Played straight in that the swamps of the Neck are very dangerous to outsiders and, combined with the fact that the isthmus is a natural choke point to begin with, have served as a very effective buffer against invasion from the south for centuries. In the Histories & Lore videos, Jon Snow says that the Neck is nearly as effective a barrier as the Wall itself on the other side of the North. The swamps are impassable by large armies, filled with quicksand, disease-carrying insects, and "Lizard-lions" (huge crocodiles of some kind). House Reed and their crannogmen ambush outsiders using poisoned arrows. Even the ironborn who managed to take Moat Cailin from its undefended northern side, as we see at the end of Season 4, are being bled very badly by attrition from the surrounding crannogmen. * AffectionateNickname: Little Grandfather; according to Creator/EllieKendrick in the "New Characters" video.
* AgeLift: A lesser one to keep up with all the rest of the characters. He looks older than 13, his age in the books, though he is described as looking and acting more mature than his actual age.
* BigBrotherInstinct: He's the younger child but the minute Karl and his friends threaten to hurt and rape his sister, Jojen gets very, very scary.
* CreepyChild: He appears to be this at first. Subverted when it turns out that he's actually a nice kid. He can invoke this to threatening effect though, like when he intimidates Karl Tanner right as he's about to rape his sister Meera.
* DeathByAdaptation: Is mortally wounded by Wights, and mercy killed by Meera when they reach the Three Eyed Raven's tree.
* DisabilitySuperpower: Apparently, having repeated visions causes seizures. [[labelnote:From the books...]]Jojen does not suffer seizures, but his knowledge of the future has caused him to have a weary, depressive demeanor.[[/labelnote]]
* DreamSpying: He saw Ned's execution in a dream.
* FaintingSeer: His visions seem to take a very heavy physical toll on him, and so he frequently faints or has seizures.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: Introducing himself into Bran's dream.

* IconicSequelCharacter: Does not appear in the series until Season 3.
* IllBoy: He gets noticeably pale, weaker and clammier as he and Meera journey north of the Wall with Bran, and his seizures become more prolific as well.
* LickedByTheDog: The first sign that he is a good guy is that the very aggressive and protective Summer refuses to attack him.
* MrExposition: He explains Bran's powers in his second scene. After two whole seasons went with little to no explanation.

* NervesOfSteel: Granted, he knows his sister is close by and has his back, but Jojen never loses his affable tone even when Osha has a spear to his neck - and a full-grown direwolf is baring its teeth at the same time.
* NiceGuy: While at first glance a CreepyChild, Jojen quickly shows himself to be a friendly and down to earth kid, if a bit mysterious thanks to also being a [[PsychicChildren Psychic Child]].
* NonActionGuy: He's perfectly comfortable admitting his sister is the better fighter.
* TheOmniscient: As an experienced greenseer, he can see things happening far away, in the future or the distant past, and can sneak into other people's dreams.
* PsychicChildren: Like Bran, he's a greenseer. But not a warg.
* PsychicLink: The first time Bran sees Jojen is in a dream. He later confirms that he introduced himself in the dream on purpose. The way he made Summer trust him and go away might also have been this.
* SlasherSmile: Gives an awesome one to Karl, when he tells him that he's seen his future and his very imminent death.
* WaifProphet: He's a frail young man with the ability to see the future.
* WiseBeyondTheirYears: Despite appearing to only be a few years older than Bran, he's the first character to actually have some idea as to what Bran's dreams are.

* ItsAllAboutMe: He complains about Jon Snow letting the Wildlings south of the Wall and settling at the Gift, land that legally belongs to the Watch, yet they, and most Northern houses, did ''nothing'' to help the Watch when they truly needed help. He, and other Northern houses, didn't respond to Maester Aemon's call for aid against the White Walkers and Mance Rayder, nor did they respond once the previous season after Lord Commander Jon Snow sent many letters calling for men and supplies, and now have the nerve to complain about Jon Snow making the best of his understaffed and undersupplied situation.

