Royd is an OCU commander and the protagonist for the OCU scenario. His fiancee, Karen Meure, had become part of his unit in the early events of the story. During the investigation of the USN (a.k.a. After being discharged from the military, he at first had no intent on returning. An OCU colonel named Olson, however, managed to recruit him using the promise of avenging Karen's death. Kevin was born in USN North America to a military family, as his father was a former Lieutenant Colonel in the USN Army Kevin enlisted at the age of 18 and graduated from a top military academy before applying to join the Black Hounds, an elite USN special forces unit. Based partly on his his own achievements and partly on his fathers reputation, Kevin was accepted as Black Hounds B-team platoon leader. Soon after passing the qualification test, Kevin met and quickly fell in love with fellow Black Hounds member Maria Paredes.

After an incident during a mission caused the unit to fail to capture the leader of the "Star of Freedom" terrorist group, Kevin and his squad mates, Johnny Sanders and Matthew Lorenzo, lost their positions in the Black Hounds. Kevin was nearly court-martialed, but due to the rising tensions between the USN and OCU during the lead up to the Second Huffman Conflict, he was sent to the Nirvana Institute under the command of Driscoll. A mutual dislike soon began between the two due to their opposing personalities, but they begrudgingly worked together for a time.

!!Protagonists

[[folder:Royd Clive]]
!!Royd Clive

Royd is an OCU commander and the protagonist for the OCU scenario. His fiancee, Karen Meure, had become part of his unit in the early events of the story. During the investigation of the USN (a.k.a. UCS) munition plant, Karen rushed ahead in her spying, only to be met by an ambush and [[spoiler: (apparently)]] killed by the infamous Driscoll. Ever since then, Royd had been mentally unstable and moody, a cross between an [[RevengeBeforeReason unforgiving blood-avenger]] (toward Karen's killer) and [[ItsAllMyFault hard on himself]] for [[spoiler: supposedly]] destroying the treaty between the great powers. After being discharged from the military, he at first had no intent on returning. An OCU colonel named Olson, however, managed to recruit him using the promise of avenging Karen's death. Royd is now the commander of the unit "Canyon Crows".
----
* TheAce: He's specifically chosen to lead the Canyon Crows because he's a superb commander and fighter. Under his command, Canyon Crows did indeed end up playing a major role in OCU's successful counter attack. On the gameplay side of things, he's the only pilot in the OCU scenario to be [[MasterOfAll good at every job class]].
* AmbiguousDisorder: It's never been explicitly stated in the games, but Royd seemed to be suffering from depression since the Larcus Incident. He regularly showed a lack of motivation and interests in things, e.g., responding to others' requests to join the Canyon Crows with an apathetic "do what you want". At one point, he even urged Molly (whose town was destroyed by the war) to kill him - indicating potential suicidality.
* AnimalMotifs: Crow. He once went by the codename "Crow", and for most of ''1st'', he led a squad whose emblem is a crow. Oddly, his wanzer was named "Shrike" instead.
* AwesomeAussie: An Anglo-Australian who's an exceptionally good military commander and soldier.
* BashBrothers: With Ryuji. Ryuji had known Royd before the Second Huffman Conflict, and on the gameplay side of things, Ryuji was the only playable character who's always available for Royd during the entirety of the game, i.e., Natalie, Keith and J.J. were briefly unavailable [[spoiler: between Mission 22 to 24]].
* BrokenBird: He watched his lover killed, [[spoiler: falsely]] believed that he accidentally started a terrible war, was given the hope that his lover wasn't dead only to [[spoiler: learn that she had been turned into [[BrainInAJar B-Type Device]]]], [[spoiler: got falsely labeled as a terrorist by the great powers]], so on and so forth. It actually had pretty bad impacts on his sanity. See WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds below.
* TheDragon: [[spoiler:Eventually became this to the Grimnir after the events of the first Front Mission game.]]
* FreudianTrio: Being primarily motivated by [[RoaringRampageOfRevenge revenge]] for most of ''1st'', Royd was arguably the Id to Ryuji's more realistic Ego and Natalie's "always-follow-the-rules" Superego.
* HomeSweetHome: He and Karen were planning to settle down and start a family. Too bad the plan was stopped short by the war.
* ItsAllMyFault: He blamed himself for messing up during the Larcus Incident and thus starting the Second Huffman Conflict. This got worse as he witnessed the terrible tragedies that had happened during the war, even showing signs of depression and suicidality. [[spoiler: He got better in this regards after Mission 24, where he learnt that the Larcus Incident was just a ploy by the great powers, an excuse for starting the war - which meant the war would have started regardless of his action]].
* TheLeader: To the Canyon Crows.
* MasterOfAll: He's by far the most well-rounded of the playable characters in the Canyon Crows, being very effective whether as a Striker, Assault, or a Missileer. Although somewhat oddly, he's usually depicted as an Assault-class pilot whenever he appeared outside ''1st'', including when he appeared in [[spoiler: the secret mission in ''2'']] or ''5'''s arena.
* RedOniBlueOni: The Red to Ryuji's Blue. Royd can be quite impulsive, which often resulted in Ryuji (rightfully) calling him out.
* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: For most of ''1st'', he's motivated by the desire to avenge Karen, especially during [[spoiler: Mission 24, where [[BigBad Driscoll]] revealed he had turned Karen into a B-Type Device]]. It got worse after the events of ''1st'', as [[spoiler: he eventually turned into a mass-murdering terrorist]].
* TheScapegoat: He was blamed for the Larcus Incident and thus starting the Second Huffman Conflict. [[spoiler: But it wasn't actually his fault, as mentioned in ItsAllMyFault above]].
* ShellShockedVeteran: Increasingly showed signs of being this after the Second Huffman Conflict, seeing what he eventually turned into (See WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds below).
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: His first name is sometimes known as '''Lloyd'''.
* UndyingLoyalty: His heart belongs only to Karen, much to Natalie's dismay.
* [[WeaponOfChoice Wanzer Of Choice]]: Like most OCU main protagonists in the series, Royd is associated with the Zenith wanzer, piloting one during Mission 1 and also his appearance in ''5'''s arena.
* WesternTerrorists: [[spoiler:Firmly this by the time of the epilogue of ''1st'''s OCU scenario when he joins up with Grimnir.]]
* WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds: By the time of the events in ''2'', Royd [[spoiler: has, out of hatred towards the OCU, turned into a mass-murderer who has killed ''civilians'' in his attempt to fight the great power, which ended with him being killed by the Dull Stags. Yes, he had turned into a horrible villain by then, but looking at what he's been through (see BrokenBird above), you'd probably still feel kind of sorry for him]].

