[[folder: The Hunters]]
!!Tropes that apply to The Hunters as a whole

* BadassCrew: The Hunters are constantly pitted against opponents and obstacles that should be far beyond their Levels but they continuously triumph against them regardless, often saving hundreds of lives in the process. They are also fiercely loyal to each other to the point that each of them is willing to risk their own lives if it meant the others would be saved.
* BandOfBrothers: Quickly develops into this due to facing quests and challenges nominally beyond their abilities, and so early as students.
* BotheringByTheBook: In the aftermath of [[spoiler:Mistral’s attack on Vale]], The Hunters decide to escape [[spoiler:Jaune’s unofficial house arrest]] under the pretense of doing exactly what the Caste System normally encourages them to do: taking a Quest. Ozpin and Glynda pretend not to notice until they’re already long gone on the road to [[spoiler:Ansel.]]
* FamedInStory: Downplayed. By Book 5 it's revealed that they have developed a bit of a reputation within Beacon for their accomplishments in the previous books.
* FireForgedFriends: Basically how Jaune and the others all came together; with him, Nora, Pyrrha, and Ren teaming up in Beacon's initiation quest, then again with Ruby, Weiss, Blake, and Yang joining them in a Dungeon. This all culminates into their forming of the Hunters (sans Blake initially).
* HiddenDepths: Every member is either implied or stated to have [[DarkSecret troubling secrets,]] [[DarkAndTroubledPast tragic pasts,]] [[BlessedWithSuck or inherent abilities]] [[CursedWithAwesome that cause personal problems]] that would be entirely unexpected to anyone that judges them solely off of their Class and appearance.
* MisfitMobilizationMoment: Jaune's WhatTheHellHero speech to the rest of the guild forces them to acknowledge their individual failings and how each of them had contributed to the mess the group had become. All of them then resolved to never fail in such a way again and rallied together to face the threats ahead.
* [[TheOnlyOneITrust The Only Ones I Trust]]: One of the primary reasons Ozpin continues to deploy the Hunters against the Greycloaks is that they are some of the only people he ''knows'' to be sided against them.
* OutsideContextProblem: The Hunters have repeatedly been one to the Greycloaks, thwarting or otherwise interfering with their plans in Atlas, Mistral, Vale, and Vacuo.
* {{Protectorate}}: They take responsibility for defending and aiding [[spoiler:the village of Ansel into becoming a safe haven for the survivors of all of the massacres conducted by the Mistral Army in the region]].
* RagtagBunchOfMisfits: What they were before their MisfitMobilizationMoment. Their group was originally composed of a Mage and Assassin that couldn't stop sniping at each other, an overprotective BoisterousBruiser and her scythe-wielding sister, Monk and Barbarian ChildhoodFriends, and a Champion desperate to remain out of the limelight, all led by a Blacksmith disguised as a Knight.
* WeDoTheImpossible: The other reason Ozpin makes heavy use of the guild as they consistently triumph in every situation they find themselves in regardless of how improbable such a feat may seem.

!!Ruby Rose
Class: Reaper

The first person Jaune meets at Beacon. Ruby is an upbeat and energetic girl with a fascination for Heroes that is attending Beacon two years early.