* PsychicChildren: Like Bran, he's a greenseer. But not a warg.
* PsychicLink: The first time Bran sees Jojen is in a dream. He later confirms that he introduced himself in the dream on purpose. The way he made Summer trust him and go away might also have been this.
* SlasherSmile: Gives an awesome one to Karl,
this when he tells him [[spoiler: betrays Rickon to Ramsay.]]
* JerkassHasAPoint:

* KickTheDog: Killing Shaggy, Rickon's Direwolf. Handing over Osha, when she serves little value as a hostage unlike Rickon, also falls under this category.

The daughter of Howland Reed. Meera protects her brother and Bran as they travel the North.

* ActionGirl: She is introduced by getting the drop [[TheWorfEffect on Osha]], which is no easy task. She also seems to be the reason why her brother has been able to survive in the North, which has become a rather dangerous place since the war started.
* AdaptationDyeJob: From the red-brown of the books to Ellie Kendrick's natural black.
* AgeLift: A lesser one to keep up with all the rest of the characters. In the show, she's implied to be closer in age to Bran and Jojen, but even in the books she looks younger than her actual age due to her being a Crannogman, who are small people in general.
* TheArcher: Instead of keeping a trident like her books counterpart, though [[spoiler: one dead White Walker speaks to her skill with a throwing spear, which is a bit closer in spirit.]]
* BadassNormal: She's not a giant wolf like Summer, doesn't have SuperStrength like Hodor, and doesn't have supernatural abilities like Bran [[spoiler: or Benjen but one-shotting a ''White Walker'' definitely makes you one.]]
* BigSisterInstinct: She's fiercely protective of her younger brother.
* CoolBigSister: When Osha asks her if she's ashamed by the fact her brother is a NonActionGuy, she just laughs at the question, stating that there is no shame in wanting to protect someone. Not only that but she obviously adores her little brother. This also crosses with shades of BigSisterInstinct.
* DespairEventHorizon: [[spoiler:She's at her wit's end when the wights finally catch up with her and Bran after they barely escape the Three-Eyed Raven's cave. * QuirkyCurls: Her hairstyle. Karl Tanner even compliments her (in a not so flattering manner) for it.
* ShipTease: With Bran since about Season 4.
* SitcomArchnemesis: To Osha, who quickly grows jealous of Meera.
* TraumaCongaLine: In season 4. She has to deal with Jojen's increasingly bad health, getting captured by the Night's Watch mutineers and [[NearRapeExperience almost gang-raped]], and then she's forced to kill her beloved younger brother, who's been mortally wounded. [[FromBadToWorse "The Door" keeps on carrying the torch]], as Meera is forced to watch as [[spoiler: the Children of the Forest, Summer, the Three-Eyed Raven, and finally Hodor are all slain by the White Walkers]]. To twist the knife just a bit further, [[spoiler: Meera turns out to be unwittingly complicit in Bran's accidental MindRape of young Hodor]]. Unsurprisingly, the weight finally gets to be too much to bear in the next episode: [[spoiler: when it looks like all hope is finally lost and the wight horde is about to be the end of the two of them despite Hodor's sacrifice, Meera pulls Bran into a shielding hug and just ''sobs.'' Lady Maege's daughter, the new Lady
of Rickard Karstark's sons. Killed by Jaime Lannister during his escape attempt.Bear Island and head of House Mormont, presently a girl of ten.

* AscendedExtra: From throwaway PosthumousCharacter in the books to actually appearing and having lines in one episode.
* PragmaticAdaptation: Instead of as a casualty of battle, TV!Torrhen is assigned to guard Jaime during his captivity and is killed by him during an escape attempt. This makes Karstark's obsession with killing Jaime more understandable than in the books.
* RedShirt: Gets no characterization before being killed.
* SparedByTheAdaptation: Only for a while. He survives farther into the storyline than his book counterpart, who dies in the Battle of the Whispering Wood protecting Robb from Jaime.

to:

