A mysterious figure who seeks the destruction of the Clans. His plans involved tracking down the enigmatic tom known as Arise. Although his identity is unclear, he has apparently committed a deed so horrible that even thinking about it would be an enormous crime.

A she-cat working for The Watcher. As part of his plan, she kidnaps two newborn kits.

* TheFaceless: Who is she? What Clan is she from? What does she look like? The only thing that we know about her is that in the first six chapters and the interlude, one of the appearing characters is her.

A grumpy [=ThunderClan=] warrior. Many Clan cats believe that her murdered [=ThunderClan=]'s former deputy Whisperwing so that his niece Sandstone could be deputy.

* IGaveMyWord: He never breaks a promise, even if it means putting himself in danger. [[spoiler:He even dies to keep a promise that seemed to be a joke.]]

* LeaderWannabe: Her dream is to become Clan leader.

With the old ''Literature/WarriorCats'' characters joining the ranks of [=StarClan=], ''Golden Dawn'' picks up the slack with many replacements.

!!Galeflight
->"You still don't understand me. As long as I can protect those precious to me, there's nothing I wouldn't sacrifice!"

The father of Leafkit, Hawkkit, and Gustkit, Galeflight is a tom who dreams of becoming [=WindClan=]'s leader and bringing peace to the Clans. He is brave and honourable to a fault, which often annoys his Clanmates.

* IdiotHero: Fieldstone is always there pointing out that he isn't very bright.

* LeaderWannabe: His goal is to become Clan leader.
* MartialPacifist: He talks about peace nearly every time he appears, but he still has plenty of fights against cats like Bear and Slash.

[=WindClan=]'s medicine cat. She went from apprentice to a full medicine cat at eight moons, because her mentor was killed by a passing fox.

* ActionGirl: Not usually, but she does help Tidepaw fight Bear during the Gathering Island Battle.
* ActuallyIAmHim: Tidepaw mistakes her for the [=WindClan=] medicine apprentice. However, Rainpaw is the one to do the correcting.
* BigDamnHeroes: She saves Tidepaw from Bear in Chapter Two.
* CelibateHero: As a medicine cat, she can never have a mate.
* CombatMedic: While a medicine cat, she is also trained to fight.
* GreenEyes: She's a green-eyed medic and is closely associated with [=StarClan=].
* TheMedic: She's [=WindClan=]'s medicine cat.
* TheMentor: She's going to be Leafkit's mentor.
* MrExposition: Her main role is to explain the plot to Leafkit and Tidepaw.
* ScarsAreForever: At the end of Chapter Three, Leafkit notices that she has a small scar.
* YoungAndInCharge: She was put in charge of her Clan's medical and spiritual needs at only eight moons old.

!!Ravenstar (Ravenfeather)
->"Why should we encourage the breaking of the Warrior Code?"

[=WindClan=]'s leader. He disagrees with [=RiverClan=] taking [=WindClan=] prey, even though [=RiverClan=] needs the prey to survive.

* {{Jerkass}}: He treats Otterstar cruelly, denying her prey even though [=RiverClan=] is starving and [=WindClan=] has lots of food.
* TheLeader: He's [=WindClan=]'s leader.

!!Fieldstone

One of [=WindClan=]'s senior warriors. She has a deep hatred for Galeflight.

* ActionGirl: She fights frequently, mostly seen in her battle with the rogues in Chapter 3.
* IronicEcho: In Chapter 9, [[spoiler:as Galeflight lies dying, she repeats the words she told him when he promised to protect her, only this time with a completely different context.]]
* {{Jerkass}}: She frequently insults those around her, and calls Galeflight an idiot nearly every time she talks to him.
* OnlySaneMan: Considers herself this in Chapter Three when everyone else ignores how stupid Galeflight's plan is.

A kind and affectionate [=WindClan=] warrior.

* BigDamnHeroes: She appears just in time to prevent Slash from grabbing Leafkit in Chapter Three.
* TheMentor: If Chapter 3 is any indication, she'll end up as this to Leafkit. However, in Chapter 9 she [[spoiler:replaces the now deceased Galeflight as Harepaw's mentor]], as Leafkit is going to become a medicine cat.
* ShipTease: With Thistlepelt in Chapter Three.

!!Dovesong
->"We won't deprive them of a kindness just because they remain ignorant of it. From the fiercest of rogues to the tiniest of kits."

The mother of Leafkit, Hawkkit, and Gustkit. She cares deeply for them.