----

* AbsurdCuttingPower: Has shown to be capable of cutting through both higher level Grimm and humans as long as she's wielding a scythe, likely due to a class skill.
* {{Adorkable}}: A given since this is Ruby. She treats her weapon like her child, geeks out over her companions' gear, and is so excited to be invited into a Dungeon that she [[TheGlomp glomps Jaune]].
* AllLovingHero: Displays absolutely no enmity to anyone, does her best to avoid fatally wounding even the worst human opponents, and is even commented by Qrow that she'd befriend an enemy and be surprised if she was betrayed by them.
* BaitAndSwitch: A drunk Ruby pulls this [[spoiler:after arriving in Magnis,]] where she proceeds to enter Jaune's room in a nightgown, cozy up to him, suggest they do something "naughty", [[spoiler:and argues that they abuse their authority by simply using Cinder's scroll immediately to arrest the Mistral commander [[ChronicHeroSyndrome in an attempt to avoid a battle and save lives.]]]]
* CantHoldHerLiquor: It's shown to only take a few drinks to get her drunk [[spoiler:during the Magnis quest, and it's still not enough to break her [[ChronicHeroSyndrome need to save people.]]]]
* ChronicHeroSyndrome: Something she inherited from her mother. Ruby is determined to save as many lives as she can and, to the consternation of Yang and Qrow, won't hesitate to jump headfirst into danger if that's what it takes.
* CripplingOverspecialization: [[spoiler:What the Reaper Class turns out to be, as it's revealed her Agi score ranks S as the greatest rate of increase per Level ever recorded, but with all her other stats ranking D, save for Con which is ranked X for never increasing since she was born. It makes the Reaper Class the best when it comes to running/dodging, but the worst in every other aspect.]]
* DarkSecret: Though she doesn't hide it like Jaune, the specific details about her Class is something she constantly avoids revealing whenever it's brought up.
* DemotedToExtra: As a result of not only Jaune being the protagonist instead of her, but also with the story being told entirely from his POV, she's not even a {{Deuteragonist}} like canon Jaune.
* DidNotThinkThisThrough: Suffers from this due to [[ChronicHeroSyndrome always trying to immediately save people,]] but especially on the Eldon Quest, [[spoiler:where her plan to have Labour Caste bandits ambush her and Jaune didn't take into account the possibility of there being a Hero in the group.]]
* FamedInStory: [[spoiler:As the first Reaper ever recorded in Remnant, she was known by the King of Vale, Ozpin, and various Vale nobles before she even attended Beacon in the first chapters of the story, as they were all consulted in trying to decide what Caste her Reaper class was suited to be.]]
* FragileSpeedster:
** Even at the start of the story Ruby is still incredibly fast. However, her Constitution is so low, despite killing enough Grimm to level up several times, that it's said that even Labour Caste members can threaten her.
** This is later revealed to be because [[spoiler:she has an ''S ranked'' Agi score, and an ''X ranked'' Con, meaning that she is one of the fastest people on Remnant while also having the same constitution she had at level one.]]
** Partially [[DefiedTrope defied]] [[spoiler:when [[UltimateBlacksmith Jaune]] [[GeometricMagic engraves a rune of constitution]] onto her scythe, doubling her durability. Taken even further when he forges her a pauldron and welds the Rune of Cold Steel onto it, effectively increasing her constitution by a factor of six.]]
* FriendlessBackground: She is implied to be even worse off than in canon {{WebAnimation/RWBY}} due to the [[DarkSecret issues that come from being a Reaper.]]
* GlassCannon: UpToEleven. Under the right circumstances, Ruby can utterly decimate even [[spoiler:an Ursa that has reached its berserk stage]] but her Constitution is so low that a single hit from even an arrow shot from a member of the Labour caste could prove fatal.
* HiddenDepths: Ruby may be outwardly boisterous and heroic, but [[spoiler:she is plagued with incredible self-doubt regarding the nature of her Class and the knowledge that future Reapers will be sentenced to a lower Caste should she fail or potentially incorrectly placed in the Hero Caste and killed should she succeed.]] YMMV on how well this jibes with her previous characterization throughout the story, as well as her constant insistence on [[ChronicHeroSyndrome needing to be a Hero.]]
* IncrediblyLamePun: She is literally a Grimm Reaper. The pun works even better here than it does in canon {{WebAnimation/RWBY}}.
* LethalChef: It's mentioned that Ruby is never allowed to help cook, because any attempt results in a dish so poisonous it's almost regarded as alchemy.
* MissingMom: Summer was a Warrior who spent most of her time on quests, one of which she never returned from [[spoiler:as Salem killed her]]. While Ruby remembers the bedtime stories Summer would tell her fondly, Yang says that is one of the ''only'' memories Ruby has of their mother. To Yang, rather than a mother that was also a Hero, she was [[ChronicHeroSyndrome a Hero]] [[ParentalNeglect that was also a mother]].
* NotTheIntendedUse: Implied with Crimson Slash. Based on her hesitance with its name and the details of her Class, Jaune believes it to be [[spoiler:a farming skill.]]
* OutsideContextProblem: [[spoiler:As the first Reaper in all of recorded history, no one is sure what Caste she's supposed to be in. The only reason she was allowed into Beacon was because it's easier to move her down in Caste if she fails as a Hero.]]
* RazorWind: Crimson Slash, a wide-range attack that cuts everything in the area, from trees, to bushes, to [[spoiler:retreating Rangers]].
* SecretKeeper: [[spoiler:Turns out she's been one to Jaune for some time. She became suspicious when he gave her her scythe in the dungeon during their first month at Beacon; her suspicions grew when she didn't find any scythes in Beacon's Vault, and they were entirely confirmed when she noticed the [[GeometricMagic rune]] Jaune placed on Crescent Rose during the siege of Magnis that nearly doubled her Constitution.]]
* SinisterScythe: As a Reaper, this is the only thing Ruby can handle. While the ones she initially wields aren't quite so sinister, being mundane farming tools, the one she later acquires [[spoiler:from Jaune after he forged it for her in the Dungeon]] is a weapon fit for a Reaper.
* SpottingTheThread: As Ruby's [[spoiler:Class was extensively analyzed so as to be placed in the proper Caste since she is the first Reaper in recorded history]], she knows ''exactly'' how rare a drop a battle-scythe is [[spoiler:and knows that Jaune was lying when he stated he found Crescent Rose in the Dungeon.]]
* YouAreBetterThanYouThinkYouAre: Both gives one to and receives one from Jaune. In the first case, she reassures him that, even though he is the guild leader, not all of the actions or situations they find themselves in are his fault. The latter occurs after Ruby tries to [[spoiler:quit the guild after being hoodwinked by Torchwick]] with Jaune reassuring her that all of the guild value her and none of them blame her for what happened.

