* FreudianExcuseIsNoExcuse: Silva was sold out to the Chinese and left for dead by [=MI6=], which triggers his wish to destroy them. However, M points out if he hadn't gone rogue, she wouldn't have ''had'' to sell him out. Silva may come off as a TragicVillain, but he is also a psychotic monster who is the victim of his own behavior who irrationally engineers a terrorist campaign solely out of petty revenge against one person, and the OffstageVillainy he alludes to is implied to be even worse, funding a decadent lifestyle via crashing financial markets, orchestrating terrorist attacks or causing and faking disasters.

* SocialDarwinist: He relates a childhood story to a captive James Bond, describing how he spent time with his grandmother on an island, where she taught him how to rid the island of its rat infestation by capturing them in oil drums. He utilizes the image of the trapped rats turning to cannibalism as a metaphor for what the life of a spy does to its participants - namely himself.

Ambiguous Disorder is not a trope anymore, but a redirect to a YMMV entry.

* AmbiguousDisorder: Silva displays a lot of traits of Borderline personality disorder. He's prone to volatile mood swings, suicide attempts and vacillates wildly between periods of idealisation and devaluation specifically with regards to M. Although he hates her and wants to kill her, he's still in love with her, hesitates to kill her when given the chance and is hurt upon seeing that she has been wounded. He has a fear of abandonment as demonstrated by the fact that he didn't attempt suicide because he couldn't stand being tortured anymore, but because he realised that M had abandoned him. He manages to sexualise nearly every conversation and situation and even before his FaceHeelTurn engaged in reckless, potentially self-destructive behaviour, as shown by him taking on the Chinese despite being advised not to. All of these traits give him an undeniable similarity to another Hollywood hero-turned-villain diagnosed with BPD, namely Darth Vader.
