* BerserkButton: For a professional assassin, Rippner has a two:

* CorporateSamurai: He's the self proclaimed 'manager' of an assassination. And although he's claims to be terrible shot, he is not above getting his hands dirty when it comes to violence.

* BewareTheHonestOnes: Rippner claims that he has never lied to Lisa, and he expects Lisa to never lie to him in return, as it would not serve either of them. Lisa lies about her DrinkOrder and later attempts to thwart his plans twice through dishonesty (lying about writing in the self-help book, pretending to still talk on the phone when the phone lines die out, and then writing a message in the lavatory to try and expose Rippner's plans); with time running out, it boils down to him choking her for it. [[spoiler: By the end of the film, he tries to kill her for ruining his plans.]]

* EstablishingCharacterMoment: Depending how it is interpreted, Rippner has several, but a key moment in particular is when he defends Lisa from the irate passenger in the check-in line. The audience gets their first glimpse of the suave character who's been standing behind Lisa for quite some time. While it appears his actions will lead to a RescueRomance[=/=]SamaritanRelationshipStarter with Lisa, a brief close-up of Rippner's intimidating blue eyes staring down the irate passenger is an indicator to the audience that something is ''off'' about him.

* PragmaticVillainy: Rippner starts off as this, preferring to be professional, but willing to rough Lisa up to put her in her place.

* EvenEvilHasStandards: ''Maybe'', depending on how you view a few of his actions towards Lisa. He seems genuinely concerned when he sees her scar [[spoiler:that she got when she was raped]] for the first time, asking her what happened. According to the director, his comment that [[spoiler:the rape]] "wasn't [Lisa's] fault" had a "compassionate undertone", which probably indicates that he genuinely meant it. Of course, this all gets somewhat skewed when you remember his own {{Yandere}} tendencies towards Lisa, and the WordOfGod that he was [[spoiler:''jealous'' of the man that raped Lisa]].

* BrutalHonesty[=/=]BewareTheHonestOnes: Rippner claims that he has never lied to Lisa, and he expects Lisa to never lie to him in return, as it would not serve either of them. * MusclesAreMeaningless / CuteBruiser: It's made clear throughout the movie that beneath that suit, Rippner is a ''wiry'' little bastard, from easily hefting a heavy-looking suitcase into an overheard compartment, to overpowering Lisa, to [[spoiler:barging through being hit with a vase, a ''chair,'' and even that first bullet from the gun]].

* VillainsNeverLie[=/=]WillNotTellALie: Rippner is very clear that he has not lied to Lisa even once despite the hostile situation, and he is hurt that she does lie to him. However, he is in fact ''lying'' when he says this; he tells at least one lie to Lisa on the plane, which puts his entire not-lying status in question. Also, see NoNameGiven.

* GenreSavvy: Despite being tough and determined, Lisa knows perfectly well that, seeing as she has no training or experience in combat, she probably won't last long against Rippner. So she takes every possible measure to get outside help during the final showdown -- she calls Cynthia, her father, and the police at the first opportunity. She also is quick to grab the first thing she can use as a weapon (a hockey stick), and checks the shower when she goes to hide in the bathroom. [[spoiler:Rippner, however, is genre-savvy enough to know not to hide in there.]]

* [[WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes Why Did It Have To Be Flying?]]: She really doesn't like flying on airplanes, and is visibly anxious during the takeoff.

* {{Badass}}: By the film's end, she certainly qualifies.

* TookALevelInBadass: Goes from a mild-mannered hotel manger who doesn't have a mean or violent bone in her body to the {{Badass}} that [[spoiler:outsmarted and outran a terrorist, stabbed him with a pen, and beat the crap out of him with a hockey stick]].

* {{Badass}}: He's a ProfessionalKiller. It comes with the job.
* BadassInANiceSuit: He's impeccably dressed, and rather {{Badass}}.

* RedHeadedHeroine: She has dark red hair, and is the protagonist of the story.

* MusclesAreMeaningless / CuteBruiser: It's made clear throughout the movie that beneath that suit, Rippner is a ''wiry'' little bastard.