* [[MrExposition Mrs. Exposition]]: Her role so far has been to explain the 16th rule of the Warrior Code, and to say that Galeflight never breaks his promises.

Dovesong's younger brother. He's a fairly capable warrior, but he's not very confident.

* ApologizesALot: Every line of dialogue from him has the word "sorry" in it. Hawkkit eventually decides that he'll only stop constantly apologizing if he stops talking.
* ShipTease: With Brambletail in Chapter Three.

An egotistical [=WindClan=] apprentice. (Now a warrior, as of Chapter 9.)

* ThirdPersonPerson: Refers to himself as "the mighty Boulderpaw" sometimes.

[=WindClan=]'s deputy. He's also the father of Snowcloud and Tigertail.

* NumberTwo: He's [=WindClan=]'s deputy.
* MinorMajorCharacter: He has the very important position of [=WindClan=]'s deputy, but he has done next to nothing.

!!Tidepaw
->"Everyone always overlooks the happy ones. The ones who sulk stand out, but nobody ever thinks that someone so cheerful could be so broken inside."

One of the three main point of view characters. Tidepaw is an upbeat [=RiverClan=] she-cat who never lets anything get her down, despite recent misfortune. At least, that's what she pretends. In reality, Tidepaw hates herself, and hides dark secrets which she believes would cause her Clanmates to hate her.

* ActionGirl: She fights frequently, taking on Bear in Chapter 2 and Darkclaw in Chapter 4.
* BeneathTheMask: She seems to be an excitable and upbeat she-cat, but that's a false persona she uses to prevent her Clanmates from hating her.
* BreakTheCutie: She seems broken beyond repair. However, we don't actually know what made her that way.
* DarkSecret: She has one, but it's only been hinted at. In Chapter 8 [[spoiler:part of her secret turns out to be that she killed her father, Quailfeather.]]
* GenkiGirl: She pretends to be an energetic and optimistic she-cat.
* HealingFactor: The wounds she received during her fight with Bear have mysteriously healed by the time she leaves the Gathering Island.
* HeroicBSOD: In Chapter 4, when Darkclaw wounds Brightpaw. She manages to snap out of it when her mentor Graywave tells her that Brightpaw will be okay.
* [[spoiler:MurderMakesYouCrazy]]: [[spoiler:A great deal of her self-loathing and depression stems from her guilt over killing her own father.]]
* MysteriousPast: Something happened to break her so hard. It involves Darkclaw, but the rest has only been hinted at.
* OhCrap: In Chapter 4, when she realizes that she has a {{healing factor}}.
* [[spoiler:{{Patricide}}]]: Darkclaw reveals in Chapter 8 that [[spoiler:the rogues did not in fact kill Tidepaw's father Quailfeather. He was killed by Tidepaw herself.]]

* PromotionToParent: She has had to care for her sister Brightpaw ever since her father was killed by rogues and her mother went missing.
* SadClown: Her plucky and humorous nature is just a ruse for her misery.
* ScarsAreForever: She has a noticeable scar across her forehead. It's still as fresh as when she first got it, which perplexes Sunstorm.
* StepfordSmiler: She's faking her cheerfulness to deal with trauma, and to give Brightpaw someone to lean on.
* StepfordSnarker: Seems like a snarky joker, but she's really incredibly miserable and hates herself.
* [[spoiler:SympatheticMurderer]]: [[spoiler:She killed her own father, but since she's a point of view character, the reader gets to see just how much she hates herself over it.]]

!!Rainpaw
->"I think we can all find cats who we admire for their strength."

The [=RiverClan=] medicine apprentice. She was a loner, but joined [=RiverClan=] when she was fairly young. Before that, her brother Scratch died because of a disease, which made her vow to never lose a cat to sickness again. She is also Tidepaw's best friend, and tries to offer moral support even when her friend fights against it. Boulderpaw of [=WindClan=] has a one-sided rivalry with her.

* CelibateHero: She's a medicine cat, so she can never take a mate.
* CombatMedic: She is a trained fighter and healer.
* [[spoiler:DamselInDistress]]: In Chapter 9, [[spoiler:she is captured by [=WindClan=] and taken prisoner.]]
* TheMedic: She's the medicine apprentice of [=RiverClan=].
* LoveAtFirstPunch: Tidepaw jokes that ever tom she fights falls in love with her.

!!Brightpaw
->"We're all starving, and the Clan needs strong warriors more than they need a sickly apprentice."

Tidepaw's sister. A quarter moon before Tidepaw's story began, she sometime obtained an incurable illness.

