A rare double subversion. He looked, at the least, less reasonable...and then the subversion was subverted, and it turned out he was never far out of character.

Added DiffLines:

** Double subverted in Season 3. In the season's first four episodes, it seemed that he was being extremely cruel to Carrie (whether it was somewhat deserved, fans can disagree on). He also had a KickTheDog scene with an Islamic analyst that looked very bad. But at the end of Episode 4, [[spoiler: TheReveal showed that he and Carrie had actually been working together, and Saul had not lost his morality. He then was shown as a ReasonableAuthorityFigure throughout the rest of the season, although some thought that he had become too much like TheSpock, willing to sacrifice individuals' safety for TheNeedsOfTheMany.]]

Read Handling Spoilers. Under no circumstances put the name of the trope in spoiler tags. Also, Killed Off For Real does NOT just mean \"The character dies\". It means \"The character dies, permanently, in a setting where deaths can often be reversed.\" The last part of this description does not match \"Homeland\".

There\'s really no way Carrie could be described as an Idiot Hero- sure she makes a lot of reckless/bad decisions, but she\'s clearly very \"book smart\", as fits her job as a CIA analyst, and good at various aspects of spycraft. Note- she certainly makes a lot of stupid decisions and does not seem as competent as the show tries to present her, but she doesn\'t really fit the contours of that trope
