* OutOfFocus: Much like Umi, she receives less focus in Season 2 and mostly serves as support for Honoka.

Five Man Band is undergoing a wick-cleaning project, so examples lacking context on a team dynamic or what the team does will be deleted.

* FiveManBand: Before Maki and the third years joined, Honoka was TheLeader (the character with the most focus and very charismatic), Kotori was TheLancer (the very close, loyal quiet, gentle and well-balanced friend of TheLeader), Umi was TheSmartGirl (the most rational and logical girl, academically very gifted and work-oriented), Rin was TheBigGuy (even more of a GenkiGirl than Honoka and the {{tomboy}} who loves sports) and Hanayo was TheChick (the cute, sweet and girly ShrinkingViolet).

* HiddenDepths: [[spoiler:[[TheChessmaster Her machinations for bringing the nine girls together]] take on a bit more meaning when her backstory is revealed in episode 8 of season 2. As she herself explains, after approaching Eli and finding a friend in her, she starts finding other girls with "boundless potential", but is unable to reach out to them due to her problems with approaching others. When the second-years form µ's, she uses that opportunity to bind the nine of them together and give herself a chance to be a part of something bigger that could connect her feelings with those of the other 8 girls. In other words, while she may have had selfless motives in giving the other girls a chance to express their passion together, to her, µ's is a group where she could finally form truly special bonds with others - her own special miracle.]]

* NiceGirl: PlayedWith. Umi is pretty strict (especially towards Honoka), and she isn't shy about showing her feelings of disappointment at laziness or incompetence, which is common because she's usually pushed far. That said, she's still a very kind and loyal friend at heart, who worries about the well-being of her friends, and overall she's very polite and graceful.

to:

* NiceGirl: PlayedWith. A somewhat odd example due to the situations that happen in the series. Umi fundamentally ''is'' a very kind person, but a side that's seen often of her onscreen is that she's pretty strict (especially towards Honoka), and she isn't shy about showing her feelings of disappointment at laziness or incompetence, which is common incompetence. That said, this essentially happens because she's usually pushed far. That said, too far, and ultimately it's still shown she's still a very kind and loyal friend at heart, who worries about the well-being of her friends, and overall friends. Overall, in her behavior, she's also very polite and graceful.

idt Umi being a nice girl is played straight tbh, especially when a good deal of her screentime is her withdrawn and strict self.

* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Nico is actually pretty surly despite her cutesy act, and can be kind of an egomaniac and downright nasty and obnoxious sometimes, due to her self-centeredness. * AntiHero: If there is one character to consider as this in such a lighthearted series, Nico qualifies. She's rather antagonistic at first, and when she joins (which she did in first place for self-serving reasons) she's still quite irritable and self-absorbed. * {{Determinator}}:
** Double subverted. Honoka is initially described as someone who tends to get overly excited over a prospect, dragging everyone around her into achieving said prospect only to lose confidence in the end and quit (causing trouble for everyone involved). When she initially tries to form a school idol group, she doesn't have much luck in it, and it seemed like history would repeat itself towards the end of season 1, but Honoka ends defying expectations by never truly giving up. She puts everything she has into become a school idol and against all odds (and despite numerous setbacks) she succeeds.
** She also plays this straight in episode 11. Since she had already been training very hard, the other girls tell her to take it easy. She refuses and, [[TooDumbToLive one day during the rain, keeps training]]. [[spoiler:It later bites her back by [[HeroicRROD contracting a severe fever that jeopardizes her performance at the school festival]].]]

She did get better though, as the wound becomes less noticeable as she grew up.
