* KickTheSonOfABitch: [[spoiler:She's killed by her son, the only person she claims to genuinely love. After everything she did [[AbusiveParents to him]], she fully deserved it.]]

* ArcherArchetype: She's a talented archer, but also fiercely independent and tends to challenge Jonas's authority more often than not.

* TheWomanWearingTheQueenlyMask: Queen-to-be, but still. She's polite, poised, respectful, and all in all the perfect heir to the throne, but when she was younger she had her sister's defiant streak. Emilia just tampered it down to better be the ideal queen.

* TheWomanWearingTheQueenlyMask: Her coldness is all in the name of being what she believes to be a good queen and mother.

* ManipulativeBastard: [[spoiler:Lucia thought he was completely genuine about only wanting to free his siblings. Little did she know, he was yet another person using her, this time by playing off her sympathy for [[SealedEvilInACan his situation]].]]

* IllGirl: She has a nasty cough at the start of the series that only grows worse. Throughout her appearances in the first book, her health steadily declines, until she's confined completely to bedrest and, finally, passes away.

* RapunzelHair: Her golden locks tumble all the way to her waist.

* AttemptedRape: Tries to do this to a peasant girl in ''Rising Storm'' before Magnus stops him.

* LoveRedeems: [[spoiler:What finally pushes him to start becoming a better person is having his feelings for Cleo reciprocated, since he can’t stand the person he is and feels she deserves someone better. [[RealityEnsues Change isn’t as easy as that, of course]], but he does go through with it.]]

* StepfordSmiler: Type A; thanks to Gaius's DeadlyDecadentCourt, Cleo quickly has to learn to keep her emotions under lock and key. She excels at it, perfecting a mask of polite sweetness while all her anger, hate, and despair boils underneath.

* GuileHero: Shows himself as one in ''Gathering Darkness' where he improvises a plan to rescue Lysandra involving stolen guard uniforms and fireworks. He had traces of it earlier as well, but tended to let his emotions get in the way.

* HardDrinkingPartyGirl: Her shame over a one-night stand with Aron put an end to the ‘drinking’ part, but Cleo initially has no interest in politics or ruling a kingdom, only having fun with her friends. After the first book, she starts indulging in wine again, but is much more moderate about this behavior than before.

* SmittenTeenaageGirl: Acts like this around Alexius, swooning over his looks and how he makes her feel...without really knowing much about him.

* TheAtoner: [[spoiler:After realizing [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone she almost helped bring about the end of the world]], Amara withdraws from Mytica and begins the steps of becoming a better person.]]

* EvenEvilHasStandards: [[spoiler:She’s absolutely horrified when her grandmother kidnaps baby Lyssa and suggests raising her as a ChildSoldier.]]

* ReformedButRejected: [[spoiler:No one, save Nerissa, cares that Amara wants to turn her life around at the end of the series, though for good reason. She goes through with it anyway, but has to give up her throne.]]

* ChickMagnet: He wins the attention of Cleo, Lysandra, [[AbhorrentAdmirer Laelia]], and Phaedra. Not bad. [[spoiler:As well as getting some ShipTease with Lucia, by the end.]]

* HeroicSelfDeprecation: His self-esteem is pretty much shot to pieces only halfway through the series. [[spoiler:His rebellion fails to achieve much except the loss of life, all his loved ones get hurt or die because of their association with him, and he’s quickly realizing just how outmatched a normal former peasant like him is in a world of politics, magic, and the supernatural.]]

* ThenLetMeBeEvil: [[spoiler:No small part of her slide into evil was fueled by how so many ''feared'' she would become evil.]]
* TookALevelInJerkass: She was originally the typical NiceGirl. Then her magic awoke, and she became steadily seduced by power, [[LackOfEmpathy losing her compassion for ordinary people]] and [[spoiler:[[RoaringRampageOfRevenge going on a revenge journey]].]]

* ChickMagnet: He wins the attention of Cleo, Lysandra, [[AbhorrentAdmirer Laelia]], and Phaedra. Not bad. [[spoiler:As well as getting some ShipTease with Lucia, too, by the end.]]

* {{Determinator}}: "Nothing is impossible."

* HollywoodAtheist: Of the four main characters, Jonas is the one who most disbelieves in magic, the Watchers, and gods; Lucia starts out religious, Magnus acknowledges their existence but doesn’t particularly care, and Cleo comes around to believe in them by the end of the first book. As far as Jonas is concerned, nothing exists until he’s seen it with his own eyes. It takes being healed by magic and actually meeting Watchers to bring him around.

* TheCharmer: He's a flirt and a sweet-talker.

* ArcherArchetype: Averted. She's an archer, yet also fiery and temperamental.

* PetTheDog: Numerous times to Lucia [[spoiler:and Cleo]], but one notable moment of kindness is aimed at not either of them, but at a serving girl, Amia. When his father catches her spying for Magnus, Magnus tries to indicate to her that she should sell him out to save herself; when she refuses, he speaks up for her life, and then later gives her a bag of money and sends her away to be safe. [[spoiler:[[KickTheDog His father tracks her down and kills her anyway,]] but hey, he tried.]]

* {{Tsundere}}: [[spoiler:His narration mentions aspects of Cleo he finds attractive or respectable, but his words say the exact opposite. [[LampshadeHanging Lampshaded]] by Cleo:]]

One of the four main characters, Lucia is the (unknown to her or Magnus) adopted daughter of the Damoras. Her birth was foretold as the {{Reincarnation}} of Eva, marking her as a sorceress of great power and destiny. She was stolen out of her cradle as a baby to raised as a weapon for King Gaius, and only now have her powers begun to awaken.

* {{Hypocrite}}: Is the one who endorsed the witch hunts, yet not only is his daughter a sorceress, [[spoiler:his mother's a witch.]]

* YourCheatingHeart: Asks Cleo for a kiss after already entertaining a relationship with Lysandra.

* AGodAmI: Desires the Kindred to become a god of the all the world.

* BiTheWay: Despite her dislike of men, Amara’s still attracted to them, but she also finds Nerissa attractive.

* ArrangedMarriage: Gaius arranges for him to marry Cleo after he finished conquering Auranos, as a way to smooth relations with the populace over. Neither he nor Cleo is happy about it. [[spoiler:But it all [[PerfectlyArrangedMarriage works out]] in the end.]]

* DaddysGirl: Unlike Magnus, who has rather mixed feelings on their father due to the constant stem of abuse, Lucia adores King Gaius. If she has to choose between going to him or Althea for advice, she'll pick her every time, and trusts him whole-heartedly.

* ObliviousToLove: She has no idea Nic is in love with her; even when Emilia directly tells her so, Cleo just says he isn't, because [[CrowningMomentOfFunny she would notice something like that]].
