But the most reliable accounts stated that eons ago, there existed a mighty empire known as Aelshea, who were believed to be the first species in the universe to evolve sentience. Having had a massive head start over just about everyone else, [[SufficientlyAdvancedAliens they might as well have been gods in the eyes of lesser sentients]]. It was believed that at some point in their history, even they began to experience a period of stagnation and a slow decline. And from there, as the legends went, was how the stage was set for my eventual ascension. A radical faction among Aelsheans believed that the only way to prevent the decline of their civilisation and eventual extinction of their race was to push their mastery of science and magic to an even greater height than previously thought possible. They sought to [[AGodAmI elevate themselves to godhood]] - even by the standards of their race. The Drekis Empire is, for all intents and purposes but an empire InNameOnly, as it lacks any sort of formal governing structure, geopolitical borders or diplomatic relationships, other than the fact that its innumerable legions possess UndyingLoyalty to their ruler, Drekis, and that every inhabited world that encountered them is considered fair game for conquest and assimilation into his empire. [[TheGhost Not much is known about its ruler]], who is often considered a stuff of legends. But the threat of his minions is very real, and after their previous defeat in the War of Oblivion's Fall, they have returned to set their sights on a new prize; The Nexus of All Realities, Khazan itself.
