* TheLancer: While Zoro and Sanji are more prominent in this category, Usopp has a number of qualities which also mark him as a lancer to Luffy: In concept art, he was originally planned to be in a "Vice-Captain role". In the series proper, he contrasts with Luffy in a number of ways: Usopp fights in a long-ranged style with sniping, while Luffy fights up-close and barehanded. His cowardice and cautiousness make him a clear contrast to Luffy's reckless bravery. At var

* LaserGuidedKarma: Whenever he cowardly retreats from a fight and then calls all of his courage to go back and fight, he always receives a beating, almost as a punishment for his cowardice and boasting. He still manages to win these fights, though.

* PaperThinDisguise: Usopp's "Sogeking" disguise consists of only a mask and a cape, with Usopp's clothes and bandages being clearly visible. Only Luffy and Chopper failed to realize that it was actually him, and his bottom lip can be seen when he exclaims. Although Usopp's initial bounty was attributed to Sogeking, even Kaya and the Usopp Pirates recognized that it was really Usopp.

* TeamNormal: Along with Nami. It's more played in his case though, since he lacks any supernatural abilities or talents [[spoiler: (until he gets Observation Haki)]] and has easily the most mundane backstory. Deconstructed because it causes some self-worth issues and Usopp fears he would be left behind, to the point he decides to leave the crew. Reconstructed once he gets over and rejoins the crew. After the timeskip, he becomes an ever-increasingly BadassNormal.

* {{Irony}}: Despite being the most frequent liar in the crew, Usopp can also be one of the more gullible members besides Luffy and Chopper (respectively the dumbest Straw Hat and the most naive and childish). He believes Vivi's claim that his face had swollen due to frostbite (rather than her slapping him), and falls for Jyabura falsely offering him the key, resulting in him lowering his guard and getting seriously injured.
** Doflamingo once put a 500,000,000 belli bounty on him for breaking his FalseUtopia. After the raid on Onigashima, Usopp gets the same bounty put on him officially by the World Government. Usopp is not pleased to say the least.

* LamarckWasRight: His new badassery (despite being the weakest of the crew) actually makes sense when you consider his pedigree. His dad Yasopp is the sniper of an ''Emperor's'' crew.

** In the Enies Lobby arc, he comes up with a harebrained scheme to throw seastone handcuffs onto Jabra or Lucci, but [[EpicFail misses and accidentally handcuffs Zoro instead]]. Zoro pushes Usopp down to save him from Kaku's ultimate attack, resulting in them getting handcuffed together and causing Usopp to blame Zoro.
** At the end of the Enies Lobby Arc, while Usopp is eager to return, Zoro points out to the crew that Usopp can only return if he accepts responsibility for his actions prior and apologize, especially if Usopp is going to act like the ordeal never happened and deny fault. As the crew sail away Usopp tries to stop them, making one excuse after another rather than admitting fault. Once he sees they are serious about leaving him, Usopp finally apologizes for his actions and is welcomed back in the crew.

* SmokeOut: One of his more common gadgets pre-Timeskip, and at least moderately useful all the way up to the [=CP9=] saga. Strangely enough, his own crewmates are prone to dissing it, with Sanji even claiming it only took [=CP9=] by surprise because of how cliché it is.

* CarryABigStick: The few attacks that don't involve his slingshots are based on his hammers, although most of them are anything but deadly, just large hammers that actually weight a couple of pounds. Although both of them seem to have some sort of psychological effect on the target. The only hammer to physically hurt is his simple hammer.