* AChildShallLeadThem: Upon the death of her mother during Robb Stark's campaign, she became the head of her house.
* AloofDarkHairedGirl: She's very blunt and full of sass at her young age.
* AscendedExtra: From throwaway PosthumousCharacter An unseen character mentioned in a single anecdote in the novels, in the show she is made the Lady of Bear Island and appears in person, even accompanying the Starks into the field.
* BadassAdorable: She may be young, but the girl knows how to hold her own against older men in debates.
* BreakoutCharacter: She quickly becomes one of the most popular characters on the show after only appearing in three episodes, and in one of those, she doesn't even have any lines, only a withering DeathGlare of utter contempt for Ramsay.
* BrutalHonesty: Lyanna is not one for softening her words or the reality of the situation. The Starks didn't come to reminiscence, they came for her soldiers, no point wasting time chatting. Jon's a bastard and Sansa's been married twice, making neither an actual Stark. And if they want her to send what little men she has into yet another battle for the Starks, then they had best give her a damn good reason. She's honest towards herself too: when Sansa tries to compliment her by saying that she'll grow up to be a great beauty, Lyanna responds: "I doubt it. My mother wasn't a great beauty or any other kind of beauty."
* ChekhovsGunman: She's first mentioned by Stannis in Season 5 after she wrote him a letter that rejects her house taking up arms for him before becoming an integral part of the Stark restoration in Season 6.
* CommonalityConnection: How Davos persuades her, as both know what it is to suddenly be in charge of a position they never expected to have.
* CompositeCharacter: While Lyanna writes the letter to Stannis
in the books as well, the show version seems to combine aspects of Wyman Manderly's granddaughter, Wylla, with her wanting to fight in the name of House Stark odds be damned and her capacity for badass speeches. She's also basically a condensation of all four of Maege's younger daughters from the novel into a single character.
* DeadGuyJunior: Discussed when Sansa attempts, largely in vain, to instigate some small talk by mentioning the young Lady Mormont was specifically named for her late aunt, Lyanna Stark.
* DeathGlare: Fixes one on Ramsay during the entire meet between she and the rest of the lords sworn to House Stark, and Bolton's men.
* DefrostingIceQueen: Despite their rough introduction, she eventually mellows down to Jon and Sansa. [[spoiler: She even nominates Jon as the new King in the North, which he won.]]
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: Even before the viewers get to see her, her blunt nature (for her age) is established in her letter to Stannis, refusing to support him or any other king who isn't a Stark of Winterfell. In her first appearance, she brushes off any attempts at smooth talk and flattery by Jon and Sansa and dominates the scene with her presence in spite of being a little girl.
* ExactWords: Lyanna pledges loyalty to the Starks but not to Sansa who is technically both a Lannister and a Bolton nor to Jon who is illegitimate. This changes after the battle, as she is the first to name Jon, King in the North.
* {{Foil}}: Take a minute to compare this girl with Tommen Baratheon and Robin Arryn. Tommen and Robin have access to far more soldiers and hold far more power, furthermore they are male and expected to be badass, yet both are weak-willed puppets lacking any form of autonomy or guts. Lyanna is a girl with very few men and younger than both, but determined, wise beyond her years, clearly in charge and tough as nails. She is also a lot like Bran when he ruled Winterfell but unlike Bran who had vassals to protect she only has to protect her own.
* FrontlineGeneral: She accompanies her men to Jon Snow's camp, putting herself at considerable risk.
* HatesSmallTalk: She quickly shuts down the admittedly poor attempts at small talk and flattery during her meeting with Sansa and Jon. She'd rather just get to the point. Even her initial greeting ends so abruptly that it catches her guests unaware.
--> '''Lyanna:''' I think we've had enough small talk. Why are you here?
* IceQueen: She's a no-nonsense character and her frank nature are intimidating. Appropriately enough, her House's eat is called the Bay of Ice.
* IconicSequelCharacter: Does not appear in the series until Season 6.
* IronLady: She's a [[TheStoic stoic]], determined, brave and no-nonsense leader despite her very young age.
* JerkassHasAPoint: Her attitude is harsh but it's not incorrect. A bastard and a twice married lady arrive requesting she aid them in another war for the Starks, even though neither are technically members of that house. Loyalty is not reason enough to risk losing everything.
* LittleMissBadass: Despite her age, Lady Lyanna Mormont proves to be just as fierce in person as her written words to Stannis indicated. This is a girl who can shame an entire room full of men three times her size and age.
* LittleMissSnarker: She's full of sass.
* OneSteveLimit: A rare aversion for the TV show, which otherwise went out of its way to ''enforce'' a One Steve Limit onto the source material, i.e. "Robert Arryn" was changed to "Robin Arryn". The showrunners argued, with some validity, that while the long books could get away with multiple characters with the same first name, it would have been too confusing in the more condensed format of a TV series. Lyanna Mormont was a rare exception, because it's a plot point that she's a DeadGuyJunior, named after Lyanna Stark.
