* ContrastingSequelAntagonist: To Captain Gutt from the previous film. Gutt was an omnivorous Ice Age-era mammal who commanded a crew of piratical animals of different species who survived by raiding ice floes of whatever they had to offer, and became consumed by a desire for revenge against Manny after his and his friends' efforts to get home cost Gutt two of his ships and the loyalty of one of his crew members. Gavin, meanwhile, is a carnivore from the dinosaur world who leads a much smaller pack of egg thieves consisting of himself and his two children, and seeks revenge on Buck for getting in the way of his family's egg heists. While Gutt became a personal enemy of Manny after his attempts on Ellie and Peaches' lives, Gavin's grudge is focused solely on Buck and didn't even interact with any of the herd until the climax of his debut movie. Also, whereas Gutt was a BadBoss to his subordinates, cared only about himself, and ended up dying after being bested by Manny, Gavin, [[ParentalFavoritism despite being quite hard on his son Roger while preferring his daughter Gertie]], cares for both his children and underwent a HeelFaceTurn to help the herd save the planet, and [[RedemptionEqualsLife lived to survive the events of the fifth movie]].

A group of piratical animals that serve Captain Gutt, consisting of Squint, a psychotic rabbit, Raz, a tough Australian kangaroo, Flynn, a dim-witted English elephant seal, Gupta, a cowardly Indian badger, Silas, a smug blue-footed booby from France, and Dobson, a mute boar and formerly Shira.

One Ice Age online game even identifies him as a metriorhynchid (a group of fully aquatic marine crocodiles from the Mesozoic).

** In a commercial for licensed [=McDonald's=] toys based on the third movie, Manny incorrectly identifies the Ankylosaurus as a carnivore.

* AdaptationalBadass: ''Troodon'' appear as a more serious threat in the ''[[VideoGame/IceAge video game]]''.

* WomenAreWiser: Given that she's working with [[LeeroyJenkins Buck]], [[TheDitz Crash and Eddie]], it's inevitable.

[[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin Sid's grandmother.]] She's [[{{Cloudcuckoolander}} rather nutty,]] and also shows horrendously bad personal hygiene. The rest of Sid's family searched for him with the only purpose to dump her with him then scram. When she disappears early in the film only to later be found "stowing away" on the Herd's little "boat", they have no choice but to take her with them. Has an imaginary pet called Precious. [[spoiler:Who turns out to be real.]]

* TheSmartGuy: Most prominently in the first film, because he's too smart to know that, if he just changes sides quickly, it won't end well plus he's shown to be smart when they show how he manipulates Manny and Sid to think that he's leading them to "the humans". Furthermore he came up with a plan to escape Soto's pack, which worked for the most part. It is carried over in the sequels to; Diego is able to keep a cool head and come up with ideas while everyone else is panicking. In the second movie it was Diego who quickly came up with a plan when everyone (including himself) was dangling or balancing on an entirely unstable pile of rocks.

* DidntThinkThisThrough: In the climax, when [[TheBigGuy Momma T-Rex]] has a toothache and Buck has to pull it out, she takes Buck "winking" as a sign to knock her out. Of course, this is while [[BigBad Orson]] is preparing to attack, and Momma is their only reinforcement. Zee realizes her mistake [[OhCrap in great shock]], and inevitably, they get captured.

* ShadowArchetype: He represents what Manny would have become if he had let his hatred get the better of him.

* AesopAmnesia: He never does get over his fear of something happening to Ellie and Peaches, but considering that he watched his first family die while he was unable to protect them (and that dangerous things refuse to stop happening), this is entirely justified. However, he's had to learn to respect the fact that Peaches isn't a baby anymore several times.

* TheBigGuy: Manny is a combination of Classes 1 and 2. He's a GentleGiant, but you do NOT want to piss him off because he will attempt to kill you.

* TheHeavy: Diego is the most active villainous presence in the first film.

* RevengeBeforeReason: He's hell-bent on killing Roshan as an act of vengeance against the human tribe that wiped out several members of his pack, and he will not be deterred even by the fact that he's a baby. In fact his want for revenge is what directly leads to his death when [[spoiler:he's about to finish off Diego but gets distracted by Sid approaching with Roshan; Manny takes advantage by hitting Soto into a wall right below some icicles.]]
