She lived to 115 out of sheer determination to see Asuna again.]]

** Ayaka is the smart, beautiful, girly leader of Class 3-A while Asuna is the dumb, plain, and tomboyish "bad girl" of the class. With that said, when outside the class, Asuna tends to be more street savvy while Ayaka is blissfully naive.
** Ayaka was raised in wealth as the class {{Ojou}}, contrasting Asuna's more grounded upbringing... At least until it's revealed that Asuna is really a magical Princess.
** Ayaka is well known for her taste in little boys, while Asuna is well known for her taste in older men. Or men that ''look'' older than her at any rate.
** Ayaka relishes any chance to dress up whether in a bikini or dress, contrasting the more modest Asuna who hates frilly things and showing off her body. Ironically, Asuna takes the brunt of the nudity scenes in the series while Ayaka has very few of them.
** Finally, their interactions with Negi completely differ. Ayaka is smitten from the very beginning and rarely changes her stance on him, while Asuna is initially very prickly though she warms up later on.

* InterclassFriendship: With Asuna, until it turned out that Asuna was a princess, putting them at roughly the same social class.

* LockedOutOfTheLoop: She knows something's up, but Asuna refuses to spill out her secret life. She still tries to help them any way she can. During the Magic World arc, she uses mundane methods to figure out the key points and discover who Evangeline is. Negi then includes her in his plan to save the Magic World.

* ABirthdayNotABreak: She woke up on her tenth birthday having been transformed into an undying vampire and with blood on her mouth and hands after possibly killing her own family.

* BloodbathVillainOrigin: When she first awoke as a vampire on her tenth birthday, she found blood in her hands and mouth and the corpse of the one she killed nearby. This has clearly shaped how she interacts with others.

* CuteLittleFangs: She has little fangs at some points according to the moon cycle. After a full moon passes they vanish.

* DarkAndTroubledPast: It starts with "turned into a vampire and slaughtered her family in bloodlust at age ten," and just goes downhill from there.

* GamerChick: She has a suspicious fondness for talking about things in RPG terms, which finally gets payoff when the group stumbles in on her naked, eating potato chips and playing retro games.

* AGlassOfChianti: Sits back sipping alcohol during the Mahorafest final several hundred feet up in the air.

* HeelFaceTurn: She appears first as the villain before becoming a neutral force and finally Negi's teacher, though she refuses to step in and help him directly unless he has no other way out because she wants Negi to overcome as many obstacles on his own as he cam.

* HimeCut: Eva has blunt bangs, hip-length sidelocks, and ankle-length straight hair. She has an affinity for ElegantGothicLolita fashion and at one point, she mentions she lived in a castle in her childhood before she became a vampire, implying that she was royalty.

* MetaGuy: She often speaks of events in terms of video games. She even calls herself a mid/final boss so that the proto Ala Alba won't get too friendly with her.

* OurVampiresAreDifferent: Evangeline is known as a shinso/true ancestor and can create other vampires, though apart from briefly making a few of her classmates vampires we never see them. She apparently has no weakness to running water or holy symbols or possibly "grew out" of those like her original weakness to sunlight. Shinso are known as top tier monsters and have a number of abilities that are never elaborated on, but include the ability to make minions, immortality and an intense HealingFactor. Her vampiric abilities are apparently affected by the cycle of the moon.

* PrecociousCrush: PlayedWith. Although she is centuries older than Nagi Springfield, she very much acts like a smitten ten year old girl around him. She's so bashful that she had Chachazero tell Nagi her feelings on her own behalf.

* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: She was born and turned during the late middle ages (she mentions the 16th century at least once). She looks ten, but she's probably around seven hundred years old at a minimum.

* SillyRabbitIdealismIsForKids: Years of seeing the worst in people have worn down her idealism, and constantly tries to undo Negi's overwhelming idealistic nature. In the end they start to take cues from each other.

* StalkerWithACrush: After Nagi saved her life somehow, she fell in love and began following him around everywhere. He eventually had her sealed in Mahora to keep her from bugging him.

* WolverineClaws: When she wants to melee, she forms her hands in to large, sharp claws.

* AmbiguouslyEvil: Evangeline has a legendary villain reputation and she actively encourages it, but even when she was antagonistic towards Negi, she never acts as evil as she wants others to think she is. She only behaves like a cynical {{Tsundere}} around her classmates and accepts to mentor Negi when she has nothing to gain from it. It's up to interpretation if her villain history was always an exaggeration she used to scare people away or maybe being trapped in a school for over a decade did some good to her conduct. The way she tells her backstory suggests that she got labeled as evil because people kept hunting her for being a vampire and she [[KillingInSelfDefense killed them in self-defense]] and even then, she avoided killing women and children. Being a vampire in medieval Europe wasn't exactly the best situation for living a peaceful life. Eva, for her part, thinks that these excuses are flimsy and anyone who thinks she's not evil due to this is an idiot.

* FreudianExcuseIsNoExcuse: Eva was turned into a vampire as a child against her will and she killed many people to survive for hundreds of years. Asuna tries to defend Eva's actions by claiming she had no real choice in those circumstances. Eva, for her part, rejects Asuna's sympathy as she finds those excuses to be frivolous; her first murder was committed out of hatred for the one who turned her and she doesn't believe killing vampire hunters in self-defense is any more justifiable. In her opinion, her reputation as an evil monster is well-deserved.

