The "Demon Lord," a man from another world who is wreaking havoc on the world and needs to be stopped. Later, it's revealed that [[spoiler:his homeworld was dying, and he came to Aselia to prevent the people from destroying their Mana Tree, and get a seed from it so that he can save his homeworld]]. He has the ability to travel through time.

* TheDreaded: Deconstructed. The prequel novel reveals that he was branded the "Demon King" as an act of negative propaganda by Reisen, who viewed him as a threat due to his alien nature and attempts to stop magitech development. In a moment of ThenLetMeBeEvil, Dhaos decided to play into it once he realized this would prevent him from accomplishing his goals peacefully and recruits a horde of demons to wage war on Midgard.

* FallenHero: [[spoiler:To quote the ''Tales'' wiki; he was ''relieved'' when he didn't have to use force to stop a war and began to organise relief efforts for the citizens who were caught in the crossfire. When Dios fired a mana weapon, thus wiping it from the planet, his immediate reaction was to see if anything could be done to save the World Tree. * ProperLady: In the English version she gets a "Perfect Lady" title.

* CoolOldGuy: Okay, so he's not ''that'' old, but by RPG standards, 29 is pretty ancient. Arche lampshades this at one point. (Then again though; a lot of this is partly because he's drawn in a way that makes him look [[YoungerThanTheyLook older than he really is]], as well as the white hair.) This wasn't helped at all by his sprite in the SNES version looking ''nothing'' like his character art - he looked pointedly overweight, had ''grey'' hair in a ponytail and wore a scholar's robe and beret, and even ''animated'' like you'd expect a middle-aged man to. SNES Klarth looked more like he was in his 40s or 50s, rather than 29. The PSX version made sure to "correct" this and was far closer to the original art.

* BlackMagicianGirl: In direct contrast to Min, Arche only has offensive spells in her arsenal.

* BreakingTheFourthWall: At one point in the game, she suggests to use "quick-jump" in order to cut the time of walking long distances back to her from from Alvanista. Played with when she sees Chester first time, saying that he looks "kinda wussy", referring to his significantly lower level compared to her and other companions.

* IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy: She has a crush on Cress, but knows he likes Mint, so she backs down. [[CleaningUpRomanticLooseEnds And then waits to meet the famous Chester.]]

* AttackAttackAttack: In the SNES version, since he had no skills then.
* BadassNormal: He lacks the ability to use magic or a magical weapon like Cress' eternal sword, but he still manages to keep up. After a while, anyway.

* MagikarpPower: In the SNES game, he comes back extremely underleveled, but train him up, give him the Berserk Bow, and set his AI to recklessly fire, and his damage output will be second only to Cress.

Suzu is a ten-year-old ninja girl from the future. In the PSX remake and beyond, the party meets her in Volt's Temple. (In the SNES version, you met her when ([[GuideDangIt if]]) you managed to find the hidden ninja village, Japoni.) She's next in line for the position of chief of Japoni, since her parents are BrainwashedAndCrazy and ran off. In the PSX remake and beyond, she will join your party after a brief sidequest involving fighting in the Euclid coliseum and finding Japoni. She fights with a nintou.

* ChainmailBikini: Wears barely anthing on her torso except those strips of cloth.

* WomanInWhite: Her first dress.

* AdaptationalNiceGuy: In the OVA. In the game, despite his good intentions, he is all round JerkAss who resorts to threats to get what he wants, giving him the feel of a bad person trying to do good. The OVA removes most of his negative traits.

* AscendedExtra: Was totally unplayble and had a very plain sprite in the original game.

* HeroicLineage [[spoiler:She's a direct descendant of [[Videogame/TalesOfSymphonia Sheena Fujibayashi]], one of the heroes that
helped restore Aselia to its original, pre-Mythos form.]]

* ShockAndAwe: Is able to cast Indignation in the Anime, despite both Martel and the Yggdrasil having died by that point, and his extremely small amount of Elven blood. He's not shown to be able to do this in the game, sticking purely to Clerical Artes. A ContinuitySnarl? We may never know.