[[folder:Kevin Greenfield]]
!!Kevin Greenfield

However, Kevin would only be with Nirvana for a short time, as mobilization for the Second Huffman Conflict began soon after his arrival on Huffman Island. The outbreak of the war led Kevin to leave Nirvana after he and his squad mates were reassigned to USN Colonel Stewart's command, specifically the 112th Special Armored Infantry unit, Silver Lynxes.
----
* TheAce: Kevin was a very capable military commander and wanzer pilot. Under his leadership, the Silver Lynxes ended up playing a major role in the USN's successful capture of Freedom City. On the gameplay side of things, he's the Silver Lynxes' MasterOfAll.
* AnimalMotifs: Lynx. It's what his wanzer is named after and the emblem of the team Kevin led for most of the duration of ''1st'''s USN scenario.
* BenevolentBoss: To his subordinates. It was, however, PlayedWith as Grieg pointed out that Kevin's insistence to do the right thing could sometimes put his subordinates in danger. However, it is precisely his benevolence as a superior that caused Johnny and Matthew to willingly follow him to the Huffman Island and later [[spoiler: the rest of the Silver Lynxes to come along to help when he embarked on his quest to expose the BD Project]].
** Taken UpToEleven in USN Mission 18, in which [[spoiler: Kevin, realizing that his plan to expose the BD Project had failed, decided to pretend to shoot Johnny and tell everyone that his subordinates were just forced to follow his commands, so that he would take the fall while the rest of his team got free. It's implied that by taking blame for all of the charges, Kevin was putting himself into some ''really'' deep troubles]].
-->[[spoiler: '''Darril''': This new squad leader of ours... He's not like any officer I've seen so far]].
-->[[spoiler: '''Renges''': Yeah. I don't know about you, but I think I like him already]].
* DarkIsNotEvil: His wanzer is by default black in color, and official artworks tend to show him wearing dark-colored clothing. He is, nonetheless, one of the most benevolent characters in ''1st''.
* ElitesAreGlamorous: Was a commando with the Black Hounds.
* FreudianTrio: The Superego who always wants to adhere to his principles, in contrast to Johnny's more realistic Ego and Matthew's laid-back Id.
* TheHeart: To Maria Paredes. [[spoiler: Kevin was the person who gave her the bravery to stand up to Driscoll, who had tormented Maria for years by forcing her to participate in his shady businesses]].
* TheLeader: To the Blood Hound's Bravo Team. Later to the Silver Lynxes.
* MasterOfAll: Much like Royd, Kevin was viable whether as a Striker, Assault, or Missileer.
* NiceGuy: He always tried to do the right thing. In USN Mission 3, while [[BadBoss Driscoll]] urged him to destroy their contact's vehicle so that Kevin could escape more easily, Kevin insisted on protecting the said contact.
* NiceGuysFinishLast: Zigzagged.
** It's known that Kevin was a very capable military commander and wanzer pilot, but he regularly got into troubles with his superiors due to his inability to be cold-hearted when making decisions. In fact, in USN Mission 2, his refusal to give the clearance to fire at the Star of Freedom's base (because [[LoveInterest Maria]]'s team was still inside) resulted in the terrorist group's leader having ample time to run away. This caused Kevin to get the demotion that would later bring him to the Huffman Island. Similar things happened multiple times during the story and was apparently the main reason why Kevin had difficulties getting promoted despite his competence. However...
** ... Kevin's NiceGuy tendency paid off '''big time''' in the second half of the game when [[spoiler: the Silver Lynxes voluntarily followed him on his journey to expose the BD Project]].
* PursueTheDreamJob: Downplayed, but by the time of the epilogue, [[spoiler: Kevin had decided to join USN peace-keeping forces to help protect South American children from suffering the same [[DarkAndTroubledPast fate]] that Maria had when she was young. This was probably closer to his true calling than any job he had had previously]].
* RedOniBlueOni: At times plays the Red to Johnny's Blue. The most notable example was when USN lost Freedom City - Kevin insisted that he wanted to go check on Maria (who was also fighting), while Johnny urged Kevin to make the right decisions of retreating and ended up pulling him away.

