The main character of the series. A teen-aged master of SupernaturalMartialArts, generally assumed to be sixteen years old, though no official age is ever given. Like most of the other cast members, a very contradictory character, possessing both positive and negative attributes -- he can be sensitive and thoughtful one moment, and brash and insulting the next. Cursed to become a GenderBender because of his father's stupidity, then bound in an ArrangedMarriage he never even knew about until he was practically at the girl's doorstep, needless to say he doesn't get on too well with his father.

When it comes to Akane, Ranma's [[NoSocialSkills lack of social finesse]] and Akane's mild [[DoesNotLikeMen dislike of men]] initially drives them to clash more often than not. But, as the story goes on, he gets to know her better and ends up genuinely caring for her as a person.

* AccidentalPervert: Almost never means to do things perverted, and is in fact kind of prudish, but is frequently found in highly incriminating NotWhatItLooksLike scenarios.
* ArrogantKungFuGuy
* AttractiveBentGender: He's attractive in both his forms, but his female form is considered a "babe" by pretty much any average guy who sees her, and Nabiki earns a regular profit by selling nude pictures/handkerchiefs of it.
* AwesomenessByAnalysis: Bordering on MegaManning (specialized in combat situations).
* BatmanGambit: Especially in the manga, really likes to show off by putting together cunning and [[ZanyScheme elaborate plans]]. Unfortunately, ([[HilarityEnsues for him]]), his "puppets" seldom react as they're supposed to for long.
* BelligerentSexualTension: The male half of the template's {{Trope Codifier}}s.
* BerserkButton: Ranma's a fairly forgiving guy, considering the amount of crap he goes through on a regular basis. But if you hurt Akane or insult his masculinity, all bets are off.

* BigEater: Often exaggerated, but does enjoy food and is capable of packing away a considerable amount -- but is usually more inclined towards frequent snacking then putting away massive meals. Somewhat a JustifiedTrope given the sorts of fights he gets into, and unlike his father he usually doesn't allow his appetites to lead him into danger. At least, not after it gets him his AccidentalMarriage with Shampoo and zapped with the Dragon Whisker.
* BitingTheHandkerchief: In the anime as part of at least one WoundedGazelleGambit, the manga version is much more likely to just look tearful/fake cry without a handkerchief.
* {{Blackmail}}: Ranma attempted to use what he thought was a love letter to blackmail Nabiki in the manga. Some of his psychological manipulations probably count as emotional blackmail and he does search for things to use against people.
* BlessedWithSuck: His consumption of rice porridge made with stock from the hair-growing Dragon's Whisker forced him to keep his hair tied up with said Whisker or remain in girl form, otherwise his hair would grow and grow until he used up his whole life's supply.[[spoiler:The effects wore off by the end of that story, however, so he's no longer at risk of baldness (well, unless you count all the hair he "used up" during the fighting.)]]
* BlueEyes: In the anime, which lets him switch between "bluesteel", or blue-tinted grey, as a guy and deep blue as a girl.
* BoobsOfSteel: His female form is arguably the most buxom among the female cast, if you take "her" bust size in comparison to "her" relatively short stature; "she's" also arguably the physically strongest female among the regularly recurring characters.
** "She's" canonically got a better figure than Akane, at least -- bigger breasts, trimmer waist (and in the anime completes the trifecta with bigger hips). It's still often an InformedAttribute, given that the size of ''all'' the teenage females varies quite a bit, and size differences between individuals aren't necessarily apparent in the artwork unless for some reason that aspect's getting played up in the story.
* TheBully: To Gosunkugi (accidentally). Also to Ryoga in Middle School.
* BullyHunter: Has been hired to apprehend hoodlums on occasion, and on his own time he will put a stop to bullying he finds himself witnessing, such as Kodachi's continued brutalization of the already-defeated Furinkan gymnastic team or the masked kids that were attempting to rob Gosunkugi.
* CanNotSpitItOut: Out of everyone in the manga, ''including Ryoga'', he has the worst case of this. Even in the few times he acknowledges his feelings for Akane via inner monologues, while she's being nice to him in turn, he can't get a single word out and is frustrated by this.
* CatapultNightmare: On the multiple occasions that Ranma has a nightmare, he invariably wakes up with a scream.
* CeilingCling: A favorite habit of his. It's useful for purposes of escaping trouble or eavesdropping, but he's often seen doing it for no plot-related purpose, particularly in the manga. Possibly he's training, or possibly Takahashi just wants to show off his skills, or both.
* TheChewToy: Frequently doesn't deserve the punishment he gets -- or at least to be punished ''that'' much.
* ChickMagnet: Has attracted a number of female suitors, some but not all through {{Arranged Marriage}}s. While probably not the knockout his female form is implied to be, or quite reaching {{bishounen}} status, Ranma can be assumed to be fairly attractive, in peak physical shape, and his often cocky attitude [[AllGirlsWantBadBoys probably doesn't hurt]].
* ChronicHeroSyndrome: More often than not, because [[IWasJustPassingThrough he was just passing through]], but sometimes just because "it's a martial artist's duty" (to help those in need.)
* CombatPragmatist: Ties in with TryingToCatchMeFightingDirty below.
* ComplimentBackfire: Due to a very bad case of foot-in-the-mouth, even when he's not trying to insult Akane she gets pissed at him.
* {{Crossdresser}}: When dressed as a girl and turned back into a guy.
* [[CrossdressingVoices Crossdressing Voice]]: English only. For the first three seasons of the dub, boy-type Ranma was played by a woman.
* {{Curse}}: Multiple. There's the obvious GenderBender curse, but he also has one based on his hair constantly growing when not controlled by a magical item, and gains (and loses) others during the series' run -- being unable to stomach hot water, for example.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: By the late manga, the non-canonical artwork would most commonly show Ranma's female form with red hair and red eyes.
* DeadpanSnarker: Far more so in the manga than the anime.
* DeadlyDodging + NonchalantDodge + ExcuseMeWhileIMultitask + WithMyHandsTied: These tropes are all closely related and all apply to Ranma.
* EnemyWithout: In the anime, Happosai once used a magical incense called [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin Personality Splitter]] to separate Ranma's female form from his male form, in hopes that she would be so happy with being her own person she would model underwear for him. Of course, it turned out that as an embodiment of Ranma's "yin side", it was basically Ranma's evil half come to life, trying to seduce Ranma and take control of him.
* EnjoKosai: Willing to accept offers of food from guys who mistake him for a real girl, which Akane disapproves of, but is also happy to crush their feelings and chase them off by revealing he's really a guy. He also purposefully goes on dates to acquire things like information or items from people (he is not that interested in money but still went on the dates to be compensated) like Tatewaki or Shampoo.
* EverythingsBetterWithSpinning: His most powerful technique, the Hiryu Shoten Ha, uses circular movements to generate a powerful wind vortex. It's essential to getting back his strength after he is BroughtDownToNormal, and revisions of the technique are ultimately responsible for beating his two greatest adversaries (Herb and Saffron) in the manga, as well as Prince Kirin in the anime.
* ExpressiveHair + PrehensileHair + SlipknotPonytail: His pigtail is independently mobile and responsive to his moods, has come undone very easily during at least one arc, and he has used his hair as a weapon.
* {{Fanservice}}: In both genders!
* TheFettered: Comes with being a martial artist.
* FieryRedhead: Girl-type. In the anime, which not only gives him the right hair color but also makes him more aggressive and forthright than in the manga. Still has some of the right personality traits in the manga, though.
* FiveFingerDiscount: Ranma is not averse to stealing things that he needs, although it's mostly food.
* FlawExploitation: Not only will Ranma use any flaw you happen to have (such as a curse, addiction to female undergarments, or getting mad when you see breasts) he will actively seek them out (for example he searched Nabiki's room twice in the manga looking for something to use against her or give him a way to blackmail her).
* GenderBender: Due to his curse.
** Which makes Ranma one of the few ''male'' examples of ActionGirl (and HotAmazon, by proxy) out there, and a CuteBruiser to boot.
* GenderBenderFriendship: Subverted -- when Ranma first enters the series, it looks like Ranma's female form will allow him to get closer to the somewhat androphobic Akane. However, the fact "she" is really a transformed "he" is revealed minutes later and Akane promptly trusts him ''less'' because of it.
* HairColors: The first volume of the manga gave him black hair in either form. The anime changed it to red hair as a girl, presumably to make it easier for Ranma to be identified, and the non-canonical artworks by the author portrayed both male and female forms with a wide variety of hair and eye colors.
* HatesBeingTouched: Gets extremely nervous when girls try to do something physical to him, and, being vehemently heterosexual, he gets ''extremely'' violent if men try something on his "girl form". Part of the blame for this might be because he is inevitably battered by Akane if she sees him in something that looks compromising, while the other girls vary between aggressively flirting with him and hitting him for pretty much the same reason.
* HealingFactor: Lampshaded and otherwise commented on by other characters in the series.
* HelloNurse: See GenderBender.
* HeroicBSOD: Everything up to the Cat Fist.
* HilariouslyAbusiveChildhood: Many of the mentioned things from Ranma's childhood would have gotten him either killed or taken by social services [[SocialServicesDoesNotExist if they found out]], but they're all {{played for laughs}}.
* IHaveBoobsYouMustObey: He takes full advantage of his girl form to get free (or at least cheaper) food.
* IHaveTheHighGround: Fond of high places and a common means of travel for him via [[InASingleBound extraordinary leaps]] and RoofHopping.
* IWantToBeARealMan: Both in the literal sense (i.e. get rid of the {{Curse}}) and the metaphorical sense... the fact he's got to commit {{Seppuku}} if his mother ever judges him to be "unmanly" doesn't make things any better.
* ImprobableWeaponUser + ImprovisedWeapon + ExoticWeaponSupremacy: Will use anything as a weapon including, but not limited to, spoons, boulders, rocks, pencils, paper fans, bos, staffs, brooms, noodles, tennis racket, water, magic items, pinwheels, explosives, his own hair, bras, [[FastballSpecial P-chan, and other people]].
* ImprobableAimingSkills: Able to flick a stub-sized pencil from across the classroom into the hole of a fifty-yen coin in his teacher's hand... all while clinging to the ceiling.
* IndyPloy: When a BatmanGambit fails, or he just doesn't feel he has the time/it's worth the effort to pull off, Ranma can wing it like a pro. Probably the best at it in the series.
* InnocentCohabitation
* InnocentFanserviceGirl: Played with, depending on the RuleOfFunny. It's not that Ranma is "innocent" or unaware of social rules per se, but simply doesn't care about being seen topless (or, in very few times, completely naked) in female form because he always thinks of himself as male. Ranma even attempted to justify it early on when called out on it, asserting "Why should ''I'' have feminine modesty?" However, if someone ''else'' causes her to be naked, she ''will'' cover herself up... and retaliate.
* InterspeciesRomance: Ranma was nearly forced into this by the Cursed Scribble Panda, who wanted to date him before getting sealed up again.
* JerkAss: Ranma can be really petty, spiteful, egotistic, or manipulative, especially when irritated, pushed, or just uncomfortable, but [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold usually isn't as bad as he claims to be (or as others claim he is)]].
** JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Despite everything Ranma is shown as a generally very helpful and compassionate sort when he clearly notices that someone is in serious trouble, including people he just met if asked for assistance, and will recurrently feel extremely bad after he has gone too far. He even saved Herb's and Nabiki's lives, and felt sad for [[JerkAss Happosai]] when the latter felt abandoned by his students.
*** JerkWithAHeartOfJerk: [[{{YMMV}} It's a matter of personal opinion]] as to which of the two versions of Ranma (Manga vs. Anime) is more JerkAss and which is more JerkWithAHeartOfGold. Anime-Ranma is a little more of a CompassionateCritic and more likely to deliberately mock, tease or insult someone in general. Manga-Ranma is more of a minor ManipulativeBastard.
* KungFuKid: He's a teenager and one of the best martial artists around. It helps he's been training since he could walk.
* LightningBruiser: Comparatively high superhuman levels of speed, strength, endurance and skill. On the one hand, he can punch a single spot hundreds of times so fast it looks like a single punch; on the other, even an offhand swipe with his fist to swat at an annoyance can crush a concrete roller[[hottip:*:the kind used to flatten the ground of sports fields]] into rubble.
* LiteralSplitPersonality: In the anime's LivingShadow and EnemyWithout episodes.
* LivingShadow: In the anime, a {{filler}} episode has Ranma buy some magical incense to bring his shadow to life for intense training. It's perfectly benign at first, but Ranma overdoses on the stuff, awakening his unrestrained desires in it and allowing it to act on its own until Ranma takes it down.
* ManipulativeBastard: A wannabe in terms of sheer ZanyScheme silliness, and unsuitable, mostly kind, non-sociopathic personality, whereas Nabiki is the real deal, and even Shampoo seems better at it. He usually ends up thwarted by his own conscience, or by the outlandish half-baked nature, irrationality, or the sheer unpredictability of his rivals, friends, enemies, and acquaintances. Basically, he's a bit manipulative, and can make fun of Ryoga or Kuno with a PaperthinDisguise, but he definitely isn't a bastard, and will not deliberately cause actual harm.
* MeaningfulName: "Saotome Ranma" translates to "Swift Maiden's Wild Horse"
* MindControl: Alongside Akane, is the most likely to get hit with it in the series. He's also perfectly willing to use it against others in the manga, most notably trying to brainwash Happosai with "suggestion incense" to change Pantyhose Taro's EmbarrassingFirstName and going to the Amazons for a LovePotion to use on Ryoga in the first Akari story.
* MsFanservice: Again, see GenderBender.
* MurderousThighs: Particularly in female form, quite adept at using his legs as rudimentary arms to grab, hold and throw others.
* MySignificanceSenseIsTingling + SpiderSense: Not played up much in general, but always seems to know when something important is going on or when he's about to be attacked.
* NewTransferStudent: He was this in the very early series as he arrived at Furinkan High.
* NoSocialSkills: [[InsultToRocks Most animals would probably have better social skills]]. However, he is actually surprisingly well-adjusted, considering he was raised by Genma.
* NotSoDifferent: To many or even all of his rivals and fiancees -- Ranma has no qualms with cheating, lying, stealing, cheap shots, outright {{Mind Control}}ling people or, well, just about anything short of actually killing someone.
* NotWhatItLooksLike: Ranma gets caught in these situations roughly once per storyline. Including a few times with ''[[HoYay Ryoga]]''. It's pretty much never what it looks like.
* OppositeSexClone: From a certain point of view, Ranma's GenderBender nature basically allows him to be his own opposite sex clone (it's stated a number of times that the two forms look enough alike to be mistaken for twins). More literally, the anime and the manga each have a {{filler}} story where Ranma gets an independent copy of his female form made. In the manga, it's a spirit-clone created by a lonely ghost that tries to seduce him. In the anime, Happosai creates a splinter-spirit that turns out to embody Ranma's evil side and which tries to seduce Ranma -- [[LampshadeHanging Soun and Genma note]] that they seem like a perfect couple and agree that this makes sense as they are [[ScrewYourself two halves of the same person]].
* PimpedOutDress: During the Martial Arts Dining arc female Ranma wears several of these, including accessories such as necklaces and flowers. Various other stories have her in outfits that probably fall in this trope as well, such as cheongsams and kimonos.
** Ranma is also one of the rare examples of a male falling under this trope, as he is quite willing to dress up in fancy outfits in male form when the occasion arises.
* PleasePutSomeClothesOn: Told to him several times in both forms.
* RapidFireFisticuffs: After completing the [[IAmNotShazam Kachu Tenshin Amaguriken training]], Ranma devises his own trick based on this trope. While he never [[CallingYourAttacks names it]] in the manga, the anime and video games confused its name with the speed training and it has become more or less adopted in {{Fanon}} as the actual Kachu Tenshin Amaguriken. Further training for the "Parlay du Fois Gras" honed this speed for precision through stuffing an opponent's mouth with food without being seen; and the Umisenken involves a "snake-fist" technique with open-handed spear strikes towards the weak spots of an opponent's back, or stealing things swifter than a normal eye can follow... including floorboards.
* RealMenHateSugar: A subversion; he, in the anime, personally ''loves'' ice cream, but would not be caught DEAD saying he does, much less going to restaurants and ordering them (it's not manly, after all). Fortunately, his "curse" allows him to openly and gleefully order chocolate sundaes with a cherry on top in public; heck he even delights in the fact the young and impressionable clerks will sometimes give him free scoops or even free parfaits!!
* RealMenWearPink: Quite skilled at various domestic habits, particularly cooking, and hates a messy house so much he once forgot about a mission (not to mention the fact he was ''breaking into the flat in question'') to clean someone else's flat. He even started cleaning it up again when the owner returned and promptly made a new mess. Admittedly, a lot of his domestic skills can be presumed to stem from the fact he's been taking care of himself for as long as he could remember. In the anime, he also often wears a pastel orange shirt with a dinky little red bowtie, in a more literal version of the trope.
* [[RuleSixtythree Rule 63]]: and it's CANON
* SheFu: A heavy basis of his fighting style in either form, and he fought like this ''before'' becoming a GenderBender.
* ShipperOnDeck: Actively and successfully set up Ryoga and Akari, attempted to hook up Cologne and Happosai, willing to help others such as Mousse and his mirror clone, etc.
** Subverted in a time-travel episode of the anime, where he is the one to speak up the most about the possibility of Young!Happosai and Young!Cologne possibly hooking up, then calls Akane and Shampoo out for trying to make them get together.
* ShowSomeLeg: Not at all above abusing this, especially against Happosai.
* SleevesAreForWimps: His iconic clothes are short-sleeved or sleeveless Chinese shirts.
* SlippingAMickey + InstantSedation: Ranma on occasion has drugged, or attempted to drug, people (for example: tried to add knockout powder to Kuno's food, got Happosai drunk, used chloroform on Happosai, etc.). Once, it backfired; in another occasion, the other party did the same thing at the same time to Ranma's drink.
* SmallNameBigEgo: Especially in the manga
* StealthHiBye: The manga version enjoys doing this, particularly to Akane, but has done it to others as well. The anime version gets a few cases of it in as well.
* SuperStrength: A pair of early examples is Ranma, in female form supported Ryoga on her head while Ryoga pulled two artificial icebergs out of the water to crush Mikado Sanzenin between them in mid-air, and then threw at least one of them in a swift movement. Female form Ranma was also able to use Ryoga's heavy combat umbrella, which a regular person can't even budge with two hands, with apparent ease, for example being able to effortlessly leap from the ground to a treetop while carrying it. The most reliable gauge may be when female Ranma picked up a boulder that was several times her size and effortlessly swam with it swiftly enough to ram it into the mouth of the {{Orochi}} of Ryugenzawa in order to stop it from eating Akane, despite it having carried her off several seconds/panels before. WordOfGod states that his female form is weaker however, and if his transformation follows the average female-to-male ratio, he would be around twice as strong in natural form, but that's strictly best-guess speculation, with the exact relationship unknown. Male Ranma is able to effortlessly pin Shampoo to a wall.
* SuperSpeed: Even from the series' beginning, he demonstrated this ability, tapping an insulting translation of Kuno's name onto Kuno's forehead without anyone noticing. Then, when Kuno and Ranma had their real fight, he managed to kick every single vulnerable point on Kuno's torso while making it look like he merely swept his leg up from the ground to above Kuno's head. A bit later on, he hit Mikado Sanzenin over 500 times in less than 5 seconds. All of this ''before'' he learned any speed-boosting techniques, after which he became even faster and more precise -- he was able to hit Ryoga a few hundred times so swiftly that it looked like a single strike, dispose of food so rapidly that viewers couldn't see it in the Chardin arc and, in one anime filler OAV, and learned to run so quickly he could briefly speed across water without falling in. He can basically move at around 2-4 times the speed of sound, but not run that swiftly.
* SuperToughness: Bordering on NighInvulnerable levels sometimes, and definitely proof to regular firearms, although Ryoga is emphasized as being considerably tougher than him after learning the Bakusai Tenketsu.
* SweetTooth: In the anime, he is shown to ''adore'' ice cream, but is so afraid of looking unmanly that he always goes into girl form when he goes to buy some. The fact he can get more for less by playing on his female form's looks is all the more reason for him to shift shapes.
* TheTease
* ThroughHisStomach: He loves food, the girls around him know that, and so they are frequently trying to use food to get some attention from him. It actually doesn't work quite as often as you might think, even when it's not Akane who's trying it.
* TigerVersusDragon: He's actually both, depending on the fight. He's a tiger to Ryoga's lion but his signature technique, Hiryu Shoten Ha, invokes dragon imagery and he is a dragon to Saffron's phoenix.
* TryingToCatchMeFightingDirty: Prefers to [[BeatThemAtTheirOwnGame fight upfront in tests of martial skill]], but if he's at a disadvantage (regardless if his opponent fights without trickery as a raw test of ability) Ranma only follows regulations if explicitly stated before the match, and frequently uses distractions, cheap shots, taunting, ambushes, or strategy to exploit weak spots. Most likely to use HeyCatch, LookBehindYou, LoopholeAbuse, TalkToTheFist and TrashTalk, specifically, though has used other ones on occasion such as the memorable use of Ryoga/P-chan as both HumanShield and flail. An entire story called "The Unmanliest" was devoted to showing that both he and Mousse will stoop to using lots of dirty tricks if motivated.
** Well he ''is'' the effective heir to the [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin "Saotome School Of Anything Goes Martial Arts"]].
* {{Ventriloquism}}: Possibly used a few times in the manga, when hiding behind someone else, although when these situations have been rendered in anime format it's not displayed as modulating voice projection, but rather as plot induced IdiotBall.
* WallCrawl: Scrambling up walls, poles and other sheer surfaces is a frequent habit of his, either to escape or gain a height advantage.
* WeakButSkilled: Comparatively speaking. Ranma is actually pretty powerful, but tends to use a combination of skill speed, strategy, and power to win a fight. In battles against opponents that are clearly displayed to have more raw offensive power than himself, such as the {{Orochi}}, Happosai, Saffron, Rouge, Ryoga, Herb, or even Ryu Kumon, he has either won or obtained his objective because of his quick thinking, luck, trickery, [[AttackItsWeakPoint using exploitable weak spots]], powerful weaponry, etc rather than by matching them outright.
* [[WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes Why Did It Have To Be Cats?]]: Screams in terror and invariably faints or runs away at the mere sight of housecats and the ghost cat.
* WigDressAccent: Frequently puts on a disguise to better [[ManipulativeBastard manipulate]] people. However, in canon said "disguises" literally almost always only consist of simply changing her clothes, and otherwise look exactly the same. As this is a comedy series this is explicitly used as a RunningGag in that no matter how ridiculously ''bad'' the disguises almost consistently are Ryoga will be tricked. For example, in the "waterproof soap" story Ryoga recognises Ranma and Shampoo, but when they instantly change into swimsuits he doesn't. When informed who they are he says "[[{{LampShade}} so, your ingenious disguises fooled even ''me'']]. To Ranma's surprise this doesn't work on any of her schoolmates in the Tsubasa story, but the female form in itself can be useful against people who have never seen it before, such as Principal Kuno, even with just a swimsuit, or a dress and P-chan be enough to make tranced Happosai see a mother and her baby. Even Akane managed to see through the by far most ambitious disguise Ranma ever donned - a wig, glasses, make-up, and big dress.
* WouldntHitAGirl: Occasionally makes mention of this, but his actions prove this is pretty much a facade to either avoid damaging his reputation (if seen attacking a girl as a guy in public, he'd be seen as a thug) or to try and get out of an argument with Akane. So, ultimately subverted: [[WouldHitAGirl has no problems with fighting girls]], and while slightly more likely to go after them as a girl himself (to avoid looking bad), won't hesitate to take them on as a guy if he deems the situation calls for it. Basically, he has stated that he strongly ''dislikes'' hitting them, and, if he has enough of an advantage, will usually try to incapacitate them without causing any damage, but if he/she clearly does not, the situation is too dangerous, or (as with Konatsu) it is proven that holding back in this way will simply cause him to lose, he stops being chivalrous/considerate.