* AnimalMotif: Swallow. She even has some of her artes themed and directly named after the famed {{UsefulNotes/SasakiKojiro}}s Tsubame Gaeshi (Swallow Return) technique.

* KatanasAreJustBetter: Subverted - the Muramasa is the best ''slash'' weapon when you can first get it, but has low stabbing power, gets overthrown eventually, and is finally left in the dust by the Arthurian and Norse-based [[InfinityPlusOneSword Infinity Plus One Swords]]

* SwordOfPlotAdvancement- The Eternal Sword. The earlier made it a sort of InfinityMinusOneSword as not only was it necessary for the game, but Cress' most powerful artes, including his [[LimitBreak hi-ougi]] attacks could only be used with said sword. Later versions decreased its power by allowing Cress normal usage, but the sword still remained a very strong weapon.

* BaldOfAwesome - Subverted. It's clear to everybody that he has long silver hair and there's nothing to suggest it's a wig, but Arche suggests it anyway.

* ImprobableWeaponUser- He attacks by swatting at enemies with a book, AND one of those is a dirty magazine not suitable for children found in an old man's drawer. The dictionary and encyclopedia I can compromise, the thin little dirty magazine?
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold- In the beginning, [[CharacterDevelopment until he eventually loses the "jerk" part altogether]].
* TheLeader- Despite not being TheHero, he makes most of the major decisions the party faces and is even given command during TheWarSequence. Then again, he ''is'' the only adult in the party.
* MagikarpPower - Klarth is a mage who first joins the party with no spells at all! He'll end up being a better offensive force than Arche during your stay in the Past era, however.
* MoodWhiplash - Klarth breaks up a humorous moment during a skit in the future where the rest of the party are realizing how old they would be by mentioning that he's long since six feet under in that time period.
* NiceHat- A running gag in the PSX remake.

* SheIsNotMyGirlfriend- With his assistant, Mirald. [[BlatantLies You're a fool if you buy it]].

* SpellMyNameWithAnS- His name was translated as Clark in ''VideoGame/TalesOfEternia'', and as Claus in the Gameboy Advance version of Phantasia, there's a chance he'll become Klarth once more if the route ''Radiant Mythology'' took is taken.

* UnusuallyUninterestingSight- Nobody ever comments on his bizarre outfit and tattoos, even though he's the one always explaining the situation to political and military leaders...

* FlyingBroomstick - Uses a broomstick for flight ''and'' as a weapon.

* IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy- She has a crush on Cress, but knows he likes Mint, so she backs down. [[CleaningUpRomanticLooseEnds And then waits to meet the famous Chester.]]
* ImprobableWeaponUser- Her weapon is a broom. That flies.

* MayflyDecemberRomance- She's a half-elf, so her life span is much longer than a human's. She and Chester end up in a relationship, even though she is over a hundred years older than he is, and he will die long before her.
* MomentKiller - Interrupts a tense moment in Treant Forest between Mint and Cress in NDX.
* NeverSayGoodbye - Arche refuses to bid her friends from 100 and 150 years past her time goodbye when she returns to her own era at the end of the game, but this is because, unlike Klaus, she's a Half-Elf and her lifespan is such that she'll outlive them.

* SlapSlapKiss- with Chester

* WhoWantsToLiveForever- She won't live forever per se, but she'll still vastly outlive all her friends, and does suffer from the angst associated with this trope.

* SpellMyNameWithAnS- His last name was translated as Burklight in the Gameboy Advance version of Phantasia, and it was translated to (the technically correct) Barklight in Radiant Mythology.

* [[YouKilledMyFather You Killed My Little Sister]]: Chester takes it even further than Cress ever did.

* GuideDangIt- Getting her to join you is... annoying, to say the least.
* HighlyVisibleNinja- It's not a bright color, but her suit is pinkish-red.
* LittleMissBadass- You know it!

* BigBad- Although his vast knowledge surrounding the World Tree and his fighting prowess also allow him to fill in as his own army's [[TheEvilGenius Evil Genius]] and [[TheBrute Brute]].

