However, in season 2, when his friends are discussing if Sasà is actually guilty of rape or just wrongly accused, Pino points out [[spoiler: that if such a rich, privileged young boy like Sasà ends up in prison, there's a good chance that he really did something bad. He was right, as proven a few episodes later.]]

* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: ''Evil'' is a stretch as he never was malevolent to begin with, but he's an AntiVillain in the first season and yet he loves his mom (deep down) and his dog.

* BelligerentSexualTension: With Rosa in season 3. She wants to kill him, but they are obviously attracted to each other.

* DisappearedDad: His dad Gabriele has ever been around in the Di Salvo family as he was arrested before the start of the story.

* FourTemperamentEnsemble: Of the main male friends quartet, he's the Melancholic. He's rather brooding, troubled and sad because of his origins and the crime he felt forced to commit to defend his girlfriend, but he's a kind, caring and good-hearted guy who wants to live a peaceful life with the ones he loves.

* RevengeBeforeReason: In season 2, [[spoiler: he's determined to kill whoever killed his girlfriend Nina, and spends a long part of the season trying to understand who is the killer and plot his revenge. He changes his mind eventually, because IfYouKillHimYouWillBeJustLikeHim.]]

* SecondLove: To Rosa.

* ToughLove: To Filippo.

* AntiVillain: He's pretty much portrayed as a VillainInNameOnly: the reason for his antagonistic role is his friendship with Ciro and his gang. Otherwise, he's a fairly mellow guy and isn't a bad person, just going along with what his friends are doing.

* {{Jerkass}}: A rude and obnoxious boy who always provokes other people. Not to mention that he's homophobic at first.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: He has an incredible temper, is rude, cocky, unpleasant and constantly causes mischief, but he ''does'' have redeeming qualities and genuinely cares for his friends. He's also egalitarian and stops being homophobic.

* LaughablyEvil: While he's overly mischievous and unpleasant instead of ''evil'', due to his age, nobody takes him seriously, despite his troublemaking behavior and homophobia.
* PoliticallyIncorrectVillain: A younger examples than most, but he's introduced as a rather negative character and extremely homophobic. {{Subverted}} later on.

* NiceGuy: Despite being a member of a delinquent group, he's a pretty friendly, affable and nice person, and a loyal friend as well.

* BrattyTeenageDaughter: She snarks and behaves badly at her mother according to her backstory.

* JerkassToOne: While he's generally a pretty mellow and affable guy, he's more jerkish to Pino, provoking him given that they are in love with the same girl.

* DefrostingIceQueen: Like Paola, she starts off as a hardass who hates the young inmates. After her FreudianExcuse is revealed, she softens up and becomes a more caring authority figure.

* JerkassHasAPoint: She makes several good points about the prison being badly managed in season 3, especially after Viola's suicide. Massimo and Paola were too idealistic in believing that all the young inmates can grow into better people: Viola was very obviously a dangerous psychopath who should have been tranferred to a mental institution immediately, instead of keeping her in the juvenile prison.

* {{Tsundere}}: Both in a romantic and non-romantic way. She really ''does'' care for others, she's just bad at showing it due to her heavy repression of feelings and empathy.

* EvenEvilHasStandards: He has no problem with torture, murder, and extreme violence, but he would never ''physically'' hurt women (though his actions are often emotionally hurtful to women) or children.
* EvilCounterpart: Though ''evil'' is a stretch, he is this to Carmine. Both are young guys who had children early, and they are handsome, intelligent and TroubledButCute (albeit for different reasons). But, while Carmine is a kind, loyal NiceGuy who comes from a criminal family yet wants to live an honest and peaceful life, and has a troubled relationship with his mother, Edoardo is quite the arrogant {{jerkass}} who's unfaithful to his girlfriend, has a good relationship with his mother despite being a delinquent, and frequently gets into trouble.

* {{Jerkass}}: Most of the time, he's insensitive, cocky, and violent. He repeatedly cheats on his wife Carmela with Teresa, and he's quite neglectful to his baby son too.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Edoardo is a brash, insensitive, cocky, self-absobed and violent thug who repeatedly cheats on his wife Carmela with Teresa, and he's quite neglectful to his baby son too. Though, he does have several redeeming qualities, and has a caring and noble side. He also has friends he cares for and is especially close with Totò.

* SmugSmiler: He often has a smug grin on his face, even in the last scene of season 4.