A sixteen year old OrdinaryHighSchoolStudent (or at least the closest you'll get in this series), Akane Tendo is a generally pleasant, friendly girl who is compassionate, helpful and self-sacrificing even to her rivals. However, she's also hot-tempered, very insecure, finds the ArrangedMarriage situation very [[BelligerentSexualTension awkward]] and is notoriously stubborn, which means there are times she's come off as ThePesci to Ranma Saotome. In general, though, they do get on well enough (although Ranma recurrently mocks her most sensitive spots, and Akane sometimes gives as good as she gets), she frequently helps him out or cheers for him, and is just as willing to make heroic sacrifices for him as he is for her. And despite her frequent [[SheIsNotMyGirlfriend denials]] she is extremely possessive and jealous when it comes to Ranma and easily angers when she finds him in the arms of his other fiances.

Other female characters may be even more nonchalant about it, but Akane is still the one most often seen hitting Ranma and, unlike her rivals for its hand, she's never made out to be a villain or unsuitable as a love interest because of it.
* ACupAngst: Doesn't usually make a big deal about it, but she isn't happy with her breast size at all. She is very quick to take offense at slights (real or perceived) from Ranma about her breasts, gets visibly angry in the first volume/episode when she sees Ranma's girl form naked and realizes that, yes, s/he really is bustier than Akane is, and in the "Bust Battle" manga arc, she not only suggests Nodoka bring "Ranko" bra shopping with them because she's ticked that Ranma boasted about his girl form's larger growth spurt over her own, but is shown to have a whole box full of things meant to make her breasts grow.
* [[ArrogantKungFuGuy Arrogant Kung-Fu Chick]]: Is proud of her martial arts skill and being the heir to the dojo, but that gets blown out of the water with the appearance of Ranma and the others, so she falls into CantCatchUp status. She's also very stubborn with her pride, refusing to accept help from Ranma even though she has no chance of winning a fight (i.e. Dojo Destroyer). She also falls under this in cooking, refusing to admit that a guy is better at cooking than her.
* BelligerentSexualTension: The female half of the TakahashiCouple template's {{Trope Codifier}}s.
* BerserkButton: Do not do perverted things around her... or [[NotWhatItLooksLike get caught with a naked woman in the bathtub]].

** CharacterExaggeration: At the same time though, her nature as a {{Tsundere}} got majorly [[{{Flanderization}} Flanderized]] as the series went on. Although that may just be her more bad-tempered reactions sitting less easily with her increasingly benevolent portrayal.
* ChronicHeroSyndrome: Will stop by and help ''anyone'' in distress that happens to cross her path, even her bitter enemies. And if someone goes and ''asks'' for her help, she'll never say no, whether it means stepping up for the Rhythmic Gymnastic team or venturing alone into a "monster"-filled forest. At least once, her charitable nature has come back to haunt her, when the strangers she helped out and welcomed into her home turned out to be rivals for the Tendo School's legacy.
* ClothesMakeTheSuperman: The battle dougi in a manga-only arc made her stronger than even Ranma.
* CordonBleughChef: As much as she needs to learn to slow down and stop being so rough, learning that recipes aren't suggestions and that simply throwing in whatever she thinks ''might'' make it taste good, or cover up the mistakes she already made, would help. A ''lot''.
* CovertPervert: For being such a prudish girl who freaks out at the mere sight of a naked man, Akane is also the quickest person of the cast to see the perverted potential in just about any whacky set of hijinks. ''Especially'' if it involves Ranma. A first-rate example is when Kuno was about to ask for a wish to a magical rock: while she and Ranma discussed the situation, Akane imagined Kuno asking for female!Ranma to love him, and ''inmediately'' came up with the ImagineSpot of Kuno taking advantage of this to rape Ranko on the spot. She ends up giving a BigNo.
** There's also there's her RescueRomance fantasy from the manga, including GladToBeAliveSex and all.
* CuteBruiser: Until Ranma showed up, she was the second physically strongest person in Furinkan, and is still one of its most popular girls.

