** Also a some what odd example as Spooner's main issue with the robots is that they run purely on programming. In essence his problem boils down to that they ''aren't advanced enough'' to think like a real person, so he doesn't trust them. Once he realizes Sonny can rationalize and make his own choices rather then just follow his programming he treats Sonny like a person, albeit one he initially doesn't like very much.

** This incident is portrayed as the main reason Spooner is prejudiced against robots— he believes that their lack of human empathy and reliance on cold logic makes them a detriment to society. He tells Susan Calvin that a human would have known that a 12-year-old is worth saving more than an adult (or at least try to), despite the disparity between their statistical odds of survival.

* JustAMachine: [[ZigZaggedTrope Zig-Zagged]] overall. Spooner says to the android Sonny: "Human beings have dreams. Even dogs have dreams, but not you, you're just a machine," but then later deliberately provokes Sonny to have an angry outburst in order to prove that he ''isn't'' just an emotionless piece of hardware and therefore perfectly capable of murdering Lanning of his own free will. Ultimately subverted, since he's one of the few people who actually sees robots as not just machines (and loathes them for it... [[CharacterDevelopment at first),]] and his FantasticRacism against them isn't from seeing them as mere machines but because, despite being capable of emotion and independence, their thought process is dominated by cold logic, and would always attend to TheNeedsOfTheMany over making an emotional judgement; [[spoiler: It would later be revealed that his hate for them came from being ''saved'' by an android who, when presented with the choice of saving Spooner or a young girl from sinking vehicles, chose Spooner simply because Spooner had a higher chance of survival despite Spooner clearly wanting the girl saved first.]]
