks this is a disreputable and denies her credit for the kills.
* MagicPotion: She carries entire bandoliers of these.
* NoHeroDiscount: Bahar refuses to give Emily a price break on her wares, even though she knows Emily has a record of opposing the especially evil students in their class.
* PurpleIsPowerful: She seems to already be a skilled witch even before starting her studies at the Scholomance, judging by the completed potions she carries around with her. She's also strongly associated with the color purple; both her eyes and her headscarf are that color.

An Ethiopian witch who brings a goat with her to the Scholomance.

* AffablyEvil: She politely tells Emily that she doesn't mind the girl and would rather not fight. Then she says that, should Emily stand in her way, she will nonetheless kill Emily without a second thought.
* BadassBookworm: Gelila is one of the more book-focused rookie witches and even takes books with her to the gym. She's also clearly one of the stronger students in the class; Emily notices that even though Gelila didn't seem to get any spare changes of clothing, her outfit is still immaculate, indicating that she's able to get through most of the orientation course's traps without taking damage. (By contrast, Emily herself frequently gets wrecked in the course, resulting in serious harm to her clothes as well as herself.)
* EmotionlessGirl: Though she's willing to get into conflicts with the other students, she rarely shows emotion and usually speaks in a flat and toneless voice.
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: She may have no respect for human life whatsoever, but she cares deeply for her goat familiar Akko.
* {{Familiar}}: She has a goat named Akko as a familiar.
* FamousAncestor: She claims to be descended from [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seble_Wongel Seble Wongel]], who was an Empress of Ethiopia.
* FightingForAHomeland: Gelila is Ethiopian, but she doesn't seem to think that the current nation of Ethiopia qualifies as her home. She wants to rebuild the complete Ethiopian Empire (which includes modern-day Eritrea) and rule it as a homeland just like her ancestor Seble Wongel did.
* GruesomeGoat: Gelila is an evil student whose goals include overthrowing multiple governments to rebuild an empire and who is explicitly willing to kill whoever she needs to in order to get that done. She's also never seen without her goat familiar.
* RightfulKingReturns: Gelila's goal is to rebuild the Ethiopian Empire and ascend its throne, taking back the seat which her ancestor Seble Wongel once held.
* TwoferTokenMinority: Based on her claims of being descended from Seble Wongel, Gelila is both black and Jewish. She also wears thick glasses, indicating she may have a vision disability.
* TheUnfettered: Gelila claims to believe in this, saying she will do absolutely anything to fulfill her goal of rebuilding the Ethiopian Empire. She goes so far as to tell Emily that she is confident Emily will determine Gelila's methods are unacceptable and try to stop her. She also says that, should Emily indeed pick a fight, she will kill Emily without a qualm.
* WeakButSkilled: Gelila reads a lot and has a vast quantity of theoretical knowledge, but perhaps as a result of spreading herself to thin, she's rather underpowered as a caster. This is shown the first time we see her in class when she produces a ward which is perfect on a theoretical level but is so underpowered that it can barely damage a small toy.

A Scholomance rookie with a guitar on her back and a falcon on her arm.

* {{Familiar}}: She has a huge falcon named Zugel for a familiar.
* MagicMusic: She carries a guitar with her and has indicated that she uses it to cast her spells.
* UnskilledButStrong: Maura seems to have a lot of power but not much knowledge as to how to use it. This is shown during the first class sequence, where Maura packs tons of energy into a ward but sets the spell up so poorly that it blows apart under its own strain.

A rookie with an interest in pagan and indigenous spirituality.