* [[DoesNotLikeMen Does Not Like Boys]]: She actually ''says'' it in so many words at the beginning of the series, and given that she's severely harassed nearly the entire male half of the student body, it's not hard to see why (thank you, Kuno). But seeing as she's later shown to be very friendly towards regular boys such as Gosunkugi, Ryoga, Mousse, and even Kuno (provided he isn't trying to get romantic with her), either she got over it or was exaggerating out of frustration.
* DomesticAbuser: One of the biggest complaints about the series.
* DoubleStandard: In the first chapter/volume, which is something of a NeverLiveItDown moment for her. When it's pointed out that she and Ranma saw each other nude because she walked in on him, she insists that all of the blame is Ranma's, as he's a boy and she's a girl and "it's different when a girl looks at a boy". When Ranma, in female form, unintentionally walks in on her again, she slaps him/her. Nabiki points out that it should be okay, as they were both girls, but Akane refuses to comment.
** Perhaps similarly, she is horrified at the thought of being a worse cook than a boy when she discovers Ranma is actually quite skilled in the kitchen.
** Upon first meeting, and sparring with, Ranma, she confesses how much she'd hate being beaten by a boy. Might not actually count though, seeing as how, at the time, she was being forced to fight off a mob of boys every school day for fear of being taken as the girlfriend by the one who beat her.
* DudeMagnet: Akane is insanely popular with the opposite sex. She had several dozen male classmates step up to Tatewaki Kuno's challenge of having to beat her to date her, and those may just have been the ones who continued to face her despite her violent defeats of them -- there may have been even more to begin with, given her track record. Even her temper, ineptitude at cooking, stubborn pride and violent impulses fail to deter them; not only did the aforementioned mob return to challenging Akane after they believed she was no longer engaged to Ranma (in the manga, in the anime they sincerely got over her), Kuno seems to consider Akane all the more attractive after she has finished beating on him, and Ryoga Hibiki seems oblivious to her less pleasant side. And that's not getting into the numerous [[MonstersOfTheWeek minor male villains]] that fall for her.
* FoeTossingCharge: Akane had to use one of these to fight her way to school every day...until Ranma turned out to be her fiancé, after which they backed off. She still has the ability [[ContinuityNod throughout the series]], and shows it off on a number of occasions.
* GlassCannon: Akane is incredibly strong and can easily dish out enough strength to actually hurt the likes of Ranma. However, she does not seem to be able to take the damage anywhere near as well as she can dish it out, and also seems to lack the HealingFactor many of the other main characters have -- there are two major examples of this, but her increase in skill in the later half of the series does raise the possibility that she takes some step towards mitigating this trope. Firstly, she sprains her ankle with a misstep the day before the Martial Arts Rhythmic Gymnastics match and is told it will take long enough to heal that she'll have to either drop out of the match or get someone to substitute for her. Secondly, in the Dojo Destroyer arc, she hurts her hand bad enough while punching down a wall that Dr. Tofu has to bandage it and tell her not to use it for a day or so. When she unthinkingly punches the Dojo Destroyer about an hour or two later, she hurts it so badly she can't use it any more for the rest of the fight.
* HyperspaceMallet: [[CharacterExaggeration A gross exaggeration]] by {{Fanon}}, to the point she's the page image. In truth, she doesn't use a mallet any more than Ranma, or even Soun, does, not when any blunt object will do: a book, a lamp, a park bench, a stone lantern, the dinner table... ("A Honda Accord" in one of Viz Video's [[RuleOfFunny deliberately exaggerated liner notes]]...)
* IOweYouMyLife: Akane's main motivation for staying with Shinnosuke and his grandfather to help them and care for them, at least until they found a way to heal Shinnosuke permanently... however long that took.
* ImprobableAimingSkills: She usually manages to hit Ranma with whatever she throws unless he finds a shield. Whether it's a stone, table, sink, or other thrown object. She once managed to nail Gosunkugi with an apple by throwing it ''around a corner'', and early in the manga she made a perfect shot on an erratic Ranma with a severely-weighted arrow. He snapped it in half, but the shot was true. And then there's her accuracy at throwing hot water kettles over long distances...
* JerkAss <- -> JerkWithAHeartOfGold
* KidSamurai: Shown to specialise in a wide variety of archaic samurai weaponry, and be just short of Kuno in sword skills. However, strangely, despite being shown as a more skilled armed than unarmed fighter, and that this (and battle auras) in fact is the family fighting specialization of her father, fanon tends to play her as a comparativvely untalented karateka. Possibly because she is, surprisingly, seen training and fighting with her bare hands (or improvised weapons) more often then using the actual samurai weapons she's trained to use.
** FridgeBrilliance: Akane may not use the samurai weapons she's clearly so good at because she doesn't like the comparisons it invites (if only in her own mind) to Tatewaki Kuno, her KidSamurai StalkerWithACrush. [[WildMassGuessing It may have even been her skills with those weapons that caused him to start chasing her in the first place.]]
* LethalChef: Has no culinary talent whatsoever, despite (or rather, ''because of'') how hard she tries. Related to her penchant for trying to "[[CordonBleughChef improve]]" recipes. Slightly better in the manga where she leaned to make edible curry. In the anime she learned to prepare tofu during a cooking contest (which isn't saying much because tofu is PRE-MADE anyway).
** This may be due to her having only the ingredients she needed on hand in that contest, since she generally tries to put in stuff that's out of place, and often pays no attention to what she's adding.
* LittleMissBadass: When she ''is'' BadAss, that is.
* LittleMissSnarker: Oh yeah.
* LoveAtFirstPunch: Akane's violent tendencies chase off nobody, and Kuno actually seems to take them as a sign of affection. In the second NonSerialMovie, Prince Toma actually seems to fall for Akane ''because'' she slaps him in the face and scolds him.
* MasterOfDelusion: Beats this trope into the ground when Ryoga/P-chan is concerned. Despite the overwhelming evidence that's come her way -- including Ryoga transforming and "disappearing" right beside her -- she's never put it together that they are the same person. At one point she noticed an identical mark drawn on both Ryoga and her pet, and concluded that "the same person must have drawn on both of them!"
* MySignificanceSenseIsTingling + SpiderSense: Frequently senses surprise attacks, particularly from Kodachi, and often notices something amiss when something important happens elsewhere. Most notably, she somehow telepathically hears Ryoga when he almost dies fighting Lime, and is certain she heard Ranma's anguished profession of love for her, even though he insists he didn't say it aloud.
* ObliviousToLove: In regards to Ryoga's infatuation. Sensing a trend, here? [[AlternateCharacterInterpretation Some think]] her very first-hand display of how Ryoga can lose control of his strength when he gets overjoyed by being given affection from a girl may have intimidated her into pretending to not notice Ryoga's feelings for her, on the basis that, whether or not she believes Ryoga is into her specifically, she has legitimate reasons to think that Ryoga is too dangerous to be a possible love interest of hers. This theory stems from the fact that she outright declares, at the end of the Waterproof Soap story, that Ryoga is far too dangerous to be her boyfriend and he'd need to find a girl much stronger and tougher than Akane is.
* {{Pettanko}}: An odd example, in that she fits the personality type, but not so much the build. Akane's not flat-chested, but she has very low self-esteem in regards to feminine things. Worse, girl-type Ranma ''is'' much better endowed and not above teasing her about it.
* PervertRevengeMode: When things are depicted seriously, Ranma outclasses her to the point that he can be reading a manga and not paying the slightest attention to a dead serious Akane, and yet he will not only dance around her every attack, but take her down in one strike (by sitting on her back). If Ranma has done anything that Akane can justify as the actions of a pervert, Akane can beat him senseless in her righteous indignation.
* PoliticallyIncorrectHero: YourMileageMayVary, but the frequent UnfortunateImplications of AbuseIsOkayWhenItsFemaleOnMale that result from her and Ranma's relationship can make her look less than angelic. More than one anti-Akane reader/viewer has commented that if Ranma treated Akane to the same sort of violence (physical and otherwise) that she treats him with in canon, then, slapstick or not, he'd be seen as the series' villain and not her true love.
** There is also the whole "insisting on trying to talk the apparent lesbian into finding a boyfriend" deal in the Tsubasa Kurenai story. Plus, she seems a bit eager to assume Ranma is willing to rape women if he thinks he can get away with it in the manga.
* SelectiveObliviousness: Mainly in two areas: that Ranma usually ends up in incriminating situations without helping it; and that she shouldn't trust the claims of Shampoo, Kodachi, or Ukyo when Ranma is involved.
* ShinyMidnightBlack
* ShipperOnDeck: Seems quite happy for Ryoga when it appears he and Ukyo have a relationship going on, and tells Ryoga to his face that she's glad to hear he's found someone after hearing about the situation with Akari. In the anime, she makes it quite blatant that she believes [[MayDecemberRomance Kasumi and Doctor Tofu]] belong together.
* {{Shorttank}}: Fairly average in terms of height and a little on the slow side in the chest development department. That her first "official" rival and even her fiancé are bustier then she is just makes her look worse off.
* SuperDrowningSkills: A reoccurring plot point is that Akane cannot swim at all. Luckily Ranma knows a variation of [[CPRCleanPrettyReliable CPR]]. Precisely why she can't swim, even she doesn't know, and it really bothers her -- the manga even gives her an IdiotBall by having her reveal in one story that she figures she just hasn't figured out how to breathe the water yet. And be startled as hell to find out that this is '''not''' what you're supposed to do in order to swim. But even then, when she realizes she has to hold her breath, she lacks any sort of natural buoyancy and sinks to the bottom of the pool, justifying the manga calling her a "hammer girl" (for her inability to float, not... [[IncrediblyLamePun yeah]].) The sad thing is that she STILL can't swim while wearing a LIFE PRESERVER, which caused the Principal to give up on teaching her entirely.
* SuperStrength: Not the strongest in the series, but still thousands of times stronger than a normal human. As mentioned above, capable of feats ranging from completely shattering a stone pallisade in one blow, to lifting enormous weights (casually lifting stone lanterns above her head is a favorite of hers,) to causing solid concrete telephone poles to wobble/suffer a fist-sized/deep dent. When angered, appears to [[UnstoppableRage get much stronger]], and has knocked out or [[AmusingInjuries hospitalised Ranma]], [[ATwinkleInTheSky punted Ranma and Happosai several kilometres]], or casually kicked a massive iron ball taller than she is like a normal person would a football.
* {{Tsundere}}: Clearly intended as a "B", especially given Kasumi's description of her in the first volume/episode ("she's really a sweet girl, she's just a violent maniac" in the manga and "she's really a very sweet girl, she's just a little... high spirited" in the anime). However, she [[BaseBreaker can]] come across as an "A", especially early in the series, and it can be a matter of personal opinion whether she gets sufficient CharacterDevelopment to become a "B" or not.
* TheUnfairSex: Among other things, she gets mad at Ranma because Kodachi, Shampoo and Ukyo chase him, even when she knows he's not encouraging them, but has actively gone on dates or otherwise acted in a very familiar fashion around Ryoga, at least twice with the explicit purpose of making Ranma jealous as retribution for thinking that he is on a date with either Shampoo or Ukyo (she has apologised to Ryoga for dragging him into it though). The whole Shinnosuke arc then proved how unwilling she is to explain herself even when Ranma himself is being submissive and apologetic.
* TraumaticHaircut: Her first big character-changing moment is accidentally getting her lovingly-grown long hair sheared off by Ryoga's flying belt-sword, which was sent flying when Ranma unthinkingly kicked it away when Ryoga attacked Ranma due to annoyance about that Ranma focused on Akane rather than their duel.
** In the anime, it was much more Akane's own fault. He was trying to protect her from Ryoga (and being an ass about it, but still), and she pushed him away right as another belt-sword came flying at them.

* AbusiveParents: Frequently considered the worst parent in the series. He hauled Ranma all over the country all of his childhood (causing Ranma to forget he even had a mother), subjected him to harsh martial arts training, is known to have stolen food from Ranma on several occasions, seems incapable of speaking to Ranma without insulting him, forced Ranma to undergo the [[HarmfulToMinors Nekoken training]], made at least two {{Arranged Marriage}}s without telling Ranma until the last moment, and gave Ranma his GenderBender curse because of his own stupidity.
* CallingYourAttacks: Pretty much always a spoof of the trope, such as '''"Crouch of the Wild Tiger"''' being the stance you take when you're groveling for mercy.
** And '''"Carp On A Cutting Board"''' for a stance of total submission. And '''"Howl of the Demon Dog"''' for running away and yelling insults as you retreat. And... let's just say Genma likes this a lot. He plays it more seriously with the [[DangerousForbiddenTechnique Yamasenken]], where shouting to disorientate your enemy is a big part of it, and subverts it with the [[DangerousForbiddenTechnique Umisenken]], which emphasises absolute stealth.
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: Usually too lazy, cowardly or bungling to appear actually skilled, but did train Ranma to his present state; and the combination of Yamasenken, Umisenken, and especially his {{Kaiju}}-sized battle aura, would rationally be more than almost anybody in the series could handle.

* DangerousForbiddenTechnique: The Yamasenken and Umisenken. The first is far too violent for general usage, with attacks explicitly designed to be lethal and including the likes of a fan-hand thrust to the solar plexus and a spine-snapping bearhug. The Umisenken isn't quite so violent, but was designed primarily to counter the Yamasenken. Both of them are also very embarrassing, as they were modelled after different methods of burglary and, strictly speaking, intended to be used to help steal stuff.
* DomesticAbuse: While his treatment of Ranma doesn't ''quite'' fit the trope definition, it's pretty close. In the manga, he's also shown as willing to beat up on Nodoka, doing things like knocking her out cold to steal something worth 20 yen from her and FlippingTheTable at her while [[CallingYourAttacks shouting "Wrath of the Angry Father"]]. Once, after knocking her out and stuffing her in a sack to prevent her from seeing the Ranma vs. Ryu duel, an appalled Soun went so far as asking "What kind of monster are you?"
* FiveFingerDiscount: Genma is a thief and has stolen things (most noticeably Ukyo's family cart). He is even shown to be able to open safes and invented two martial arts style based on differing philosophies of theft. The Yamasenken is based on the brash mugger who smashes through the front door, tears the place apart, and pummels the owner into submission, while the Umisenken is based on the quiet thief who sneaks in, rapidly and stealthily takes everything that isn't nailed down, then vanishes before being seen.
** The item in question being nailed down doesn't seem to stop the Umisenken, as Ranma (while training in the style) ''[[BeyondTheImpossible stole the foundation of the Tendo home]]''. In other words, Genma could probably steal anything that exists, if he felt like it.
* TheGlomp: The horrible secret behind the ultimate technique "Cradle of Hell." ''Come, Ranma, let Daddy hug you lovingly!''
* HeterosexualLifePartners: With Soun in the anime, though it's a rather rocky relationship.