!!Canyon Crows

[[folder:Ryuji Sakata]]
!!Ryuji Sakata
Ryuji is an ally to Commander Royd, forming a brother-like bond since early on. After being discharged, he got likewise found and recruited by Olson. Ryuji serves as some sort of information genius and mentor to the Canyon Crows. [[spoiler:Ryuji is the younger son of Chairman Reniji Sakata and younger brother of President Koichi Sakata. As such, the moral uprightness level of the Sakata family is especially important to him]].
----
* BashBrothers: With Royd.
* BilingualBonus: His wanzer was named "Raioh", which meant "King of Thunder" in Japanese.
* FreudianTrio: The Ego to Royd's Id and Natalie's Superego.
* TheLancer: To Royd.
* MoreDakka: One of the strongest Assault-class characters in the game. He outright went for a gatling gun during his appearance in ''5'''s arena.
* RedOniBlueOni: The Blue to Royd's Red. Royd can be quite impulsive, which often resulted in Ryuji (rightfully) calling him out.
* TheRunaway: [[spoiler: He ran away from his family - the wealthy family behind the Sakatra Industries - to join the army before the events of the game]].
* ShellShockedVeteran: Downplayed. The events of ''1st'' didn't exactly have positive impacts on Ryuji's sanity, [[spoiler: seeing that both his father and brother were killed]].
-->'''Ryuji''': [[spoiler: Family...? I'm so tired... So many things have happened... since I left home to join the army. Too many things]].
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Natalie Blakewood]]
!!Natalie Blakewood
Natalie is Olson's chosen adjutant for the Canyon Crows. [[spoiler:Natalie is the daughter of the OCU Supreme Commanding General Willas Blakewood]]. She serves as an information brain (similar to Ryuji) and the "moral voice" to keep the Crows in line. Natalie is obsessed with duty and with keeping the others following every order, to the point of self-righteous arrogance at times. She is hardly the [[FourPhilosophyEnsemble optimist]] or about HonorBeforeReason as she may seem at first; her obedience tends to boil down to loyalty above anything else.
----
* BlindObedience: Arguably her character flaw. Throughout most of the game, Natalie was the one most eager to make sure the Crows follow orders. At one point, she even became an enemy unit as [[spoiler: Olson came to pursue the Canyon Crows (for the latter had learnt too much) and ordered Natalie to attack them]]. [[spoiler: Natalie eventually overcame this by defying the order and instead did what her conscience told her to do]].
-->'''Natalie''' (as [[spoiler:she's about to attack Olson]]): [[spoiler: I'm a fool]].
* FreudianTrio: The Superego to Royd's Id and Ryuji's Ego.
* HopelessSuitor: She flirted with Royd from time to time and showed signs of attraction to him. Too bad for her, Royd's heart [[UndyingLoyalty belongs only to]] Karen.
* JackOfAllTrades: Somewhat. Gameplay-wise, she's viable as either an Assault or a Missileer. Her arena appearance in ''5'' referenced this by having her use an Assault-Launcher hybrid build.
* TheLancer: Being Olson's chosen adjutant for the Crows, she's presumed to be this to Royd. She in fact acted as a voice of reason at several points, urging Royd and the others to obey orders as it's the wisest thing to do. [[spoiler: Turned out she's TheMole instead]].
* {{Leitmotif}}: Natalie's theme, which is a somewhat sad-sounding piano theme.
* TheMole: [[spoiler: It turned out she knew everything about what Olson and Driscoll had been up to behind the scene and even helped the two spy on the Canyon Crows. She got better however]].
* TeamMom: For most of ''1st'', she's the person who was trying to ensure the [[RagtagBunchOfMisfits Canyon Crows]] follow the orders of their superiors and generally stay where they should be. [[spoiler: This made [[TheMole her true job]] easier]].
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Keith Carabell/Joynas "J.J." Jeriaska]]
!!Keith Carabell/Joynas "J.J." Jeriaska
