[[spoiler:Then we find out she's been tormented and caught in an abusive relationship with her fallen princely brother for ''centuries'' after being stabbed by a mob of townspeople for trying to save him.]]

* ConditionedToAcceptHorror: Anthy seems disturbingly at peace with the idea that she has to obey the commands of anyone she's engaged to, and to accept their potential abuse as it comes. Later, it's revealed that [[spoiler: she is fully aware of how awful it is, but chose to dissociate from the abuse so as to cope with it. Utena treating her like a person causes her to start developing out of this, and by the end, she's chosen to refuse her role as the Rose Bride.]]
