Sonic's friendly rival, Knuckles is the guardian of Angel Island and the Master Emerald. Completely focused on his duty to guard the Master Emerald, Knuckles has been wandering to find it, and keeps to himself. He is short-tempered and easy on forgiveness, but he makes up for it with his courage and fists.

* AdaptationalJerkass: The 4kids dub of episode 74 has him outright say that they should remove the device in Cosmo's head knowing full well that it would impair Cosmo's vision and hearing. In the sub version, he was against it and insisted that there had to be a way to remove it without rendering Cosmo both deaf and blind.

* AdaptationalWimp: During his fight against Shadow, the 4kids dub has Shadow effortlessly knock out Knuckles when he tries to stop him from killing Cosmo. In the original sub, Shadow nearly collapses from exhaustion after defeating Knuckles, it being revealed the only reason he defeated Knuckles so quickly was because Shadow took off his inhibitor rings.
* AesopAmnesia: No matter how many times he's tricked by Eggman's BlatantLies or fake [[HeelFaceTurn Heel-Face Turns]], Knuckles repeatedly fails to learn and always ends up falling for the same tricks and lies again and again. It's even lampshaded in the episode "An Enemy in Need," where Amy outright asks him just how many times he's going to fall for it before it finally sinks it for him that Eggman will ''never'' change his ways.
* AloofAlly: He prefers to do things alone, and tends to get pretty annoyed with Sonic's reckless ways and the group worshiping him. It was only in later episodes, that he grew more attached to the group.

* TheBigGuy: Despite being about the same size as Sonic, he possesses incredible strength, capable of shattering boulders many times bigger than him with his fists.
* BigShutUp: In the episode "Cracking Knuckles", he gives Sonic one for making a mockery out of him. It gave the hedgehog [[OhCrap pause for a moment]] as he realized Knuckles wasn't playing.
* BoisterousBruiser: He's quite a fun guy when in the right mood.
* ButtMonkey: In season 3, he gets more prone to slapstick, and often becomes the butt of gags from the rest of the team (often owed to his [[LonersAreFreaks solitude]]). This is downplayed in the comics, though he's still kinda bumbling in tone. In earlier episodes, he was rather taken seriously as a character, but still had several moments.
* CharacterDevelopment: When first introduced, Knuckles was a temperamental lone Wolf who despised Sonic for accidently sending them to earth. But he calms down and becomes more sociable during the process of the show, despite still being short tempered and abrasive. And though he still confronts Sonic when he acts before he thinks, Knuckles develops a genuine friendship with him in season 2 onward.
* ChronicHeroSyndrome: The reason why he always forgives Dr. Eggman. Knuckles' moral code is to give everyone a second chance at any time, even if it's Eggman who tricked him once too many times.
* TheComplainerIsAlwaysWrong: Downplayed. He tends to be the ButtMonkey due to objecting with Sonic and the others. A RunningGag is made out of the others goading or mocking Knuckles into following things through. This is never called out, even occasions he turned out to be ''right''. However, sometimes, he's actually the voice of reason, like in Episode 10, where he explained the consequences, of playing baseball with Eggman, because of a chaos emerald. The group, however, refused to listen, and did their usual thing, which is mocking him, until he gives in. As it turned out, he was right in the end, and it would save them a lot less trouble, if they just took the emerald from Eggman, and put it to a safe place. This is never called out and the team and even Knuckles act like the effort and fun was worth it.
** Happens again in Cosmic Crisis, where his [[WithFriendsLikeThese supposed friends]] steal the Master Emerald (without even apologizing or telling him about it) and then get mad at him after he gets (rightfully) angry at them.
* CuteLittleFangs: He has a whole set of them when he's mad or excited.
* {{Determinator}}: He's determined to protect the Master Emerald as long as he lives. He's also extremely persistent when fighting his opponents, getting up no matter how much pain he takes.
* DeadpanSnarker: Knuckles is quite good at making snippy remarks, especially at [[VitriolicBestBuds Sonic]].
* DependingOnTheWriter: Knuckles is portrayed as a one of the more serious characters in most episodes, while other episodes make him the ButtMonkey of the show.
* DefeatMeansRespect: He respected Emerl with a handshake and complemented him after being defeated by him.
* TheDreaded: Eggman fights Sonic daily. However, he's ''terrified'' of Knuckles.
* DreadlockRasta: This adaption gives him dreads along with his quills.
* DubNameChange: In the Latin American dub, he is renamed from Knuckles to Nudillos, a literal translation. The Master Emerald likewise is renamed to Esmeralda Madre (Mother Emerald).
* DudeWheresMyRespect: He almost never gets any respect. Even after ''risking'' his life to save someone, he's still treated like the ButtMonkey of the group.
* FieryRedhead: A red echidna who isn't afraid to use his fists.
* FriendlyEnemy: Earlier in season 1, he refused to be Sonic's friend after recklessly putting them to earth, but he still respected him. He also does respect Eggman, despite his extreme dislike towards him.

