* TheScapegoat: During the mission to destroy the Star of Freedom Headquarters in the Andes Mountains, Captain Maria Paredes gets hung up for some reason during her infiltration of the base interior. This delay proves to be very costly as it allows the resistance leadership to avoid the orbital strike which then spurs the Star of Freedom to continue their efforts against the [=UCS=]. Although Maria is clearly at fault for the embarrassing failure, Kevin Greenfield takes the blame instead as Maria is too important to be removed from the Black Hounds.

Royd is an OCU commander and the protagonist for the OCU scenario. His fiancee, Karen Meure, had become part of his unit in the early events of the story. During the investigation of the USN (a.k.a. UCS) munition plant, Karen rushed ahead in her spying, only to be met by an ambush and [[spoiler: (apparently)]] killed by the infamous Driscoll. Ever since then, Royd had been mentally unstable and moody, a cross between an [[RevengeBeforeReason unforgiving blood-avenger]] (toward Karen's killer) and [[ItsAllMyFault hard on himself]] for [[spoiler: supposedly]] destroying the treaty between the great powers. After being discharged from the military, he at first had no intent on returning. An OCU colonel named Olson, however, managed to recruit him using the promise of avenging Karen's death. Royd is now the commander of the unit "Canyon Crows".

* WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds: By the time of the events in ''2'', Royd [[spoiler: had, out of hatred towards the OCU, turned into a mass-murderer who has killed ''civilians'' in his attempt to fight the great power, which ended with him being killed by the Dull Stags. Yes, he had turned into a horrible villain by then, but looking at what he's been through (see BrokenBird above), you'd probably still feel kind of sorry for him]].

Kevin was born in USN North America to a military family, as his father was a former Lieutenant Colonel in the USN Army Kevin enlisted at the age of 18 and graduated from a top military academy before applying to join the Black Hounds, an elite USN special forces unit. Based partly on his his own achievements and partly on his fathers reputation, Kevin was accepted as Black Hounds B-team platoon leader. Soon after passing the qualification test, Kevin met and quickly fell in love with fellow Black Hounds member Maria Paredes.

After an incident during a mission caused the unit to fail to capture the leader of the "Star of Freedom" terrorist group, Kevin and his squad mates, Johnny Sanders and Matthew Lorenzo, lost their positions in the Black Hounds. Kevin was nearly court-martialed, but due to the rising tensions between the USN and OCU during the lead up to the Second Huffman Conflict, he was sent to the Nirvana Institute under the command of Driscoll. A mutual dislike soon began between the two due to their opposing personalities, but they begrudgingly worked together for a time.

* ReassignedToAntarctica: In ''1st'''s USN campaign, an unnamed USN general expresses the intent to reassign [[TheHero Kevin Greenfield]] to Alaska "to push up papers until he was dead" as the punishment, for blowing a critical mission to bring down the [[WesternTerrorists Star of Freedom]]. Fortunately for Kevin, he is sent to Huffman Island instead, at the request of the Special Weapons Research Division known as the "Nirvana Institute". Upon arrival, however, [[TheDreaded Driscoll]] threatens Kevin with reassignment to Alaska if he doesn't follow through on his orders without question.

Then the epilogue revealed that Kevin had joined USN peace-keeping forces, likely trying to help protect South American children from suffering the same fate Maria had when she was young. Karen... got installed into Royd's wanzer after Royd defeated Driscoll in combat. Turning out to be a very good biocomputer, she was of great help to Royd in the latter's journey to bring down the BD Project]].

* RedAndBlackAndEvilAllOver: Technically, they're no more "evil" than the average soldiers. But they had the look - their wanzers were painted a dark shade of red, their members were all battle-hardened soldiers with horribly scarred faces, and they were ''very'' merciless in battle.

* FatherToHisMen: Grieg was hinted to be this in the OCU scenario. During the fight in Fort Monus (OCU Mission 16), [[spoiler: he was shown to be grieving over his subordinates' deaths at the Crows' hands]]. This was explored in greater details in the USN scenario, in which Grieg was shown to genuinely care about the safety of his men. In fact, at one point Grieg even criticized [[NiceGuy Kevin Greenfield]] for always wanting to do the right thing, as that might put one's subordinates in danger.

The Hell's Wall is the 64th mobile squadron of the USN Army, consisting of 6 core members: leader Grieg Demetrius, Josh Dalin, Ghetta Cedric, Dave Starling, Milligan Ashton, and Rebus Victor. [[TheDreaded Widely feared]] as the USN army's most elite unit, they played a crucial role in taking down Freedom City during the early parts of the Second Huffman Conflict. During the OCU's counter attack, the Hell's Wall fought the Canyon Crows and were defeated in battle, with Grieg Demetrius and Ghetta Cedric being the only known survivors. Grieg Demetrius later fought the Crows again in Fort Monus and died, while Ghetta Cedric [[spoiler: joined the Silver Lynxes]].

Frederick is a reporter and newspaper columnist, always willing to enter into risky scenarios for good column scoops. Sometimes Frederick gets a bit cocky and arrogant about his ability to fend for himself on the battlefield. But he is arguably the most amiable and agreeable of the bunch, right up there with J.J., Paul, Hans, and Peewie. Frederick gives off an intuitive air about him in questioning, investigating, and relating to others. If anyone has a redeeming quality, usually Frederick is one of the first to notice a hint thereof. [[note]] It is he who first learned that Soul/Spirit of Huffman is a group of ''no actual villains'' and saves them from being entirely wiped out. [[ForWantOfANail Without Frederick (and perhaps the observant Fort Monus bartender)]], the Crows would have won the so-believed "war on terror" and assumed it to be total victory, and Sakata Industries would never have been exposed for its true colors.[[/note]]

* BrokenBird: He watched his lover killed, [[spoiler: falsely]] believed that he accidentally started a terrible war, was given the hope that his lover wasn't dead only to [[spoiler: learn that she had been turned into [[BrainInAJar B-Type Device]]]], [[spoiler: got falsely labeled as a terrorist by the great powers]], so on and so forth. It actually had pretty bad impacts on his sanity. See WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds below.