* AchievementsInIgnorance: Despite seeming like an idiot, she's one of only ten students (out of fifty) to complete the orientation course on her first try. She then compounds this by killing two competitors during her final run.
* BewareTheSillyOnes: Starlyght is a thoroughly ridiculous person who showcases her ignorance almost whenever she speaks and is held in disdain by others. But she's also ''extremely'' powerful, to the point where she kills two other students during her final orientation run. Her kills were so impressive and showed so much magical ability that she's given a class rank of 5 even though her orientation time itself wasn't that great (both because she's not athletic and also because she stopped in the middle of the deadly obstacle course to meditate).
* DissonantSerenity: She's quite cheery even after Julia and Minjin are killed.
* ForeignCultureFetish: She approaches Chosovi (who is Hopi) and goes on about how she's so excited to talk to a member of a 'spiritual' people. She also wears a dreamcatcher around her neck.
* GranolaGirl: She talks a lot about being enlightened and trying to learn from indigenous people.
* KnowNothingKnowItAll: She claims to be deeply interested in traditional spiritual practices and indigenous cultures, even to the point of claiming that Gaia is with her and will help her do well in orientation, yet she clearly knows very little. For instance, she wears a dreamcatcher around her neck, which isn't how those are used.
* LackOfEmpathy: Despite her ostensibly enlightened and empathetic views, she shows virtually no reaction to Julia's and Minjin's murders.
* LotusPosition: Starlyght meditates in this position. However, since we first see her do this while she's preparing for a lethal obstacle course in which she and the other contestants have been encouraged to kill each other, the effect is more unnerving than peaceful.
* MagicStaff: She acquires one after orientation and uses it to cast her spells.
* SummonMagic: Claudette, the only other survivor of Starlyght's heat in the final orientation run, babbles that Starlyght summoned some kind of monsters. It's heavily implied those monsters helped her kill the rest of the heat.

* HumanSacrifice: It's mentioned that Carlita knows a lot of magic involving this, though Carlita herself is killed before she gets to show her knowledge off.
* KilledOffscreen: Rebecca reports that she died trying to break into the Vault.

* AfroAsskicker: Janet is a tall and muscular girl with a huge afro, and even though she didn't get first place on the (challenging and potentially lethal) orientation course during her first run, she at least completed it, which eighty percent of the student witches couldn't do.
* EscapeFromTheCrazyPlace: Janet eventually tries to do this, but she fails and dies in the process.
* OneSteveLimit: Averted. The rookie class has another Janet, though that Janet is made to go by her last name to avoid confusion.
* YourHeadAsplode: [[spoiler:Her skull is blasted apart after she tries to use one of the Scholomance's trapped phones to call for help.]]

A Chinese Scholomance rookie.

* EvilCripple: Luban walks with a limp because one of her legs is a few inches longer than the other. She's also a monstrously cruel person who tries to kill Emily for seemingly no other reason than that Emily is competing against her.
* FlyingOnACloud: She knows magic to do this, and she spends most of her orientation run safely perched on the cloud while her competitors try to evade both her and the obstacles worked into the course floor.
* GoodScarsEvilScars: She has a pockmarked face, and she's evil to the core.
* LaughingMad: She spends most of the final orientation run cackling and laughing as she tries to kill Emily.
* ShockAndAwe: She can shoot bolts of lightning from her magic cloud, and she happily does so during orientation.
* SlowAndSteadyWinsTheRace: Her strategy during orientation is to get to the front of her pack and then slow down a bit so she can concentrate on killing everyone trying to catch up to her. If they all die, then she can take the course as slowly as she wants and still pass.

A Scholomance rookie who cracks under the pressure and tries to flee, but doesn't get far.

* EscapeFromTheCrazyPlace: She tries to do this after Morgan slays Julia, but she fails and dies in the process.

* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: After Julia is killed in a brutal and painful manner, Minjin panics and runs for the front door. Sica reports her death a few moments later.

* AbsurdlyPowerfulStudentCouncil: The elites decide which students are given which class rank, and that rank in turn determines everything from the quality of food and equipment the students get to which missions they're assigned. As such, even though the elites are just students, they still control almost every aspect of the other students' lives and can make their lives at the Scholomance easier... or much, much harder. (And shorter).
* AsskickingLeadsToLeadership: The elites supposedly got their ranks by being the four toughest fighters in the Scholomance.
* EvilMentor: They seem to act as this, both to the student body as a whole (since they have a lot of say in running the school and influence everyone's educations) and towards their handpicked students, whom most of them give special attention, in particular.
* MightMakesRight: Their justification for being on top and controlling the other students is just that they're the strongest, so they get to be in charge.