* OutsideContextProblem: Ser Davos wins her support by affirming their true enemy is the Night King and the real war is between the living and the dead. The Boltons divide the North and the Northern houses will [[DividedWeFall fall]] if they are allowed to remain in power. Faced with long odds against the Boltons versus no chance against the White Walkers, Lyanna opts to take her chances fighting alongside the Starks.
* QualityOverQuantity: Although the force she can offer is small, she claims that each of her warriors are worth ten mainlanders (evocative of House Mormont's sigil animal; a [[BearsAreBadNews bear]]). Considering how badass Northern soldiers have generally been portrayed when fighting larger southern forces, this is quite the BadassBoast. This isn't an idle boast, either. As explained in the novels, the Bear Island is off the northwest coast of the North, so they're ''constantly'' fighting off not only wildling raids (in small fishing ships) but heavy raids from the ironborn coming up from the south. Thus they have very strong martial traditions -- look at how tough Jeor was and Jorah still is -- and they also had to train even their daughters to be warriors (to survive while the men are out at sea in fishing ships).
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: Most of her decisions are taken with advice of her maester and sentinel but she also know when it's her call. Even though she is loyal to the Stark she won't throw her men in battle without more convincing arguments and does not ask any large compensation from the Stark when she sides withe them as they are her liege.
* RefugeInAudacity: As contrary as it may seem, her honesty and bluntness are
actually appearing even more effective coming from the mouth of a ten-year-old girl than they might be from an adult.
* ShamingTheMob: At the gathering in Winterfell following the retaking, she firmly reminds the other Northern houses lords that they didn't do anything to help the Starks after the Red Wedding
and having after said houses were betrayed by the Boltons and Freys. Lord Manderly admits she's right.
* TheSmurfettePrinciple: Lyanna Mormont is literally the ''only'' head of a major Northern House shown to be female, even during their war council in the Season 6 finale. In the books, at least four Houses are headed by women at this point (due to all the men dying in the war). Notably, in that same war council scene, "Lord Cerwyn" appears - in the books, House Cerwyn is headed by a ''woman'' at this point, because Ramsay killed her father and brother. The TV series actively gender-swapped female leaders into male ones - possibly to showcase Lyanna as "exceptional" (when in the books, female rulers are fairly commonplace).
** Lyanna Mormont is literally the ''only'' female head of a major vassal House (not one of the Great Houses like the Tyrells or Lannisters) who has appeared in the first six TV seasons that is both a recurring role and has speaking lines. She's also only the ''second'' female head of a major noble House to have speaking
lines - the first was Anya Waynwood in Season 4, who only appeared in one episode.
episode. Even though Lyanna's mother Maege did appear on-screen in Season 1, she didn't have any speaking lines nor was she identified in dialogue (it was really just a cameo).
* PragmaticAdaptation: Instead of as a casualty of battle, TV!Torrhen is assigned TheStoic: Past her DeathGlare to guard Jaime during his captivity Ramsay Bolton, she shows very little emotions.
* UndyingLoyalty: She lets Stannis know in no uncertain terms that House Mormont will only follow House Stark. When Jon
and is killed by him during an escape attempt. This makes Karstark's obsession Sansa call upon her to aid them against the Boltons, Lyanna eventually decides to uphold their millennia old alliance and fight with killing Jaime more understandable than in them once again. Once the books.
* RedShirt: Gets no characterization before
Stark alliance reclaims Winterfell, her [[TheReasonYouSuckSpeech scathing words]] shame all the other northern lords, many of which did not answer the Starks' call, and then she becomes Jon's kingmaker. Despite being killed.
* SparedByTheAdaptation: Only for
unable to devote not even a while. He survives farther into the storyline than his book counterpart, who dies in hundred troops to the Battle of the Whispering Wood protecting Robb from Jaime.Bastards, she turned out to be by far the most valuable ally that Jon and Sansa recruited.
--> '''Lyanna:''' House Mormont has kept faith with House Stark for a thousand years. We will not break faith today.
* WhenSheSmiles: Despite introducing herself as a [[IceQueen no-nonsense]] LittleMissSnarker, she looks adorable while smiling during [[spoiler: Jon's AwesomeMomentOfCrowning]] (which ''she'' initiated).
* WiseBeyondTheirYears: The young Lady Lyanna is quick to point out the many flaws with a Stark/Mormont alliance without even bothering to consult her advisers. Jon isn't actually a Stark but a Snow and Sansa is a Lannister or a Bolton (depending on the source). She then rather bluntly asks why should she risk Mormont soldiers for a Stark, especially after the losses they suffered last time around. It's only when Ser Davos gives a rather sobering account of the real threat, the undead hordes, she agrees to help.
--> '''Lyanna:''' Why should I have to risk one more Mormont life for someone else's war?
* YoungAndInCharge: Lady Lyanna is now the leader of House Mormont despite being a child. Judging by how she handles the room and her own advisor during her meeting with the Stark leadership, she certainly seems to have the disposition for it.