!!Blake Belladonna
Class: Assassin

An enigmatic individual with a [[DarkAndTroubledPast troubled past]]. She assists Jaune during initiation and [[NiceGuy his efforts to pay her back]] lead to her continued entanglement with The Hunters.

----

* AloofDarkHairedGirl: Pale skin and dark hair? Check. Highly attractive? Check. Socially reserved with a cool and distant personality? Check!
* BadassBandolier: Wears one to hold her numerous throwing knives.
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: How her friendship with Jaune started, as she appreciated his gestures of gratitude for saving his life, and generally treating her like a person worthy of respect. [[spoiler:And eventually lead to her [[SingleWomanSeeksGoodMan falling for him due to his kind and caring nature.]]]]
* BrutalHonesty: Never spares Jaune's feelings when giving her opinion on his plans and ideas, and he often accepts them as genuine criticism instead of taking offense.
* CannotSpitItOut: Her feelings towards [[spoiler:Jaune]]. She dismisses many of her more tender actions towards him as nothing, always tells him not to read into them, and has trouble stating her true feelings. [[spoiler:Even after they've been dating for over six months, the most she can get out is a quiet mumble containing 'love', 'you', and 'too']].
* CastingAShadow: Has several skills revolving around shadows.
* CruelToBeKind:
** Blake intimidates a Beacon applicant into returning back to her group so that she can find allies for the initiation trial.
** Discussed by Jaune and Ruby as Jaune believes that, if she thought it was what was best for him, [[spoiler:Blake would prevent him from being a Hero if she believed he, as a member of the Labour Caste, couldn't handle it.]]
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Strongly implied. She doesn't like talking about her past, her mother died in unexplained circumstances, [[spoiler:[[RPGMechanicsverse she has an incredibly high level in a world where such a thing is only gained through killing]]]], [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking she has an inexplicable knowledge of ship handling]], and [[TheyreCalledPersonalIssuesForAReason she has shown little desire to shed any light on her origins]]. She is also [[spoiler:[[MurderInTheFamily a Kinslayer.]]]]
* DealWithTheDevil: After [[spoiler:Jaune]] is critically injured, she is desperate enough to save him to consider making a deal with [[spoiler:Salem]]. Thankfully [[AvertedTrope averted]] as [[spoiler:Jaune]] convinces her not to.
* DeceasedParentsAreTheBest: While not a whole lot is known about them, we do know that Blake's parents loved her a great deal, were very protective of her, and most likely died trying to give her the life she wanted.
* DefrostingIceQueen: Over time. Blake starts out very reserved and terse with the main cast but after several months (and going through half a dozen life or death experiences) with them she starts to show them her softer, more caring side.
* EveryoneCanSeeIt: In the early books, her tendency to go out of her way to help [[spoiler:Jaune]] is commented on by several members of the guild.
* EnterStageWindow: She has taken to doing this when she spends the night with [[spoiler:Jaune]] in order to avoid getting caught slipping into his room. [[RightThroughTheWall Not that anyone in the guild is unaware of what's going on.]]
* EyeScream: Inflicts one on [[spoiler:Watts]], [[HoistByHisOwnPetard with his own dagger ''after'' he healed her]].