* IHateYouVampireDad: While appearing to be perfectly okay with being immortal apart from [[NotGrowingUpSucks irritation that it has to be as an immortal child]], Evangeline was ''not'' happy with her transformation into a vampire when it happened at her tenth birthday (her bloodlust apparently causing her to kill someone who could have been her family had a lot to do with it). Eva states she got her revenge on the person who turned her and uses this fact to counter Asuna's claim that Eva only killed in self-defense.

* MentorInSourArmor: She's merciless when training Negi and later, other members of Ala Alba, but it's not hard to see she cares about them and refusing to go soft with them is her way of showing it. Evangeline knows from experience how hard life can be, so she wants to make sure her apprentices are ready to overcome any obstacle by testing their spirit in order to either make them quit before they regret anything or prepare them for the worst. She also passes along her world view to Negi, which states that good and evil are meaningless ideas, so he stops questioning whether stopping the HeroAntagonist Chao makes him a bad guy.

* OverlyLongName: Evangeline Athanasia Katherine [=McDowell=], with the two middle names usually initialized for short. This is one of the things that imply she was a nobleman's child before her transformation into a vampire.

* RetiredMonster: Forcibly in her case. After murdering people for hundreds of years and gaining a 6-million-dollar bounty, Nagi tricked her and left her trapped in Mahora to then completely forget about her. Having her magic powers sealed and not being able to graduate because of her unaging body, Evangeline spent the next fifteen years living like an ordinary schoolgirl, which bores her out of her mind.

* VampireBitesSuck: Negi does ''not'' enjoy getting bitten, which Eva and Chamo attribute to him being too young to know what he's missing.

* PsychologicalProjection: Evangeline was turned into a vampire at the tender age of ten, being forced to survive in Medieval Europe when the witch hunts still happened and in the course of centuries, she became one of the most infamous murderous mages known in her world. In short, she never had a real chance for a happy, normal life and views herself as an irredeemable villain because of all the people she killed. Now, Evangeline sees her classmates Setsuna and Asuna, who also had unhappy childhoods, are able to leave their harsh experiences behind them (or in Asuna's case, she was made forget about them to begin with) so they can live like carefree schoolgirls with friends. Since Setsuna and Asuna still seek the battlefield for the sake of protecting the ones they love, this causes Evangeline to project her own issues with her violent past and [[IJustWantToBeNormal yearning for normalcy]] onto the two girls.
** During the Mahora Martial Arts Tournament, Evangeline tries to pressure Setsuna into choosing between swordsmanship and everyday happiness since she insists Setsuna is becoming too soft to be the powerful warrior she was before. Through the encouragement of her friends, Setsuna chooses to have both her sword and happiness, something Evangeline doesn't seriously think Setsuna can do. Setsuna makes the positive assumption that Evangeline was putting her through a SecretTestOfCharacter so she doesn't become too relaxed, but Evangeline affirms she fully intended to make Setsuna give up either her sword or happiness. Afterwards, Evangeline tells Setsuna and Asuna a brief summary of her past, emphasizing that she has killed too many people and lived for too long to ever be happy. Since Setsuna isn't immortal nor a murderer, Evangeline believes she should give up swordsmanship and focus on living a peaceful life now that she has the chance.
** After hearing Asuna wants to go with Negi to the Magic World so she can watch over him, Evangeline puts her through a TrainingFromHell where Asuna could freeze to death in a snow mountain with full expectation that Asuna will quit and continue her easygoing schoolgirl lifestyle. Since she learned of Asuna's forgotten past from Albireo, Evangeline believes Asuna is making a big mistake by trying to throw away the normal life she could only obtain after losing her painful memories. Chachazero accuses Evangeline of feeling jealous that another girl who had similar terrible experiences to her own could have her memory erased while Evangeline still remembers she's a vampire who killed many people for centuries.

* ShanaClone: A surprising UrExample of the trope; Evangeline is one of the very first characters in manga to display several traits of the archetype popularized by light novels. She's a ReallySevenHundredYearsOld vampire sorceress stuck in a ten-year-old body, has blonde RapunzelHair, likes to dress in ElegantGothicLolita clothing, often wears Grade A ZettaiRyouiki, and is a very domineering {{Tsundere}} who refers to Negi as her minion. What sets her apart from other examples is that she plays the role of a teasy SexyMentor to the protagonist instead of a typical LoveInterest, although she still has her share of ShipTease with him.

* SympatheticMurderBackstory: Eva admits she killed too many people to count when she was a fledgling vampire struggling to survive in the Middle Ages. Although Eva tries to use this part of her past to reinforce her reputation as an evil monster, Asuna and Setsuna instead tear up at hearing about it and insistently defend Eva as a victim of circumstances who is in no way at fault for what she did, despite Eva disagreeing. Asuna tries to point out that she's only [[KillingInSelfDefense killed in self-defense,]] but Evangeline retorts that the first person she killed was a cold-blooded murder committed out of hatred.

* ArcVillain: She was the primary antagonist of the Mahorafest arc with Negi's primary struggle being that there isn't a particularly convincing case that she's doing anything ''wrong.'' Her upstanding moral behavior, refusal to lie and genuine good intentions leave the group conflicted about how to handle her.

They're also good friends with Kaede, who has taught them some basic techniques of her craft.

She's best remembered for proposing a "[[InvertedTrope Reverse]] [[WifeHusbandry Hikaru Genji Project]]" for Negi, after seeing just how cool he was in the Mahora Budokai. Although she followed Negi to the gate to Mundus Magicus with Yūna and the others, she was not transported there.