!!Lauren Taverron

One of the four Scholomance elites who attack Emily's team in the beginning of the book. Despite having the lowest rank of the four of them, she's the one who personally defeats Emily in combat. She claims to be impressed by Emily's fighting spirit and cleverness, and offers her the chance to join the Scholomance in order to get stronger and no longer be useless. Her true motives, however, remain a mystery.

* CombatPragmatist: Lauren seems to support people being this. When Emily asks why the Scholomance doesn’t even lock the front door (since anyone who tries to use it will just get instantly killed by the monster outside), Lauren cheerfully responds that she sees the front door as a convenient way for weaker students to get rid of stronger ones who are targeting them: if the weaker student can lure the stronger one outside somehow, the monster will eat the stronger one and the weaker one will be victorious!
* TheHedonist: Lauren insists on ordering what she claims are spectacular craft beers and appetizers when she speaks to Emily in the club, though since it’s Lauren, it’s likely that she was just setting up the waitress to be brainwashed (to prevent her from demanding their [=IDs=], since they’re both teenagers) to see how Emily would react.
* JediMindTrick: She knows a spell for these. For instance, after Emily meets her in Club Bacchus-Dionysus, Lauren orders craft beers and a waitress tries to card both girls. Lauren’s response is to flick her wand and cast a spell to brainwash the waitress into just getting the beers.
* MagicWand: Lauren has multiple of these. She uses them to devastating effect and seems able to do everything from brainwashing people to blasting Emily unconscious with a single shot.
* MaliciousMisnaming: She insists on calling Janet Yawkly by her last name (and makes everyone else do this too) even though Yawkly hates it. She has no non-specious justification for this (at first just claiming that she doesn't want to mix Yawkly up with the class's other Janet who looks nothing like her, then changing course when the other Janet dies and saying that the name 'Janet' should now be retired in memory of the dead girl and that Yawkly should therefore keep going by her last name), so it appears she's doing this just to be malicious.
* MundaneUtility: Lauren doesn’t just use her magic to curse her enemies. She also knows how to brainwash waiters into not carding her when she orders alcoholic beverages.
* TheNicknamer: Lauren keeps calling Emily ‘kid.’ Emily eventually protests, noting that she’s fifteen and is only a few years younger than Lauren, but Lauren says that Emily is so far behind in terms of developing her magical power that she thinks it’s apropos.
* SinkOrSwimMentor: In contrast to Rebecca, who helps Megumi by giving her magical items, Lauren refuses to aid Emily in that way and instead 'trains' her by putting her in dangerous situations so that she'll become stronger by fighting her way out of them.
* TricksterMentor: Lauren rarely tells Emily what she wants the other girl to learn, instead dropping hints and letting her figure things out for herself.
* UnscrupulousHero: Given her hostility towards the more outwardly-evil students like Morgan, Lauren gives off shades of this. While her ultimate motives aren't clear, she does at least seem to want to reduce the death rate of the Scholomance's students.
* VetinariJobSecurity: Lauren argues that she essentially has this, telling the other elites that they need her because she's the only one who picked two students that survived orientation and didn't fall to the back of the class. As such, she's the only one of them with any credibility, and they need her to vouch for them to the 'Board' so they aren't punished for their failings.

The top-ranked student at the Scholomance, and the leader of its elite team.

