* ArmorPiercingQuestion: [[spoiler:In Chapter 864, after failing to kill Sanji the first time thanks to [[BecauseYouWereNiceToMe some unexpected compliments]], Pudding tries again, insisting that her murderous, sadistic self is her "true" personality unlike the sweet girl Sanji had seen, and rants that she has deceived many people before Sanji in the past. Sanji responds by asking Pudding if she happened to be one of those people, which, although it doesn't make her back down right away, noticeably shocks Pudding into hesitating even more]].
* ArrangedMarriage: To the thirty-fifth daughter of the Charlotte family, Pudding. Their wedding is supposed to be the centerpiece of one of Big Mom's tea parties, and the whole situation is courtesy of his father and Big Mom forming a political alliance. He's not too happy about it, though he still ends up love-struck by his beautiful bride to be when he actually sees her ([[ChivalrousPervert as you might expect]]). [[spoiler: Things go even more sour, though, when it turns out that Pudding is actually a BrokenBird with a sadistic streak and the engagement is a sham- the real purpose is to murder him along with his entire family]].

* AssassinOutclassin: [[spoiler: Outclasses ''three'' would-be assassins in the span of a few seconds. First, he causes his [[HoneyTrap fake fiancee]] to have a VillainousBreakdown on the altar right before she tries to shoot him by calling her supposedly horrifying ThirdEye [[FreakyIsCool beautiful]]. Then, after she fails, he [[DodgeTheBullet dodges the priest's point-blank gunshot]] attempt- or at least he would have had the [[ColdSniper cold-sniping]] {{Seer}} Charlotte Katakuri not foreseen this and intervened. Instead, Katakuri tries to kill him by flicking a [[AbnormalAmmo jellybean]] through his [[BoomHeadshot head]] before this can happen... but Sanji dodges ''that'' as well and Katakuri ends up killing the priest instead]].

* BadassBeard: He sports a small beard after the TimeSkip.

* BeingGoodSucks: [[spoiler: No matter how much he hates his family, who are evil warmongers, mock him as a failure and keep his ParentalSubstitute hostage, Sanji can't leave them to their fate to get killed by Big Mom. Sanji doesn't view them as family, but he will try to save them nonetheless, because he is too compassionate to just run away. Thanks to the help of the Straw Hat-Firetank Pirate Alliance, he eventually succeeds in saving his family]].

* BreakHisHeartToSaveHim: [[spoiler:Platonic example; in Chapter 843, he turns down Luffy's attempts to bring him back from Totto Land because his abusive family blackmailed him into marrying Pudding, and if he defied his purpose, his loved ones (especially [[ParentalSubstitute Zeff]]) will be killed. Luffy understandably doesn't take it very well at all, to the point that he gives him a GetAHoldOfYourselfMan to get him to come back to the crew]].

* BrokenTears: [[spoiler: Once, after he beats Luffy up and puts on a JerkassFacade to make the Straw Hats leave Whole Cake Island, which makes Nami ''[[ArmorPiercingSlap slap]]'' him. And once more, when he sees [[BitchInSheepsClothing Pudding]] laughing at how easily she tricked him, how stupid she finds him and how she is looking forward to see his reaction right before she kills him.]]

* ButtMonkey: Aside from Luffy, he's the Straw Hat most likely to be the butt of some joke or run into misfortune; he consistently is beaten up by Nami, rejected by most women, ends up in strange situations, and his quirks and mannerisms are sometimes jokingly mocked by the other Straw Hats when he's not present (aside from [[SitcomArchNemesis Zoro]], [[VitriolicBestBuds who of course]], will do it to his face).

* CainAndAbel: [[spoiler: Sanji clearly has no love for his three quadruplet brothers. It's heavily implied that he fought (and defeated) the youngest, Yonji, as soon as they met up again, with Yonji sporting a disfigured face afterwards. It's later revealed that as a child, Sanji was frequently and viciously bullied by his brothers for being weak and showing compassion towards starving commoners. His older sister, Reiju, who laughed at this in public but showed compassion for him in private, is the only living family member he shows affection for]].
** [[spoiler: Though he hates all of them, he has a particular dislike for Niji, as he specifically notes that only ''Niji'' out of all of them is actually vindictive and petty enough to brutally beat an innocent cook to spite Sanji for defending her. This act practically lowers Niji to a level that's "[[InsultToRocks lower than scum]]" in Sanji's eyes]].