Though he tries to present himself as the stoic, dignified, traditional sort of person, he is really very emotional and frequently prone to fits of dramatics. It's unknown whether the Tendo Dojo is a business dojo or a family dojo. Soun's own job is left unclear in the original manga (the best evidence he even has one is that he once tries to use "going on a business trip" as an excuse when he thought Kasumi was angry, and it's [[AlternativeCharacterInterpretation possible]] that was just a gag and he's actually unemployed), but the anime shows him to be a member of the town council. Even though his source of income isn't very clear, he nevertheless manages to support himself, his three daughters, his three houseguests and the frequent repairs with only occasional bouts of tight finances.

* LandPoor: So how does a martial arts sensei with no job (and no students) afford that big fancy house on a nice-sized plot of land in Nerima, a very urbanized part of Tokyo?
** He is shown to make money from renting out the dojo for social clubs, and regularly taking specialist missions catching criminals. Kasumi is shown to help him with the first, and Akane and Ranma with the second. He may or may not take martial arts students in the manga, though the anime is explicit that he has no regular students currently, but is quite willing to accept them.
** Japanese property ownership laws are incredibly complex and make little sense to Western sensibilities; inheritance laws are even ''worse''. In either case, if you own land in Japan, it's virtually impossible to ''lose'' your property, even to foreclosure — foreclosure DOES happen, but mainly to businesses and not residences, and there's no indication that the Tendo Dojo is mortgaged in any case. As to how Soun could afford the property in the first place? Chances are he ''didn't''. Most likely, it's an inherited estate—especially given its obvious antiquity; it's probably been in the Tendo family since at least the Meiji period.
** A better question would be how can he afford the constant ''repairs'' to the place?

Thus, she mostly stays out of the line of fire and watches the chaos like it's her own personal floorshow, but occasionally she deliberately sets up life-threatening situations -- for her own amusement, or for the opportunity to make a profit.

Given what someone with her manipulative interests, acting skills, quick thinking, and overall [[TheHedonist ruthlessly hedonistic]] personality [[NightmareFuel could do with]] [[PowerPerversionPotential that kind of]] [[GodModeSue arsenal]], it seems odd that she hasn't tried to grab as many items as she can get, as long as they don't seem too dangerous and hard to control. Even in her much less malevolent anime interpretation, setting up a one-woman-modelling agency would probably be a job that she would find extremely cushy. On the other hand, that HandWave is necessary to avoid a GenreShift.

Initially, Ryoga was angry with Ranma for consistently taking his lunch, and not staying for a duel despite knowing about his handicap of always getting lost (Ranma waited three days, Ryoga showed up on the fourth). It's worth noting that the venue was directly behind Ryoga's house. For this, he started to chase him and ended up in China -- then he genuinely started to despise him after Ranma accidentally pushed him into the "Spring of Drowned Piglet". After finding out that Ranma actually ''was'' directly responsible, things briefly got even more heated, but their relationship soon becomes that of romantic and "professional" rivalry along with an annoyance on Ryoga's part for Ranma manipulating and making fun of him. As the series develops, the two gradually work out their differences. Ryoga's curse allows him to masquerade as the pet of Akane Tendo, whom Ryoga swiftly develops a massive crush on. Ryoga has a noble heart and usually means well, but he is also driven almost entirely by his whims and emotions; he can just as easily beat Ranma up as he can save his life.

* DudeWheresMyRespect: He has technically beaten Ranma legitimately around twice as many times as the reverse, but almost nobody notices or cares. This is one of the reasons why Ryoga has suc horrible self-esteem.
* TheEeyore: Sensitive and melancholic... The flipside of course is that his life really ''is'' NightmareFuel level terrible - at least until he meets Akari - and he still [[{{determinator}} perseveres]].

* RomanticRunnerUp: Akane mentions on several occasions that she thinks Ryoga is a much more gentle and reliable than Ranma, seriously considers him when she thinks he is her "destined love" in one shared continuity {{filler}} story, and the two really do have similar personalities, but ultimately he never gets anywhere with her.
* RyuAndKen: Ranma and Ryoga. You can't have one of them without the other. Each feels incomplete without the other to compete against, and Ryoga has even turned sad if he has too much of an advantage over Ranma. Ryoga even has a similar personality to Ryu, and Ranma to Ken.
* SacrificedBasicSkillForAwesomeTraining: Ryoga is just as great a fighter as Ranma is, and, although somewhat slower and less adaptable, most likely also considerably more powerful. But... not only can he lose control his strength when excited, his social skills are infamously terrible. While his utter inability to admit his love for Akane is the most obvious thing, with Ryoga constantly shutting himself down and stating he's "unworthy" of her, it's not the only way he's bad with dealing with people.
* ShipTease: With Ukyo Kuonji, sometimes, but ultimately subjected to ShipSinking in the [[{{Kimodameshi}} Tunnel of Lost Love]] story. They still remain a FanPreferredCouple though, which may be because the anime version of the aforementioned story is less blatant about its sinking and Ryoga ends up saving Ukyo in the second NonSerialMovie (though he has to be bartered into it, as at first he wants to save Akane, and is quite fine with the idea of leaving Ukyo to having an apparently innocent romantic dinner with Sarutoru).
* StalkerWithACrush: [[FridgeLogic If you think about it]], he comes off as a quite subtle version. He's head over heels for a girl who seems to be unaware of his feelings, only thinks of him as a good friend, and is also in an ArrangedMarriage, and thus he is constantly sending her presents, daydreaming about her, trying to ask her out (failing, due to being so very shy), and trying to get her to dump her fiancee. He even pretends to be her pet so he can get close to her, saying that by doing this he can protect her. His antics are ultimately harmless and he is treated as something of an idiot for doing them, but they could be played as creepy and unsettling in a less comedic series.
* SuperSpeed: He's shown as somewhat slower than Ranma (barely able to parry a full speed amaguriken assault by straining himself), somewhat swifter than Mousse (able to avoid all of dangerous weaponry, but taking some time), and effortlessly able to parry all of Genma's strikes while looking in another direction, but does not always use it efficiently (sometimes plows right ahead rather than listen to his reflexes), especially when in a rage.
* SuperStrength: Often assumed to be the physically strongest of the [[FanNickname Nerima Wrecking Crew]]. His feats include throwing an incredibly huge ice boulder across the length of an ice-skating rink with a single arm, accidentally shattering a stone platform wide enough for him and Ranma to spar on it simply by prostrating on it, almost breaking Ranma's ribs with a hug (each form on separate occasions), repeatedly handling female Ranma like a small baby when she pretended to be his sister "Yoiko Hibiki", including a strong implication that he can literally outpower her with a single finger, effortlessly throwing a grappling male Ranma to the ground in the anime, was paired against Lime in a fight, and so onwards.
* TenderTears: Despite his physical strength, Ryoga is very emotional, and can start to cry just for feeling sorry even for Ranma.
* ThereWasADoor: Perfectly willing to just plow through anything in his way when he wants to get somewhere enough.

Soun and Genma got away from him by getting him blind drunk, chaining him in a barrel, throwing it (and a bundle of lit dynamite) into a cave, and then sealing it with a boulder covered by a ZigzagPaperTassel, but he finally managed to free himself and forced himself into Soun's home. He claims to intend to train Ranma as his heir, but has never actually ''done'' any training.

* AbnormalAmmo: In the anime, one late episode is set during the rainy season and the constant damp renders Happosai's favored Happo Fire Burst technique useless. So, he sets to trying to come up with new variants, creating several failures (resulting in explosions of garbage, creepy-crawlies, banners and pigeons/doves) before he comes up with the Happo Mold Burst, which makes his bombs unleash paralyzing, suffocating clouds of mold.
* TheBully: Probably one of the worst characters on this point. His combination of Cologne-level skill and kaiju-sized battle-aura arguably make him the formidable fighter in the series when serious, possibly eclipsing even Saffron. However, despite this, he is more than willing to use his powers to terrorize others into doing his bidding or even for his amusement, most notably once crippling Ranma and then revealing his weakened state to his worst enemies because he explicitly hoped they'd hurt Ranma badly. The only [[EvenEvilHasStandards exemptions]] he has are that he will never deliberately harm children and seems to avoid bothering pretty women who treat him kindly, such as Kasumi.

* FairWeatherMentor: Was very much like this for Soun and Genma; all of their flashbacks/recollections of their training consist of Happosai abusing them and using them as scapegoats for his own misdeeds, rather then actually training them. Could be considered to be doing the same thing to Ranma, even though he claims to actually want to train him.
* FiveFingerDiscount: Besides panties Happosai will and has stolen other items (forced Soun and Genma to help as well).
* {{Jerkass}}: Big time, although ''somewhat'' less than Genma.
** Bigtime YourMileageMayVary; some people think Happosai is an even ''worse'' JerkAss. Genma at least has the excuse that he wasn't exactly trained well to begin with. Happosai just causes havoc [[ForTheEvulz because he loves doing so]].
* {{Kaiju}}: When using his BattleAura to its fullest potential. Even at lower settings, the mere ''projection'' can stun Ranma.
* KillItWithFire: Once he digs it up again, his favorite technique is the Happo Fire Burst, which is basically slinging ridiculously powerful homemade bombs around. While they are invariably NonFatalExplosions, the blast is still powerful enough to render Pantyhose Taro's monster-form unconscious in one hit.
* LargeHam: Foolish mortals! How dare you show such insolence!
* MeaningfulName: The word happousai translates to "chop suey," although this meaning uses a different last character (八宝菜 instead of 八宝斎). The characters in his name roughly translate to "eight treasure purification."
* MiniatureSeniorCitizens: Although it's implied (in the manga; it's explicit in the anime) that he didn't shrink due to age -- he was always small and simply grew old.
* NoSenseOfPersonalSpace: To be precise, he knows what it is, he just couldn't give a damn that women don't ''like'' having an ancient midget groping their breasts and butts.
* OldMaster: One of the two by-far most skilled characters in the series, and likely easily ''the'' most powerful chi-user. Subverted in that he's very easily distracted, seldom serious, and pretty much anyone can defeat him by throwing female lingerie in his path.
* PantyThief: And HOW. The guy ran out on a duel he was on the verge of winning, and which would have had Ranma's female form modelling a bra for him, to go after a Furinkan girl sports team so he could take their gym shorts! He does draw the line at granny-style bloomers, though, even if his life is at stake.
* PetTheDog: In both canons, Happosai has a very strong soft spot for children and will happily play with them or otherwise try and help them if he meets them. However, due to his selfish and twisted nature, he's not above using them for his own gains, such as tricking two kids who believe he is Santa Claus into assisting him on his panty raids, or even "helping" them in ways that ends up causing more harm than good. For example, his usage of Hinako as a weapon against the nurses may have helped her get well, but may have also caused her to turn out... well, the way she is now. And then there's the matter of Natsume and Kurumi, where he gave them the martial arts skills they needed to survive... and told them they were Soun Tendo's daughters and that they should grow up, become strong, and then come and take over the Tendo dojo.
* PokeThePoodle: Most of his crimes are "so silly that it is hard to begrudge him", as Nabiki put it, like filling a random Tendo girl's shoes with tacks or drawing on people's faces (both of the above were because he was angry at Ranma for giving back all of the underwear he had stolen).
* TheScottishTrope: Before he actually broke free from confinement, Soun and Genma were terrified of even mentioning his name on the off chance it might bring him back.
* SealedEvilInACan: Spent an ambiguous amount of time sealed in a cave, possibly since Soun and Genma's youth. They try to box him up and mail him to the North Pole when he's weakened by a "woman-repellant" incense that deprived him of his source of power (groping women) but Ranma thought this was too cruel.
* SoapOperaDisease: At one point in the anime, Happosai takes to his bed and doesn't respond to [[{{Stripperiffic}} any]] stimuli, wasting away to death. He gets better.

As with all of the main teens, a contradictory sort of girl; she genuinely loves Ranma, yet is still willing to try and use mind control in order to win his heart, and while normally bubbly and playful she's quick to make death threats and start tearing up the surroundings. She is generally a friendly, playful girl, but has no qualms about attempting to kill her rivals for Ranma's heart, if she thinks she can get away with it. Outside of Ranma, the closest friend she has is Mousse -- although "close", in this case, is something of a misnomer.