* TheFriendNobodyLikes: Often the subject of scorn or teasing because of his poor temperament, social skills, and his tendency [[TheComplainerIsAlwaysWrong not to side with team planning.]]
* FriendshipDenial: In a couple of episodes of the first season, he denies being Sonic's friend. This stems of the fact that the finds hedgehog's carefreeness irritating and blames it for getting them transported to another world, not to mention that he gets annoyed by his teasing. It's also implied that he envies Sonic for his freedom and [[MagneticHero popularity]]. As time passes by, though, while he doesn't outright admit it, he has developed a firm bond with Sonic.
* GoodCannotComprehendEvil: He believes in the inherit goodness of people and is always willing to give people second chances. Eggman has used this to his advantage on multiple occasions to trick him into either fighting Sonic or believing he's willing to change his ways, but Knuckles [[AesopAmnesia never learns]].
* GreenEyedMonster: Jealous of Sonic's freedom, popularity, and carefree nature, which is one of the main reasons for their [[VitriolicBestBuds turbulent relationship.]]
* HairTriggerTemper: Even the slightest abrasive comment will trigger a flurry of his punches.
* HeroesWantRedheads: Rouge has a crush on him. Despite it being unknown whether he truly likes her or not, he does have his moments where he is caring for her.
* HorribleJudgeOfCharacter: He's constantly tricked by Eggman, and it's lampshaded every time.
* HotBlooded: Knows exactly when to pick a fight with people who push his buttons.
* IneffectualLoner: At first he detached himself from the group, but he came around.

** He has a massive chip on his shoulder regarding Sonic and often blames him for a lot of things, but he ''does'' have a leg to stand on since Sonic got flashy while facing Eggman and duped his robots into shooting the machine that was containing the Chaos Emeralds, which is what triggered the Chaos Control that left them [[TrappedInAnotherWorld stranded on Earth]] in the first place.
** He gets another moment during the Egg Moon saga, again regarding Sonic. While Sonic destroying Eggman's Sunshine Balls did turn out to be the right thing to do, considering Eggman caused the eclipse that triggered their need in the first place and was keeping it up so the Egg Moon kept blocking the sun as part of a get-rich-quick scheme, Sonic didn't even bother to tell anyone this before he went about smashing the Mirror Towers, and ''only'' did so after [[NotHelpingYourCase fighting both Knuckles and the authorities when they tried to stop him]]. Knuckles states outright that Sonic should have just told them that ''before'' he started knocking the towers down, though Sonic correctly retorts that it should have been obvious what Eggman was doing.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Abrasive, stubborn, somewhat anti-social, sarcastic, and has a huge temper, but ultimately just as heroic as Sonic, cares a lot about doing the right thing, and can be fun to be around when in the right mood.
* TheLancer: A dissenting variant to Sonic.
* MadeOfIron: He is able to win a fight by himself after repetitively getting stomped by a giant alien with metallic body armor and being hit by thunder. He kept getting up while fighting against Yellow Zelkova in episode 72, no matter how much he had to suffer.
* MarriedToTheJob: Spent much of the 1st season thinking about the Master Emerald and Angel Island.
* MegatonPunch: In episode 5, he gave one to Sonic during their fight, and then to Eggman when he realized he tricked him.
* MysteriousPast: He's the LastOfHisKind, that's all he knows.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: Near the end of Season 1, he ends up deciding their best chance at returning to their home world is by making a deal with Eggman and giving him the rest of the Chaos Emeralds so he can induce Chaos Control. Unsurprisingly, the minute Knuckles hands them over, Eggman double-crosses him, takes Chris hostage, and ejects Knuckles from the Egg Fort.
* NobodyCallsMeChicken: A RunningGag was for Sonic and co. to batter Knuckles' ego whenever he didn't want to do what they wanted to.
* NoRespectGuy: He's an exceptionally skilled fighter, a cunning TrapMaster on his home turf, and possess ancient knowledge not known to many. Yet, everyone treats him like an idiot due to his temper and lack of social tact. Even ''Cream'' bullies him.
* OneManArmy: In Episode 36, He beats a bunch of Eggman's robots who mistook him as Sonic. Even before Sonic came to help, Knuckles still defeated twice as many robots at once.
* OnlySaneMan: In Episode 10, he explains to everyone that playing baseball with Eggman is not a good idea, and they refuse to listen. Instead, they mock him into going in with the plan. There's even more glaring when he actually turns out to be right.
* PerpetualFrowner: Most of the time, mostly due his to stoic nature. However, he's genuinely able to crack a smile, when a day is bright, and peaceful.
* PintSizedPowerhouse: He's a short guy with a powerful punch. His [[MeaningfulName knuckles]] have spikes on them, after all.
* SaveTheVillain: In episode 37, he saved Rouge from falling, though they were fighting. He also tried to save Yellow Zelkova from falling down to the lava after a rough fight.
* SelectiveObliviousness: Whenever he's duped by Eggman, no matter how many times it happens, Knuckles adamantly ''refuses'' to even consider the possibility that Eggman is lying to him again, even as his friends tell him as such point-blank and remind him of all the other times he tricked him. Best shown in "An Enemy in Need"; despite his friends' repeated warnings and admonishments, Knuckles only realizes the truth when Eggman himself [[SayingTooMuch lets it slip]], and Sonic is quick to go on an "[[IWarnedYou I told you so]]" routine.