* CastingAShadow: Her magic spells seem to all revolve around using darkness and shadow to devastating effect.
* TheFaceless: Her face is always masked by shadow.
* GroomingTheEnemy: Morgan seems to be treating Alejandra this way, first murdering Alejandra's sister Julia and then forcing Alejandra through brutal training sessions with the promise of allowing Alejandra a chance at vengeance against her, Morgan, if Alejandra completes all the training and passes all the tests. Alejandra isn't yet strong enough to force the issue and has no choice but to agree, so Morgan is able to train her.

!!Ceranna Babineaux

The second-ranked student at the Scholomance, and a member of its elite team.

* BlackBossLady: Played with. Ceranna is a black girl and is also the Scholomance's second ranked student, but because Morgan is very hands off and seems to spend most of her time training Alejandra or out on missions, Ceranna winds up in charge of many of the Scholomance's day-to-day operations.
* {{Jerkass}}: She is noticeably more contemptuous of the rookies than the other elites. She's also cruel to her handpicked students Janet G. and Rosa, threatening them with horrible punishments whenever they don't surpass everyone else even though they're near the top of the class.
* MagicKnight: She specializes in melee combat, and even has an enchanted sword which is capable of sundering Emily’s shields.
* NumberTwo: She is the second ranked student, and thus is Morgan's number two.
* SecondPlaceIsForLosers: She clearly believes this, being furious that her handpicked students finished third and eighth respectively (out of fifty, with forty failing to finish at all) during the first run of the orientation course.

The third-ranked student at the Scholomance, and a member of its elite team.

* ImpliedDeathThreat: Rebecca informs Emily that, if Emily ever hurts Sica again, people will 'never find [Emily's] body.' In the same scene, she tells the clique that she's happy to fight them because Sica is hungry, implying Sica will kill and literally devour them if they try anything.
* NothingPersonal: Rebecca lets Emily know that she doesn't hold a grudge over Emily fighting her at the museum. They were on opposite sides at the time, so she knows not to take it personally.
* PaperTalisman: She uses these, even shattering a magical shield by slapping one onto it.
* [[VigilanteMan Vigilante Girl]]: She told Megumi that killing is fine, but only if it's of 'bad' people like the {{Yakuza}}.

* {{Familiar}}: She's one to Rebecca, and she proves quite willing to attack whoever she's sicced upon.
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: Her name is literally a command for a canine to attack someone.
* SavageWolf: She's definitely one. She tries to rip apart Amanda and Emily just on Rebecca's say-so.
* StealthPun: The wolf familiar’s [[NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast Name to Run Away From Really Fast]] ‘Sica’ isn’t just a word that sounds a lot like ‘sic,’ the traditional instruction for a canine to attack someone. A sica is also a type of ancient dagger which is known for being the tool of choice for Illyrian assassins.

The leader of Emily's original squad, and the latest descendant of a family whose members have studied at and served Knightcharm for generations.

* ElementalBaggage: She is able to summon and wield fire without needing to actually have a source of fire with her.
* NeverMyFault: It's noted that, for all she blames Emily for the mission failure (and for all Emily genuinely did terribly in the fight), neither Imogene nor the rest of her squad were able to defeat their warlogas either. Yes, they managed to keep standing and fighting until their enemies left (because Lauren had taken out Emily and stolen the magical artifacts which the warlogas had come to get), but that can hardly be called a success. Nonetheless, Imogene seems to hold Emily solely responsible for the disaster.
* PlayingWithFire: She fights mostly by summoning fire spells. They prove somewhat effective even against the magical darkness that Morgan wields.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: She gives one to Emily, telling her that even though Emily fantasized about being a great hero, Emily cleary didn't ''really'' want to fight evil or else she would have trained for combat harder and not done so badly during her first field mission.
* [[WellDoneSonGuy Well Done Daughter Girl]]: She is very upset over disappointing her family by having to report that her mission was a failure.

* TomboyWithAGirlyStreak: She is a brawler who uses magic to make herself stronger and more durable in fights and whose idea of a fun night out is going to watch [=MMA=] matches live. But she also likes to watch a trashy dance reality show.