* DeathByAdaptation: In the books Harrion is captured at the Battle of the Green Fork, imprisoned at Harrenhal and released when Arya and Jaqen H'ghar liberate the northern prisoners and the Brave Companions turn on Amory Lorch and deliver the castle to Lord Bolton. In the novels, Rickard has three sons and two of them die, one of which is named "Eddard Karstark" after Eddard Stark. Given the TV series's reluctance to use the books' ''intentional'' aversion of the OneSteveLimit rule, because they thought the audience would be confused, they swapped Eddard Karstark's death with Harrion - though whether "Eddard Karstark" will take his brother's place from the storyline in later novels, or if he will be renamed, or simply be Adapted Out, is anyone's guess.

* MajorInjuryUnderreaction: He reacts with good cheer after a direwolf eats two of his fingers.
* ModestRoyalty: A nice touch of it in Season 1. After Catelyn Stark reunites with the Northern army and the other nobles are dismissed to give her and Robb a few moments alone, he throws an arm around Ser Rodrik Cassel and leads him away with a "Rodrik, you old dog!", and Rodrik responds in kind. As was said, it's a nice touch to see one
end of the greatest lords sixth season, but after Lady Mormont declared her endorsement of [[spoiler: Jon Snow as King in The North]], his agreement is what catalyzes the North on a first name basis with a lowly knight, making him come across as far less formal and more approachable than, say, Lord Eddard.
* NoIndoorVoice: Shouts most of his dialogue.
* PutOnABus: Doesn't appear in Season 2, neither does he appear in Season 3 onward, either. Justified via a Season 2 DVD extra: Robb sent him to liberate the Riverlands while he pushed into the Westerlands.
* SpitefulSpit: His reaction to the proposals of supporting either Stannis' or Renly's claim to the Iron Throne.
* TestosteronePoisoning: His masculinity is portrayed as over the top. Most notable is when he's {{Fingore}}'d by Grey Wind, where he immediately pledge support for Robb despite disagreeing with him earlier.
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: In Season 2 we at least know he's waging war in the Riverlands, but there's been no word on his fate following the Red Wedding. By season 6 it appears he died somehow. Clive Mantle apparently had serious difficulties meeting the show's schedule, until they finally just killed him offscreen.

->'''Played By:''' Bella Ramsey

-> ''"Bear Island knows no king but the King in the North, whose name is Stark."''