A mercenary from America named Keith is partnered with J.J., a mercenary who regularly sends a lot of his earnings to his family in Africa for their survival. In stark contrast to the money-hungry and pragmatic Keith, J.J. is the idealistic and conscientious mercenary. While Keith dislikes doing unpaid work, J.J. has a sense of compassion and HonorBeforeReason that restrains him from killing everything in sight for money. Another contrast between them is the [[FourTemperamentEnsemble temperament]] difference: the serious, ordinary, to-the-point J.J. and the cocky wise-guy Keith.
----
* BashBrothers: With each other.
* BloodKnight: Keith was this somewhat, as he seemed to be one of the Crows who genuinely enjoyed fighting in war to an extent.
-->'''Keith''' ([[spoiler:as he said goodbye to Royd]]): [[spoiler: ... It's been fun]].
* TheGiant: According to his bio, J.J. was at a whooping 192 cm tall, towering over most of the other members of the Crows.
* InformedPoverty: J.J.'s backstory was that he worked as a mercenary because he was from a poor African country and his family needed money. This aspect of his character, however, wasn't shown all that much in the game proper.
* JackOfAllTrades: Keith is viable as any of the three classes, making him one of the more versatile playable characters in ''1st''.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Keith. At first, he came across as a money-hungry mercenary who would [[OnlyInItForTheMoney happily kill people for money]]. [[spoiler: But the fact that he willingly joined Natalie in turning against Olson meant that he did have a conscience after all]]. It's also notable that [[spoiler: he and J.J. were the first to show up help Royd and Gentz in the epilogue]].
* MoreDakka: ... In contrast to Keith, J.J. is more of a dedicated Assault-class pilot.
* OnlyInItForTheMoney: [[spoiler: At first,]] they appeared to be motivated solely by money. They in fact regularly got into trouble due to their pursuit of better pay. Examples included Mission 10, in which Molly lured the two into a fight aginst USN troops by tipping them off about the whereabouts of some USN cargo trucks.
* RedOniBlueOni: Keith was the Red, while J.J. was the Blue. Keith would happily run into a fight if he thinks it could get him paid, while J.J. would be pursuing higher pay instead out of concerns for his family's needs.
-->'''J.J.''': Unlike Keith, I can't kill people for money I don't actually need.
* ThoseTwoGuys: Throughout the entirety of ''1st'', they were never seen without each other.
* VitriolicBestBuds: The two regularly ripped on each other, but it didn't change the fact that they'd always back each other up in life-and-death situations.

Truck driving means that he's not as well armored as the wanzer pilots; but it makes him feel safer in that it requires that he be kept out of the line of fire.

Royd's confession to allegedly starting the whole war drove her to wish evil on him. She tried to [[BestServedCold backstab]] the entire Canyon Crows unit by enticing Keith and J.J. into mounting an attack and then giving away their presence. Molly soon lets go of her underhanded vengeful tactics and does the best to help bring an end to the war

!!Karen Meure
At the age of 18, Karen enlisted in the OCU army as an intelligence officer and eventually became a skilled wanzer pilot, earning the rank of lieutenant. She was assigned to Huffman Island in a recon squad under Captain Royd Clive. While stationed at Huffman, she fell in love with the island itself along with Royd Clive, who proposed to her at the age of 22. The two planned to live on Huffman after their marriage. With the tension rising between the OCU and USN, their squad was sent to the Larcus District within USN territory. While on the mission, Karen is ambushed and outnumbered by USN troops led by Driscoll. With the others being far from her position, Karen's wanzer was destroyed and she was assumed to be KIA.

