->In Liu Kang's [[VideoGame/MortalKombat1 New Era]], Baraka's origins would change. He was depicted as a successful Outworld merchant who was struck down by the deadly ''Tarkat'' virus, an affliction that causes gruesome deformities and causes the victims to descend into bloodthirsty insanity. Driven away from his livelihood and home, Baraka has banded with his fellow outcasts, determined to both fight for the rights of his fellow Tarkatans and find a cure for their shared disease.

* AdaptationalHeroism: In Liu Kang's new timeline, Baraka is merely looking out for his fellow Tarkat victims and once any misunderstanding is cleared between him and the Earthrealmers, he quickly allies himself with them.
* AdaptationalNiceGuy: Along with the AdaptationalHeroism above, Baraka is notably a lot more kinder than in his previous iterations, at times outright getting along with other kombatants and expressing concern that they catch his disease or that he'll lose control while sparring in some pre-fight intros.
* AdaptationalUgliness: Baraka has always looked ugly, but ''[=MK1=]'' makes him look worse with scars, open wounds and spikes jutting out unevenly on his arms and chest. This is all because he wasn't born a Tarkatan, but mutated into one as a result of a disease, so all the Tarkatan attributes are unnatural, physical aberrations.

* ADayInTheLimelight: He finally gets to be the focus character in a story mode in ''Mortal Kombat 1's'' Chapter 5, "Weird Science".

* EveryoneHasStandards: In his Mortal Kombat 1 (2023) version, where he is a good guy, albeit one with tarkat infection, he is adamant that his disease is a terrible fate for anyone to have. However, when Nitara ask him to kidnap other outworlders for Vaeternus to breed, he flat out tells her that it is fate worse than having Tarkat. For him to say that means it must be pretty awful.

* FaceOfAThug: In ''[=MK1=]'', he seems to be the same hideous and savage Baraka of previous timelines, but quickly proves to be a noble and compassionate warrior.

* {{Jerkass}}:
** ''Big time'' in ''11'', where he expresses much more of a personality. Most of his interactions with other characters are rude or insulting, with about the ''only'' person him wholly respecting being Jade.

** He has a few shades of this in ''1'', where he is impatient and quick to anger, but it's downplayed as he is unambigiously noble if grumpy hero and is [[YourDaysAreNumbered slowly dying from his disease]].

** Finally subverted as of ''1'', where he is [[ADayInTheLimelight given his own playable story chapter]].

** In ''Mortal Kombat 1'', he ''[[ActuallyPrettyFunny openly laughs]]'' at the idea of Johnny thinking Kitana is interested in him.

* {{Retcon}}: Originally, it was stated that the Tarkata were a cross between Outworld humans and demons from the Netherrealm. However, this seems to have been dropped come the reboot, as Baraka claims in the tenth game that Shao Kahn conquered his realm. Retconned again in the ''1'' timeline, where Tarkatans are Outworld citizens mutated by the Tarkat infection.

->With the timeline once again reset, Smoke is reborn in the New Era. Born to a family of hunters, he and his family accidentally ventured into Lin Kuei territory and were attacked, with Smoke ending up being the only survivor. The Grandmaster at the time, Sub-Zero's father, decided to adopt him as an act of atonement for his subordinates' actions. Raised alongside Sub-Zero and Scorpion as his brothers, Smoke steadily became accustomed to his new life as a Lin Kuei warrior. Though lacking his brothers' elemental gifts, he learned how to utilize practical magic in order to keep up with them.

* EmpoweredBadassNormal: According to his bio for ''1'', the New Era version of Smoke has no supernatural abilities of his own, but learned "practical magic" as a way to keep up with his adopted brothers, Sub-Zero and Scorpion.

* KungFuWizard: In ''VideoGame/MortalKombat1'', Smoke uses "practical magic" to create his smoke-based powers and is an accomplished martial artist as well.