* {{Foil}}: Both Blake and Jaune act as this to each other. Both are people with troubled secrets that strive to overcome the prejudices of their inherent Classes but go about it in different ways. While Jaune is a low Level Blacksmith who is new to the larger world, Blake is a relatively high leveled Hero with experience in multiple societies. While Jaune tries to be a Knight, known for their honor and directness, but achieves this through deceit, Blake is openly an Assassin known for their underhanded and backstabbing methods. While Jaune grew up with a large and loving family, Blake was an only child [[DarkAndTroubledPast whose parents died when she was young.]] And while Jaune is socially awkward, yet is outgoing, Blake is much more reserved and anti-social. [[spoiler:This all ultimately culminates into them becoming a couple in the story.]]
* ICantBelieveAGuyLikeYouWouldNoticeMe: A variation of this occurs with Jaune. She reveals that even at the start of their friendship, she couldn't believe Jaune was genuine in wanting to associate with her and was just leading her on. [[spoiler:Even after becoming a couple it still took months of her witnessing [[KnightInShiningArmor Jaune's earnest and caring nature]] for her to get over her doubt to his true feelings. Once she does, [[TheirFirstTime she enthusiastically responds.]]]]
* ItDoesntMeanAnything: Invoked word for word regarding nearly every act of kindness and tenderness towards [[spoiler:Jaune, especially in regards to [[MustNotDieAVirgin nearly having sex]] in Atlas.]] However, it doesn't hold up for long.
* KnifeNut: Fights with a variety of knives and throwing daggers. [[spoiler:Later, Jaune gives her a pair of daggers he made in secret, both with a [[GeometricMagic rune of minor Constitution]] in order to better protect her.]]
* LuminescentBlush: Develops a bit of a tendency to do this later on around [[spoiler:Jaune]], especially when he says something especially corny/romantic.
* ProperlyParanoid: Becomes highly suspicious of Ozpin and the whole plan in stopping the Greycloaks [[spoiler:after Jaune goes missing after an attack on him and the New Dawn leader.]]
* [[AssassinsAreAlwaysBetrayed Rogues Are Always Betrayed]]: Her fear of this is one of the main obstacles to her closer relationship with the Hunters in general and [[spoiler:Jaune]] in particular.
* SecretKeeper: A reluctant one to Ellayne and Jaune. [[spoiler:As she's aware the Fighter did not pass the First Quest, but that Jaune lied that she did.]] She promises to keep the truth to herself only on Jaune's insistence.
* SexyWalk: Occasionally puts a little more swing in her hips [[spoiler:for Jaune,]] and he can't help but [[MaleGaze instantly notice.]]
* SixthRanger: Spent the first few books as a reluctant addition to The Hunters, until her hand was forced in Book 3 and she joined them officially.
* TakingTheBullet: When Jaune is grappling a higher level Paladin, [[spoiler:she tackles him out of the way when their opponent pulls a knife, leading to her being stabbed instead]].
* {{Tsundere}}: Being an Assassin, and thus distrusted and discriminated against, has forced her to put up a strong, uncaring front to the world, but inside she's driven by worry and affection towards Jaune and the others. [[spoiler:Becomes even more pronounced after she and Jaune start dating.]]
* ViolentlyProtectiveGirlfriend: [[spoiler:Blake has no trouble bluntly criticizing Jaune or shredding his ego, but the moment Qrow starts digging into his doubts and insecurities, she pulls a knife on the Druid. Also instantly throws a dagger at Salem when looming over him.]]
* VitriolicBestBuds: After some initially hostile encounters due to class rivalry, [[spoiler:and Weiss' father and younger brother being killed by an Assassin,]] she eventually becomes this with Weiss.
* YouAreBetterThanYouThinkYouAre: Gives this to Jaune as much as Ruby, whenever [[HeroicSelfDeprecation his doubts and low self-esteem are getting to him.]]

!! Weiss Schnee
Class: Mage

A proud and temperamental Mage that Jaune tries to form a party with on the First Quest, and fails spectacularly. Originally from the [[TheMagocracy Mage ruling]] Kingdom of Atlas, she came to Vale to become a Hero for unknown reasons.