* UsedToBeASweetKid: While he was a little rough, he was a fairly good-natured kid who genuinely tried to befriend a kid in a childhood flashback - sadly, the latter turned out to be an arrogant jerk.
* VillainProtagonist: He's the most important male character along with Carmine of the series as a whole, especially starting in season 3. He gets many of the most important storylines and SympatheticPOV, but he's an amoral criminal who cheats on his wife.

* AllGirlsWantBadBoys: After a few episodes of Edoardo hitting on her, she also falls in love with him, even though Edoardo is a cocky delinquent - though, he isn't exactly evil. {{Downplayed}} as she doesn't even consider him a bad boy, at least not at first.

* BitchInSheepsClothing: [[DownplayedTrope A mild example]] after she TookALevelInJerkass. She is polite, well-mannered, and all in all her kindness ''is'' genuine, but she also becomes more questionable and selfish in season 4, where she sleeps with Edoardo on his hospital bed and still wants Edoardo for herself, all while knowing that Edoardo already has a depressed wife and a child. That said, it's also a moment of LoveMakesYouDumb and genuinely thinking that Edoardo has chosen ''her'', but if Teresa ''really'' wanted a serious relationship with Edoardo, she could have told him to be honest to his wife and break up, but Teresa simply acts like Carmela doesn't exist.

* HorribleJudgeOfCharacter: She genuinely thought Edoardo was a good guy and a faithful boyfriend. After she learns the truth, she's devastated.
* TheIngenue: Naive enough to fall in love with Edoardo... until she finds out that Edoardo lied to her since the beginning, and he already has a long-time girlfriend and a baby. She's also shocked when she discovers Edoardo's violent side. Later on, she stops being naive and instead becomes more selfish and possessive, determined to have Edoardo all for herself.

* LoveMakesYouEvil: Not ''evil'', but falling in love with Edoardo [[TookALevelInJerkass makes her more unfettered, nasty and selfish.]] In the long run, she has no qualms stealing Edoardo from Carmela, as she feels like being Edoardo's choice through and through.

* NiceGirl: She's very polite, doesn't mind Edoardo's abrasive personality, and is hands down one of the kindest and most selfless characters in the series who volunteers to help the imprisoned. Sadly, she TookALevelInJerkass in season 4, where she's no longer naive but continues her affair with Edoardo, even though she knows Edoardo's wife is on the verge of a mental breakdown.

* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: He clearly didn't want to kill his friend Francesco, and felt horrible for it. He only did it beacuse his father wanted to. He also seems to be close to his family.

** He's genuinely attracted to ''Viola'', and thinks it can be mutual. While they have a lot in common, Viola is a sociopath who has no feelings for anyone and only wants to manipulate Ciro.

* AntiVillain: Again, tecnhically he's a delinquent involved in the Camorra, but he isn't a bad person by nature and is rather meek and quiet.

* EvenEvilHasStandards: At least, he has a much greater sense of loyalty than Edoardo. While he's not outright ''evil'', he's still a criminal who wants to take over Edoardo's position (because he knows that Edoardo is not reliable), but at first he was willing to give his loyalty to Rosa. Only after Rosa tells him that she's no longer interested in her father's "family business" and dirty money, he starts to make a plan to take the money by himself and become the new leader. By contrast, [[ChronicBackstabbingDisorder Edoardo]] was willing to screw over Rosa and just keep lying to her.

* {{Gayngst}}: He's in the closet, and unhappy because his secret boyfriend was killed by his homophobic father. Luigi himself has a homophobic brother, and is too scared to come out. {{Subverted}} in S4 as he admits to the other inmates he's gay.

* StraightGay: Nobody suspects that he's gay. His little brother has even made a joke about Luigi potentially being a "ladies man".

* AnnoyingYoungerSibling: He acts like a hyperactive brat and constantly irritates his older brother Luigi. They are still close though, [[spoiler: until the end of season 3.]]

* JerkToNiceGuyPlot: Very much so. Starts off as a violent and unstable bully who doesn't get along with anyone, and becomes a nice, caring, loyal and goofy good guy in S4.

* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: ''Evil'' is a stretch, but he's an AntiVillain in the first season and yet he loves his mom (deep down) and his dog.

** Gianni is one of the nicest guys in the series, but has no problem getting into a fight with Fabio, a much older and bigger guy than him who's also very violent. [[spoiler: He also accidentally pushes Fabio off the balcony while defending himself]].

* TokenGoodTeammate: In the first few episodes, he's seen casually hanging out with Ciro's gang, but he never joins in their violence and never laughs at Filippo's humiliations along with them. He's actually one of the few people who is genuinely friendly to Filippo since the beginning. When we learn more about him, it becomes clear that he has nothing to do with Ciro and his friends.