* CallingTheOldManOut: [[spoiler: He calls Judge out ''immediately'' upon seeing him for the first time in at least 13 years since the latter abused him as a child]].

** His [[HairOfGoldHeartOfGold kindness and altruism]] become highlighted and focused on as defining traits of his in the Whole Cake Island Arc, to the point where his sister considers them to be the most prominent and important aspects of his personality. However, if you look at past One Piece, he wasn't quite as altruistic and forgiving in the past. Though all of this is certainly not ''too'' inconsistent with his character, there is the one egregious matter of how he was ready to abandon the innocent kids suffering under Caesar in the Punk Hazard Arc if it weren't for Nami.

* ChefOfIron: Of the 'Ordinary' variety, although he names his attacks after food and cooking methods. He is capable of using cooking utensils as weapons with some proficiency, but prefers not to as they are meant for helping people, not hurting them. He NEVER uses food itself as a weapon, and others doing so is one of his {{Berserk Button}}s, since he considers it wasteful.
* ChekhovsGag: Remember Sanji's pervy face while he goofed off with those mermaids several years back? Well, his new Wanted Poster features that exact moment (down to the ''fish that were in the background''), and it ends up becoming a driving factor in [[spoiler: the reemergence of his family]].
* ChekhovsGun: His new bounty poster, the one with a legitimate picture of him reads [[spoiler:"Alive Only" instead of the typical "Dead or Alive" hinting someone powerful doesn't want him dead]].

* ChivalrousPervert: Sanji is this trope so much so that he refuses to harm a woman even if it would cost him his life. Do ''not'' mistreat women in his vicinity unless you want him to literally explode with rage. Zeff is the reason behind this, literally beating it into his head that he must never harm a lady or he will be a failure as a man.

* DeadlyDodging: [[spoiler: He dodges Katakuri's [[ItMakesSenseInContext jellybean shot]] and it ''[[BoomHeadshot instantly kills the priest behind him instead]]''.]]

* DefectorFromDecadence: [[spoiler:Surprisingly enough, despite a pirate lifestyle being technically more decadent. Not only is he on the receiving end of IHaveNoSon from his completely abhorrent father and is the victim of horrific bullying from almost all of his siblings (except his sister Reiju), but the "family" he absolutely loathes is ''royalty'' with a complete disregard for the commoners and soldiers of their kingdom, and think using said soldiers as meat-shields, even going so far as to win a duel by stabbing at Sanji through one, is '''giving those soldiers an enviable honor.''' Even the worst pirate shown is nowhere near that depraved. Even Kuro didn't think killing his crew was a ''noble and righteous thing.'']]

* DespairEventHorizon: [[spoiler:In Chapter 845, Sanji crosses this when he believes he is truly out of options in getting out of his ArrangedMarriage and going back to his friends, since one misstep meant his loved ones will die. Pudding decides to call off their wedding for his sake, but Sanji persuades her not to and hugs her while calling his bride-to-be his "savior"]].
** [[spoiler: Gets hit with it even harder when Pudding turns out to be a BitchInSheepsClothing, as he loses the one ray of hope he had left in this situation. Though when he calls her much-hated ThirdEye "beautiful", he sends her into a tearful VillainousBreakdown and leaves her unable to kill him.]]

* DoesNotLikeSpam: According to [[WordOfGod Oda]], he hates the [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Konjac konjac root]] as it is not nutritious to him.