[[spoiler: However, the truth of the matter was far more complex. The reconnaissance run at the Larcus District revealed Sakata Industries was developing [=CPU=]s that were integrated with human brains. Following the Larcus Incident, Karen became one of the many subjects used for the B-Device project. Shortly after the Second Huffman Conflict, Royd destroyed the Wanzer containing her, allowing her to finally be at peace]].
----
* AndIMustScream: [[spoiler: She was eventually turned into a B-Type Device by [[TheBigBad Driscoll]], meaning that she ''had her brain removed from her body and turned into a biocomputer (B-Type Device) for the purpose of controlling Driscoll's wanzer'']].
* BrainInAJar: [[spoiler: What she ended up being forcibly turned into]].
* GoMadFromTheRevelation: Implied to have suffered this during Mission 1, where she went briefly into a state of incoherent mumbling after seeing what was inside the USN factory in Larcus - [[spoiler: operations of the BD Project, which involved using ''human brains'' as materials for biocomputers that control wanzers]]. As revealed in the USN scenario, she [[spoiler: went into a state of severe psychological trauma and kept crying Royd's name after being captured alive]].
-->'''Karen''' (while looking inside the factor): I... I don't believe it... This can't possibly be...
* HomeSweetHome: She and Royd were planning to settle down and start a family. Too bad the plan was stopped short by the war.
* IChooseToStay: As shown in the backstory sequences, she developed a love for the Huffman Island and wanted to settle there with Royd. This presumably was part of what motivated Royd to [[spoiler: become a terrorist to fight for Huffman Island after the ending]].
* {{Leitmotif}}: Karen's theme, which is a calm, soothing melody that played whenever Royd had a flashback about her.
* TheLostLenore: Zigzagged. At first, she was presumed to be dead, even by Royd himself, so she was this to Royd. [[RoaringRampageOfRevenge Avenging]] her was a major motivation of Royd. [[spoiler: However, she in fact survived the Larcus Incident, and as shown in the USN scenario, captured alive by Driscoll. Later, she had her brain turned into a biocomputer. During OCU Mission 24, Driscoll confronted the Crows and revealed Karen's fate to Royd, which ended with an enraged Royd destroying Driscoll's squad and installing Karen (now a B-Type Device) into his wanzer. She became this for real after her MercyKill]].
* MercyKill: [[spoiler: How Karen eventually died: Royd installed her (now a B-Type device) into his wanzer in order to put an end to the BD Project together with her. After the fight at the Longrivers Island, Royd decided to set his wanzer (with Karen inside) on fire to put an end to her suffering. Karen was able to move out of the fire, but decided to stay in the fire and die]].

!!Guri Olson
Olson is the Colonel who reinstated Royd and Ryuji and commissions the Canyon Crows to help give the OCU a chance in the war against the USN. Olson is possibly the one with whom the USN are most frustrated, a good OCU-ally counterpart to Driscoll. [[spoiler:Like Driscoll, Olson is really no friend to ''any'' great powers outside of the Black Hounds and Sakata Industries. Olson was really working with Driscoll for the [[TheMole sake of the B-Device the entire time]]. The only reason Olson cannot be called the BigBad because he dies early]].

* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: Actively looked for Royd and Ryuji after they were forced to leave the OCU military and gave them a chance to work for the [=CCs=].

[[folder:Maria Paredes]]
!!Maria Paredes
Maria Parades was the A-team platoon leader for the Black Hounds, and she was later revealed to have an extensive knowledge of Driscoll's actions during the Second Huffman Conflict, being his secret adjutant and enforcer.