* [[IllGirl Ill She-cat]]: She has a severe illness that hampers her at crucial moments.
* IncurableCoughOfDeath: Nightheart goes out of his way to explain that he has found no cure for her illness.

!!Wildpaw

Tidepaw's self-proclaimed rival. He loves fighting, and is always challenging other cats. His mentor is Amberfang.

* AMinorKidroduction: He first shows up as a kit in Tidepaw's flashback. Then he appears in the present as one of Tidepaw's friends.
* HotBlooded: He loves fighting. He's often challenging Tidepaw to fights, and when he meets Harepaw, he quickly challenges him to one.
* TheRival: He declares himself to be Tidepaw's rival.

!!Otterstar (Otterfur/Nightclaw)
->"We may not be as strong as you, but we are fighting for our very survival! We won't lose."

[=RiverClan=]'s leader. She struggles to deal with the current food shortage, but is finding it increasingly difficult to save her Clan. She is also a former [=ShadowClan=] warrior who joined [=RiverClan=] after a [=RiverClan=] warrior made a large impact on her life during the war against the Sky Avengers.

* BigGood: She's the most heroic of the leaders.
* EnemyMine: She teams up with Duskstar and [=ShadowClan=] to defeat Bonetail.
* HurtingHero: In addition to the problems facing her Clan, she lost her kits.
* TheLeader: She's the leader of [=RiverClan=].
* WorkingWithTheEx: Works with Finflutter to create a strategy to defeat Bonetail.

!!Finflutter
->"Yo, [=ShadowClan=] and [=RiverClan=]!"

A tom who always steals Nightheart's catnip and gets high with it. He was once a respected warrior and the mate of [=RiverClan=]'s leader Otterstar, but he fell into depression when his kits died.

* BunnyEarsLawyer: Even though he's crazy and depressed, he still was able to come up with a good strategy that [=RiverClan=] and [=ShadowClan=] could use to defeat Bonetail.
* FamedInStory: He's a legend because he led the Clans to the defeat of the Sky Avengers. However, he doesn't quite live up to the stories.
* HiddenDepths: At first he appears to be some idiot stoner character, but then it turns out that he was once a legendary strategist and Otterstar's mate.
* HurtingHero: He fell into depression after his kits died.
* TheStoner: To dull the pain of the deaths of his kits, he takes catnip and gets high off of it.
* TheStrategist: He was formerly one of the greatest strategists born to the Clans in years. He was also the one to create the strategy that defeated the Sky Avengers. However, his strategic skills fell into disuse after his kits died.

!!Amberfang
->"That's another problem with ideals. Some cats ''do'' follow them with absolute conviction. They craft themselves into the image of their ideals, and do not fail to follow them. But when they're beaten down by all around them, when the very world rejects their principles, they themselves will shatter like ice. Beware, young she-cat."

Wildpaw's mentor. He's a former medicine apprentice, but during the battle against the Sky Avengers he chose to become a warrior apprentice to avenge his fallen Clanmates. In the present he's a respected member of [=RiverClan=] and one of Otterstar's chief strategists, but he's not very nice.

* DrillSergeantNasty: He's a strict mentor, and isn't very kind.
* {{Jerkass}}: He isn't very nice to Tidepaw.
* TheMedic: He was Nightheart's apprentice for a time. However, he chose to become a warrior apprentice instead.

!!Quailfeather
->"It's not a question of how strong I am. It's how I gain my strength. I believe that when we are protecting something precious to ourselves, we can grow more ferocious than the warriors of [=TigerClan=]."

The father of Tidepaw and Brightpaw. He was killed by rogues before the story began.

* PosthumousCharacter: The rogues killed him a week before Tidepaw's first point of view chapter. [[spoiler:It's later revealed that he was actually killed by Tidepaw.]]

!!Swanwing

The mother of Tidepaw and Brightpaw. She disappeared on the same day her mate Quailfeather was killed.

* MissingMom: She disappeared mysteriously a week before Tidepaw's first point of view chapter.
* UnnamedParent: Until Chapter 4, when we learn that her name is Swanwing.

!!Nightheart

[=RiverClan=]'s medicine cat. He promises to never give up on a patient.

* CelibateHero: He can never take a mate due to being a medicine cat.

!!Darkclaw
->"Is it arrogant of me to want the she-cat who birthed me to give a simple sign that she loves me?"