* AccidentalMarriage: Her engagement to Ranma. When they first met, Ranma challenged her to a duel as a way to make up for eating her food -- had Ranma been in male form, or Shampoo otherwise known he was really a man, she would have married him after losing. When she finally met him as a man for the first time, he defeated her by accident (breaking her weapon, its head fell onto hers and knocked her out cold) and so she declared herself married to him.
* AllAmazonsWantHercules: Her village basically encourages female martial artists to wed even more skilled men.
* [[ArrogantKungFuGuy Arrogant Kung-Fu Chick]]: Very proud of her martial arts skills, prone to boasting about the skills and history of her people, and can BACK IT UP.
* BettyAndVeronica: The Betty to Akane's Veronica. Case in point that like Betty, Shampoo is a lot smarter than she looks, is surprisingly multi-skilled, and vies for Ranma's attention.
* {{BFS}}: In her first appearance, wields a surprisingly large dao (a Chinese saber), which is about half as long as she is -- and she hefts it around in one hand as well.
* [[CarFu Bike Fu]]: Almost all of Shampoo's manga appearances are marked by her hitting someone (usually Ranma) with her bike.
* BoobsOfSteel: A lot of fans consider her the bustiest of the girls after Ranma, and she is also one of the most formidable in combat.
* TheBully: She's the girl who most frequently announces her intention to kill, and makes explicit overtures at it, even if she does always call it off before actually hurting somebody or has it interrupted. Most explicitly she indiscriminately kept beating up identical twins Pink (the malevolent) and Link (the benevolent) for years. Pink may have started it by poisoning Shampoo for no reason when they were kids, but Shampoo then beat up Link when the good twin cured her (admittedly, Shampoo mistook her for her sister), and when both sisters jumped Shampoo to try and beat her up in revenge for beating up Link, Shampoo beat them both up and decided to beat them up every time they met from then on.
* CarryABigStick: Her main weapons are chui, basically basketball sized spheres of solid steel on the ends of short staves.
* ChineseGirl: One of the better examples of the "From the LandOfDragons" version.
* DualWield: Because she's so strong, she generally carries her weapons in twos, either twin chui or a chui and a sword.
* GlassCannon: Despite being the most destructive of the female martial artists, can often be taken down with a single attack. Admittedly, [[BalefulPolymorph turning into a harmless kitten when splashed with cold water]] is a pretty blatant weak spot.
* HotAmazon[=/=]NoGuyWantsAnAmazon: Seesaws between these two tropes. On the one hand, she is admired and lusted after as much for her fighting skills as she is for her beauty, with even Ranma noting he thinks she's attractive on a few occasions. On the other hand, she still can't get any romantic interest save for the childhood stalker and all of her efforts to make Ranma look at her the way she wants him to backfire.
* MsFanservice: Perhaps even more worthy of the title then Ranma, given that while she does end up naked less often, she's much more likely to be deliberately trying to be sexy when she is naked. Not to mention lacking the whole potential {{Squick}} factor of being a GenderBender.
** Also, there's [[FetishFuel that high-slit cheongsam she often wears]].
* MurderTheHypotenuse: Greatly overstated in {{Fanon}}; while she doesn't seem to have any qualms about contemplating it, she won't actually try it unless she's got a very, very good chance of being able to get away with it cleanly, and she will easily shrug and let it go if it turns inconvenient or stops being important (Miss Hinako, for example; she's fine with nulling the KissOfDeath and letting Ranma handle her when he brings the subject up).
* NoSenseOfPersonalSpace: No matter what the situation, if she sees Ranma, she'll latch onto him if she can.
* {{Odango}}: Her hairstyle consists of two large "dumplings" of hair at her temples and long hair down to her butt.
* PetTheDog: When Cologne captures Ryoga-in-piglet form at the start of the Bakusai Tenketsu story arc, Shampoo thinks that the pig looks familiar, recognizes it as being Akane's pet, and promptly runs into the kitchen to try and stop Cologne from making it into today's special. Keep in mind, up until the moment when Ryoga leaps naked out of the pot, Shampoo has no idea that this is anything more than an ordinary pig that just happens to be Akane's pet.
* PleasePutSomeClothesOn: Shampoo will usually be completely naked when reverting from cat form.
* PoorCommunicationKills: The whole mess with the KissOfDeath could probably have been avoided if she had been able to warn Ranma that she would be expected to chase and kill "her" if she lost, or if Ranma had told her from the start he was really a guy.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: In the anime, she has deep red eyes. Ironic, given that in this continuity she's portrayed as less of an outright villain than she is in the manga -- though she is still dangerous and amoral.
* TheRedSonja: It's a written-down law of her village that's centuries old.
* ScarilyCompetentTracker: She chased two strangers across China, over the ocean, and into the heart of Japan, while barely speaking their language or the language of the second country. ''And'' she had no idea that her quarry were shape-changers, which meant she could only follow information based on sightings of their alternative forms.
** On the other hand, she was basically chasing down a buxom, foreign, HotBlooded girl (who is often soaking wet) that doesn't speak the local language and a giant Panda that acts like a human and has martial arts skills. One would imagine that they tend to leave an impression, and if their general behavior is anything to go by, Ranma and Genma don't really bother trying to hide their tracks once the immediate danger has passed by (she never actually manages to find Ranma once she starts actively hiding after running into her... even after running into her in an enclosed room while the latter was still recovering from her injuries after the battle against the Golden Pair).
* ShoutOut: Shampoo is generally considered to be a homage to [[UruseiYatsura Lum]] -- the anime was even going to give her green hair and light blue eyes originally, as can be seen in the season one opening credits. For a MythologyGag, she's seen from behind jogging through a scene wearing Lum's trademark outfit in one episode of ''{{InuYasha}}''.
* SuperSpeed: Much slower than Ranma, but considerably swifter than Akane. In their first "match" she was able to dodge Akane's attack, get behind her, and complete her LaserGuidedAmnesia inducing {{Pressure Point}}s attack, all in the span of ''seconds'' ('''five to six''' in the anime, though a much less impressive 56 in the manga). An even more impressive display occurs during the manga's version of the Miss Takeout Race story, which doesn't happen very long afterwards; Cologne throws a barrage of daggers at Shampoo, who is currently serving some customers. Without looking back, Shampoo tosses her order straight up in the air, uses the serving tray to deflect the daggers right back where they came from, pinning the people that Cologne was showing off to harmlessly to the wall, then catches the order back on the tray and resumes serving it. All without spilling anything or seeming even the slightest phased by this. Akane, meanwhile, doesn't get a similar feat until the second-last manga story -- and her version, while still impressive, still isn't quite in the same league.
** The 56 seconds is still pretty damn impressive considering that the pressure point attack in question required ''washing and shampooing Akane's hair'' in that time.
* SuperStrength: In the Super Soba story Shampoo is explicitly shown as stronger than regular Akane, as she topples over her rival after a brief arm-wrestling competition. She also routinely effortlessly plows through wood, concrete and steel as though it was wet cardboard.
* ThereWasADoor: In the manga, almost never uses a door if she can make a dramatic entrance through a solid wall instead. Even in the anime, she's still the one most likely to do this.
* VictoriasSecretCompartment: Has stored items in her chest on more then one occasion.
* WaifFu: A short and slender Chinese girl that can take down mammoth opponents without trying.
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: In the anime, she's usually depicted with dark blue hair with hints of purple; some episodes, and particularly [[{{OAV}} the]] [[NonSerialMovie specials]], go so far as to show her with deep purple hair.

Shampoo's great-grandmother is an ancient grandmaster (grandmistress?) of Chinese martial arts and mystical lore, clocking her age in centuries. Though she initially attempts to strong-arm Ranma into agreeing to honor his AccidentalMarriage to Shampoo, she calms down and mostly sticks to the sidelines after that (which may mean it was actually a test of character). She is a frequent source of advice and aid to Ranma... but she has also helped his enemies once or twice as well, usually as a ploy to force Ranma to become even stronger and thus a better catch for Shampoo.

It should be noted that the animated version directly states her age somewhere in the 300s, but the manga never outright states her age, vaguely placing her over 100.

Shampoo's "stupid friend from childhood", Mousse is head-over-heels for her and chases after her madly in a desperate attempt to win her love, either by kissing her feet or by proving his prowess by defeating the man she wants to marry. Though his relationship with Ranma is much more bitter and hostile then, say, Ryoga's, Mousse does eventually come to something of an understanding with him, and stops actually attempting to kill him -- though not enough to make him stop blaming Ranma for "keeping Shampoo from him". While she doesn't seem to outright hate him, she certainly doesn't seem to have any romantic interest in him, to the extent that even saving her from mind control (giving up a chance to make her his literal love slave in the process) didn't earn him so much as a "thank you," and she had to be tricked into helping save his life.

* BadassLongcoat: For all of THREE panels when he first appears. He can still give this impression when he fights seriously.
* BlindWithoutEm: Played with. On the one hand, he's so bad in his regular life that he can mistake a tanuki statue for Shampoo without them on, even going so far as to ask "her" how and when she got so fat. And he's frankly not much better off even ''when'' wearing them. However, when engaged in serious combat, he can and ''will'' fight very effectively without his glasses, even against opponents that he shouldn't be able to track accurately through sound alone.
* TheBully: Was perfectly willing to join an assault on a weakened Ranma, to ambush and kidnap Akane for the sake of luring Ranma to him, to threaten to afflict Akane with a Jusenkyo curse for added "incentive", to cheat in the name of victory, and to [[LoveMakesYouEvil kill for expediency]]. He also instinctively banged together the heads of the youthenized Ryoga and Ranma when he realised they looked like his rivals, although he immediately felt bad about it afterwards.

* CursedWithAwesome: While at a general disadvantage as a duck, he does gain the ability to fly and he can still use hidden weapons (usually throwing knives in his wings).
* DoggedNiceGuy: To Shampoo. The manga makes it very clear that, when he's not fighting Ranma over her, he's extremely devoted to her and sincerely tries to do right by her, working himself to an early grave if it means taking her out on a happy date... he just has the most ''horrible'' tastes and even worse timing, and [[HypocriticalHumor she doesn't appreciate his persistence]].
* DudeWheresMyRespect: He is much stronger than Shampoo, and she still considers him to rate somewhere between bacteria and pond scum, no matter what he does for her. At least in the manga. In the anime she was actually touched in the second movie.

* HyperspaceArsenal ''and'' ImprobableWeaponUser: Duck potty, yo-yos, cup-and-balls, gauntlets on ropes, multiple swords (the first NonSerialMovie has him create "wings" by sprouting about six or seven broadswords from each sleeve)... the sheer amount of crap he can conceal and actually use relatively effectively, with or without modifications, is truly amazing.
* MadLove: He will stoically suffer through virtually any amount of abuse Shampoo heaps on him, firmly convinced that his dedication and displays of prowess will win her over, no matter that she has stated outright that she hates him and wants him dead.
* MurderTheHypotenuse: During the first half of the series, Mousse made at least four attempts to kill Ranma, so he can have Shampoo for himself. One of them through subterfuge. Although he apparently simply attempts to prove himself stronger in their few confrontations after the Herb arc.
* NerdGlasses: He actually ''prefers'' to be BlindWithoutEm because of how they make him look goofy.
* PaleSkinnedBrunette: In the anime, he is shown with pale skin, black hair and green eyes.
* StalkerWithACrush: Pretty much defines who he is. Although redeems himself by the final arc of the manga, when deciding to set Shampoo free of her enslavement rather than refocus it on himself... and is naturally paid with no appreciation whatsoever (or even noticing that he's there).
* SuperSpeed: Fast enough to be in the same general league as Ranma and Ryoga, but they are shown as able to avoid most of his attacks by exerting themselves. Sometimes considered by {{fanon}} to be the fastest of the three, as he was pitted against Mint, the fastest of the Musk Dynasty warriors.
* SuperStrength: At least around the same level as Ranma, going by the fact that the latter was very impressed after a thoroughly exhausted Mousse split a large iron bell barehanded.
* UnluckyChildhoodFriend: Considers himself to be this to Shampoo. Whether he actually is or not is up for debate, considering Shampoo calls him her "stupid friend from childtime" and all of his flashbacks to that point in their life show her treating him the exact same way she does now (alternatively ignoring and hitting him).
* WaxOnWaxOff: He gained tremendous stamina and strength by going out on dates with "Shampoo" (in reality, a stupendously heavy Jizo statue that had assumed her likeness), thanks to the fact he was going days without rest and constantly hauling around the statue when he wasn't doing his jobs at the Nekohanten.
* YouNoTakeCandle: [[FridgeLogic Oddly]] subverted. Mousse is the same age and just as Chinese as Shampoo, yet he speaks fluent Japanese.

The only recurring villain of the series outside of the main cast, who appears in three stories, Pantyhose Taro was named by Happosai (as if you couldn't guess) and unintentionally baptized by him in the "Spring of Drowned Ox-Riding, Crane & Eel-Carrying, Yeti". As his cursed form is a powerful monster, as opposed to a girl or a small animal, Pantyhose Taro has no problems with his Jusenkyo form (it also helps that he has lived with it from the moment he was born,) but hates Happosai with a vengeance for his name and is dedicated to having him change it... by his village lore, Happosai is the only person in the world who ''can'' do this, so if he can't make the old pervert see sense, he'll live with the name "Pantyhose Taro" for the rest of his life. Between his first and second stories, he somehow manages to use "Spring of Drowned Octopus" water to give his cursed form giant tentacles, and become even stronger.

* ArrogantKungFuGuy: One of the few characters in this series with both the attitude and the skills to back it up.
* BerserkButton: Being called by his name. Before it was revealed, he reacted the same way to Ranma calling him "pantsuto yaro" ("pantyhose bastard") which sounds [[IncrediblyLamePun way too close to his]] [[PunnyName actual name]].
* TheBully: Relishes the power of his cursed form and uses it to beat up and terrify others into submitting to him.
* CombatTentacles: In his second and third appearances.
* CursedWithAwesome: Rare example in that he doesn't actually mind it, as he may not quite be in Ranma's league of pure hand-to-hand-combat without traps and manipulation, and has not demonstrated any special-techniques, giving him a hell of a trump card with some cold water. In fact, when other characters believed his beef with Happosai was this curse, he stated that he didn't mind it at all.
* EmbarrassingFirstName: The prefix of his first name is ''Pantyhose''. Is it any wonder he runs away from girls who ask him what it is?
* GiantFlyer: His cursed form is a mass of solid muscle several stories tall, and yet his wings are appropriately crane-sized. He still pulls off fancy aerial maneuvers and can fly fast enough to travel from deep mainland China all the way to Japan within an afternoon.
* IconicItem: For all his hatred for his first name, he still wears a pair of pantyhose around his waist in lieu of a sash. It was also his calling card when he first appeared in Nerima, wrapping all his victims in pantyhose as a way to taunt the person who named him.
* JerkAss: Even if he does have something of a FreudianExcuse, he's still a real asshole.
* KillItWithWater: Plays around with this trope. Dousing him with hot water reverts him to his weaker human form, making him vulnerable. On the other hand, letting him get splashed with cold water lets him turn into his monster form, at which point he's more than happy to hand out some beatings.
* ManipulativeBastard: One of the few fighters who has successfully manipulated (and outcheated) Ranma during battle, and capable of setting up strategic traps.
* MixAndMatchCritters: Taro's cursed form is apparently constructed with the premise of "what types of creatures would you have to mix to create something more-or-less archetypical demonic-looking?" Answer: You toss a yeti, an ox, an eel and a crane into one Jusenkyo Spring, and get a creature with the frame of a yeti, the head and hooves of an ox, an eel as a tail... and a pair of crane, rather than bat, wings, which is the only odd one out. He is even [[LampshadeHanging referred to as a "demon-lord"]] in [[ZanyScheme the play Ranma set up for Happosai]]. Later he turns into a spoof of a "tentacle-demon" by adding "Spring of Drowned Octopus" to the concoction... with the bonus of shooting blinding ink blasts from his fingers.
* TheNicknamer: While everyone else matters little to him, he specifically singles out Ranma to call him "okama yaro" ("crossdressing bastard," or just "crossdresser" in the English release) and [[BerserkButton annoy him to no end]].
* NighInvulnerable: In monster form.
* OneWingedAngel: His curse form is enormous and powerful --albeit pretty silly-looking-- to the point he carries cold water with him if he's going to fight.