An eight-year old fox with two tails, Miles "Tails" Prower is Sonic's best friend. [[ChildProdigy He is a pilot, mechanic, inventor]] and sidekick to Sonic. While humble and sees Sonic as his idol, Tails grows to become independent and forms a IntergenerationalFriendship with Chuck. He pilots the Tornado bi-plane, and then the X Tornado. Forms a romantic relationship with Cosmo in the third season.

* EasilyCondemned: Despite his fame as a hero, the public is fooled into thinking Sonic is evil in the Shadow saga, and ''again'' in the Egg Moon saga. Knuckles has also been tricked by Eggman into thinking Sonic so evil three times, and Vector mistakenly assumes that Sonic kidnapped Cream in episode 39. In Knuckles and Vector’s case, they were distrusting towards Sonic due to their jealousy of him.

* HundredPercentHeroismRating: Once the public find out about him, Sonic becomes a huge celebrity.

* AdaptationalWimp: In this series, he usually requires a ring to defeat the MonsterOfTheWeek. He even needed one to defeat Shadow during their fight on the ARK.

* AlwaysSomeoneBetter: A lot of characters convey an animosity towards him because of his bravado and popularity. Eggman, Knuckles, and Vector in particular have recurring jealous rivalries towards him. Could be considered this to Sam Speed, but to a lesser extent.

* BewareTheNiceOnes: He's overall a pretty easy-going, and sympathetic guy, but hurting his friends is what sets him off. Best seen when he becomes "Dark Super Sonic" in response to seeing Chris and Cosmo get hurt.

* NotHelpingYourCase: During the Egg Moon saga, Sonic goes about destroying Eggman's Sunshine Balls, which he's using to provide the populace with artificial sunlight after his Egg Moon supposedly malfunctioned and created a permanent eclipse, and ends up making himself a HeroWithBadPublicity in the process. While it turns out he was right to do so (Eggman was in fact deliberately controlling the Egg Moon to keep blocking the sun in order to sell the Sunshine Balls as part of a get-rich-quick scheme and to make himself a VillainWithGoodPublicity), he still doesn't bother telling anyone this before he starts smashing the towers, and only does so after he gets tired of fighting the combined forces of Knuckles and G.U.N., something Knuckles calls him out on; Sonic simply retorts that he thought [[IdiotBall it was obvious]].

* OnlySaneMan: In the episodes "Sunblock Solution" and "Eggman for President," he's initially the ''only'' person who realizes that Eggman's Egg Moon/Sunshine Ball deal is a scam and a lie because if the Egg Moon had truly stopped rotating, then it would stand still and ''not'' keep blocking the sun; even geniuses like Tails and Chuck [[IdiotBall forgot that detail]]. When Knuckles demands to know why he didn't tell them that ''before'' he went about smashing the towers, Sonic retorts that [[ThoughtTheyKnewAlready it should've been obvious]].

* LovedByAll: The people of Earth love Sonic to the point of obsession, and most of Sonic’s friends hero-worship him. Knuckles get annoyed with him and Sam is jealous of Sonic being faster than him, but they do like him. The only people who flat-out don’t like Sonic are the villains.

* PuppyLove: With Cosmo, in Season 3.

* StarCrossedLovers: With Cosmo.
* TragicKeepsake: Cosmo's seed, after he kills her. A plant on the windowsill suggests it's going to sprout into a new Cosmo.
* WouldHitAGirl:
** He has no problem challenging Rouge in battle. [[spoiler: He loses. Rouge gives him points for trying, though.]]
** Tails blasts Cosmo, killing her, in order to stop the plans of the villains. Doesn't mean he's happy about it.

* AntiHero: Though nowhere near as prominent of an example as Shadow, he has trades of this.

* EvenTheLovingHeroHasHatedOnes: While hatred is maybe an exaggeration, the anime (and some ''Franchise/SonicTheHedgehog'' games of its time) tended to punctuate Knuckles' bad attitude and ButtMonkey status by having even Cream, the almost infallibly polite NiceGirl of the team, take fondness in insulting or manipulating him. In at least one episode of the anime, in response to Knuckles not helping willingly, Cream nonchalantly helps steal his Master Emerald to use as a power source, and actually leads a group NoHoldsBarredBeatdown onto him when he complains too much about it. For any other character, even a ''[[AllLovingHero bad guy]]'', Cream has been shown to be horrified by similar coldness.

* InelegantBlubbering: Does this in the Japanese version of when he had to kill Cosmo.