Lady Maege's daughter, the new Lady of Bear Island and head of House Mormont, presently a girl of ten.
----
* AChildShallLeadThem: Upon the death of her mother during Robb Stark's campaign, she became the head of her house.
* AloofDarkHairedGirl: She's very blunt and full of sass at her young age.
* AscendedExtra: An unseen character mentioned in a single anecdote in the novels, in the show she is made the Lady of Bear Island and appears in person, even accompanying the Starks into the field.
* CompositeCharacter: While Lyanna writes the letter to Stannis in the books as well, the show version seems to combine aspects of Wyman Manderly's granddaughter, Wylla, with her wanting to fight in the name of House Stark odds be damned and her capacity for badass speeches.
* RefugeInAudacity: As contrary as it may seem, her honesty and bluntness are actually even more effective coming from the mouth of a ten-year-old girl than they might be from an adult.
* ShamingTheMob: At the gathering in Winterfell following the retaking, she firmly reminds the other Northern houses lords that they didn't do anything to help the Starks after the Red Wedding and after said houses were betrayed by the Boltons and Freys.
She's also only the ''second'' female head of a major noble House to have speaking lines - the first was Anya Waynwood in Season 4, who only appeared in one episode. Even though Lyanna's mother Maege did appear on-screen in Season 1, she didn't have any speaking lines nor was she identified in dialogue (it was really just a cameo).
* TheStoic: Past her DeathGlare to Ramsay Bolton, she shows very little emotions.
* UndyingLoyalty: She lets Stannis know in no uncertain terms that House Mormont will only follow House Stark. When Jon and Sansa call upon her to aid them against the Boltons, Lyanna eventually decides to uphold their millennia old alliance and fight with them once again. Once the Stark alliance reclaims Winterfell, her [[TheReasonYouSuckSpeech scathing words]] shame all the other northern lords, many of which did not answer the Starks' call, and then she becomes Jon's kingmaker. Despite being unable to devote not even a hundred troops to the Battle of the Bastards, she turned out to be by far the most valuable ally that Jon and Sansa recruited.

->'''Played By:''' Bella Ramsey

* CompositeCharacter: While Lyanna writes the letter to Stannis in the books as well, the show version seems to combine aspects of Wyman Manderly's granddaughter, Wylla, with her wanting to fight in the name of House Stark odds be damned and her capacity for badass speeches.
[[folder:House Forrester]]

! House Glover

-> '''Greatjon Umber:''' ''"The bloody Wall will melt before an Umber marches behind a Glover!"''

Another Stark vassal house. Their lands are in the middle of the North's western coastline, including substantial parts of the Wolfswood, and their stronghold is Deepwood Motte.

[[folder:In General]]

* AllYourBaseAreBelongToUs: The Ironborn took their castle during the events of Seasons 2-4.
* PowerFist: Their sigil is an armored fist.
* UndyingLoyalty: To House Stark until Lord Robett's reign. Following the restoration of House Stark after the second battle of Winterfell, Lord Robett reaffirms their loyalty.

->'''Played By:''' Mark Coney

->''"Renly is not right!"''

Lord of Deepwood Motte and head of House Glover.
----
* AlliterativeName: '''G'''albart '''G'''lover.
* BadassBeard: He is chosen to command Robb's vanguard over The Greatjon.
* BusCrash: He hasn't been seen since the end of the first season. His brother confirmed that he died during the Robb's campaign.
* DeathByAdaptation: He is still presumably alive in the books. [[labelnote:From the books...]]He is sent on mission along with Maege Mormont to find Howland Reed, but he hasn't been heard ever since.[[/labelnote]]

[[folder:Lord Robett Glover]]
->'''Played By:''' Tim [=McInnery=]

->''"House Glover will not abandon its ancestral home to fight alongside '''wildlings'''!"''