He also utterly failed to keep Ranma from ending up getting the KissOfDeath/[[AccidentalMarriage Kiss of Marriage]] from Shampoo.

He neglects to inform anyone that Jusenkyo ''can'' be drained, just so long as they restore the flow at the source again. And finally, he never says anything about Jusenkyo's level coming back down after it becomes flooded, so everyone goes home and gives up on the cures.
** In the anime, there's an episode where he comes to Nerima because, on this once-a-millenium day, the Tendo Dojo's koi pond can be turned into a Jusenkyo outlet. He naturally fails to warn that if they stuff this up, it can't be performed again for 1000 years, and that something like breaking the rope he surrounds the pond with will cause the ritual to fail and leave them all stuck with their curses.
* YouNoTakeCandle: However, unlike Shampoo, his dub voice doesn't use HulkSpeak (although he comes pretty close).

* PoorCommunicationKills: Takes after her father, so it seems. After Jusenkyo is drained and the cursees are all angsting, she remembers that they could simply reopen the flow at the source. They then call her out on not telling them sooner and sparing them the grief.
* UglyGuyCuteDaughter: The characters just can't believe the Jusenkyo Guide ''has'' a daughter, let alone a cute one.
* WiseBeyondTheirYears: Although her age is never explicitly stated, she looks neither older nor younger than the six year-olds that Ranma and Ryouga once regressed to. She's still far wiser than the teens whose help she seeks (or, indeed, the adults), is incredibly resourceful (managed to get from deep inland China to Japan on her own, while on the run from deadly warriors), and is also quite fearless.

Originally the greatest champion of Furinkan High, until Ranma Saotome arrived. He does remain its greatest pervert, though. A pompous, bombastic scion of a noble house, his father is the principal of Furinkan and this, coupled with his skill, makes him someone of importance in school. Caught up in his own ego and almost delusional obsessions with the samurai, he blatantly lusts after Akane Tendo -- and doesn't lose any interest even when he finds himself also attracted to a mysterious "Pigtailed Girl", making no secret that his ultimate desire/intention is to have them both as his concubines. That neither of them is even attracted to him, never mind happy with the idea, is something that doesn't register.

* BadassNormal: The guy can shatter stone statues with the air pressure from his sword strikes! Basically, he is still superhuman.
* TheBully: Debatable; during the Hiryu Shoten Ha arc, he has no qualms at all about attacking Ranma upon finding flyers that announced Ranma's weakened state, even though he had already confirmed they were true by beating up Ranma earlier that morning. On the other hand, Kuno's ego meant that he assumed the flyers were lying and he had won "fair and square", so he was attacking Ranma to try and prove that Ranma wasn't weak at all. Didn't stop him from continuing to pummel Ranma, or attacking him twice during and after the final battle of the arc, though.
* ButtMonkey: His track record would point in this direction... though oddly, Kuno ''himself'' seems rather [[SelectiveObliviousness oblivious]] to it.
* CantCatchUp: Presumably because he's so arrogant that, given how he frequently "explains" away his loses to Ranma and co, he doesn't believe he ''needs'' to improve his skills. Subverted when he loses his memory and learns a technique that turns him into more than a match for Ranma. The problem is that he can only use it with a visual trigger (watermelons). So, since there usually aren't any around he stays much the same after this incident.
** For extra subversion, the training was never ''intended'' to boost his fighting skills: it was TrainingFromHell so he could become a master of the SmashingWatermelons game. He learned the move to be able to impress girls whenever he went to the beach.
* ChivalrousPervert: Kuno on a good day, the rest of the time he's a HandsomeLech.
* CongruentMemory: See Can't Catch Up. Don't come near him if you're carrying [[BerserkButton watermelons]], unless you want him to turn into human-shaped whirlwind of RazorWind that even Ranma can't defeat. He gets over it by the end of the story arc and it's not mentioned again in the manga, though an anime {{filler}} episode shows he does still have it, and may even have more control over it... Of course, he doesn't think of its combat potential even then; it's a way to impress girls.
* EasyAmnesia: Caused by the watermelon training incident mentioned above.
* FacelessGoons: An identical look-alike to Kuno in an anime {{Filler}} episode delivered the page quote to his group of {{Highly Visible Ninja}}s.
* FriendlyEnemy: Considered a friend of the Tendos (though not a reliable one) in the anime.
* HandsomeLech: Lusts after Akane and "The Pigtailed Girl", including groping them and grabbing them whenever he can, but is actually fairly attractive to other girls, due to being rich, good-looking, aristocratic and capable of speaking/acting in a flowery, poetic fashion. The anime plays this up by having Kuno be willing to try chasing after other women who he notices as attractive, including Ukyo, Nabiki, Azusa Shiratori and Miss Hinako. However, he never gives up on chasing Akane and Ranma's female form while doing so (in fact, the Nabiki episode goes so wrong partially because he declares to the whole school he's going to marry Nabiki and keep his "other loves" as his mistresses) and goes right back to chasing them wholeheartedly after his attempted diversions come to naught.
* HilariouslyAbusiveChildhood: His dad berated him in flashbacks, left him to go to Hawaii, and [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking shaved his head]].
* IronButtMonkey: Kuno takes a lot of abuse and gets hurt easily but he has a high recovery rate most of the time. Lampshaded in the episode "Kuno acting Principal" in which Kuno gets kicked out of a window and instantly pops up two seconds later to Ranma's surprise.
* KidSamurai: An excellent example of the comedic/antagonistic variant. Barely samurai in name only, though...
* LethalJokeCharacter: Compared to Ranma, Ryoga, and Mousse, he's almost a joke. However, he's very deadly against normal humans and can fight evenly against Akane or his sister, who in turn has been able to keep up in free-for-alls against Ukyo and Shampoo.
** Kuno actually has the potential to be ''[[CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass freaking scary]]'' if you consider that he was throwing {{Sword Beam}}s ''long'' before ki was introduced as a viable power-up, meaning that he's making RazorWind projectiles ''[[BadassNormal by sheer muscle power]]''. There's no telling just how terrifying he'd be if he ever got some dedicated training that didn't depend on having watermelons around.
* LordErrorProne: Considers himself a samurai, and technically is one, but is a bumbling fool blinded by his own ego and lechery and considered by most as an arrogant moron.
* TheNicknamer: Even after learning her name, he refers to Ranma as "The pig-tailed girl" (though this could be because he doesn't want to associate her with his hated rival). He also refers to himself as "The Blue Thunder of Furinkan High", even though nobody else does. During his first appearance, it is implied that he has given himself a long string of self-aggrandizing titles and nicknames, of which "The Blue Thunder" is only the most recent (and apparently the last); before Ranma showed up, he had been calling himself "The Shooting Star".
* OvershadowedByAwesome: Once Ranma and his ''real'' rivals, and maybe even his other fiancées, showed up, Tatewaki became a second-string threat.
* ParentalSubstitute: Had to raise Kodachi alone for quite a bit. A whole episode in the anime is centered about his and the Principal fighting out for the right to be at her parent-teacher conference, which is considered as Kuno's CrowningMomentOfAwesome.
* PosterGalleryBedroom: Has dozens, if not hundreds, of photos of Ranma's female form and Akane Tendo scattered around his room, both in dozens of photo albums and as blown up posters on his walls. In the anime, at least, he even as a poster-sized portrait of each girl hanging in the kendo club, in front of his favorite meditation spot.
* SelectiveObliviousness: He has had "the pigtailed girl" change into Ranma ''right in his arms'', and ''back again'', and he comes up with outlandish explanations instead of acknowledging they're the same person.

* SempaiKohai: He always [[strike:insists]] demands that the younger students address him as "Kuno-sempai" ("Upperclassman Kuno" in the English translations).

Obsessed with cutting hair and short haircuts, delighting in making his students hate him and fight against him, Principal Kuno frequently throws his school into chaos to amuse himself.

At least he devoted far more time and effort on fostering Ranma than a normal parent, and made him extremely capable as a consequence. Kocho on the other is both abusive (in a very silly manner, but his children ended up insane), and extremely neglectful to the extent of leaving them alone for years to go and play with ukuleles, coconuts, and Hawaian resort luxuries.
* TheBully: Relishes abusing his power over the students; seems to find their efforts to stop him hilarious. When Ranma is weakened by Happosai, tries to take advantage of it to forcibly cut Ranma's hair at last.

Tatewaki Kuno's younger sister, whose revelation of kinship is only made in her second episode/chapter. The self-proclaimed "Black Rose of St. Hebereke Girls High School", Kodachi Kuno is a master of the fighting style [[MartialArtsAndCrafts "Martial Arts Rhythmic Gymnastics"]] and, while her general skill level may only be about the same as her brother's, she's a ruthlessly pragmatic fighter who is completely willing to use poisons and cheating to overcome her foe. Like her brother, she is unaware that Ranma Saotome is a GenderBender, but in her case that's because she's only seen Ranma transform once, in a situation where the switch could have been a variant of the NinjaLog, and no attempt has been made to explain it to her (unlike her brother). She fell obsessively in love with Ranma after he saved her from falling off of a roof, though he was the one who knocked her off in the first place, and refuses to let his reluctance to be near her and her lack of an official tie to him keep her away.

* BadassNormal: Possibly the weakest martial artist of the lot (but in that case not far behind, as she can hold her own against either Shampoo and Ukyo, her brother, or Akane), but the one you least want to cross.

The last of Ranma's fiancées to appear, Ukyo is the victim of a childhood crush gone horribly wrong. First, she made a ChildhoodMarriagePromise to Ranma that he would end up forgetting about (not that he knew what he was promising at the time -- and then he ended up accidentally sabotaging the promise in the first place), and then, when her father and Genma apparently made an ArrangedMarriage... but then Genma stole her dowry and ran off with it, leaving her behind. Believing Ranma had been in on it, Ukyo swore revenge and began crossdressing as part of an elaborate vow, tracking Ranma down with the intent of making him pay for deceiving her... only to discover it had all been Genma's fault, and Ranma was never even told about the engagement. Between this, the fact she was still in love with him, the fact Ranma evidently found her attractive despite the crossdressing, Ukyo believes she has a legitimate chance at winning Ranma's heart, and calls off her revenge to instead try and woo him to her. Generally the nicest of Ranma's fiancées, but she has her ugly side too and can use threats, destructive ambush-beatings, or manipulation when she feels it's called for. * AcceptableFeminineGoals: As much of an independent businesslady, restaurant owner, powerful martial artist, and successful chef as she is, every last one of her daydreams about the future involve being a devoted homemaker to Ranma, even those where she's the sole breadwinner in the house.
* [[ArrogantKungFuGuy Arrogant Kung-Fu Girl]]: In the anime, she is the latest of several generations of Kuonjis to practice Martial Arts Okonomiyaki, and she is very proud of this fact and her skills. A {{filler}} episode has her get beaten by a master of Martial Arts Crepes and being utterly devastated, even angrily asking if Ranma is insinuating that she shouldn't care so much about martial arts because she's a girl before declaring that she doesn't even deserve to be Ranma's wife if she's that inept a fighter. She then spends the rest of the episode in training for a rematch.
** SubvertedTrope: In the original manga, however, she seems to have made up her style singlehandedly to try and get revenge on Ranma and Genma, and she is here portrayed as being more or less indifferent to her actual skills as a fighter -- a late manga filler arc has her fighting a Martial Arts Takoyaki fighter she beat as a kid, and who has been wearing a goofy mask ever since. Not only does she admit outright that she never expected him to take the terms (whoever lost would wear a goofy mask forever after) seriously, to the point she implies that if she had lost she would have thrown it away once they weren't around each other any more, she is quite happy to lose the fight because it means that he will now take the mask off and leave her alone.
* {{Bifauxnen}}: At first, and debatedly later on in the manga, where she continues to wear her more masculine school uniform and this coupled with the art makes her look more like a boy then the anime does.
* {{Bokukko}}: Despite her tomboyish behaviour, she still has a definite femininity about her.
* BoobsOfSteel: Possibly subverted. She's one of the most formidable females, and a late manga arc has her fighting a battle that isn't much less intense than one of Ranma's customary brawls, while in the anime she's the only fiancée to have a special attack (Batter Dragon, which creates a giant dragon of raw batter that engulfs a foe and then explodes, cooking them into the center of a giant okonomiyaki), but many fans lean towards the opinion she's one of the flattest fiancees, if not ''the'' flattest. This is because of how easily she managed to pretend to be a boy, and the fact she still looks fairly masculine in the manga after her gender is revealed.
* TheBully: In the manga. Perfectly willing to attack those without martial arts skills to prove a point, most notably Nabiki during her stint as Ranma's fiancée and masterminding the attack against Miss Hinako.
* CherylBlossom: Third of the official fiancées to appear, has some good qualities from both the BettyAndVeronica, a valid "third choice"... yep, she's got this written all over her.
* ChildhoodMarriagePromise: Via two convoluted plots, sort of. When they were kids playing together, her dad brought up the idea of Ukyo marrying Ranma to Genma Saotome, who insisted Ranma was already engaged. His resistance to the idea immediately vanished when Mr. Kuonji admitted his cart was Ukyo's dowry. Before that happened, though, she and Ranma stole the recipe for the Kuonji family's secret okonomiyaki sauce and made a batch, promising to let Ranma have the first taste (which is SeriousBusiness even in real life) if he promised that, if it was good, he would "take care of her for the rest of her life", a promise to which Ranma agreed. Unfortunately for her, Ranma still thought she was a boy at the time, and had no idea what she was asking of him to boot. Not that this stopped Genma stealing the cart anyway.
** It's made more complicated by the fact Genma claims that, before he took the cart while abandoning Ukyo, he asked Ranma which he liked better; okonimyaki, or Ukyo. Keep in mind that this is ''Genma'' we're talking about, meaning he may have been lying to shift most of the blame to Ranma. Even if it's true, he not only distracted Ranma beforehand with an okonimyaki, but was asking a little kid the answer to a question he wouldn't have understood even if he had been aware that Ukyo was actually a girl.
* CovertPervert: A mild case. If someone she likes calls her cute, asks her if she likes him, takes the initiative, or such, she easily turns blushing, flustered and ComedicSociopathy awkwardness-whacking prone. - "Oooh I'm so embarrassed!" (Runs away). However, if ''she'' feels like taking the initiative, she can get almost as lecherous as Shampoo - "Move your finger from that photograph! I want to see his **** !"; "Remember when we slept together as kids? Hurry over!" (Drooling); "Hi, I just decided to barge in on you in the bath. Now let your buddy Ucchan scrub your body all over! Don't be shy... hey where are you running off to?" - This, and the constant romantic fantasies, is the reason why almost nobody doubts her raging heterosexuality, despite the cross-dressing.
* DropInCharacter: Almost a case of DemotedToExtra after Konatsu's introduction arc. It gets to the point where she falls as low as Kodachi and Shampoo in [[spoiler:helping destroy the Saotome house without remorse.]]
* ExoticWeaponSupremacy: Spatulas and noodles are pretty deadly in her hands.
* FeminineWomenCanCook: Subverted. She's a tomboy but is every bit as good as Kasumi in the kitchen.
* TheIdiotFromOsaka: Although she's no more of an idiot than the rest of the cast, she does fit numerous Osaka associations.
* ImprobableWeaponUser: Like many other cast members, she uses an over-the-top weapon: a cooking spatula the size of a baker's peel. She has also attacked people with ''noodles''. Then there's the tempura flakes mixed with gunpowder, and the Okonomiyaki batter mixed with glue... or the flour, which is just flour, but good for blinding opponents. Her crowning achievement consisted of heating up a large section of steel flooring in a construction using a blowtorch, and using THAT as a giant-size grill for an okonomiyaki the size of a parachute.
* LoveMakesYouEvil: Mainly in the manga, which makes her much nastier. For example, in one chapter, she joins Kodachi and Shampoo in assaulting Nabiki Tendo after she tries to auction Ranma off to them.
** Big time {{YMMV}}. As seen in Nabiki's entry, this act is often seen as just fair -- if {{Jossed}} -- comeuppance for Nabiki.
* {{Miko}}: Shown to be a part-time miko in one of the late manga stories; she was presumably only there a short time or is a ''very'' casually employed miko, as she never displayed any of the associated spiritual powers.
* NewTransferStudent: She transferred into Furinkan explicitly to track down Ranma.

