* TheHero: Basically the Protoss version of Jim Raynor, in the first game at least. [[OvershadowedByAwesome Zeratul takes up the mantle afterwards.]] He takes the spot as the main character of ''Legacy''. Overall, he has a good claim for being the true hero of the series, having the most non-combat stuff to do of the PowerTrio (''Legacy'' is half him forging an alliance of factions and repairing the divsions of his race), a coherent character arc, and he commands the series of battles that end both the first and the second games. He's also the one in charge of the grand alliance in the End War.

He's opposed to meeting with Zagara and urges Valerian not to trust her, and nearly calls off the whole event so he can bomb the zerg worlds from orbit when he thinks he's been deceived. The ''Dark Templar Saga'' novels establish she was the Executor who accompanied Zeratul to Aiur in the ''Dark Vengeance'' optional campaign that accompanied ''Brood War''. She may or may not be the Executor of Episode IV as well.[[note]]The timeframe of ''Dark Vengeance'' implies that the Executor of that campaign and Episode IV are the same character, but it was also implied in Episode IV that you were the same Executor as in Episode III. WordOfGod is that Artanis was the Executor in Episode III, but in Episode IV Artanis was the new ''Praetor'', a separate character from the Executor the PlayerCharacter. Blizzard has not yet clarified if the Episode IV Executor is Selendis, or if the Episode IV Executor has been RetGone with Artanis taking their role (and rank).[[/note]]

Aside from Fenix, he's the most durable of the Protoss campaign heroes, can kill most units in seconds, his Lightning Dash deal massive damage to single target and stuns them on top of having a short cooldown, can heal himself and other friendly units for massive amounts of HP and shield, heal himself along with boosting his shield recharge rate, and if he dies he can come back with full health and shields, with a few seconds of invincibility while dealing damage to everything around him. * UncannyValley: InUniverse, this is basically Artanis's reaction to the Purifier: he has Fenix's memories, he acts like Fenix, he identifies as Fenix, and yet, he's very obviously ''not'' Fenix, so Artanis has trouble deciding what to make of him. Talandar eventually chooses to become his own individual, which clears up most of the issue.

Considering that Artanis is the main character of Starcraft 2's Protoss campaign, I think his appearance counts as way more than just a 'cameo'.

* PlayerCharacter: Not just the Protoss PlayerCharacter for ''VideoGame/StarcraftII'', but according to the novels, he was also the Unnamed Executor during Episode III of ''VideoGame/{{Starcraft|I}}''. Notably, he's the only PlayerCharacter of the first game to return as a PlayerCharacter in ''VideoGame/StarcraftII''.

* PreviousPlayerCharacterCameo: According to the novels, he was the player character in Episode III.