The younger brother of Galbart Glover, and the new Lord of Deepwood Motte and head of House Glover.
----
* AdaptationalVillainy: He helps Wyman Manderley take down House Bolton from the very start in the books, and- so far as we know- isn't bigoted against the Wildlings.
* TheAtoner: He is clearly regretful of not having supported House Stark before, so he seeks to make amends for it.
* BrutalHonesty: Doesn't hide his bitterness about Robb's mistakes.
* DespairEventHorizon: The death of his family and men seems to have broken Robett. But he snaps out of it when Jon Snow retakes Winterfell.
* FantasticRacism: He refuses to aid Jon and Sansa's campaign to retake the North, partly because the majority of their fighting force is made up of wildlings. He also refers to Queen Talisa as a "foreign whore".
* GutturalGrowler: Has a raspy and intimidating voice.
* HeelFaceTurn: After Jon [[spoiler: wins the Battle of the Bastards,]] Robett joins him.
* IOweYouMyLife: Another reason he did not join the Stark restoration army is because it was the Boltons that helped them liberate their lands from the Ironborn.
* JadeColoredGlasses: His faith on House Stark was severely crushed by Robb's failures and downfall.
* JerkassHasAPoint: He has already lost many men, his brother and his castle in service to Robb Stark, who made some terrible strategic mistakes in his war campaign. It's understandable why he refuses to lend more troops. He even brings up that it's the Boltons and not the Starks that gave him back his castle.
* ShellShockedVeteran: It's clear the loss of life during the war and the Red Wedding left Robett broken.
* SpeakIllOfTheDead: Bitterly reminisces about King Robb's shortcomings and calls Queen Talisa a "foreign whore".
* TookALevelInKindness: [[spoiler:After House Bolton's defeat, he states he regrets not helping Jon Snow and House Stark in their greatest hour of need. He asks for forgiveness, and Jon Snow tells him that there is nothing to forgive. Afterwards, he along with other Northerners declare Jon Snow the new King of the North.]]
* UndyingLoyalty: Averted. Despite his house's famous loyalty to the Starks, he refuses to be dragged into a war he doesn't believe can be won. When the Boltons are ousted, he reaffirms his loyalty to House Stark and to Jon Snow.

! House Manderly

One of the largest Northern houses, and in charge of the city of White Harbor, with a seat in the New Castle.

[[folder:In General]]
* BadassBeard: Their sigil is a battling merman with a beard.
* TheGhost: Repeatedly said to be one of the largest Northern houses after the Boltons, along with the Umbers and Karstarks, but don't appear. Wyman Manderly finally shows up in ''The Winds of Winter''.
* ProngsOfPoseidon: Their sigil is a merman wielding a trident.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Lord Wyman Manderly]]
->'''Played By:''' Sean Blowers

The Lord of White Harbor and head of House Manderly.
----
* AdaptationalAttractiveness: His book counterpart is know for his extreme obessity, and is repeatedly said to be incapable of sitting a horse. He's still a stout fellow, but hardly much more so than Yohn Royce or Rodrick Cassel.
* AdaptationalWimp: He's a PayEvilUntoEvil [[TheChessmaster chessmaster]] in the books. On the show, he sits out the battle of Winterfell for fear of loosing Manderly men for nothing.
* ChekhovsGunman: House Manderly is often mentioned as one of the big Houses in the North (Bolton, Karstark, Umber and Manderly), but they're suspiciously absent from the Battle of the Bastards. Wyman proceeds to show up and commit his men to Jon Snow's cause after it, also kickstarting his crowning.
* DemotedToExtra: In the books he's an architect of a vast conspiracy in the North to undermine the Boltons and Freys and restore the Starks to power. In here he sits out the battle of the bastards and only ever appears after Jon and Sansa have reclaimed Winterfell.
* NeutralNoLonger: Wyman stood out of the war in the North to avoid the loss of life by his men. By the end of the season, he is now firmly a follower of House Stark.
* TheNicknamer: He names Jon Snow "the White Wolf".
* OutlivingOnesOffspring: His son and heir was butchered at the Red Wedding.
* SmallRoleBigImpact: He shows up for about one short scene at the end of the sixth season, but after Lady Mormont declared her endorsement of [[spoiler: Jon Snow as King in The North]], his agreement is what catalyzes the motion.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Ser Wendel Manderly]]
->'''Played By:''' Oddie Braddell

A son of Lord Wyman Manderly, who accompanies Robb to the war.
----
* DemotedToExtra: He only appears in one episode and has no lines. The only way the audience would know he was an important Northerner without knowing his backstory in the books would be because he's positioned very close to Robb Stark and Roose Bolton during Edmure's wedding, the camera kind of lingers on him whenever he's onscreen and that he's wearing a big House Manderly trident-armed merman sigil brooch.
* EarlyBirdCameo: Not for himself, of course, since he dies in the same episode in which he's introduced, but his appearance could count as this for House Manderly, who play a large role in one of the later books in the series and would be hard to adapt out.
* SpearCarrier: Played by an established actor, but has no lines or discernible role other than introduce his House.

! House Cerwyn

A Northern house sworn to the Starks, with its seat at Castle Cerwyn, close to Winterfell.