----

* AnIcePerson: Though as a Mage she can potentially use a variety of elements, she primarily uses ice as her main form of magic.
* BlessedWithSuck: Her Passive skill, which makes her unable to use anything but a sword, denying her the ability to MinMax with staves like other Mage classes, and is the source of many either deriding or pitying her in the Mage-centric Atlas. What benefits this gives in return is not revealed. [[spoiler:That is, until the Ashari temple fight; Weiss has to fight her own mother, who's a traditional staff-wielding Mage. Her swordsmanship proves vital to staying alive; since Mages are traditionally ranged attackers, the easiest way to overwhelm them is getting in close.]]
* ControlFreak: Has a ''strong'' opinion on the proper order of things, and even specializes in control magic. [[spoiler:It's hinted that the trauma of Watts' betrayal of her mother and family has given her severe trust issues that fuel this.]]
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Hinted at this on the Annual Quest to Atlas, as only her sister Winter is seen and it's mentioned Ironwood raised both of them. Later revealed in Book 3 [[spoiler:that Watts, her mother's Sentinel, ended up murdering both her parents and younger brother, and attempted the same to her and Winter, for the purpose of having her mother for himself.]]
* DeceasedParentsAreTheBest: Though Weiss doesn't really talk about them much, all indications are that they were much more loving and involved with their children than their canon counterparts [[spoiler:before they were murdered by Watts while they tried to protect them.]]
* TheFace: Will often take the leading role for the guild when the situation calls for diplomacy, or when dealing with local authority figures like garrison commanders, and ruling nobility.
* {{Foil}}:
** To Blake. Both put up walls between themselves and others due to a combination of [[DarkAndTroubledPast past tragedies]] and being ostracized for being born with features they can't control (being an Assassin for Blake, [[BlessedWithSuck being forced to only use swords]] for Weiss). But while Blake is silent and anti-social, making it difficult to know her thoughts, Weiss is much, much more temperamental and outspoken, and won't hesitate to express her opinion on things.
** To her mother, Willow. [[spoiler:Willow was a support mage, who focused on buffing her allies at the expense of directly influencing battles. Weiss on the other hand, due to her past trauma at the hands of her mother's Sentinel and her subsequent trust issues, is a control mage, who seeks to control the field of battle to directly counter her opponents.]]
* HiddenDepths: Her introduction and abrasiveness give off the impression that she is still a member of the privileged elite who's been handed everything just as in canon, but is later revealed to have experienced her own share of hardships and tragedies before coming to Beacon.
* [[InterClassRomance Inter-Caste Romance]]: She and her sister are the result of one. Their mother, [[TheMagocracy a Mage of Atlas]], created a minor scandal when she married their father, a common Soldier.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: For all her haughty disdain towards those she doesn't immediately respect, or her biting remarks, Weiss is still a noble Hero and ultimately kind person who will save others even should it cost her greatly, [[spoiler:as seen when she unselfishly gives an extremely rare healing Elixir meant for her to a dying Ruby.]]
* LogicalWeakness: Weiss' ice-magic partially draws on her surroundings, such as the moisture in the air, so it is more taxing in areas with little to no moisture, such as the deserts of Vacuo.
* SquishyWizard: A critical drawback for being a Mage. If any journey requires long marches or climbs Weiss will most likely be the first to become exhausted and need a break. She'll never ask for things to be made easier, though.
* TraumaCongaLine: Weiss watches [[spoiler:her [[DeceasedParentsAreTheBest dead mom Willow]] be resurrected by her [[DarkAndTroubledPast once uncle-figure Arthur Watts.]] He then proceeds to [[KickTheDog grope Willow, boast about how the two of them will marry and have kids, and attack the Hunters with Willow aiding him.]] Throughout the ensuing fight, Willow is conscious enough to know exactly what she's doing and spends much of it in tears while apologizing for her actions. After killing her mother, Weiss then watches helplessly as her friend and fellow leader-figure in the Hunters is overwhelmed by a direct attack from [[EldritchAbomination Salem.]] He comes out unscathed, but in the process is revealed to have been perpetuating a lie about his class and (unknowingly) being in a pact with Salem the whole time. In her ensuing rant at Jaune, it's clear that her anger is masking an [[BrokenBird emotional breakdown.]] The next chapter shows Weiss apologizing for acting in the heat of the moment and allowing said breakdown to affect her words.]]
* VitriolicBestBuds: To both Yang and (after the Annual Quest) Blake. She regularly snipes and argues with the other two, but are clearly good friends.

!! Pyrrha Nikos
Class: Champion

A student from Mistral, and a member of the rare and powerful Prestige Class. She and Jaune briefly meet before the First Quest, and become good friends soon after.

