* LimitedSocialCircle: Probably the most obvious example; the six friends barely seem to know anybody other than each other, their families, and their GirlOfTheWeek (or BoyOfTheWeek). And ironically, there are always a lot of people (in the background) at their parties. A bit strange since the friends don't seem to hang out with anyone but each other.

And ironically, there are always a lot of people (in the background) at their parties. A bit strange since the friends don't seem to hang out with anyone but each other. This gets lampshaded in "TOW Rachel's Sister" when Jill knocks on the door of Rachel and Monica's apartment. The gang all stare at the door in confusion, and Phoebe actually counts the six of them as if she's trying to work out who could be outside.

* ChivalrousPervert: Joey is this when it comes to his female friends. He hits on them on numerous occasions and tries several ploys to either see them naked or see them kiss each other, but he's kind, fiercely loyal and incredibly respectful towards them. When everyone believes Phoebe's been in a porno movie, Joey is the only member of the gang who refuses to watch it. He also freaks out quite a bit when Rachel calls his bluff and actually offers to sleep with him. Upon hearing Phoebe was pregnant, he goes out to beat up the supposed father... then comes back and proposes to Phoebe so she won't be alone. Later, when he finds out that Rachel is the one who is actually pregnant, he promptly proposes to her too. In one episode, when a drunken Rachel responds favorably to his "How you doin'?" line, he tells Ross not to let her drink any more, while in another, when he mentioned that he found a drunk girl passed out on the couch in his and Chandler's apartment (following a party), in response to everyone's horrified questions of "What did you do to her?", he rather angrily declares, "I put a blanket over her in case she was cold and a bucket next to her in case she needed to throw up!", making it abundantly clear that he never even ''thought'' about taking advantage of her.

* VeryFakeResume: His acting resume is full of "special skills" that are actually a pack of lies. Over the course of the series we learn he's claimed extensive dance training in multiple disciplines (ballet, tap and modern dance), fluency in French, archery, horseback riding, guitar playing, and "can drink a gallon of milk in 10 seconds". It also claims he can do a Southern accent, but every time he tries it comes out Jamaican. He explains to Monica that he was always taught that you should say "yes" to whatever is asked of you in an audition, and try to work out ''how'' to do whatever it is when you get the part.

*** Interestingly as the series continued a lot of the story arcs are about them overcoming their issues. Phoebe reconnects with her family, becomes more grounded and builds a successful relationship rather than jumping from guy to guy. Ross gradually gets over his divorces, Rachel learns how to be independent, and Joey starts considering commitment.

* ICantDance: His resume claims he has years of dance experience and even trained with Twyla Tharp. In reality, he's a terrible dancer whose "moves" are limited to swinging his arms around and bobbing his head.

Added DiffLines:

* ICantDance: He openly admits he's a terrible dancer and refuses to dance at weddings to avoid embarrassing himself. Before his wedding to Monica he takes dance lessons so he can surprise her for their first dance, but then his shoes turn out to be too slippery to do anything but his old "waving my hands around" move.

* ItalianAmericanCaricature: * He fits some of the stereotypes but not others, you don't really see him in bowling shirts as being an aspiring actor he follows fashion a little more than average. However, he has a huge family (being the only boy with [[MassiveNumberedSiblings seven sisters]] whom he is very protective of) who are Catholic (even if he doesn't attend). He is also very fond of both his grandmothers (Nonna and Nonnie) and translates for Nonnie who can't speak English. * InformedAbility: His acting. When it's shown, he's usually in terrible off-off-off-off-Broadway crap and most of his listed skills are lies (dancing, speaking French, sword-fighting, riding horses...). By the end of the series, though, he's secured a successful career as an actor and even co-starred in an Oscar-worthy film. However, we never get to see the higher quality acting he's supposed to be doing that would have led to that result.

* EnsembleCast: The show famously has six main characters. All six main characters appear in every single episode, with (usually) equally divided-up screen time and the cast themselves insisted they be paid the same amount and each be concealable for Lead Role award nominations. At one point, they even had a chart marking the number of lines and jokes each cast member got, to make sure it was even.

At one point, they even had a chart marking the number of lines and jokes each cast member got, to make sure it was even. The actors also insisted that they all receive the same pay, making the women some of the highest paid in Hollywood.
* {{Foil}}: All of the characters bounce off each other in various ways as their personalities conflict. Ross and Phoebe, for example, with his bookish love of science and her off-beat mysticism, or Joey and Chandler being manchildren contrasted with Monica's control freak tidiness. The only time we really see a dedicated foil relationship, it's with two unconventional trios: Rachel, Joey, and Phoebe vs Monica, Ross, and Chandler as the latter have decent money thanks to their work as cook, museum paleontologist, and ... [[RunningGag whatever Chandler does]] and the former don't as a waitress, a struggling actor, and a masseuse/unpaid freelance guitarist.

Added DiffLines:

* SuckinessIsPainful: Phoebe is a terrible guitar player and singer, mostly for the comedy, but also because Kudrow hated learning to play the guitar and got out of it by insisting that because Phoebe is supposed to suck, it's okay if she only knows two and a half chords.

Added DiffLines:

* SuckinessIsPainful: He's an even worse musician than Phoebe. His "music" is a basic song played by the keyboard itself while he presses keys to make random noises (like traffic or barnyard animals) come out. He also tries to learn to play the bagpipes for Monica's and Chandler's wedding, because Chandler has some Scot heritage. Both times, only Phoebe is impressed (she even sings along with the bagpipes. "EEEEEEEEE EEEEE EEEEEEE.").
