* {{Hypocrite}}: Zeus tears into Poseidon for breaking his oath and calls Percy's birth a crime. Yet he broke the oath first after being the one to force it on his brothers. No one bothers to mention it since he just got his lighting bolt back.

* FatalFlaw: Holding grudges. [[spoiler:Very subtly illustrated in her attitude towards her brother, Nico: she loves him dearly, because she's all he has in the world, but she also resents him because being all he has means she can't do anything for herself.]] And for bonus points, [[spoiler:it's indirectly fatal. When she chose to join the Hunters and leave Nico at Camp Half-Blood, Zoe got the idea that she would be a good choice to groom as the next leader of the Hunters, and drags her along on the quest where she dies. What ends up killing her is guilt: she feels bad for resenting Nico, so she steals a souvenir for him from Hephaestus' junkyard, which activates the automaton defending it. She sacrifices herself to shut it off]].

* NeverFoundTheBody: [[spoiler: Her body is not recovered from the wreck of Talos. Since he got electrocuted, it [[BodyHorror probably wasn't in good shape]].]]

* BerserkButton: Sort of. He never really seems to get angry (except at Polyphemus), but threatening harm to Percy or Annabeth is an excellent way to get him to squish you.

* {{Badass}}: At the end of the first book alone, he's defeated Ares in close quarters combat. Over the series, he becomes even more of a competent fighter.
** BadassAdorable: Moreso in his younger years when he was described as cute more than handsome, but he can act incredibly badass one moment before doing something completely {{Adorkable}}, especially around Annabeth.
** BadassInDistress: Occasionally, such as in ''The Sea of Monsters'' (he gets turned into a guinea pig). Annabeth is usually the one to bail him out.
** BadassLongcoat: Temporarily gains one during ''The Titan's Curse'', when the Nemean Lion skin becomes a duster.

* ImprobableAge: He's been beating ''Gods'' and infamous monsters since he was twelve. Keep in mind that both in-universe and in the original Greco-Roman myths, demigods were (at the very youngest) in their late teens before they did things half as badass.

* {{Badass}}: She killed a [[spoiler:drakon]] to avenge [[spoiler:Silena's death]]. What more needs to be said?
** Who needs armor? She picks up a spear from her fallen comrade, and charges a 200 foot long [[spoiler:drakon]] wearing a t-shirt and jeans.

* CoolHorse: He's Percy's trusty steed, ''and'' he's [[BadAss cool]].

** Convinced Annabeth to open up to her family, as well as except that she can't control everything.

* MeaningfulName: Named after the only Greek hero to get a HappyEnding. It doesn't hurt that he slays Medusa (who's hacked-off head is used to get rid of his mother's husband, a "suitor") and hangs out with a pegasus.

* IGaveMyWord: [[spoiler:The only one of the Big Three to take the vow of no children seriously. Or at least more serious than the other two. Zeus being Zeus will screw [[AnythingThatMoves anything at the drop of a hat]], and Poseidon hinted at having many more children than just Percy (Tyson as a case in point). Hades' last set of children were born in the 1920s and his lover got nuked because of it. He had no children since.]]

* FreudianExcuse: A non-villainous example. The reason he dislikes demigod heroes is because his wife Ariadne were abandoned by the demigod Theseus.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Often comes across as mean and uncaring, but he genuinely cares about the protagonists and comes to their aid in one crucial moment.

* WickedStepmother: Unlike Nico and Thalia, this is averted for him. While Poseidon's wife Amphitrite understandably acts coldly towards him (Percy was born after Poseidon swore to never have another demigod child), she isn't really the jealous type, bakes him cookies, and doesn't get mad if he leaves his clothes on the floor. Percy says that's all you can ask of an immortal stepmom.

Son of Hermes and May Castellan. When he was an infant, his mother tried to become the new host for the Oracle of Delphi. It went horribly wrong. May [[GoMadFromTheRevelation went crazy]] [[MadOracle from visions of her son's eventual future]] and became TheOphelia, and spent Luke's childhood babbling at him about his horrible fate. He ran away and met up with Thalia and Annabeth; they eventually made it to Camp Half-Blood, but not before Thalia [[HeroicSacrifice died]]. Luke went on a failed quest and came back with [[GoodScarsEvilScars a scar]].

