** In the comics where we see him in person in flashbacks, he's a lot like [[Disney/TheSwordInTheStone Merlin]].

* PrecursorHero: He didn't just conceive lots of unicorn magic in his days, but also fought against evil creatures on his own, as shown with the Sirens in ''Rainbow Rocks''.

* WizardBeard: Why do you think he's called Star Swirl '''the Bearded'''? A long beard is a must for this archetypal wizard.

* [[ProudWarriorRaceGuy Proud Warrior Race Pony]]: According to the play, Hurricane's love of battle and conquest was typical of ponies at this point in history.

* MythologyGag: Based on Scorpan from the [[WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyTVSpecials G1 special]], where he was one of Tirek's minions who eventually made a HeelFaceTurn.

The actual Power Ponies only appear in the upcoming IDW MLP Annual 2014 comic. They match the pony types that played them in the episode (except that Masked Matter-Horn is a unicorn, not an alicorn), but are [[AdaptationDyeJob different colours]] and don't get along as well as the Mane Six. Also, Humdrum is an earth pony colt instead of baby dragon.

* GadgeteerGenius : Rather unexpectedly, when the Power Ponies need to rebuild the machine that took their powers, it's Radiance who does all the work. Many of her constructs also seem to have a mechanical or construction theme.
* ImaginationBasedSuperpower: She can create constructs of purple force shaped as everything needed for the situation at hand. Rarity's creations all had a "girly"/"stylish" aspect, Radiance seems to go with mechanical based objects supplemented by lots of bows.
* SpoiledSweet : Much like Rarity, she's self obsessed and vain but still a true blue hero.

* GettingCrapPastTheRadar: She's called "Mistress" and specialize in restraining ponies... mmmh....
** FridgeLogic: She's based on the bondage-heavy Wonder Woman, after all...
* TheLancer : She spends a lot of the 2014 annual story clashing with Masked Matter-horn over the leadership role. She also has abilities almost directly counter to hers.
* LeaderWannabe : She clearly lacks respect for Masked Matter-horn, and actually takes charge several times (much to Matter-horn's displeasure).

* PunnyName : A cross between "mare" and "marvelous".

* NonstandardCharacterDesign: His head looks more like Spike's then a pony's.
* OnlySaneMan : His real role seems to be this, as in both the episode and the annual he ends up saving the day by convincing the heroes to [[LetsGetDangerous get it together]].

* GigglingVillain : She can pull off a full on evil laugh when pressed, but most of the time just giggles constantly.
* GreenAndMean: Her prehensile hair is green

* TheHyena : Her reaction to her plans being ruined, being electrocuted and her hair going out of control? Bouncing around on the floor with a huge grin on her face, cackling madly.

They are sort of like fictional characters, though they're not a straight forward or your typical example of one because their identity and "existence" was fabricated by someone or [[CollectiveIdentity a group of someones]] to pose as a real (InUniverse) individual or a group of individuals.

* TheAce: A mysterious super heroine superior to Rainbow Dash and with the super strength of an Earth Pony, the super magic of an Unicorn, the super flight of a Pegasus, the ability to predict the future, and near the end, seemingly teleport or be in two places at once? Totally a Mary Sue. [[spoiler:Actually she isn't. It was Applejack, Twilight, Fluttershy and Pinkie Pie wearing near-identical costumes (with modifications for unicorn or pegusus anatomy when needed) and taking turns whenever their single abilities would be handy, and all of them wearing it near the end to screw with Rainbow Dash, for good intentions, of course. Everyone else just assumed she was just a single super-pony and their awe & hype did the rest.]]

* RobeAndWizardHat / WizardBeard: Twilight wears all of these on Nightmare Night to emulate him.

* LeaderWannabe : She clearly lacks respect for Masked Matter-horn, and actually takes charge several times (much to MMh's displeasure).
* PerpetualFrowner: The 2014 annual gives her a constantly angry face that wouldn't look out of place on a NinetiesAntiHero.

As the actual power ponies have not appeared, only the Manes dressed as them, little is known about their appearances or personalities. It's unsure if the Power Ponies are even the same pony type as the Mane character that portrayed them, although Humdrum almost certainly isn't a dragon. The upcoming IDW MLP Annual 2014 comic appears to be focused on the "actual" Power Ponies.

* AllThereInTheManual: We haven't even seen a picture of him in the show (not withstanding the iconic image of him used in the museum's posters for "Three's a Crowd", but he's appeared in the abovementioned [[OfficialFanSubmittedContent fan-designed]] licensed [[TheMerch art print]]. He does appear in a voiceless one-off role within IDW's "Friends Forever" #2, and is a major character within the main comic series #17, though the latter is closer to the all-white color scheme of the show image.

* TheArchmage: Probably an obscenely powerful mage considering that Twilight calls him the "most important conjurer of the pre-classical era."

* LoveRedeems: Of the friendship type of love, as Starswirl's friendship along with other ponies resulted in his redemption.
* MementoMacGuffin: He had given his brother a medallion. Tirek would later give it to Discord as a sign of their friendship and trust. [[spoiler: Tirek was lying and it meant nothing to him. The medallion would become Twilight's key.]]