She does wear the same shirt and slacks as everyone else during spring and summer, though.
* UnluckyChildhoodFriend: Due to Ranma's bond with Akane.
* WholesomeCrossdresser: She dressed up in male clothing as a symbol of the fact Ranma had "ruined her womanhood". Though she continues to dress in a rather masculine fashion after joining the regular cast, she does enjoy wearing feminine clothes when she has the opportunity and is quite emphatically straight.

A creepy, reclusive, unpopular, nerdy sort of boy who has a deep crush on Akane, which she is unaware of, evidently because she was nice to him. Fixated on black magic, but totally inept at it; far more likely to hit his thumb when trying to perform Ushi no Koku Mairi (a Japanese cursing ritual) then make it actually work. He even got himself struck by lightning once in the anime, after apparently managing to call a storm to school successfully. In the manga, he's a pathetic member of Akane's class, ignored by just about everyone, while in the anime he's an equally pathetic transfer student introduced in the sixth season.

* AmateurPhotographer: Takes pictures of Akane whenever he can, in the manga took pictures of Ranma while trying to learn something to use against Ranma (failed since Ranma could sense where he was at all times), and also took one of the photos Kodachi altered in that canon.
* BlackMagic: He wants to master this and use it to get rid of his rivals for Akane's hand, most notably Ranma, but it basically never works. On the other hand, the one time that he actually got his hand on real magic (the control paper dolls), he only used it to mildly embarrass Ranma through a pratfall, so it is very questionable if he is really ruthless, or just doing harmless venting, in the same way many others use fighting games.
* ButtMonkey: Unlucky in basically all his appearances.
* DoggedNiceGuy: To Akane, for a while.
* DesignatedVillain: He's a villain because Ranma and the rest of his class were [[TheBully bullying him]].
* FanNickname: "Voodoo Spike", because he's always running around nailing little handmade dolls to trees and gates and things, which looks like some sort of halfwit attempt at a voodoo ritual.

While the various rituals and spells he performs look a lot like HollywoodVoodoo to Westerners, to the extent that it's the source of his FanNickname, they are actually all 100% authentic Japanese mysticism. The habit of wandering around with lit candles strapped to his head is from Shinto; they're supposed to help him see ghosts and into the spirit world. The little straw fetishes he's always driving nails into are from a cursing ritual called "Ushi no Koku Mairi", which is actually illegal in Japan.
* IneffectualSympatheticVillain : He's a villain because Ranma bullied him.
* LonersAreFreaks: A chicken and egg trope here; is he left alone because he's such a freaky little guy, or is he such a freaky little guy because nobody wants to be his friend?
* LooksLikeCesare: The pallor, tightly drawn skin and circles under his eyes are hereditary; both of his parents are the same.
* NightmareFetishist: Perhaps more so in the anime than in the manga; even beyond his cursing ritual obsession, he's a fanatic for gathering grimoires of black magic (especially those focuses on cursing), thinks that taking a girl to a purportedly haunted graveyard and telling her about various methods of inflicting curses on people you don't like are romantic dates, and his only problem when he realised his girlfriend was a ghost was the fact that if he got serious with her, he'd have to give up on Akane.

* PoweredArmor: In the manga, buys a "Warsuit" that [[ChainedHeat latches onto Ranma's wrist]] to power up. However, this Ranma-level suit was designed with [[PowerLimiter three major limits]] [[FridgeBrilliance to prevent misuse]]: once assembled and worn, it can't even move unless latched onto the primary target; once engaged, the user MUST land a punch on the target within a time limit, or the suit will self-destruct; if the user successfully lands a punch, the suit will deactivate and fall apart. Since its advertised as a weapon against bullies, it's an intelligent method of self-control.
* StalkerWithACrush: Takes photographs of Akane working out during gym class, but in both canons she doesn't really notice him given he's so low-key and subtle compared to the flamboyant and much more vivid Kuno and (somewhat) Ryoga. Sneaking around in her backyard taking photos of her or staking out her jogging route kind of fall into second place compared to attacking her with a sword in front of school every morning while bellowing declarations of love.[[/folder]]

Dropped from the manga by the end of the [[ModeLock Full Body Cat's Tongue]] {{Pressure Point}}s story, but remains a minor fixture of the anime.

** He actually ''did'' stop Ranma's attacks without even trying at the beginning. Had he been around more, he might have shown us more of his abilities.

A sweet, gentle girl who shows up very late into the manga. Heir to the Unryu farm of Sumo Wrestling Pigs, she rides around on her hand-reared Yokozuna Pig, Katsunishiki, seeking a man strong enough to defeat him, the only man she will be allowed to marry. When Ryoga succeeds, she instantly falls in love with him, and he quickly becomes attracted to her in return. A ''very'' minor character, her subsequent appearances pretty much amount to cameos, as she says and does almost nothing that has any major impact on the plot.

* BetaCouple: With Ryoga -- WordOfGod is that, out of the entire LoveDodecahedron, only they are a couple.

[[folder: Konatsu the Kunoichi]]
The son of a loving couple, his mother died at a young age and his father, for reasons unknown, married a grotesquely hideous woman who already had two disgusting daughters, then died himself. Jealous of Konatsu's appearance, his stepmother both raised him as a girl and treated him hideously; despite Konatsu being a prodigy in the arts of ninjitsu, he never managed to kill off his stepfamily (not through lack of trying) and was resolved to being their slave. Until the day Happosai, Soun and Genma wandered into the "Sexy Ninja Teashop" and, horrified by the fact the "sexy ninjas" were his stepfamily, destroyed it, whereupon they sent him for revenge upon Ranma. Konatsu decided he'd rather stay in Nerima, particularly after Ukyo treated him kindly and unintentionally caused him to fall in love with her, and began working at Ucchan's Okonomiyaki after his stepfamily was driven away with the help of Ukyo, Ranma and Akane. Though Ukyo still treats him in a way anyone else would consider ridiculously shabby, it's much more then he had at home and so he's content with it.

The last main cast member to be introduced to the series, and the only one to appear less then Akari, he's a distinctive character who still managed to become quite well-liked by some fans.

Ranma's long-absent mother is a late-comer to the series. Back when Ranma was just a little boy, his father took him away from home, assuaging Nodoka's complaints by vowing he and Ranma would commit {{Seppuku}} if he failed to make Ranma a "man among men". After Ranma's little accident at Jusenkyo, Genma decided it would be best to avoid Nodoka, though she eventually did find out -- fortunately for her son and husband, the precise event had Ranma at some of his best behavior and she decided that the curse wasn't grounds to make Ranma kill himself. Generally a very sweet and motherly sort, but she is just as fixated on honor as her son and husband are (perhaps more so), and she's ''still'' carrying that sword around by the series' end, watching and judging Ranma's behavior...

* AbusiveParents: While played for laughs almost as much as her husband is, she's just as bad, if not worse. Despite the fact that the contract consists of a verbal vow ("I will make Ranma a man among men") and a written seal ("I will commit {{Seppuku}}: Genma, Ranma"), both of which are incredibly vague, she is totally willing to call it in if she ever judges Ranma to somehow be unmanly. She is so fixated on the idea that whenever she visits looking for Ranma, she keeps a sword in constant reach, in preparation for the decapitating strike she will be called on to use in the ceremony. In fact, she seems to have the swordswoman's equivalent of an itchy trigger finger, being quite willing to draw it at the slightest hint that her son is being unmanly (both before and after finally meeting him,) and going all the way to donning the requisite regalia if he does something ''very'' unmanly. She doesn't get many appearances in the series once she moves into the Tendo Dojo, though.
* {{Dojikko}}: Don't stand near her if she draws her sword. Or if she sits on a "DO NOT SIT" water valve.
* TheFettered: Frequently believed to cling so tightly to the contract in order to draw the emotional strength from it she needs to survive being separated from her son and husband for so many years.
* HonorBeforeReason: She will hold Ranma to the contract Genma wrote up come hell or high water, despite the fact it is so vague it is almost impossible to truly determine what would actually fulfill it successfully. She does partially avert the trope when [[spoiler: she declares that Ranma's Nyannniichuan curse does not merit an automatic failure to live up to the contract, due to the sheer heroism of the way he saved her despite exposing it to her in the process]].
* HotMom: Basically looks like a slightly older Ranma-chan.
* IconicItem: The Saotome Family Sword. Wrapped in a bundle, sheathed, or live, it's pretty much glued to her hand.
* KimonoIsTraditional, and Nodoka the YamatoNadeshiko wears some almost at any given time.
* MamaBear: Tries to protect Akane and Ranma with everything she has, if she thinks they're being threatened.
* PerpetualPoverty: Her prior, "'''poor'''" house was demolished and she had to move to another one, and has to recycle martial arts scrolls just to have paper to make envelopes. Ranma says she's the model wife of a '''poor''' martial artist. Even more so after the Fiancee Brigade (Shampoo, Kodachi, and Ukyo) destroyed her house due to a misunderstanding.
* ThePollyanna: Even though her situation would give anyone soul-crushing despair, she's always cheerful and optimistic.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: Allowing for age, the only difference between female Ranma and Nodoka in the anime is hair and eye color. In the manga, there's not even that.
* YamatoNadeshiko: If you ignore the business with the sword, she's the best example of a normal one in the series.[[/folder]]

Early in the anime, the animators either couldn't find a voice actor for Gosunkugi, wanted a role for ShigeruChiba, or decided that the spooky boy was a rather shallow character and/or didn't make much sense as the Kunos lapdog and servant. Instead, they decided to create a new character to take that role, and thus was born Sasuke Sarugakure, whose name means something like "Ninja from the Hidden Monkey Village". This ugly midget {{Ninja}} is most frequently seen at Tatewaki Kuno's side, but he will also serve "Mistress Kodachi" if she needs his assistance as well. Sasuke serves as something of the Jack-of-all-trades manservant to his masters, doing everything from spying on their enemies/love interests, to cooking their food, to cleaning their house, to making shadow puppets to help them sleep, to helping them train or fighting at their side -- it's implied he may have actually been their primary caretaker when they were children. In return, he is [[SarcasmMode rewarded]] with horrific mistreatment. He is forced to sleep outside in all weathers like an animal, fed only leftover scraps (and that infrequently; he once had to live for ten days on a single bowl of brine, and he's forgotten what milk and watermelons taste like), forced to drink the water from the storm gutters, and frequently beaten and berated by his charges.

* ButtMonkey: Even more so than Kuno, as he generally doesn't mean any more harm than needing to serve his master and is fairly amiable if not being compelled by that.

* MyMasterRightOrWrong: He's well aware that his masters are insanely abusive and barely capable of feeding themselves without him, yet stays loyal to them and refuses to leave.
* PunchclockVillain: Has no problem with Ranma or his relationship with Akane.
* {{Ninja}}: A parody or subversion as, in a city full of practitioners of SupernaturalMartialArts, he's a clumsy incompetent with minimal fighting skills and armed with basic ninja tricks. He is, however, incredibly fast (able to go from one end of the school gym to the other, help Akane spring over the leaping horse, and then dart back into the shadows where he started from, all without anybody ''seeing him'') and very skilled at the art of camouflage... though not so good with outright disguise.
* OldRetainer: Not that old, but he has worked for Kuno since he was a child.
* ThereWasADoor: Kuno- "I meant through the door you blithering idiot!" (after Sasuke bursts up through a loose panel in the floor to give a report in person.)

The last of the major characters to be introduced (in the manga -- the anime was cancelled before she was created, so in that canon she was merely the subject of an OAV and appears in a second one, Nightmare Incense of Spring Sleep), Hinako was hired by Principal Kuno ostensibly as a new Homeroom/English teacher for Ranma's classroom, but more likely as yet another of the principal's "attacks" on Ranma for his own amusement. Hinako's story begins many years before the series, when she was a little girl in the hospital for an unidentified ailment. Happosai, wandering by, dropped in and either took pity on her, saw someone he could use to help him steal underwear from the nurses, or both. Flash forward to the present day, and she's all better... but now she's stuck looking like a kid unless she drains somebody's BattleAura, and she'll only remain in her adult form until she uses up the ki she stole. Obsessed with stomping out "delinquency", she frequently clashes with Ranma, particularly after she falls in love with Soun Tendo.