* BrokenAce: Too bad his TheAce characteristics hide extreme parental issues and resentment.
* BrokenBird: His hatred of the gods stems from his own bitterness after being basically abandoned by his father his entire life.

* DemonicPossession: [[spoiler:Willingly, if reluctantly, allows Kronos to possess him as the last resort for Kronos's resurrection.]]

* GoodScarsEvilScars: He has a scar over the right side on his face and as the series progresses, his scar becomes more bloody.

* UsedToBeASweetKid : This is evident in his diary.

* ShipTease: Played with rather epically. He is depicted as being shy around Annabeth, which [[UnreliableNarrator Percy]] interprets as him having feelings for her. Come ''[[TheHeroesOfOlympus House of Hades]]'', [[spoiler: we learn that he was actually jealous of her, as his true crush was on Percy Jackson himself]].

* AmazinglyEmbarrassingParents: Only in the beginning of the third book.

* BewareTheNiceOnes: Uses a ''shotgun'' to fend off a monster in ''The Last Olympian''. [[spoiler:This stretches back as far as ''The Lightning Thief'', where it's heavily implied that she used Medusa's head to turn Gabe to stone]].

* HappilyMarried: To Paul, after [[spoiler:getting rid of Gabe]].

* TheDragon: Kronos' right-hand demigod and primary agent.

* AwesomeButImpractical: In the fourth book, he unlocks the power to create his own water: Awesome. He then uses it to create so much water he causes a volcano to erupt: Awesome. Doing this brings him to the point of near death and he has to spend two weeks being magically healed just to be able to stand again: Impractical.

* SinsOfOurFather: Pretty much every problem in his life can be traced to his father. From getting his troublemaker looks that get him branded as a rebel, to having his destiny tied to a prophecy of Doom, to even having his romantic life screwed up because his love interest's mother disapproves of his father. Aside from his powers, the only real benefit of having Poseidon as his father was that allowed him to find a place at Camp Half-Blood.

* YouAreNotReady: It's shown as far back as the ending of book three when he tries to fight Atlas, but when he fights a newly resurrected Kronos, it becomes clear that Percy is now out of his league whenit comes to enemies. So Nico suggests he TookALevelInBadass by [[Spoiler: swiming in the Styx]].

* SweetTooth: His favorite food is "anything blue and sweet", understandable, since his mom used to work at a candy store and brought home lots of free samples.

* BadassInDistress: Occasionally, such as in ''The Sea of Monsters'' (he gets turned into a guinea pig). Annabeth is usually the one to bail him out.

* TheJuggernaut: Took the combined might of most of the major Olympians battling him for weeks and the last minute arrival of Poseidon and his own army to bring him down.

* PerkyGoth: More of a goth-punk mix. She wears her hair short and choppy, dresses in dark colors, and likes GreenDay a lot, but she's a really nice kid once she defrosts.

* BlondGuysAreEvil: [[spoiler:After he joins Kronos.]]

* InformedFlaw: His big fat mouth and [[LeeroyJenkins recklessness]] get him into far more trouble than his hero complex.

* BrawnHilda: She's fat, beefy, has thin, stringy hair, crooked yellow teeth, a noticeable body odor, and (if Percy's "female(ish)" comment in ''The Demigod Files'' is anything to go by) implied to be very mannish-looking.

* FaceOfAThug: She's ''huge'', scarily muscular, and has a rugged, manly face that is heavily scarred and only capable of emoting "evil sneer[s]" and "permanent scowl[s]". She's also [[NiceGirl Silena Beauregard]]'s best friend and nursed [[SatelliteLoveInterest Chris Rodriguez]] back to (physical) health after rescuing him from the Labyrinth.
* [[FatBastard Fat Bitch]]: The first thing Percy notices about her in ''The Lightning Thief'' is that she wears size XXXL shirts, though that weight is eventually replaced with muscle as the books progress.