[[spoiler: As she revealed during her encounter with Kevin in Aborde, Maria was born in a poor village located in USN South America. Maria was orphaned early in her childhood and was raised to be a guerrilla soldier by her parents' friend. After an attack in USN America failed, Maria was placed in a high-security prison, and was later released by Driscoll and thus forced to work for him ever since]].
----
* TheAce: She was a very capable leader for the A-team. On the gameplay side of things, while she was never playable, she was shown to be much stronger than everyone else during USN Mission 1.
* BigGood: In a way, she became this to [[spoiler: the La Alianza in ''4'', by providing them with vital info and probably also knowledge about getting around USN forces]].
* CloseRangeCombatant: She was consistently shown to rely on melee throughout ''1st'''s USN scenario.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: As revealed in [[spoiler: her encounter with Kevin in Aborde, Maria was born in a poor village in the troubled USN South America. She was orphaned in her childhood when USN-friendly government force attacked. She was then rasied to be a guerilla soldier by her parent's friend]].
* DarkIsNotEvil: Zigzagged. Maria's wanzer was black in color and official artworks tended to show her wearing dark colors. Right after Mission 2, she had a brief moment showing she's decent person beneath the [[DefrostingIceQueen cold exterior]]. Then during the Second Huffman Conflict, [[spoiler: she was regularly seen doing Driscoll's bidding, presumably aiding him on his BD Project, which involves ''kidnapping soldiers and using them as B-Type Device materials''. This caused players to wonder whether Maria was participating in shady businesses]]. Then when [[spoiler: Maria encountered Kevin in Aborde, she revealed that she had no choice but to work for Driscoll because he had saved her from being executed, and she wasn't happy about this, meaning that she wasn't a [[TheSociopath sociopath]] like Driscoll, after all]].
-->[[spoiler: '''Maria''': He (Driscoll) promised to save me from execution if I agreed to work for him, as an agent. If I had known... I would've just spat in his face and laughed]].
* DefrostingIceQueen: Occurred to her through the course of ''1st'''s USN scenario. Maria first appeared to be quite cold and distant, but as the story progressed, Kevin got to learn more about her and eventually [[spoiler: shared a hug with her at Aborde]].
* ItsAllMyFault: She had a moment of this after Kevin got into trouble for letting the leader of the Star of Freedom terrorist group escape (Mission 2) - [[NiceGuy Kevin]] refused to give the order to fire at Star of Freedom's base because Maria's team was still inside. Maria pointed out that she should've reported back more swiftly, and thus she's also responsible for the trouble. [[spoiler: It's an [[{{Foreshadowing}} early indication]] that Maria was a decent person deep down]].
* TheLeader: To the Black Hound A-team.
* {{Leitmotif}}: The OST "Maria" was named after her.
* [[spoiler: TheLostLenore: PlayedWith. Maria was [[ThoughtYouWereDead thought to be dead by the ending]]. Then the epilogue revealed that Kevin had joined USN peace-keeping forces, likely trying to help protect South American children from suffering the same fate Maria had when she was young. He kept a photo of Maria in his wanzer's cockpit as a reminder of that]].
* ThoughtYouWereDead: [[spoiler:In the ending sequence of the USN scenario, it was implied Maria was reported to have died from her injuries. AND THEN the epilogue revealed that she's still very alive, now working for the USN Investigations Bureau, and reports of her death were presumably faked to make it easier for her to hide her identity]].
* TookALevelInBadass: Somewhat. She was already [[TheAce quite the badass]] at the start of the story. But [[spoiler: after the Aborde encounter ended with Kevin promising to carry her burden with her, she gained the bravery to defy [[BadBoss Driscoll]]. She proceeded to deliver some [[LaserGuidedKarma well-deserved karma]] to the latter - by arranging for him to be hooked into the Mir Orlen, giving him a taste of his own medicine]].
* TheStoic: Typically came across as cold and professional for most of ''1st'''s USN scenario, until [[spoiler: the Aborde encounter]].
* WesternTerrorists: [[spoiler:Used to be a guerilla soldier fighting against the USN in South America when she was young. It ended with her being captured and set to the executed, only to be saved by Driscoll]].
* YouShallNotPass: She pulled one of these during [[spoiler: the cutscene before USN Mission 22. So Kevin and co. were pursuing Winger while planning to drop a wounded Maria off when they passed the hospital. Halfway through the city, they got stopped by PMO troops... then Maria - ''still bleeding from her wounds'' - jumped into her wanzer and fought the PMO troops, letting Kevin and co. escape and promising that she would survive]]. It's arguably more badass than the one pulled by [[spoiler: General Blakewood]] in the OCU scenario.

!!Frederick Lancaster
Frederick is a reporter and newspaper columnist, always willing to enter into risky scenarios for good column scoops. Sometimes Frederick gets a bit cocky and arrogant about his ability to fend for himself on the battlefield. But he is arguably the most amiable and agreeable of the bunch, right up there with J.J., Paul, Hans, and Peewie. Frederick gives off an intuitive air about him in questioning, investigating, and relating to others. If anyone has a redeeming quality, usually Frederick is one of the first to notice a hint thereof. [[note]] It is he who first learned that Soul/Spirit of Huffman is a group of ''no actual villains'' and saves them from being entirely wiped out. [[ForWantOfANail Without Frederick (and perhaps the observant Fort Monus bartender)]], the Crows would have won the so-believed "war on terror" and assumed it to be total victory, and Sakata Industries would never have been exposed for its true colors.[[/note]]
----
* BigGood: Became this to the Canyon Crows to an extent after the events of ''1st'', as [[spoiler:the book he wrote exposed the atrocities and manipulations committed by the supernations during the Second Huffman Conflict. This resulted in worldwide public outcry that placed pressure on the said supernations. Thus, while he didn't rejoin the Canyon Crows in the epilogue, he had still indirectly helped the Crows via his public influence]].
* GoingForTheBigScoop: He's willing to jump into a wanzer to fight on the frontline (facing many life-threatening situations) in his pursuit of the truth.
* IntrepidReporter: His investigation into the Spirit of Huffman was pivotal to [[spoiler: stopping the Canyon Crows from wiping out the alleged terrorist group. This resulted in the Crows having a conversation with Gentz and thus learning the truth behind the Second Huffman Conflict]].
* MasterOfNone: As befitting for someone who wasn't actually a soldier, he wasn't particularly good at any of the classes, though he could still be useful given proper training.
* MeaningfulName: It's quite fitting for a reporter to name his wanzer "Witness".
* NonActionGuy: Became this in ''4''. He still played a role in the plot, but he didn't participate in any fight this time around.
* RecurringCharacter: Showed up again in ''4''. It was part of his efforts to continue his investigation - [[spoiler: one of the unresolved plot elements in ''1st'' was Zaftra's involvement in the Second Huffman Conflict. This plotline eventually led to the events of ''4'', during which it was revealed that Zaftra had been desperately trying to restore their country to power due to economic hardships and the setback they suffered in the Second Huffman Conflict]].
* SecretChaser: Had a habit of chasing after the shady businesses of the supernations, often at the expense of his own personal safety or the time he could spend with his family, to the dismay of [[spoiler: his daughter Sayuri]].