* PoliticallyIncorrectVillain: He makes some homophobic remarks about Luigi in season 4. Ironically, he makes them when talking with Milos, unaware of the fact the Milos is gay too. He also seems to be racist, it's given by the fact that he said the n word and making rude gestures at Kubra (a black girl) when she arrived in prison.

* AntiVillain: Even more of a VillainInNameOnly than Milos. Diego is a good-natured guy who becomes a delinquent due to his friendship with the Di Meo brothers, the ones who save the poor guy from pretty much being a slave.

* EvenTheGirlsWantHer: Even according to Silvia, Kubra is "smoking hot".

* AmbiguouslyEvil: Clearly ''not'' a positive character, but rather than outright ''evil'' she just seems to be very twisted and with a distorted view.

* KarmaHoudini: In season 3, she has suffered no consequences for stealing Gianni's song.

* DisappearedDad: His dad isn't mentioned nor he has ever been around in the Di Salvo family.

* InSeriesNickname: He is called "Chiattillo" (meaning "preppy rich boy") more often than not. While the nickname was initially given to him by the antagonists, it's often used even by his friend Carmine and by the adults.

* NiceGuy: He has a bit of a temper in season 1, due to the frustrating prison life that was new to him and being surrounded by violent criminals who beat him up. But after his friendship with Carmine grows stronger, he accepts the situation, and he's constantly nice in season 2 and 3.

* PoliticallyIncorrectHero: He says "filthy gypsy" after the Romani girl Naditza steals his wallet and his watch, and it's the reason why she dislikes him initially. [[spoiler: They end up falling in love, though.]]

* DefrostingIceKing: In season two, he warms up to Filippo after saving his live and showing interest in Kubra makes him a better person.

* FourTemperamentEnsemble: Of the main male friends quartet, he's the Choleric, being usually angry, violent, unstable, aggressive, AxCrazy and yet extremely loyal.

* HeroesLoveDogs: Though he is more of an AntiHero given his violent temper, but there's no doubt he loves dogs.

* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: By the time in season two, he may be violent, rough and nasty around the edges. But he cares about his mom, his friends and Kubra. He finally drops the "jerk" part in season 4, showing his CharacterDevelopment.

* NiceGuy: After he overcomes his violent temper and AxCrazy attitude, Pino is ultimately shown to be a kind and loyal friend, and with a playful and goofy side.
* NobleDemon: At first he's this. He's violent and unstable, and has an antagonistic role at first, but he does have his values and is pretty much the personification of UndyingLoyalty.

* PoliticallyIncorrectHero: Zig-zagged. He's madly in love with Kubra, a black girl. But in season 3, when a black guy also becomes attracted to Kubra, Pino gets so crazily jealous that he calls him the N-word, leaving Kubra disappointed. Pino is a mentally unstable LowerClassLout, so he just used the most offensive insult he could come up with, mainly because of jealousy.

* FourTemperamentEnsemble: The Sanguine of the main male friends quartet. He's kind, friendly, cheerful, creative and optimistic, spreading positivity around despite everything that happened to him.

* UsedToBeASweetKid: ''Sweet'' is a bit of a stretch, as he was a little cocky even as a child, but he genuinely tried to befriend a kid in a childhood flashback - sadly, the latter turned out to be an arrogant jerk.

* {{Gayngst}}: He's in the closet, and unhappy because his secret boyfriend was killed by his homophobic father. Luigi himself has a homophobic brother, and is too scared to come out.

* EmotionlessGirl: She's apathetic and never shows any emotion aside from hatred and sadism.

* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: She eventually softens up and becomes less angry, especially after she starts dating Pino. Pino himself, the first time he has a conversation with her, says she has a good heart deep down despite her attitude.

* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: The Tomboy to her friend Carmela's Girly Girl. Rosa is a tough LittleMissBadass who wears black, has many tattoos, and isn't afraid of fighting and killing. Carmela is more conventionally feminine and is happy with her role as Edoardo's wife.

* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: Very negative example. Her ideas are definitely insane, such as her willingness to set a guy on fire and her actually setting a recording studio on fire. As she did the latter, after Gianni confronts her, she still thinks she did the right thing.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: Not outright ''evil'', but while she's clearly an arrogant jerk and not the most morally upstanding character in the series, at least she has some standards.

* TeamMom: She evolves into a mother figure due to her genuinely love for the young inmates.

* TookALevelInJerkass: In season 4, for understandable reasons since his wife was raped by the henchmen of [[TheQueenPin Carmine's mother]], and he undergoes a pretty hard family crisis with his wife and his son. He becomes cold and angry to all the inmates, including Carmine, although he gets better by the end of the season.