* FlashStep: One of the skills he obtained during his stay on Momoiro Island.
* FlowerMotifs: According to Yuriko Yamaguchi (Robin's voice actress), Sanji's flower is the delphinium, which represents passionate attachment and a huge heart. He is an utter romantic who go's heart-eyed at the sight of beautiful women, and an utterly NiceGuy underneath his [[{{Jerkass}} abrasiveness]]. Ironically, because of the delphinium's toxicity, it means death - he's a SpannerInTheWorks who "kills" villainous plans, and an utter failure when it comes to successfully seducing and forming long-term relationships with women. [[spoiler:It could also reference Sanji's birth family of royal assassins; how his father, Judge, tried "killing" the notion of compassion and empathy by psychologically/physically altering his children; how Sanji's mother, Sora, died trying to save him and his quadruplet brothers from being turned into utterly emotionless weapons; and/or how Sanji nearly starved to death ''twice'', the first time being left to die in the dungeons by Judge just because he was born a "dud" unlike his enhanced siblings]].

* ForWantOfANail: [[spoiler:Sanji not becoming an utterly remorseless {{Tykebomb}} like his quadruplet brothers hinged on his mother's kindness. Had Sora not made the choice to sacrifice herself to save her sons after Judge experimented on them in utero, Sanji wouldn't grow up to be a SpannerInTheworks and a major problem for villains. And more specifically, the entire Vinsmoke line would be rendered extinct by the Charlotte family/Big Mom Pirates, because Sanji didn't make the necessary friends and allies in order to save them. He wouldn't be able to make [[BitchInSheepsClothing Pudding]] reveal her BrokenBird side and perform a HeelFaceTurn, because that relied on ''kindness alone''.]]
* FourIsDeath: [[PlayingWithTropes Played with.]] [[spoiler:He's biologically the fourth child of the Vinsmokes, with his sister Reiju, and his elder quadruplet brothers Ichiji and Niji preceding him, in that order. He's also on the outs with his family so bad that his father faked Sanji's death in an attempt to throw away a "dud" and start over with a clean slate.]]
* FreakyIsCool: [[spoiler: Sanji genuinely finds his [[HoneyTrap "fiancee"]] Charlotte Pudding's ThirdEye beautiful and tells her so on the altar even though he knows she's trying to kill him. Pudding - having been called an ugly freak by others her whole life and [[FreakinessShame never hearing such a thing before]]- has a VillainousBreakdown at this display of immense kindness and can't go through with killing him. Furthermore, she actually ''falls madly in love with him'' not too long afterwards, perhaps being the first woman to love Sanji back in a romantic sense.]]

* GoodIsNotNice: {{Downplayed|Trope}}. Possibly as the result of being raised by an entire crew of rowdy [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold jerk chefs with hearts of gold]] at Baratie, he tends to be one of the meaner or ruder crew members towards the locals the Straw Hats meet (the men only of course) or prioritize the safety of the crew over ''all'' else. He does have his heart of gold, but he does have his meaner moments. One good example would be how he was ready to abandon the kids suffering under Caesar (Granted, because he thought taking them along was too reckless) if not for Nami changing his mind.

** An InUniverse example. [[spoiler: Nearly starving to death on an island at 10 years old is bad enough by itself, but the real tragedy is that this happened after Sanji had already fled from the same fate once; that is, having been left to waste away in a dungeon by his own father at only 8 years old. It's lucky, though, that Zeff's kindness gave him a chance to survive]].
** His chain-smoking habit seems to be a coping mechanism to deal with all the shit he went through as a little kid [[spoiler:including being subjected to horrific abuse by his birth family and nearly starving to death in the family doungeons for the first time]].
* HatedHometown: He ''despises'' the Germa Kingdom, which resides in the North Blue. It's not hard to see why, given its the place where his father and brothers abused him during his childhood. [[spoiler:It actually factors into Reiju's decision to secretly help Sanji escape to the East Blue in hopes of finding a better life there]].
* HeroicBSOD: [[spoiler: He shuts down emotionally about halfway through the Totto Land arc upon realizing that there's essentially no way out of the situation, first deciding to forget about his aspirations with the crew to marry Pudding and then, after finding out she's no good, deciding to just let himself be killed. Thankfully, Luffy snaps him out of it with a good [[GetAHoldOfYourselfMan whack to the face]], eventually]].

