* NoodleIncident: At one point, the smurfs meet a character cursed into a BalefulPolymorph and compelled to speak in complete gibberish. Papa Smurf not only recognizes the affliction, but more or less understands what the cursed character is saying, calling it "the language of the cursed." When asked by his fellow smurfs how he can understand this "language," he refuses to elaborate.

* MagicFeather: In "The Olympic Smurfs" Papa Smurf gives him a reddish doping jelly to put on his nose, in order to help him compete in the Olympic Games. When he eventually wins, he is about to confess his cheating, but it turns out that the substance was only raspberry jelly, and that Weakling Smurf owes his victory only to his newly-acquired self-confidence.
** The same MagicFeather element also appears in the cartoon episode "A Little Smurf Confidence", which also features Weakling.

* AdaptedOut: Many Smurfs don't appear by name in the CGI film adaptations, but the absent Sassette gets a very conspicuous CaptainErsatz named Vexy. Though it's more likely the case of the movies being an AlternateContinuity.

* EvenEvilHasStandards: Balthazar isn't afraid to cross some moral boundaries with what he wants to do with the Smurfs that would give his godson Gargamel some pause in crossing.

* {{Adorkable}}: In the Sony Live-Actions films, Clumsy acts very sweet and friendly with others. He's even given floppier ears which look different compared to the other smurfs.

* NoGoodDeedGoesUnpunished: On those rare occasions when he isn't being a KnowNothingKnowItAll, and actually tries to help his fellow smurfs without CondescendingCompassion of any kind, his treatment is ''actually worse'' than when he's being an InsuferableGenius. The most notable example is when he chances upon a clearly distraught Smurfette, and offers his hand to help her out, until she touches him and turns him into a statue, made entirely of Smurfberry candy. Fortunately, Papa Smurf is able to cure him, and he has no memory of the event.

** He ends up getting Smurfette's favor from time on time, much for the other Smurfs's puzzlement.

* TeamDad: Papa Smurf himself says that the Smurfs his family and often calls them "my little Smurfs".

* DemotedToExtra: He was an importan character in his first appearance, ''La Pierre de Lune'', but in his latter appearances he became just a background character in Homnibus' cottage.

* {{Ephebophile}}: Papa Smurf's one-time attraction to Smurfette in "Romeo And Smurfette". Thankfully averted (so far) in the live-action movie series, where his relationship to Smurfette is genuinely father to daughter.

* AmbiguousGender: In the comics, at least. The cartoon on several occasions distinctly refers to the cat as male -- [[ViewerGenderConfusion not that this has stopped fans from speculating.]] Averted in the Mexican Spanish dub, as Azrael is always addressed as male.

* AFatherToHisMen: Or more accurately, A Papa To His Smurfs. In the English vocal track of the live-action movie, Gargamel goes so far as to have Papa Smurf say he has 99 sons and one daughter. Papa Smurf himself says that they're his family.

* ItsPersonal: Gargamel originally wanted to capture Smurfs because of their singing and cheery attitude, (in the cartoon at least) which annoys him. Stealing Balthazar's book taught him that they could be used as a philosopher's stone for transmuting metals (or Smurfs themselves) into gold, or grant immortality by eating them. Numerous failures, and humiliations have made ''{{Revenge}}'' his primary motivation, however. Filling his stomach or getting rich by hunting Smurfs is often an afterthought.

* PreAsskickingOneLiner: In the second Christmas Special of the animated show, he delivers an epic one right before delivering a magical NoHoldsBarredBeatdown on Balthazar.

** The Animated series offers a notable subversion in the second Christmas special. While Gargamel doesn't actually come out and thank the Smurfs, he does come damn close. After Balthazar mortally wounds Azrael, The Smurfs, instead of fleeing for their lives, actually tend to the cat's wounds, and save his life, while Gargamel is giving Balthazar a well-deserved, magical NoHoldsBarredBeatdown for doing so, ''and treating it as something unimportant.'' Once Balthazar has fled in terror, it would seem that, once again, Gargamel would go after The Smurfs. To the surprise of '''everyone''', Gargamel actually calls off Azrael, picks up the very confused cat, makes up an excuse, and walks away.
** The Animated series also toys with an inversion. After Gargamel actually saves The Smurfs from certain extinction, by rescuing the Long Life Stone from falling into a volcano, he bemoans The Smurfs for being Ungrateful Bastards because he's stuck hanging by his threadbare robe over a lava pit, forgetting the fact that The Smurfs have neither the power nor the means to rescue him, and their long history of SaveTheVillain on his behalf.

* VillainousValor: He actually risks his own life to come to the Smurf's rescue ''once''. He immediately regrets it afterwards. It's not entirely clear if even he knows why he did it. There are several good theories. The most prominent of them are that either 1.) He was doing so as part of an EnemyMine alliance against Nemesis. 2.) He was planning to steal the Smurf's treasure afterwards. 3.) A momentary pang of either pity or TheOnlyOneAllowedToDefeatYou towards the Smurfs, or some combination of the above.

* WouldHurtAChild: Even Baby Smurf is not immune to Gargamel's evil plans when it suits him.

* StarCrossedLovers: With an unnamed lynx. Azrael falls in love with a lynx that escapes from an exotic animal caravan, thanks to the Smurfs (which she then tries to eat because they are mouse-sized and she's still a cat), and she falls in love with him, much to Gargamel's dismay, understandable as he's worried [[PerpetualPoverty about having another mouth to feed]],[[IllGirl especially a sick one,]] but Azrael has to say goodbye to her as the two of them can't be together because the Smurf Forest is actually making her sick, and he can't go live in her native territory because he's a house cat, and he would die.

* NotSoHarmlessVillain: During Laconia's wedding, Gargamel use his Ghoulliope to magically ensnare all the Smurfs, but also all the wedding guests. For a very brief moment, Gargamel prove he was the scariest villain of the show. [[NearVillainVictory That is until Laconia, who was immune to the machine's effects, destroyed it with the help of the Smurfette.]]

* RedHeadedHero: In the movies, his sideburns are reddish-brown, while in ''The Legend Of Smurfy Hollow'' they are a bit more on the ginger side.
