* ArtisticLicenseFirearms: At the climax of the Dressrosa arc an enraged Doflamingo frantically shoots Law multiple times as if he was using a semi-automatic firearm. However, he's using a flintlock pistol which in real life could only be fired once before the user had to reload them.

** He's likewise one to Luffy himself. Both of them dedicated themselves to being King of the Pirates at a young age and surrounded themselves with a crew who became as a found family to them. There's even a parity in their Devil Fruits, with the Gum-Gum fruit's stretching being not dissimilar to the Ito-Ito's long string powers. Both men also possess Conqueror's Haki. But while Luffy is a liberator of humble origin in East Blue, Doflamingo is a tyrant-king from the Celestial Dragons who spitefully oppresses everyone he sees as beneath him. Both oppose the Celestial Dragons, but Luffy's hate is borne of moral revulsion while Doflamingo simply loathes them for denying him his return and "birthright." Doflamingo still fancies himself something of a God, while Luffy is a D whom the Celestial Dragons recognize as the "Enemies of Gods" in Mary Geoise. And while Luffy treasures his crew and would gladly give his all or even die for them, Doflamingo's love for his subordinates is shallow and self-serving and only exists as long as Doflamingo's desires don't conflict with their survival. While Luffy repeatedly refuses to abandon a single crewmember, Doflamingo will kill his entire "family" while bragging he'll just find a new one later.

* {{Irony}}: For all his grievances of being robbed of a life as a Celestial Dragon, being ousted from Mariejois in the end resulted in a better life for him. He would not have become as powerful or as infamous as he became, and he would not have found the TrueCompanions that he gathered during his life of piracy.

** Forcing Bellamy to kill Luffy to regain his favor (after Bellamy and Luffy had developed a great deal of mutual respect for one another), beating the shit out of him, insulting him to piss off Luffy, and then using him as a ''HumanShield'' when Luffy flies into a rage.

* StatusQuoIsGod: This is discussed and defied multiple times in his speeches, claiming a big war will shake and change the world. Of course, Doflamingo himself isn't a fan of this trope because [[spoiler: of his past as former celestial dragon, that causes him to hate the current status and balance of the world and want to destroy it]].

* WrittenByTheWinners: Strongly believes that whoever wins decides what is right or wrong, as shown by his speech during the Marineford War. [[spoiler:Which becomes incredibly unsurprising once is revealed that he's a descendant of the "winners."]]

* ItsAllAboutMe: [[spoiler:The World Nobles won't give ME back MY title because of my father leaving it all behind? WELL IF I CAN'T HAVE IT, THEN SCREW THEIR WORLD!]]

* MoralityPet: Played with and averted. While Doffy might seem like he loved his mother, his brother, and his crew, as a true sociopath he isn't capable of seeing them as people as opposed to extensions of himself and his wishes. While at times he seems to hesitate, when the time comes, Doffy will choose his own desires over their wellbeing and never shows an ounce of regret for those he tosses aside.

* TheSociopath: [[TheChessmaster Manipulative like you wouldn't believe]], [[ItsAllAboutMe extraordinarily selfish]], possessing a complete LackOfEmpathy, and [[AxCrazy a violent sadist to boot.]] Even when he was young, his behaviour (which included asking his dad for a gun to kill someone ''[[DisproportionateRetribution over a petty argument]]'') raised some serious red flags about his twisted mind and what he would go on to become and do. Ultimately Doflamingo is incapable of seeing others as distinct beings apart from himself. Everyone exists to service his wants and desires, even his supposedly precious family, who he will sacrifice without hesitation while claiming he'll find a new one.

* WakeUpCallBoss: Doflamingo is much stronger compared to anyone Luffy has fought so far in the New World, forcing him to actually bring out his brand new technique, Gear Fourth, for the first time in order to win against him. Even after that, Doflamingo quickly discovers how Luffy's new form works and is able to fight him evenly, boiling down to a clash of their ultimate attacks that Doffy ultimately loses. Even after defeating him, Luffy stays unconscious for days.

* TheWorfBarrage: When Luffy activates Gear Four for the first time, Doflamingo tries to use ''Athlete's Thread'' on him, an attack that previously sent Gear Second Luffy flying away as well as cutting him. Against Gear Four? It just harmlessly bounces right off Luffy's body. [[OhCrap Much to his shock]].

* WouldHurtAChild: While it's unknown whether or not he would do this personally, but he did facilitate the kidnapping of many children for Caesar Clown's experiments, and then had Vergo cover them up. Also indirectly, [[spoiler:children were among the casualties during his takeover of Dressrosa, and he was the one directly controlling King Riku's soldiers when they were being forced to slaughter civilians]].
* WrittenByTheWinners: Strongly believes in this, as shown by his speech during the Marineford War. [[spoiler:Which becomes incredibly unsurprising once you learn that he's a descendant of the "winners."]]