One of the three main point of view characters. He is the son of [=ShadowClan=]'s leader, Duskstar, and his distance from her causes him great stress. He is very bloodthirsty, but his deepest desire is to be acknowledged by his Clan. He has some sort of history with Tidepaw. He was also the one who discovered the body of her father Quailfeather, who was killed by rogues.

* AntiHero: He does care for his Clan and is firmly on the side of the good guys, but he's also extremely violent and a jerk.
* ArchEnemy: To Tidepaw.
* AxCrazy: He often forgets everything except his bloodlust. Creamfur and Owlflight have had to snap him out of it.
* BerserkButton: Talking about how he was mentored by Bonetail sets him off into a rage.
* EarNotch: Tidepaw tears his ear in Chapter 4.
* HotBlooded: He's completely obsessed with battle, and goes charging into it without thinking.
* {{Jerkass}}: Tidepaw sees him as one. His point of view shows us that she's right, as he constantly insults other cats and has serious temper problems.
* MysteriousPast: Something happened between him and Tidepaw, and it serves as a driving source of conflict.
* PostVictoryCollapse: After defeating Bonetail, he falls over due to the injuries he was ignoring.
* RoyalBrat: He will not shut up about being the Clan Leader's son. However, he's doing it because of issues with his mother.
* ShipTease: Just to troll the audience, he has gotten relationship hints with quite a few cats.
** Hopepaw: He wanted to be her mentor, and they realize how much they understand each other in Chapter 8 and start rubbing against each other.
** Snowcloud: She's the only cat he considers a friend, they always talk with each other at Gatherings, he apparently went to Foxwhisker and asked her to take him to see her, and he is obsessed with her in his flashback.
** Owlflight: In Chapter 8, she goes out and looks for him in the middle of the night and tells him that she wants to fight alongside him. Also, she says that he used to be cute.
** Tidepaw: They used to be friends, and despite how much he claims to hate her he still carries her to a medicine cat when she gets injured in a battle.
* SlasherSmile: When attacking Brightpaw in Chapter 4.
* WellDoneSonGuy: He strives to earn the approval of his mother Duskstar, but finds it hard due to the distance between them.

!!Duskstar

[=ShadowClan=]'s leader, and the mother of Darkclaw and Cherrynose. She had her kits when she was deputy, but was forced to leave the Nursery when her predecessor died. Nowadays, Darkclaw struggles to earn her approval.

* EnemyMine: Agrees to work with Otterstar and [=RiverClan=] to take down Bonetail.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: She refuses to help [=RiverClan=] in Chapter 2, but in Chapter 7 it turns out that she had some of her warriors take food to [=RiverClan=].
* TheLeader: She's the leader of [=ShadowClan=].

!!Redclaw
->"I'll keep walking this path, as long as it leads me to further strength."

[=ShadowClan=]'s deputy. He doesn't agree with his leader's decision to abandon [=RiverClan=].

* NumberTwo: He's the deputy of [=ShadowClan=].
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: He wants to help [=RiverClan=] with their food problems.

!!Foxwhisker
->"Heroic tales of fancy would only serve to cause impressionable young rat-brains like you to make stupid decisions in an attempt to emulate the Heroes of Prophecy."

[=ShadowClan=]'s medicine cat. She is sarcastic, and enjoys picking on Darkclaw.

* CelibateHero: She isn't allowed a mate because she's a medicine cat.
* DeadpanSnarker: Tends to be dryly snarky. An example from Chapter 8 comes when she is trying to lure some rogues into a trap.

One of [=ShadowClan=]'s warriors. He's Bonetail's brother, and is somewhat grumpy.

* AscendedExtra: Introduced as a minor character, but gets more important in each chapter he appears.
* IKnowYouAreInThereSomewhereFight: Tries to bring the noble part of his brother back by defeating him in battle. However, he fails and Darkclaw is the one to defeat Bonetail.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: Darkclaw is very surprised when Sootstain actually begs him to save Bonetail, because Sootstain is usually very grumpy and aloof.
* StarCrossedLovers: He and a [=RiverClan=] she-cat fell in love and had kits together, but they're apart now. Those kits are Skystorm and Grasstail of [=RiverClan=] and Creamfur of [=ShadowClan=].

!!Hopepaw
->"The Winds of Death can never be cheated."

A small white she-kit (now Owlflight's apprentice) who often bothers Darkclaw. She can somehow tell when cats will die with a mysterious power known as "The Winds of Death".

