This earlier Reinhardt was also named Gunther but was older, bald, and chinstrap bearded. In the novelizations, the difference in physical appearance is ignored and he is made the commander of the returning expedition. To address the differences, the older Reinhardt is now named Adam with his son now named Gunther.
