* DangerouslyGenreSavvy: His trick where he fakes Zolda's death, it nearly broke Shinji's will before he found Gorou ([[WrongGenreSavvy whom he thought was Zolda at the time]]) turns out to be alive. Later in the series he manages to nearly remove Asakura from the fight by playing the coward and luring into a squad of police officers, whom on his instructions, take Asakura's Advent Deck, and [[CrazyPrepared when transporting him cover all the windows in the truck near him]]. The only reason Asakura escaped was because he kept a Contract Card under his shirt and the tore off the paper covering the windows.

* CombatPragmatist: Attacks his opponents from behind with his Final Vent or when he's teaming up with someone else. This is why he's been capable of defeating the likes of Asakura, Kitaoka, and Shinji. Unfortunately for him, the former two are DangerouslyGenreSavvy and are more than eager to pay him back in the form of one CurbStompBattle after another.

%%* HorribleJudgeOfCharacter* HorribleJudgeOfCharacter: Believes in many riders possibly being good(Asakura being an obvious exception), even when some of them include a corrupt cop who plastered his partner into a wall, a rich kid who thought it'd be fun to get people to kill each other, and a guy who believes he can be a hero by sacrificing other people.

* TheEveryman: For both his own series and the entire FRANCHISE. Where every single Rider before and after Shinji had something to do with the forces that moved the story onward or had some tragic past that defined them, Shinji was just a normal guy who accidentally stumbled into the Rider War. Because AND despite the fact that he had nothing to lose or gain by entering, he gave his all to stop the fighting.
** This even extends to his powers: He's a JackOfAllStats.

* {{Revenge}}: What got him involved in the first place.
** RevengeBeforeReason: He seems to subvert this trope as his main objective is stopping the war and he only returned to the revenge issue once the monster that killed his friend appeared, and yet he was capable of fighting effectively in spite of his enraged state and quickly came back to normal once he achieved it. He also averts this trope when Kanzaki reveals that Asakura was the one who broke Yuuichi's fingers, which caused him to join the Rider War and die when he refused to participate. Tezuka refused to fall for the bait, giving Ren his Survive Card instead.