----

* TheAce: As a Prestige class she's this in general, but especially for the Hunters Guild where her Class and relatively high stats allows her to serve as their best tank, one of their best damage dealers, and her more advanced training allows her to know what general tactics and formations are best for situations.
* AchievementInIgnorance: What initially convinces Pyrrha to become Jaune's friend is his having no clue what a Champion is, or why it's a big deal.
* BetterAsFriends: At first she doesn't display her canon feelings for Jaune despite their meeting much the same way, and his having no knowledge of her Class. Later revealed that she was initially interested, but her insecurities made her even more hesitant, and decided on this instead, [[spoiler:especially as she observes Jaune and Blake's growing relationship.]]
* CulturalCringe: Pyrrha is repeatedly embarrassed when the Hunter's encounter some of her homeland's more unusual customs, particularly those involving treating the King and royal family as divine beings.
* CursedWithAwesome: The way nearly everyone puts her on a pedestal simply for her class, has caused Pyrrha to regard being a Champion as this. Worse, being a Champion specifically, and not another Prestige Class, means all her skills are oriented for fighting by one's self, which exacerbates her loneliness.
* {{Foil}}: Turns out to be one to Cinder. Both are Mistralian Heroes given extraordinary opportunities and expectations due to being Prestige classes. But while Pyrrha felt increasingly isolated for all the attention and moved to Vale, Cinder thrives under it and proudly strives to carry out the burdens placed on her. [[spoiler:The difference is made even starker when it's revealed both were offered marriage to the crown prince, with Pyrrha politely rejecting the offer, and Cinder gratefully accepting.]]
* IdiotBall: Appeared to hold it whenever she was dealing with Torchwick. [[spoiler:Later revealed to be the result of Roman's Passive [[CharmPerson boosting his Charisma]], making her trust and listen to him more easily.]]
* IJustWantToBeNormal: Would have really preferred to be born a more common Class.
* IJustWantToHaveFriends: One of Pyrrha's driving motivations at the start of the story due to the social isolation inherent in her Class.
* InnocentlyInsensitive: Has trouble not referring to the Labour Caste by the more derogatory 'NPC' name without conscious effort. Though she's not alone in the group with this problem, it becomes more pronounced when her remark almost sets off a bar, [[spoiler:with tensions high due to the village being recently conquered by Mistral.]]
* OneWomanArmy: Being a Prestige Class, she has the potential to be this at even a modest level. Being a Champion, her skills are even more specifically designed to allow her to fight single-handedly against multitudes.
* PoorCommunicationKills: Early on, Pyrrha kept the details of her Class and Passive secret as she feared that she would be isolated from the rest of the Hunters once the extent of her abilities were brought to light. This almost lead to the deaths of the entire guild while fighting atop the Fang when Pyrrha, using her [[SuperMode Passive]], proceeded to hold off their foe single-handedly before Nora, not knowing the [[CursedWithAwesome details of Pyrrha's Class]], tries to assist her. This lead to the incapacitation and near death of almost the entire group.
* SuperMode: What her passive - She Who Stands Alone - turns out to be. It essentially gives her such a massive stat boost, she can perform feats well above what her Level would suggest, but only under the condition she fights an enemy while not being close to an ally. The range of how far she has to be from an ally is quite high, and as a result she is unable to have any help while using it.
* WillfullyWeak: Pyrrha's Passive drastically increases her combat capabilities so long as she is fighting alone. However, she hardly ever makes use of it due to her desire to [[IJustWantToBeNormal fit in]] and [[IJustWantToHaveFriends fight alongside the rest of the Hunters]].

!!Yang Xiao Long
Class: Brawler

Ruby's older half-sister. A generally fun loving young woman, her carefree attitude is always set aside when it comes to her younger sister's wellbeing.