He is the stoic guardian of [[TheLostWoods the legendary forest of Ryugenzawa]], and successor to his grandfather (the janitor of the zoo that previously stood there, and the first guardian of the forest.) Shinnosuke is a kind, introspective boy with a forthright --if often aloof-- demeanor. Having taken over his role from an early age, he once saved a preschool-age Akane from a [[AttackOfThe50FootWhatever giant animal attack]], getting himself mortally wounded in the process. His grandfather, desperate to save his life, used the mystical Water of Life to heal Shinnosuke's injuries... but inadvertently caused Shinnosuke to be fully dependent on the water, and without it, he lapses into a sickly state, then coma, then finally... wait, who were we talking about again?

* AllLoveIsUnrequited: Falls helplessly in love with Akane and wastes no time confessing it to her once he realizes it. This comes a huge emotional blow to her, since he's the first genuinely nice guy to say those words ''and'' leaves it entirely up to her if she wants to reciprocate.
* BadassLongcoat: A janitor's coat, yes, but Shinnosuke makes it look badass.
* [[XOnAStick Brush On A Stick]]: Shinnosuke's WeaponOfChoice is a simple janitor's push-broom, the kind his grandfather used to scrub animal pens at the zoo. And he's ''deadly'' with it.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: He's brave, strong, and smart enough to keep the boundaries of Ryugenzawa safe for animals and people alike, and will face down and attack [[{{Orochi}} a dangerous giant serpent from the mists of Japanese myth]] without hesitation, it's just he... '''forgets'' things. Lots of things. Like his own grandpa. Or the traps he himself set in the forest.
* EasyAmnesia: Shinnosuke suffers from severe memory issues. Long-term is shot to hell (he can't even remember his own grandpa, to the latter's distress and annoyance,) and short-term is basically non-existent. He can basically remember only two things: what his job is, and (by the end) Akane. For the most part, it doesn't really affect his daily life (except to annoy his grandpa,) so his condition is generally {{played for laughs}}: although he ''knows'' he rigged the whole forest with monster traps and deadfalls, [[RunningGag he always forgets where they]] ''[[RunningGag are]]'' and falls right into them. But when he meets people other than his grandfather, his forgetfulness starts affecting his relationships with them, and even endangers his life once (in the manga version, where he attacks the {{Orochi}} with his broom after forgetting it has the Moss of Life already smeared on its bristles.) In his heartbreaking final scene, he watches Akane leave the forest with Ranma and regrets not getting the chance to confess his love for her... even though he ''did''.
* FakingAmnesia: Played with. Since everyone knows how forgetful he is, when a contrite Ranma tries to thank him for saving Akane's life Shinnosuke claims to not know any Akane, seconds before the girl in question shows up and he laments his unrequited love for her internally.
* TheHermit: He and his grandfather are basically this, due to their self-imposed task of keeping the animals of Ryugenzawa from leaving the forest while preventing ordinary people from venturing too deep into it.

* ScarsAreForever: As a child, Shinnosuke received three huge gashes across his back from a giant platypus' claw while trying to save Akane from the animal. By the end of his arc, his grandfather forcefully scrubs the Orochi's moss (which creates the Water of Life) into Shinnosuke's scars, which vanished permanently.
* SecretlyDying: Inverted. Shinnosuke is the only one who doesn't know, and his grandpa goes to huge lengths to keep him unaware of his own condition, ''especially'' the fact that he's slowly dying. When Akane learns about this, she joins the charade to keep Shinnosuke from finding out.
* TheStoic: Since Shinnosuke has been immersed in his work since childhood, with only his grandpa for company, he has very few words and the ones he lets out are often very blunt. When Akane got past that barrier, however, she found him to have a very innocent, earnest outlook towards her and other people.
* YourDaysAreNumbered: The healing effect of the Water of Life on Shinnosuke grows less and less potent as time goes by, requiring him to take more and more of it in increasingly shorter periods. * LegoGenetics: A maternal ancestor was a dragon that had been turned into a human and {{Mode Lock}}ed that way, making him part dragon.
* ModeLock: It's looking for a way to undo this that brings him to Nerima in the first place.

Even going shopping is complicated for them... although mostly due to fawning over the very plain-looking cashier...
* SensitiveGuyAndManlyMan: In a way, with Lime playing the burly, silent type while Mint is more straightforward and excitable.
* SkilledButNaive: They've never been to the outside world, let alone seen real-life women. These fearsome warriors will shrink back into wide-eyed, timid children at the sight of something new.
* SuperStrength: Lime is the strongest person in the entire series, capable of almost knocking Ryoga unconscious with a single punch (and then nearly strangling him to death), although with the advantage of some surprise. That aside, he can catch gigantic boulders falling from the air with just one hand, with as much effort as a normal person would use to catch a ping-pong ball. And by pushing his limits he was able to keep a ravine in a collapsing mountain from closing.
* SuperSpeed: Mint is the swiftest martial artist in the series.
* ThereWasADoor: Walls? Where Lime walks, there ''are'' no walls. Or solid steel vault doors for that matter.

This Indian Hindu girl is the recipient of the most powerful known Jusenkyo spring. Pantyhose Taro accidentally stumbled across Rouge bathing one day. During her resultant punishment of him, he accidentally got her magnetic plasters (for treating her constant backaches) stuck to him, so she chased him after he ran away from her fury. The two of them tore up Nerima until Ranma managed to settle the problems.

* BlessedWithSuck / CursedWithAwesome: The Spring of Drowned [[PhysicalGod Ashura]], of course. Supernatural powers, but it suffers such extreme backache from carrying around ''six arms'' that she can't take its form for long without locking up in pain.
* FlyingBrick: Superhumanly strong, tough, capable of transoceanic flight, insanely accurate, and can generate light, fire, and electricity at will.
* KillItWithFire: She can breathe fire from any of her mouths and creates small bolts of fiery energy from her hands.
* MagicPants: In human form, her vaguely Indian-inspired wardrobe includes transluscent pants under her skirt. Whenever she turns into Asura, the pants mysteriously go away, and they come right back when she reverts. They're the only article of clothing she wears that does this (although her waist-long hair also shortens enough to accommodate the extra three faces, and grows back when normal.)
* MiseryPoker: Oh, woe, she suffers ''so much''. It's all because of that evil, evil man! Won't someone please stand up for her? She seems to genuinely believe it all though, as she is a firm believer in astrology, bad signs, happenstance, and the like. Basically she will help rebuild after wrecking part of the house as Asura, but is apparently completely oblivious to that she caused it in the first place and simply think that it is a sign of bad luck.
* MultiArmedAndDangerous: In Ashura form, she has six arms.
* MultipleHeadCase: Well, more like Multiple Face Case -- she has three faces on one head, though each seems to have its own personality and mind, as they can be knocked out seperately.

This humanoid {{Phoenix}} is the immortal ruler of the Jusendo Bird People. However, although haughty, arrogant, obnoxious, and petty, he nevertheless has sufficient concern for his rural citizens to have provided heat and light for centuries.

On the other hand, he has a storage room full of citizens encased in imprinting eggs, so dissidents apparently get brainwashed, but he will at least not stoop to execute his own subjects for misunderstandings, since he let Koruma and Masala go after they beat him up for being obnoxious.

He also has no concern or patience for anyone not of his tribe, and can be underhanded, sadistic, ruthless, and even manipulative, if they get in his way.

Fortunately, his "curse" allows him to openly and gleefully order chocolate sundaes with a cherry on top in public; heck he even delights in the fact the young and impressionable clerks will sometimes give him free scoops or even free parfaits!!

She gets much more impressive feats of strength, speed, agility and skill in the late part of the series, such as quickly making and accurately throwing a barrage of bamboo projectiles, blocking multiple arrows with a staff, jumping between the heads of the {{Orochi}}, and more importantly [[http://www.anymanga.com/ranma/021/010/014/ successfully defending against]][[http://www.anymanga.com/ranma/021/011/004/ Kuno in a swordfight]] wherein he didn't hold back, due to believing her to be an unknown male. Of the other girls, only Ukyo is explicitly displayed to improve, in an anime episode wherein she undergoes intense training and develops a special attack. Of course, none of the girls are ever nearly a match for Ranma and other fighters around that level, and are all arguably offensively weaker even than Tatewaki. ** There is also the whole "insisting on trying to talk the apparent lesbian into finding a boyfriend" deal in the Tsubasa Kurenai arc. Plus, she seems a bit eager to assume Ranma is willing to rape women if he thinks he can get away with it in the manga.
* SelectiveObliviousness: Mainly in two areas: that Ranma usually ends up in incriminating situations without helping it; and that she shouldn't trust the claims of Shampoo, Kodachi or Ukyo when Ranma is involved.

* TraumaticHaircut: Her first big character changing moment is accidentally getting her lovingly grown long hair sheared short by Ryoga's flying belt-sword, which was sent flying when Ranma unthinkingly kicked it away when Ryoga attacked Ranma due to annoyance about that Ranma focused on Akane rather than their duel.

* ItIsPronouncedTroPAY: Soun's name is not Romanized in a way that easily shows how it should be pronounced. The hirigana spelling is そううん, which is pronounced in English as "soh-oon." "Sō'un," "Sou'un," or "So'un" would be more accurate.
* LandPoor: So how does a martial arts sensei with job (and no students) afford that big fancy house?

** Japanese property ownership laws are incredibly complex and make little sense to Western sensibilities; inheritance laws are even ''worse''. In either case, if you own land in Japan, it's virtually impossible to ''lose'' your property, even to foreclosure--foreclosure DOES happen, but mainly to businesses and not residences, and there's no indication that the Tendou-ke is mortgaged in any case. As to how Soun afforded the property in the first place? He very likely didn't. It's most likely an inherited estate--especially given its antiquity; it's probably been in the Tendo family since at least the Meiji period.

* TheBarnum: See above. If she never heard "another sucker is born every minute", she would have invented the saying herself.

* EnjoKosai: Variation: Nabiki will often accept date offers and invitations from classmates who don't know any better, fleece them for all they're worth during the date and then blackmail them with their own love letters to her. As it is, she's feared by all who have dated her, and she comes out much, much richer from the experience.

** And his crowning achievement: in the final story arc, when given access to a pole weapon that doubled as a single-wheel vehicle, he managed to get from a Chinese mountain range near the Tibet all the way to ''Moscow'' (and back, within the same day.)

** Considering it's [[NoSenseOfDirection Ryoga]], he probably couldn't find the door.

* HotAmazon / NoGuyWantsAnAmazon: Seesaws between these two tropes. On the one hand, she is admired and lusted after as much for her fighting skills as she is for her beauty, with even Ranma noting he thinks she's attractive on a few occasions. On the other hand, she still can't get any romantic interest save for the childhood stalker and all of her efforts to make Ranma look at her the way she wants him to backfire.

* {{Odango}}: Her hairstyle consists of two large "dumplings" of hair at her temples and long hair down to her buttocks.

* RedEyesTakeWarning: In the anime, she has deep red eyes. Ironic, given that in this continuity she's portrayed as less of an outright villain then she is in the manga -- though she is still dangerous and amoral.

* ScarilyCompetentTracker: She chased two strangers across China, over the ocean, and into the depths of Japan, while barely speaking their language or the language of the second country. ''And'' she had no idea that her quarry were shapechangers, which meant she could only follow information based on sightings of their alternative forms.
** On the other hand, she was basically chasing down a buxom, foreign, HotBlooded girl (who is often soaking wet) that doesn't speak the local language and a Panda that acts like a human and has martial arts skills. One would imagine that they tend to leave an impression, and if they're general behavior is anything to go by, Ranma and Genma don't really bother trying to hide their tracks once the immediate danger has passed by (she never actually manages to find Ranma-chan once she start actively hiding after running into her... even after running into her in an enclosed room while the latter was still recovering from her injuries after the battle against the Golden Pair).

* DudeWheresMyRespect: He is much stronger than Shampoo, and she still consider him to rate somewhere between bacteria and pond scum, no matter what he does for her. At least in the manga. In the anime she was actually touched in the second movie.

First, she made a ChildhoodMarriagePromise to Ranma that he would end up forgetting about (not that he knew what he was promising at the time -- and then he ended up accidentally sabotaging the promise in the first place), and then, when her father and Genma's apparently made an ArrangedMarriage... but then Genma stole her dowry and ran off with it, leaving her behind. Believing Ranma had been in on it, Ukyo swore revenge and began crossdressing as part of an elaborate vow, tracking Ranma down with the intent of making him pay for deceiving her... only to discover it had all been Genma's fault, and Ranma was never even told about the engagement. Between this, the fact she was still in love with him, the fact Ranma evidently found her attractive even despite the crossdressing, Ukyo believes she has a legitimate chance at winning Ranma's heart, and calls off her revenge to instead try and woo him to her. Generally the nicest of Ranma's fiancées, but she has her ugly side too and can use threats, destructive ambush-beatings, or manipulation when she feels it's called for. It's worth noting that she is the only fiance who always regrets manipulating the others.

* BoobsOfSteel: Possibly subverted. She's one of the most formidable females, and a late manga arc has her fighting a battle that isn't much less intense than one of Ranma's customary brawls, while in the anime she's the only fiancee to have a special attack (Batter Dragon, which creates a giant dragon of raw batter that engulfs a foe and then explodes, cooking them into the center of a giant okonomiyaki), but many fans lean towards the opinion she's one of the flattest fiancees, if not the flattest. This is because of how easily she managed to pretend to be a boy, and the fact she still looks fairly masculine in the manga after her gender is revealed.

If he had actually met Ranma under neutral circumstances, chances are Ranma would've leapt at the chance to ''help'' him. WhatAnIdiot.

* WeCouldHaveAvoidedAllThis: She immediately accused Pantyhose Taro of stealing her "source of power," never bothered explaining ''what'' it was, and tried to beat it out of him when he was understandably confused.

* WeCouldHaveAvoidedAllThis: If she had just taken the time to explain that she just needed the map to help her master transform and everything would have gone back to normal afterwards, there would have been no need to fight.