* HeroicSacrifice: Sanji tries to pull one after Zoro offers his life for Luffy's to Kuma. "Tries" being the operative word because Zoro knocks him out before he can go through it.
** [[spoiler: He does another one when he sacrifices himself to save Nami, Chopper, and Brook from Capone Bege]].

** He won't hit a girl, even to save his own life or anyone else's. Nami [[LampshadeHanging lampshades]] how stupid this is on a practical sense, despite being an admirable trait, given Sanji lives in a WorldOfBadass where {{Action Girl}}s can be found on every island. Indeed, he's nearly been killed by several women because of it. There are several reasons why he follows this belief, some based on simple perversion, but the main reason: it's to honor Zeff, who believes that a man should never, ''ever'' hit a woman. And who literally beat that belief into Sanji, including threatening to castrate him if he ever heard Sanji had hit a girl.
* HopelessSuitor: He seemed like this back when Nami was the only girl around he could try to woo most of the time. This changed once other ladies joined the crew and it became more and more apparent he'd hit on anything with shapely hips and a nice rack (though given ''this'' series, those two criteria apply to about 95% of the post-pubescent girls the Straw Hats encounter). Nami is still the primary source of his attention, but by no means the only one.

** However, things get better later on: [[spoiler: Pudding ''actually'' falls in love with him, and furthermore, becomes and invaluable asset in helping the Straw Hats escape from Whole Cake island.]]
* HotBlooded: Usually when the ladies are in danger, he gets so HotBlooded that he actually [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-PGMyg5hY04 bursts into flames]] for comedic effect. It's also the author's explanation for him being able to pull off Diable Jambe, breaking the laws of physics in the process. ItRunsOnNonsensoleum indeed.

* ImAHumanitarian: He once threatened Absalom by saying he'd ''cook'' him, saying that given how many animals are part of him, he'd make "decent mince-meat". (He was ''probably'' bluffing, but given how much the two hate each other, it's hard to tell.)

* IronicHell: Blasted to an island of drag queens at the end of Sabaody and forced to join in. Kuma must have a twisted sense of humor...

* JerkassFacade: [[spoiler: Since he's being blackmailed by his family and Big Mom, he puts one on in order to get Luffy and Nami to forget about him and move on when they come to rescue him. He takes it ''really'' far too, cruelly insulting his friends nonstop and then brutally beating Luffy until he knocks him out. It actually works on Nami, who angrily disowns him, but Luffy sees right through it and makes him cry when he ''still'' refuses to turn his back on him]].

* KingIncognito: Sanji is revealed to be [[spoiler:the third son of the Vinsmokes, a royal Underworld family of assassins]]. What this means will be further investigated, as [[WordOfGod Oda stated]] that post-Dressrosa arc will focus a bit more on Sanji.
** To elaborate; [[spoiler: Sanji is actually ''a really, really big deal''. Not only is he rightfully a prince, but he hails from a family that has enough political pull to attend the Reverie, is feared worldwide for their brutality, can manipulate HQ Marines to do their bidding, has an Emperor interested in their services, and once ruled over the ''entire'' North Blue in the past -- effectively meaning the Vinsmokes are only a step or two below the World Nobles when it comes to power. And he gave it all up. His sister Reiju scoffs at him for choosing the "poor" life as a pirate over a prince, though he's unmoved by her criticism and she probably didn't mean it.]]
* KissingDiscretionShot: [[spoiler: Though it happens just off-screen from the audiences' point of view, Charlotte Pudding tearfully kisses Sanji goodbye right before he prepares to leave Whole Cake Island. Unfortunately, however, she uses [[LaserGuidedAmnesia her powers]] to erase his memory of the kiss immediately after it happens]].

* LikeFatherUnlikeSon: He's the complete opposite of his JerkAss [[TheSocialDarwinist father]] in every way, despite having [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold his own flaws]].

* ManIFeelLikeAWoman: When Law puts his heart in [[spoiler:Nami's body, Sanji can't resist the urge to peep at or feel him/herself up.]]

