* {{Foil}}: To Midoriya. Both want to be heroes and have their limitations. While Midoriya was naturally Quirkless, Shinso has a Quirk, but it can't be used for battle and is considered by people as an "evil" Quirk. Also, while Midoriya is TheParagon and tries to inspire people to follow him, Shinso is closer to a PragmaticHero, seeing use in simply manipulating others with his Quirk to achieve success in his plans.

* ShoutOut: His powers, as well as his hair color, bring to mind the ComicBook/{{Daredevil}} villain Zebediah Kilgrave[=/=]The Purple Man. Unlike The Purple Man, however, Shinso is ''very'' much on the side of good.

* TeenGenius: Still a high school sophomore, but she has a large and varied arsenal of gear intended to be used by heroes. She's even replicated equipment used by pro heroes.

** He can't make people talk (which is why he had to make Midoriya walk out of bounds, rather than say "I give up") or do other things that require using their cognitive functions (i.e. "write down the frog girl's name" -- even if the person knows who Tsuyu Asui is, they can't make the connection while brainwashed). This also means that contrary to a spectating Pro Hero's suggestion during the sports festival, his Quirk can't be used for interrogation or information gathering.

** Gets PlayedWith since 1-A ''also'' has a couple fledgling heroes whose ability aren't combat oriented or flashy either such as Mineta's Sticky Balls or Hokagure's {{Invisibility}}. As well, he gets a chance to transfer into the Hero Course himself after several months of training, so the point could be better said that people like him are stuck working twice as hard as those who lucked out at the entrance exam.

** Shinso is a general education student who wants to be a hero. Unfortunately, he's saddled with [[CompellingVoice a quirk]] that isn't only unsuited for combat situations, but also makes people think of him as a potential villain. He calls out Midoriya during their [[TournamentArc Sports Festival]] battle as not being able to understand what he's going through, but Midoriya can absolutely relate- having been a quirkless boy with no chance at passing the entrance exam before getting his power, and wanting to be a hero despite everyone telling him he can't.
** Shinso is also quite similar to Monoma who seems to have taken a liking for him since both of them have non-flashy situational Quirks (Monoma needs to touch other Quirk users to copy their Quirks, Shinso needs to have someone address him to make his mind control work) but both want to become pro-heroes regardless.

** He shares many traits with his mentor, Aizawa. They even both like cats in their profile.
** He's actually quite similar to Monoma who seems to have taken a liking for him since both of them have non-flashy situational Quirks (Monoma needs to touch other Quirk users to copy their Quirks, Shinso needs to have someone address him to make his mind control work) but both want to become pro-heroes regardless.

* SurprisinglyRealisticOutcome: Shinso's rematch with Deku during the Joint Training Battle [[OvershadowedByAwesome still largely goes in Deku's favor]], even with Monoma's assistance. Despite all of Shinso's [[TookALevelInBadass off-screen training]], Deku by that point has experienced multiple life-or-death battles and has multiple internships under his belt. Best illustrated when Shinso tries to escape using the Binding Cloth that Aizawa trained him to use, but then Midoriya manages to close in on him in a matter of seconds.

* BrainlessBeauty: A subverted example, while she can come across as naive she’s still part of The Big Three.

* GeniusDitz: Despite her attention deficiency the very fact that she’s one of the big three speak volumes of her skill level and isn’t someone to be underestimated.

* GlassCannon: Her Quirk is strong enough to knock out two giants in one hit, but she’s only as tough as a normal person.
