* DotingParent: While early flashbacks depicted Bug as a gruff and perhaps a mean father, Bug is very loving and gentle towards Dale and glad to see him after their years of estrangement, and it's easy to see where Dale got his loving, if somewhat unorthodox, parenting style towards Joseph from. It's also important to note that these flashbacks are from the point of view of Dale, a somewhat unreliable narrator who has a strong tendency to exaggerate.

Dale's estranged father, who is revealed to work at a gay rodeo and is in a gay relationship. Seen mostly in flashbacks until he and Dale are reunited for Dale and Nancy having a second wedding to renew their vows.

* TheBeard: His estrangement from Dale began when Dale caught him kissing Nancy at his wedding, and Dale mistook it for him making a move on Nancy. In actuality, he had been caught flirting with his lover and eventual husband, Juan Pedro, by Dale and Nancy, and in desperation to not be outed as gay, he grabbed Nancy and kissed her.
* CampGay: Plays up a number of stereotypically gay mannerisms, voice, and dress, in part because of his role in a gay rodeo.
* DotingFather: While early flashbacks depicted Bug as a gruff and perhaps a mean father, Bug is very loving and gentle towards Dale and glad to see him after their years of estrangement, and it's easy to see where Dale got his loving, if somewhat unorthodox, parenting style towards Joseph from. It's also important to note that these flashbacks are from the point of view of Dale, a somewhat unreliable narrator who has a strong tendency to exaggerate.
* HappilyMarried: To Juan Pedro. He also admits that he loved Dale's mother but couldn't stand to continue to subject her to living with a gay man.
* MistakenForGay: Subverted. When Dale again rejects him, Bug thinks that it's because Dale is ashamed of him for being gay. Dale actually threatened to disown him after mistakenly thinking Bug was a Federal agent. When Bug finally comes out to Dale as gay and assures him that he is not a government agent, Dale is warmly supportive.
* RetCon: In early flashbacks, as seen in the accompanying picture, he looks and sounds exactly like his son, Dale, and was voiced by Dale's actor, Johnny Hardwick using a slightly deeper rendition of Dale's voice. When he finally shows up for real in the series, he has a much different appearance and is voiced by David Herman in a higher-pitched voice.

SE Asian person here, this entry seems a bit misinformed as Khanh's background is not dissimilar from other SE Asian refugees irl. Kahn mentions fleeing Laos at least once or twice, needing to go through Cambodia (Uh-oh Canada S13, E18). Also, Laos had a civil war and as far as I can recall, it's never mentioned what party his FIL was on. His family are seen as living very comfortably, not low on the socio-economic scale. There were many refugees from the Indochina war who came to the US and live successfully like Kahn does. Different culture, but for example, there's a lot of successful Viet folks in the US who arrived as refugees. This trope applies, but not with his background.

** Kahn's backstory is generally presented as one better fitting an Asian immigrant from North-East Asia opposed to South-East Asia. The vast majority of Laotian immigrants came to the US as refugees in the aftermath of the Vietnam War and a Communist coup displaced US aligned groups, mostly in the back country. Kahn being an engineer who ran off with a General's daughter better fits Korean or Taiwanese immigrants during the same time period. At the same time, extended family has been shown off to be lower on the socioeconomic scale, and several episodes are devoted to Kahn's rejection of his Laotian roots.