* MusclesAreMeaningless: His torso became fairly well built after the time-skip, developing more defined abs than he previously had; but his overall physique remains very slim, with his limbs actually being just about as skinny as Nami's limbs. But, regardless, he can still send men twice his size and muscular-build flying with a single kick and launch giant monsters into the air like nothing. Interestingly, while other characters frequently [[LampshadeHanging notice Luffy's oddly powerful muscles]], nobody seems to call Sanji out on this one.
* MysteriousPast: For years, the story never actually directed attention to Sanji's past before the Cook Pirates incident. All that was known is that he was born in the North Blue and worked on a cruise liner (all the way in the East Blue) at age 10. [[spoiler: Eventually, it's finally revealed that he is the third son of the Vinsmoke family, an Underworld group of royal assassins who are also commanders of the evil army Germa 66 and former rulers of the ''entirety'' of the North Blue]].
* NeckLift: In his first appearance, he does this to Fullbody after having first beat the ''absolute shit'' out of him, the cause of which being Fullbody showing disrespect towards and ''wasting'' food. This establishes Sanji as being a highly-principled and undeniably badass but ''very'' hot-tempered person who holds the highest degree of respect for food and whose biggest pet peeve is the wasting of such. This also serves to establish that Sanji's outer persona belies the true nature of his more intricate, complex character.

* ReallyRoyaltyReveal: [[spoiler: He's the third son of the Vinsmoke family, who are not only North Blue royalty, but a family of underworld ''assassins'', making him a [[MafiaPrincess Mafia Prince]] of sorts.]]
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: [[spoiler:Gives one to his entire family after they admonish him for defending a lowly cook, calling them out on their appalling behavior as royals (though it was more directed at his father and brothers than his sister, who was also in the same room as them). Judge's response is to blackmail Sanji into obedience by threatening the lives of the Baratie cooks, especially [[ParentalSubstitute Zeff]]]].

* SensitiveGuyAndManlyMan: The Manly Man to Usopp's Sensitive Guy whenever they get scenes together.[[spoiler: However, it might come as a surprise to know he had this dynamic in childhood with his brothers as the Sensitive Guy- and they bullied him mercilessly for it. Even in present day, he comes off as this when contrasted to their complete LackOfEmpathy and callousness]].

** [[spoiler: All of his older and younger siblings share his [[HandsomeLech perverted tendencies]] (his quadruplet brothers ogle [[MsFanservice Nami]] whenever they see her, while it's gender-inverted with Sanji's sister Reiju who enjoyed giving a KissOfLife to Luffy a little ''too'' much).]]

* SiblingYinYang: [[spoiler:Yonji is a pervert like Sanji, but he lacks his chivalry. Ichiji has Sanji's cool head, but he has a LackOfEmpathy, with a tendency to KickTheDog with [[DeadpanSnarker scathing remarks]]. But Niji, out of all his siblings, contrasts Sanji the most - aside from having an explosive temper, Niji is spoiled, ungrateful, unappreciative towards food, and has none of Sanji's compassion towards commoners and women]].

* SpannerInTheWorks: ''VERY'' frequently. His unknown at the time identity allowed him to rescue the crew from Crocodile's death trap in Alabasta, he trashed Eneru's airship long enough for Luffy to get back into the fight (and stop him from putting all his focus into destroying Skypiea), and his closing the Gates of Justice not only allowed them to escape Enies Lobby without being pursued, but significantly slowed down the pursuing marines during the chase itself.

* SpiderSense: One of the many people who've awakened the Observation Haki, which works like spider sense. [[WordOfGod Eiichiro Oda]] claims that he specializes in this type of Haki.

* {{Tykebomb}}: [[spoiler: {{Subverted|Trope}}. He and his siblings were genetically enhanced after birth and raised to be physically superior to the average human in order to lead the Germa 66's armies to their greatest victories. However, in Sanji's case, the modifications failed thanks to the drug his mother took in a desperate attempt to save him and his brothers, but the drug only worked on him for some reason. As a result, he didn't grow any stronger than your average human child]].