----

* AngerBornOfWorry: She is very frustrated at Ruby's tendency to [[ChronicHeroSyndrome jump in to save others]] without considering the danger first, and won't hesitate to argue and yell in Ruby's face in front of everyone.
* BigSisterInstinct: Far more so than in canon. To the point it's Ruby that looks to get some space from Yang rather than the other way around.
* BoisterousBruiser: She wouldn't be Yang if she wasn't.
* TheGadfly: Really enjoys snarking and teasing others, [[spoiler:especially Jaune and Blake when it comes to their love life.]]
* HardDrinkingPartyGirl: Out of the entire guild, she's the one who enjoys going to pubs and drinking the most.
* HiddenDepths: For awhile she seemed as carefree as she does in early canon. Then we learn of her bitterness over Summer's tendency to relentlessly throw herself into danger till it killed her, and her constant fear of Ruby doing the same.
* MaleGaze: Is aware that men tend to focus on her chest, [[ShowSomeLeg and will even emphasize it to her advantage.]]
* ParentalNeglect: What she has come to regard Summer's constant questing to save others until dying on one. As she puts it, Ruby remembers Summer reading them bedtime stories. Yang remembers their father having to ''force'' Summer to stay home long enough to do so in the first place, not to mention getting her to read those stories.
* PlayingWithFire: Her fists can ignite into flames due to a Skill.
* {{Plothole}}: Yang, who started Beacon at around Level 15, is later revealed to be Level [[spoiler:40]] in Book 7. This is despite the fact that: she wasn't at the defense of Stoneskeep, she wasn't involved in Tyrian's death, she only fought Grimm at Magnis, she was one of eight people involved in [[spoiler:killing Watts, she didn't contribute to the deaths of Willow or Cinder]], it has been repeatedly said that farming in the Emerald forest is a wasted effort past level thirty, and she can't gain exp through other methods like Jaune. This means that Yang seemingly ascended almost a dozen Levels offscreen.
* SecretKeeper: Is one in regards to the secrets of Ruby's class.
* ShowSomeLeg: Knows that she's very beautiful, and has no trouble using her looks to make men more cooperative.
* VitriolicBestBuds: To Weiss. She regularly gets on the Mage's nerves and argues with her, but clearly considers her a friend. Jaune speculates it's because Weiss' reactions amuse her.
* WhatTheHellHero: Delivers a pretty scathing one to Ruby after the Eldon Quest. When it was discovered [[spoiler:that what was actually attacking the caravans was bandits instead of Grimm,]] yet Ruby refused to retreat despite her [[FragileSpeedster fragility]] and promise to her sister to be careful, it prompts Yang to call her out on her [[ChronicHeroSyndrome heroics]] and how actions like that are what led to [[MissingMom Summer's death]].

!! Nora Valkyrie
Class: Barbarian.

A cheerful and ditzy young woman Jaune meets during the First Quest. She is rarely seen without the company of her best friend, Ren.

----

* BloodKnight: Freely admits getting lost in battle rage often.
* ChildhoodFriendRomance: Like in canon, she and Ren have been at each other's side for quite some time. Unlike canon, she is rather more aggressive in trying to take things to a deeper level.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: It's Nora.
* CordonBleughChef: Frequently tries to add random ingredients to whatever Ren cooks.
* DumbMuscle: Subverted. While she is expected to be this due to her class, and though she's not really book smart, she is very knowledgeable about tracking and can identify Grimm from what claw marks they make.
* LivingEmotionalCrutch: [[spoiler:She acts as one to Ren, as her exuberance seems to pierce through his Passive and helps keep him grounded.]]
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: Becomes remarkably calm and to the point [[spoiler:after Ren is injured by a Greycloak on a quest.]] The only reason Jaune knows immediately that it's not ''more'' serious is because he doesn't see Nora in tears.

!! Lie Ren
Class: Monk

A long time companion of Nora and the only other male in the main cast aside from Jaune. He and Jaune meet on the First Quest, and quickly pair up at the start of the year when they are assigned to the boy's dorm.