Leader of the terrorist group "Soul/Spirit of Huffman." Gentz once spied on a factory of Sakata Industries, and the information he gathered drove him to attempt to bring down the company once and for all. He tried to assassinate Chairman Reniji Sakata once, as well as targeting Koichi the President by association. Gentz is being constantly thwarted by Driscoll and the Black Hounds until [[spoiler:Frederick attempts to stop the Canyon Crows' last battle against the Spirit of Huffman. While the Crows later investigate an abandoned factory, Driscoll and the Hounds waiting for them to show, Gentz was waiting for the Hounds to appear. Gentz is a Crows member from then onward]].
----
* CloseRangeCombatant: Is by default a Striker-class pilot.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Heavily implied to have suffered one at the hands of the supernations and/or the Sakata Industries, resulting in him become a terrorist leader that fights against them.
-->'''Gentz''' ([[spoiler:as he invited Royd to join him]]): [[spoiler: ... There's no one waiting for me, and nothing I really want. Except to make this island a place where people can live]].
* TheFaceless: His face was never shown in the game proper, as he almost always wore a helmet that concealed his face. The only time he wasn't masked was [[spoiler: during the ending sequence, where he took off his helmet as he invited Royd to join force with him. However, during the scene the players were viewing events unfold during a sunset, from the back of the characters, with the characters' figures all shadowed]].
* {{Leitmotif}}: The soundtrack "Relative Thinking" was this to Gentz to some degree, since in the OCU scenario, it was played only when it's the Spirit of Huffman's turn.
* MysteriousPast: Much of his past remained unknown throughout ''1st'', except that he once worked with the Sakata Industries (resulting in him knowing about the shady BD Project) and harbored deep hate and grievance against them.
* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: Apparently in one against the Sakata Industries.
* WesternTerrorist: A relatively benevolent one, as [[spoiler: he only targeted the Sakata Industries and explicitly told his followers to not harm civilians]].

[[folder:SPOILER CHARACTER 1]]
!!Driscoll aka Mikhail Ilyich Rezanov
Driscoll was a USN Captain during the time of the Second Huffman Conflict, and was the head of the Nirvana Institute controlled by [[spoiler: Zaftra]]. The OCU usually bear the brunt of Driscoll's cruelty, but Driscoll is really an ally to none but [[spoiler: the Republic of Zaftra]]. Driscoll's mission is being used by Koichi Sakata for the company's gain and, at the same time, Driscoll is using Sakata Industries to make [[spoiler: Zaftra]] reign supreme.