[[folder: In General]]
* AnAxeToGrind: Their sigil is a war-axe.
* BadassBoast: According to supplementary material, their motto is "Honed and Ready".
* GenderFlip: House Cerwyn was actually headed by a ''woman'' at this point in the novels, Jonelle Cerwyn, after the Boltons killed her father and brother. The TV version omitted Jonelle and kept her brother alive - actually part of a pattern of gender-swapping minor background vassals from female to male.
* ItIsPronouncedTroPAY: It's pronounced ''K''erwyn, not ''S''erwyn.
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot: When Ramsay proudly recounts how he flayed Lord Cerwyn alive in Season 5, Roose berates him for his stupidity, pointing out that while it ensured their submission for the moment, in the long term he just gained the Cerwyn's lasting enmity and they will jump at the next chance to rebel against the Boltons. Then when the actual uprising against Ramsay occurred in Season 6, the Cerwyns were nowhere to be seen - ''even when'' Jon Snow pointed out that Ramsay's men only follow him out of fear and will turn on him when he is weak.
* UndyingLoyalty: They stand behind the Starks when the Boltons take the North. Unfortunately, this causes the death of the entire House except one heir.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Lord Cley Cerwyn]]
->'''Played By:''' Tom Varrey

The young and inexperienced new Lord of Cerwyn and head of House Cerwyn.

----
* AlliterativeName: '''C'''ley '''C'''erwin.
* AnOfferYouCantRefuse: He swore fealty to House Bolton when Ramsay flayed his entire family and threatened to do the same to him.
* ChekhovsGunman: Cley Cerwyn was mentioned in season 5 as the current Lord of the (Stark-loyal but forced to serve the Boltons under threat of flaying). In season 6 he shows up to support the Starks.
* SoleSurvivor: Of House Cerwyn. Ramsay flayed all the other members.
* SparedByTheAdaptation: In the books he died trying to reclaim Winterfell with Rodrik. In the show he's still around years after that.
* UndyingLoyalty: He only kneeled to the Boltons [[AnOfferYouCantRefuse under direct threat]]. When that passes, he's a proud bannerman to House Stark again.
* WrongGenreSavvy: Cley believes with the Bolton dead the threat is passed, now they just have to survive winter. Jon Snow reminds him that the White Walkers are on their way.
* YoungAndInCharge: When we see him, he seems barely out of his teens, but leading House Cerwyn.

! Other Stark Bannermen

[[folder:House Mazin]]

A Northern house that joins Jon and Sansa's cause with 143 men.
----
* CanonForeigner: They have no book counterpart.
* EarlyBirdCameo: First mentioned in a [[Recap/GameOfThronesS5E4TheSonsOfTheHarpy season 5 episode]].
* ShoutOut: The house is named after Craig Mazin, a screenwriter and friend of the showrunners.
* UndyingLoyalty: Small though they are, they still join the remnants of House Stark.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:House Hornwood]]

A Northern house that joins Jon and Sansa's cause with two hundred men.
----
* BadassBoast: Master Luwin tells Bran back in season 1 that their motto is "Righteous In Wrath", which is pretty foreboding.
* BadassCreed: "Righteous In Wrath" turns out to be true. They're one of the two Houses in "righteous wrath" for the Stark's death who rises against the Boltons.
* SparedByTheAdaptation: In the books, the last legitimate Hornwoods die during Robb's initial campaign in the Riverlands and the widowed Lady Hornwood meets a gruesome end at Ramsay's hands. In the show, the house is still around.
* UndyingLoyalty: Small though they are, they still join the remnants of House Stark.

**Lyanna Mormont is literally the ''only'' female head of a major vassal House (not one of the Great Houses like the Tyrells or Lannisters) who has appeared in the first six TV seasons that is both a recurring role and has speaking lines.

Added DiffLines:

* OneSteveLimit: A rare aversion for the TV show, which otherwise went out of its way to ''enforce'' a One Steve Limit onto the source material, i.e. "Robert Arryn" was changed to "Robin Arryn". The showrunners argued, with some validity, that while the long books could get away with multiple characters with the same first name, it would have been too confusing in the more condensed format of a TV series. Lyanna Mormont was a rare exception, because it's a plot point that she's a DeadGuyJunior, named after Lyanna Stark.