* FantasticRacism- Against humans. Turns into something of a self-fulfilling prophecy, as the humans end up doing exactly what he was assuming they would... but they only do it trying to stop him from attacking them without explanation. The anime changes things around somewhat (see "PoorCommunicationKills").
* HumansAreBastards- Subverted. In the sequel to Phantasia, ''Narikiri Dungeon'', it is revealed that when Dhaos came to Earth and saw the state it was in, his heart was filled with malicious intent, which he himself acknowledged as his hidden voice of evil.
* NotSoDifferent- Cress realizes that they're both trying to achieve the same thing for their respective worlds and they see each other in the same way.

* PoorCommunicationKills- In the game only. In the OVA, he tried to tell the people that they were about to royally screw themselves over, they just refused to listen and called him a monster.

* SealedEvilInACan- he was sealed away by Cress', Mint's, and Morrison's ancestors when he first came to Aselia.
* TheOtherDarrin- Dhaos's [[Creator/KanetoShiozawa first voice actor died.]]

* WellIntentionedExtremist- Not very well done in the game, however. The OVA fixed it by making him much more sympathetic.

* ShockAndAwe- Is able to cast Indignation in the Anime, despite both Martel and the Yggdrasil having died by that point, and his extremely small amount of Elven blood. He's not shown to be able to do this in the game, sticking purely to Clerical Artes. A ContinuitySnarl? We may never know.

* BreakTheCutie- [[spoiler: Has her arm cut off and a bounty placed on her head at age 15/16, her close friend leaves her behind, and when she finally chases him down years later, a fight breaks out and he vanishes, never to be seen by her again.]]

* WhiteMage- Uses Clerical artes and is implied to have rediscovered them after they were lost in Ragnarok.

* BecomingTheCostume- Her main power, as a Narikirishi.
* CuteWitch- Especially in Narikiri Dungeon X, where the first costume that she gets is a witch on a broom.
* FoolishSiblingResponsibleSibling - Always tries to keep Dio in line. Unlike him, she is skeptical about their Narikiri powers.
* KindheartedCatLover - She really, ''really'' adores cats, to the point she can speak to them. Comes in handy when she goes searching for lost kitties.
* NiceHat- Her witch costumes have pretty snazzy hats.

* BadassBookworm - While he's the more mischievous and impulsive of the twins, he also happens to read a lot of history books.
* BecomingTheCostume- His main power, as a Narikirishi.
* BrokenPedestal - The world outside and the heroes who defeated Dhaos don't exactly match Dio's idolised perception of them. When Basil, the elf he admired most of all reveals himself to have gone to the dark side, Dio loses all motivation and returns home.
* FoolishSiblingResponsibleSibling - He jumps at the opportunity for adventure and is quite a bit goofier than his sister.
* HatesBaths - According to the hotsprings event. Rondoline offers to help him wash in order to embarass him into going in by himself. It works.

* TheMedic- In Narikiri Dungeon X, knows Bouncy Dance(? Translation?), which heals 150 hp, plus 10 multiplied by its level.This is a rather good spell, even late game.

* ShamelessFanserviceGirl- Teases Dio in a skit.

* WhoWearsShortShorts- Black spandex short shorts

Cress is an archetypical [=RPG=] hero- he's a HotBlooded, courageous, BookDumb, and slightly oblivious country boy with a sword who gets sucked into an adventure he didn't want. He loves justice, and is motivated by wanting to avenge his DoomedHometown.

* SayMyName- Holy crap, Cress is loud. CHESTERRRRRRR! DHAOSSSSSSSSS! MINNTTTTTT!
* SpellMyNameWithAnS- His name was initially translated as Cless Alvein, but in both ''VideoGame/TalesOfDestiny'' and ''VideoGame/TalesOfEternia'' it was localized as Cress Albain. And in the [=GBA=] version of ''Phantasia'' it was changed to Cress Albane. Cress ultimately makes more sense, as it's a type of herb, like Mint.

A MysteriousWaif Cress meets after being captured and thrown in jail. He helps her escape and find the one person who can help them defeat Dhaos. She is an orphan from a long line of healers with a deep connection to the legendary Unicorn.