Another witch on Emily's original team. She also seems to specialize in defensive magic, but instead of using a metal amulet like Emily does, she casts spells by wrapping strings of yarn into geometric sigils and channeling her magic through them.

* SenselessSacrifice: Amanda hates the terror of combat and personally wishes that she'd be taken off field duty and ordered to just make magical crafts and potions as Emily was. However, she refuses to ask Dean Westley to become the team crafter and stay behind on missions instead of Emily, saying that she doesn't want to see Emily get injured again and she's willing to risk getting hurt or even killed to make sure that doesn't happen. Emily sees this as senseless since she ''wants'' to get back out into the field and Amanda manifestly doesn't want to fight again, but Amanda refuses to back down.

* BigGood: She's the highest ranking official of Knightcharm, a school dedicated to protecting innocents from evil magicians, that we've met so far.

* DoWellButNotPerfect: [=LaTasha=] decides that she won't try to win her heat in the official orientation course race but will instead just try to finish it. Her rank will suffer for not coming in first, but she just wants to survive the course and would rather drop a few ranks if it means she doesn't have to slug it out with the frontrunners. (Emily notes that there are only thirty-two available slots in the class and forty-eight competitors, meaning that if enough students finish the slowest ones will be rejected anyways, but [=LaTasha=] checked on how previous classes did and is sure there won't be thirty-two survivors at all, so everyone who finishes automatically lives and makes it into the class.)

* FriendlyEnemy: Rosa is quite polite to Emily even while competing against her, even saying 'please' before asking her to get out of the way so Rosa can pass her in a race. However, this becomes creepy given Rosa's bizarrely nonchalant reactions to the horrors of the Scholomance; for instance, Rosa attempts to make Emily feel better by describing how another rookie got set on fire in the middle of the course and then telling Emily that she's better than that and thus should be happy.

* WearingAFlagOnYourHead: Caline wears a Quebec flag as a do-rag to underscore her hardline devotion to the cause of Quebec indepentence.

An albino witch who arrives at the Scholomance dressed in very plain clothes. Her accent and outfit make Emily think she is Amish. She seems terrified of the Scholomance and opposed to its violent methods, raising the question of why she's there.

* OrphansOrdeal: Yawkly claims not to have any family anymore, and it's implied that this is one of the reasons that she wound up stuck in the Scholomance where she's constantly in terror of being murdered.

* WeaksauceWeakness: Unlike most of the other witches who have magic that's quick to use, Yawkly has to chalk a ritual circle around her and then ring a bell in order to cast her spells. This makes her much slower off the draw than the other witches. (Her fear and hatred of magic also don't help.)

* CategoryTraitor: Her family were part of Peru's military junta and they sent her to the Scholomance to gain power so she can help overthrow the country's democratic government and reinstate a military dictatorship. But despite her family's longstanding allegiance to the military, Lima just wants to help people and has no interest in underminign democracy.

* FriendInTheBlackMarket: The only legitimate source of supplies in the Scholomance is the school store, but most students aren't allowed in (or are restricted from getting the really good stuff) because their class rank is too low. Bahar runs a technically-illegal shop where she sells the potions that she brews to her desperate classmates. She's able to charge extortionate prices, but here customers has no other options, so they're forced to pay.

* ButtMonkey: The little we know of her is that she got set on fire during a run through the orientation course and had to give up on that run.

* CoDragons: Lucille and Amira serve as this to Lily The two of them proved themselves to be the strongest witches in the clique short of Lily herself, having been the only other two to complete the orientation obstacle course on their first try, and when Lily had the chance to pick two people to help her kill Emily, she chose them over the rest of her clique.

* SlowAndSteadyWinsTheRace: Her strategy during orientation is to get to the front of her pack and then go relatively slowly while she concentrates on killing everyone trying to catch up to her. If they all die, then she can take the course as slowly as she wants and still pass.

* EscapeFromTheCrazyPlace: Janet eventually tries to do this, but she fails and dies in the process.