* AmbitionIsEvil: She stole Gianni and Filippo's song after Valentine convinced her to, she wanted to be on herself on the radio.

* {{Jerkass}}: She's not outright evil and malevolent like Viola, but she's generally unpleasant and violent, not to mention she's also ''very'' arrogant.

* {{Tomboy}}: One of the most tomboyish girls in the cast, because of her outfits, confrontational attitude, liking rap music, and her backstory showing her to be OneOfTheBoys with a young gang of thugs (she was even the leader).

Ukrainian refugee who is in prison for killing a man (it's later revelaed to be self-defense).

* BewareTheQuietOnes: She's mute initially, but becomes extremely aggressive to anyone who tries to talk to her, except Gianni eventually.

* DefrostingIceQueen: A very angry girl who never talks to anyone, but she gets much better at the end of season 4, thanks to her friendship with Gianni.

* SugarAndIcePersonality: She was angry and cynical at the beginning, but at the end of season 4, she warms up to Gianni and is not a bad person by any means.

* NoSympathy: ZigZagged - as she learns the truth, Teresa ''does'' show some sympathy towards Carmela at first, but in the long run she fundamentally doesn't gives a damn about the girl's feelings, as she genuinely believes Edoardo has chosen ''her'', and keeps spending time with him.

* AmoralAttorney: He's a dishonest lawyer who is involved in the illegal trade of criminals. He's also the only one who knows where are Don Salvatore's money.

* DeadpanSnarker: His snarky and cynical remarks when he interacts with the inmates already show that he's the least nice of the prison staff.

* ContrastingReplacementCharacter: She's a cold woman and the opposite of TeamMom Paola, whom she replaces. Athough, like Paola before her, she turns into a DefrostingIceQueen in the next season.

* BigBad: The main villain in season 1, and the main threat to both Carmine and Filippo. [[spoiler: He actively tried to kill them in the season 1 finale.]]

* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: By the time in season two, he may be violent, rough and nasty around the edges. But he cares about his mom, his friends and Kubra. He drops the "jerk" part in season 4 almost entirely, showing his CharacterDevelopment.

* NobleDemon: He's violent and unstable, and has an antagonistic role at first, but he does have his values and is pretty much the personification of UndyingLoyalty.
* PluckyComicRelief: Especially after he TookALevelInKindness (in season 1, he has his moments, but his "craziness" is mostly about him being a violent jerk and a MoodSwinger). In season 3 and 4, he's the goofiest character on the show.

* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Edoardo is a brash and cocky thug, and also a womanizer and has no qualms cheating on his wife. Though, he does have several redeeming qualities, and has a caring and noble side. He also has friends he cares for and is especially close with Totò.

* ClingyJealousGirl: Initially she forgives Edoardo after finding out he cheated on her with Teresa. But when she actually meets Teresa, she starts screaming against her. [[spoiler:In season 4, she gets livid at Edoardo for Edoardo impregnating Teresa.]]

* SecretlySelfish: Easily a consequence of LoveMakesYouDumb - she has been portrayed as an overall selfless character, but after falling in love with Edoardo, aside from the fact she TookALevelInJerkass, she clearly reveals a more unfettered and self-centered side, wanting him all for herself and, needless to say, proud to save him being his blood donor.

* AxCrazy: In the flashbacks of her backstory, she wanted to ''set a guy on fire''. Even the members of her gang [[EvenEvilHasStandards abandoned her]], letting the guy run away.

* AwesomenessByAnalysis: She's very intuitive and perceptive, and can play the piano just using her intuition and perfect pitch. And from the first time she meets [[HateSink Viola]], she hates her from the start, and is right.

* StepfordSmiler: Acts like a friendly and fun-loving girl around the other girls in prison (except her ArchEnemy Viola), but she's just trying to run away from her horrible family.

* TheDreaded: According to the other inmates, she's even more creepy and scary than Viola. But unlike Viola, Alina just wants to be left alone, and leaves people alone if they don't bother her or Gianni.

* CharacterDevelopment: In season 2, he becomes a JerkWithAHeartOfGold thanks to his role in the Sasà story. In season 3, he's no longer corrupt, or so it seems.
* DeadpanSnarker: His snarky remarks when he interacts with the inmates already show that he's the least nice of the prison staff.

* MyGreatestFailure: As a kid

* MissingMom: It's implied that her mother was deceased.

* TheSociopath: Unscrupolous, selfish, possessive, manipulative, violent, narcissistic, asocial and psychotic. That's what he ''is''.