[[spoiler: In a twist of fate, Driscoll would later have quite a nasty, bitter taste of his own medicine as his catatonic body was ordered to be transported to Longrivers Island by Captain Maria Paredes, his longtime conspiracy partner, and injected with an S-Type device. His body would then be incorporated with the Mir Orlen, paving the way for a final showdown between him and the Canyon Crows]].
----
* AxCrazy: Driscoll was normally very calm and cunning. But by the time of the Longrivers Island incident (Final Mission of ''1st'''s OCU scenario), it's obvious that Driscoll... wasn't quite right in the head. [[spoiler: Being turned into a "[[BrainInAJar S-Type Device]]" controlling the Mir Orlen didn't help matters]].
* BadBoss: As revealed in greater details in ''1st'''s USN scenario, working under or with Driscoll is... probably not a fun experience. [[spoiler: Koichi Sakata found out about this [[YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness the hard way]]]].
-->'''Driscoll''' (to Kevin, who's trying to protect their contact's jeep): It's me. That jeep will only slow you down. If you already have the package, destroy the jeep and get across the border.
* TheBigBad: Served as this in ''1st'''s OCU scenario. He's the head of the Nirvana Institute, which was to blame for most of the atrocities committed (namely [[spoiler: the BD Project, which involves using the brains of kidnapped soldiers as materials for biocomputers]]). He's also the greatest threat in the final mission, being the pilot of [[spoiler: the Mir Orlen unit]].
* BrainInAJar: [[spoiler: He ended up being turned into a "S-Type Device" (in truth a juiced-up B-Type Device at best) like Karen. Unlike Karen, however, he actually seemed to be somewhat happy about this fate, though [[AxCrazy his sanity was questionable by that time]]]].
* DarkIsEvil: He pilots a black-colored wanzer and [[spoiler: would happily kidnap humans and have them used as materials for creating biocomputers]].
* TheDogBitesBack: '''[[UpToEleven BIG TIME]]'''. Driscoll had committed many acts of cruelty against the other major characters, and ''every single one of them'' ended up inflicting some forms of well-deserved karma on Driscoll. Let's do this one by one:
** Royd: [[spoiler: Driscoll turned Royd's fiancee Karen into a biocomputer, started a war that got Royd into a [[ItsAllMyFault self-blaming]] depression, and then gloated over the whole thing when he revealed Karen's fate to Royd. Royd... blew up Driscoll's wanzer, sent him into a state of catatonia (opening up the opportunity for Maria to hook him onto the Mir Orlen), and eventually brought down the whole BD Project]].
** Karen: [[spoiler: Driscoll was one of the brains behind the BD Project and was responsible for ''extracting Karen's brains and [[AndIMustScream forcibly turning her into a biocomputer]]''. Karen... got installed into Royd's wanzer after Royd defeated Driscoll in combat. Turning out to be a very good biocomputer, she was of great help to Royd in the latter's journey to bring down the BD Project]].
** Maria: [[spoiler: Driscoll took the young Maria (then a guerilla member about to be executed) under his wings, forcing her to participate in a lot of the atrocities. Maria eventually struck back when Kevin Greenfield gave her the courage to. She... had the unconscious Driscoll (left so because Royd blew up his wanzer) hooked onto a Mir Orlen as a "S-Type Device", which meant [[BrainInAJar Driscoll involuntarily had his brain removed and put into a machine]] - [[LaserGuidedKarma suffering the exact same fate he had inflicted on Karen and many others]]]].
* TheDragon: He's in reality this to [[spoiler: the Republic of Zaftra]]. [[spoiler: Apparently, even Maria, who had worked under him for years, never learnt of this during the events of ''1st'']].
* KilledOffForReal: He presumably died when [[spoiler: the Canyon Crows blew up the base at Longrivers Island]].
* LaserGuidedKarma: As mentioned in TheDogBitesBack above, Driscoll ended up [[spoiler: suffering the same fate he inflicted on Karen and many others - being turned into a biocomputer against his will]].
* {{Leitmotif}}: Driscoll's theme, which is a very ominous-sounding theme.
* LightningBruiser: Whenever Driscoll appeared, he's usually piloting his trademark Raven wanzer, which can take a lot of punishment, hits like a truck, and can move pretty fast.
* [[spoiler: [[MotherRussiaMakesYouStrong Mother Zaftra Makes You Strong]]: A Zaftran and an extremely deadly wanzer pilot]].
* OneManArmy: There's no doubt that Driscoll was an extremely skilled wanzer pilot. In OCU Mission 20, he was there to help the Crows fight the Spirit of Huffman terrorist group, fighting alone and having no problem taking care of himself.
* {{Sadist}}: Somewhat. During ''1st'''s OCU Mission 24, Driscoll [[spoiler: gloated over turning Karen into a B-Type Device in front of Royd. It's hard to find any reason for this except for enjoyment in watching Royd seethe with rage]].
* TheSociopath: He had shown absolutely no remorse for any of the many atrocities he had participated in, in stark contrast to [[spoiler: Maria]].
* TeethClenchedTeamwork: Working in one of these with [[spoiler: Patrick S. Winger]]. Driscoll had shown very little respect for the latter, which annoyed the latter to no end.
* UndyingLoyalty: For all of his cruelty, it's hard to argue that Driscoll hadn't shown extreme loyalty to [[spoiler: the "Motherland", aka Republic of Zaftra]].
* [[WeaponOfChoice Wanzer Of Choice]]: The [[SuperPrototype Type 11 "Raven"]] wanzer.