* BigBadWannabe: Doffy has it in him that he will be the Pirate King and rule the seas, in addition to the belief he is the ultimate power of the world. To his credit, he is a major player but he massively overestimates just how high his pull and powers really go. He's far outclassed by other Warlords, let alone the Four Emperors, and his final appearance to date features him raving impotently while locked in Impel Down

* EvilPowerVacuum: [[spoiler: Per his statement, his defeat would incite a power struggle among the pirates, Marines, and Revolutionary Army to control the New World. Doflamingo, who had the most authority and influence in the black market underworld, bore the brunt of his downfall. This loss impacted all his business dealings, and the Revolutionaries emerged victorious in several wars against kingdoms that purchased weapons from him. Furthermore, the pirates who depended on him to acquire weapons and Devil Fruits were stranded without any means of recovering their goods or money. Among them, the most significant buyer was Kaido, one of the Four Emperors, who regularly purchased substantial quantities of Artificial Devil Fruits called {{SMILE}}s from Doflamingo to bolster his troops. While being taken to Impel Down, Doflamingo acknowledged that he kept all the "monsters" in check and that his absence would soon trigger the greatest war for supremacy of the sea. Only time will tell if his prophecy comes to fruition.]]

* EvilPowerVacuum: [[spoiler: Claims that with his defeat there will be a power struggle for control over the New World between the pirates, Marines, and Revolutionary Army. Time will tell if he's right.]]

* GenreBlind: He falls into a common pitfall of Shonen villains and heroes alike; he simply allows Luffy to transform into his SuperMode without any interference due to underestimating him and it consequently costs him the fight.

** In some way, [[Characters/OnePieceUsopp Usopp]]. Both characters revolve around lies, one for bettering one's image, and another to manipulate people. Doflamingo is the textbook definition of a narcisist, and Usopp does not think of himself that way. Despite never encountering each other directly, Usopp is the one of the few people in the world to make Doflamingo [[RageBreakingPoint drop his smile in legitamate anger]], being responsible for [[spoiler:knocking out Sugar]]. And to put the simularities between the two more apperent, Doflamingo pins Usopp the highest bounty between his enemies because he angered him the most.

[[spoiler:Sanji did it willingly because his relatives are criminal assassins and because said relatives (save for [[TokenGoodTeammate his older sister Reiju]] and his [[MissingMom deceased mother]]) were abusive assholes. Meanwhile, Doffy had to discard his title as a World Noble because his father wanted him to learn how to live among the commoners their neighbors so often mistreated, which Doffy never quite got over even as an adult and has been trying to be accepted back into Mariejois ever since]].

Meanwhile, Doffy's kindness, charisma, and father-like treatment of his [[DysfunctionJunction pirate crew]] hides the insane, [[ItsAllAboutMe entitled]], [[{{Sadist}} sadistic]], [[{{Narcissist}} prideful]] scumbag who psychologically manipulates his "family" into serving as his tools and won't hesitate to discard them when it's convenient. It's even reflected in their powers: Sanji's [[PlayingWithFire use of fire]] can also feed and help his crewmates, while Doffy's seemingly harmless strings are used as tools of manipulation and murder.

The third of the [[Characters/OnePieceSevenWarlordsOfTheSea Seven Warlords]] to be formally introduced, captain of the [[Characters/OnePieceDonquixotePirates Donquixote Pirates]] and the former king of [[Characters/OnePieceDressrosa Dressrosa]]. Sly, rude and disrespectful towards the [[Characters/OnePieceWorldGovernment World Government]], Doflamingo is {{sadist}}ically playful with others, and seems to delight in causing and participating in chaos. In contrast to the sadistic way he treats most people, he is genuinely affectionate towards his quirky crew, who he considers to be his family (in a twisted reflection of Luffy's relationship with his crew). In turn, his crew all respect and love him, affectionately referring to him as "Doffy". He has eaten the String-String Fruit (''Ito Ito no Mi''), which allows him to produce strings and literally manipulate people like puppets, sever limbs with ease, and travel across the sky just as easily. He also demonstrates the ability to use Haki, being one of the few known users of Conqueror's Haki to exist.

** To Luffy, both care about their respective crews enough to violently avenge them, and suffered for their ancestry. But while Doflamingo is a former Celestial Dragon and a ManipulativeBastard who places his interests above a crew willing to die for him and killed his younger brother, Luffy is an IdiotHero from a family with a "D"-middle name who considers his crew as friends and took the death of his older brother Ace hard.

** Subverted. When Doflamingo begins his "Birdcage Plan," he assigns the highest bounty to ''Usopp'' – 500 million berries, almost twice that of the enemy leaders (300 million each). This is way overblown strength-wise, but justified by the fact that Usopp [[spoiler:knocked Sugar out]], causing the truth behind Dressrosa to be revealed to the public and the Marines, and putting Doflamingo in serious trouble.
** This is played straight with his reaction to people who try to take advantage of Baby 5's neurotic need to be needed to get her to marry them. He not only kills the men in question, but also razes the towns they live in and kill everyone there.

** To Luffy, both care about their respective crews enough to violently avenge them, suffered tragic pasts and were ostracized for their ancestry. But while Doflamingo is a former Celestial Dragon and a Maniuplative Bastard who places his interests above a crew willing to die for him, Luffy is from a family with a "D"-middle name who treat his crew like friends and would never sacrifice them for his own ends.

** Consistently subverted with his executives. Despite that one setback that completely destroys ten years worth of work and endanger his alliance with Kaido because of their failures, he chooses to focus his anger on Luffy and the others instead of his subordinates.