** Push comes to shove [[spoiler: when his rich birth family returns to take him back, and they try wooing him with promises of [[SexSlave "personal maidens"]], money, and marriage to the beautiful Charlotte Pudding. Sanji, against even his crew's expectations, refuses it all and stays absolutely set on leaving with Luffy and all of his friends.]]

** [[spoiler: Sanji's WhiteSheep status is also reflected in his alias compared to those of his siblings. The Vinsmokes' Germa titles are written in katakana, and all designate their choice of weapon followed by their personal color (Poison Pink, Sparking Red, Electric Blue, and Winch Green); Sanji's pirate name "Black Leg" is the reverse of the Germa naming scheme, written in kanji like the rest of the Straw Hat monikers, and also a nod to his adoptive father and mentor - "Red Leg" Zeff.]]

A rather boastful seventeen/[[TimeSkip nineteen]] year-old who likes to tell tall tales, Usopp serves as the crew's sharpshooter, and previously served as the (barely competent) repairman for the ''Going Merry''. He's the son of Yasopp, a sharpshooter serving under Shanks, and comes from the East Blue. He becomes the third of Luffy's recruits after the latter protects Syrup Village from Kuro. At first a cowardly liar with self-esteem issues, Usopp grows to be a dependable part of the crew. He specializes in the use of a slingshot, called the Galaxy Slingshot (''Ginga Pachinko''), which he replaced with the Kabuto and later the Black Kabuto. These slingshot, coupled with his talent in tricking enemies, and his absurd sniping skills, make him a redoubtable sniper able to intervene at a ''very'' long range.

His dream is to better himself and become a brave warrior of the seas, and while he's now quite brave, the challenges he faces have grown accordingly, meaning he usually keeps his usual attitude. According to Oda, he is the physically-weakest member of the crew, and his worries about [[CantCatchUp not being able to keep up]] with the stronger members, with the resulting inner turmoil from that, put him at odds with Luffy during one story arc, and ultimately resulted in the creation of an alter ego dubbed Sogeking (a pun on "Sogeki" (Sniping) and "King", "Sniper King" in the English versions) which he uses to draw on his inner strength and courage.

Sanji is the crew's [[SmokingIsCool chain-smoking]], nineteen/[[TimeSkip twenty-one]]-year-old chef. [[ChefOfIron There is not a dish he cannot cook]], [[HandsomeLech a pretty girl he will not try to]] [[ChivalrousPervert woo]], [[VolleyingInsults or something he will not argue with Zoro over]]. As a chef, he believes that he cannot afford to harm his hands, and so uses a fighting style which uses [[ExtremityExtremist only his feet]] called the "Black Leg Style" (''Kuroashi no Waza''). He and Zoro argue and fight so regularly that it almost borders on FoeYay.

His dream is to find a legendary patch of sea called All Blue, where one can find species of fish from all over the world. His mentor, former-pirate-turned-restaurant-owner Zeff, is one he shares his dreams with, and Sanji worked under him as a way to pay Zeff back for saving his life when the two were stuck on a rock with barely any food when Sanji was a child.

Sanji has also shown some ButtMonkey tendencies lately, as he's become the butt of an ever-increasing list of jokes, including a ugly, poorly drawn bounty poster that no one has any trouble identifying him with, a man who ''resembles'' said bounty poster coming for revenge, and most recently, Kuma blasting him to an island filled with, of all things, drag queens, leading him to declare that [[IronicHell he is in Hell]]. While there, he learns of a special recipe to make the consumer stronger and trains with the 99 Newkama Kenpo masters.

His first bounty was 77,000,000 Berries. He was, however, frequently unrecognized since his old wanted poster was a poorly-drawn composite sketch. His second bounty was 177,000,000 berries, and he finally gained an actual picture for his poster (albeit a goofy take of him with his typical "heart" eyes). Oddly, he is wanted alive, unlike the other Straw Hats and every other known criminal (who are all "dead or alive"). His current bounty is 330,000,000 berries, and with his family matters resolved, he is once again wanted dead or alive. However, to his extreme frustration, he is now officially recognized by the government as "Vinsmoke" Sanji.