* CatchPhrase: "Oh my frog!"
* CheerfulChild: Alternates between this and CreepyChild. The cheerful part comes out when she's talking about frogs.
* CreepyChild: Alternates between this and CheerfulChild. The creepy part comes out when she's talking about the Winds of Death.
* HoldYourHippogriffs: Does this to the terminology of the Clans themselves by saying "Oh my frog" instead of "Oh my [=StarClan=]".
* TheUnfavorite: In Chapter 8, she mentions that her mother Webnose seems to love her brother Blazepaw more than she loves Hopepaw.
* WaifProphet: She can tell who will die due to the Winds of Death. And she's a kit.

!!Sunstorm

[=ThunderClan=]'s medicine cat. Despite his undying loyalty to his own Clan, he cares for all the Clans, protecting them for hardship.

* AwesomeMcCoolname: Tidepaw even goes on a rant about it.
* CelibateHero: As a medicine cat, he can never take a mate.
* DeadpanSnarker: He's both polite and sarcastic at the same time.
* HeroicSacrifice: Proposes that he could make one by giving himself up to Bonetail in exchange for the freedom of the other medicine cats.
* TheMedic: He's one of [=ThunderClan=]'s Medicine Cats.
* MysteriousPast: He claims that there's quite a story behind his name, but he never elaborates. In Chapter 5, he's revealed to be a former kittypet. This probably has something to do with it.
* NiceGuy: He brings herbs to [=WindClan=] simply because he thinks they might need them.
* [[RedHeadedHero Red Furred Hero]]: He has ginger fur, and he's very heroic.

!!Lightningblaze
->"Must you always be so theatrical?"

A grumpy [=ThunderClan=] warrior. Many Clan cats believe that her murdered [=ThunderClan=]'s former deputy Whisperwing so that his niece Sandstone could be deputy.

* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: He may be prickly, but he does agree to share herbs with [=WindClan=], and Leafkit notices that he is surprisingly soft around Snowcloud.
* OnlySaneMan: He's bothered by the antics of the other cats.

!!Hazelfrost
->"Your Clan of traitors and murderers can collapse on itself. And then, you'll die just like everyone else."

A violently insane she-cat who was formerly a member of [=ThunderClan=]. After attempting to kill Sandstone, [=ThunderClan=]'s deputy, she fled to the mountains. She's working with Arise, but WordOfGod states that she is not The Deliverer.

* ADayInTheLimelight: Interlude 1 is about her failed attempt to kill the [=ThunderClan=] deputy Sandstone.
* AxCrazy: She's crazy, and violent, especially when she attacks Sandstone.
* BrokenPedestal: She decided that she hated Jaytalon after he refused to let her kill Sandstone.
* ChekhovsGunman: She seems like a random minor character in Chapter 6, but then Interlude 1 reveals that she's working for Arise.
* TheCuckoolanderWasRight: At first, she seems insane when she says that Sandstone killed her mother. Then it turns out to be true.
* DarkSecret: She killed her brother.
* HearingVoices: She hears many voices talking to her. Some, like Whisperwing, are imaginary, but she also hears the voice of Arise.
* {{Revenge}}: She spends most of Interlude 1 ranting about taking revenge on Sandstone.
* TheRunaway: She flees [=ThunderClan=] at the end of Interlude 1.
* [[YouKilledMyFather You Killed My Mother]]: The reason she wants to kill Sandstone is because she has been led to believe that Sandstone murdered her mother, Goldenfoot. Then it turns out that it's true.

[=ThunderClan=]'s leader. He's significantly less important than the other Clan leaders.

* TheLeader: He's [=ThunderClan=]'s leader.
* MinorMajorCharacter: He's a Clan leader, but he only has a single line so far. In Chapter 5, he gets a second line, and that's all.

There's more to him than he lets on, but only Snowcloud has tried to figure out his motives.

* AttackOfTheTownFestival: He crashes the Gathering in Chapter 2 so that he can give the Clans a demonstration of his rogue army.
* BigBad: At least for the beginning of the story. He had a personal connection to Darkclaw and his rogue army was a major threat to the Clans, but he was taken care of in Chapter 8.
* DiscardAndDraw: He throws his battle against Moorwhisker's patrol so that he can take the Clans by surprise at the Gathering.
* DiscOneFinalBoss: Appears to be the BigBad, or part of a BigBadEnsemble with the Watcher. Then he dies in Chapter 8.
* EvilMentor: He was Darkclaw's mentor before he betrayed the Clans. Darkclaw hates him because of this, and wants to be the one to defeat/kill him.

* TheMedic: Although she wasn't a medicine cat during her time with [=WindClan=], she has enough knowledge of herbs to aid Bonetail and his rogues.