----

* BadassBookworm: Is a Tier 1 Hero, and will often be found doing research on various subjects.
* BetrayalByInaction: How Ren feels in regards to his actions towards [[spoiler:Jaune]] after it was revealed that he [[spoiler:was actually a Blacksmith]]. Ren admits to having been able to see the confrontation from a unique perspective due to his Passive and that he could have helped remedy the situation or at least mediate things so that tensions didn't escalate as severely as they did, but that he failed to do so because of his own cowardice.
* BewareTheQuietOnes: Is as quiet and unassuming as in canon, but we later learn that being a Monk makes him a Tier 1 class, whose stats and skills, while specialized, are generally superior to Tier 2 and Tier 3 classes.
* BlessedWithSuck: [[spoiler:His Passive -Balance of Emotions- allows him to think with a clear mind unconstrained by emotional interference, but at the cost of it keeping him from feeling much of anything ''at all''. It's also always active, so he can only feel emotions for a few brief moments before it reasserts itself, and sends him back into a blank state.]]
* ChefOfIron: Being on the road a lot with Nora necessitated him becoming a decent cook, and he'll often be the one to prepare meals on quests, or aide in the guildhall kitchen.
* ChildhoodFriendRomance: Nora's pushing for this, but it's unknown what Ren thinks of it, or if he's even aware of her feelings.
* DisproportionateRetribution: Calmly threatens to stab Jaune if he continues [[spoiler:gushing over Blake being his girlfriend]] after hearing about it for a week straight.
* EmotionSuppression: [[spoiler:What his Passive -Balance of Emotions- turns out to be. All emotions, both positive and negative, are suppressed to the point he feels nothing. He is able to have emotions, but his Passive will always suppress it back down after a few moments.]]
* HiddenDepths: For the first four books, he doesn't seem different to his canon self. [[spoiler:Then we learn his Passive skill enforces a limited form of sociopathy on him, with his ability to maintain his humanity and connection with people thanks only to the brief moments of emotion he can manage, as well as having Nora as a companion for so long.]]
* InnocentlyInsensitive: When Ren first meets Ruby and Pyrrha, he later tries to research their classes in a tome that gives info on what Class abilities and general personalities are like out of curiosity. When Jaune says it's better to find out who they are as people from them, and implicitly points out he's looking to prejudge them, Ren closes the book.
* {{Irony}}: Ren reveals that a Monk is a Class focused on achieving "balance", however it is also noted as being a Tier 1 Class, which means their stat distribution is inherently specialized and uneven compared to the more balanced Tier 2 classes.
* KissOfLife: Inadvertently gives this to Jaune while performing CPR, and Jaune waking up into it [[spoiler:while mistaking him for Blake.]]
* KnifeNut: Fights with a pair of daggers.

!!Velvet Scarlatina
Class: Tailor

A rabbit Faunus and member of Beacon's large Labour Caste staff responsible for the upkeep of the school. She joins the Hunters Guild when it's formed as it's Seneschal.

----

* AnimalMotifs: Instead of the cute bunny girl seen in canon, she is initially portrayed as more of a scared rabbit.
* ExtremeDoormat: Having no combat abilities like in canon, she is far more skittish and submissive. She doesn't even look Jaune in the eye when they first meet, as Jaune is still disguised as a Hero. Later grows out of this as she continues to work for the guild.
* SilkHidingSteel: Develops out of her nervousness, and into this when it comes to her duties, and puts her foot down when it comes to cooking and tracking mud on her floors.
* TeamMom: Quickly becomes this for the guild, happily taking care of all their domestic needs, sewing new clothes and repairing old ones, and waking up the more stubborn members from sleep.
* TearsOfFear: Is openly weeping in fear [[spoiler:after members of Torchwick's guild beat her up, drive her out of Beacon, and threaten her life into keeping quiet.]]
* WorkingClassHero: Is the only member of the guild who does Labour class duties, and joined when they desperately needed someone to serve as their Seneschal, effectively saving them. Since then she has done everything in her power to support the guild, and we later learn she is the only source of income for her single mother and two little brothers.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Friends and Allies]]
!!Headmaster Ozpin
Class: Sage

The Headmaster of Beacon Academy. He is a strong proponent of peace and unity against the Grimm.

----

* AdultsAreUseless:
** Played with. As Jaune and the rest of the Hunters Guild learn about Torchwick's history of conning students, they frequently wonder how Ozpin or any of the other teachers haven't caught on or done anything about it. [[spoiler:Later is revealed to be justified due to learning of Neo's Illusionist abilities making it easy to operate under false identities and frame others, as well as Ozpin being distracted by outside threats.]]
** Played more straight when Ozpin frequently sends the Hunters to battle the Greycloaks, despite them being under-leveled students, with the justification that he can't trust anyone else.
** Played straight again when he sends the Hunters into the middle of Vacuo without outfitting them with proper gear or fully conveying to them the nature of the threats Vacuo possesses, such as sandstorms and the various types of Grimm.
* DemotedToExtra: As a consequence of the story being told almost solely from Jaune's POV, he's rarely seen. More over with the canon plot thread of his and Salem's millennium spanning secret-war being removed from this story, his role is also significantly reduced as a result.
* IdiotBall:
** In Book 6, with the whole plan [[spoiler:for a peace conference between Vale and Mistral]] not even considering the fact [[spoiler:that bringing an invading Mistral force into the heart of Vale territory is a prime opportunity for an attack.]]
** Holds it a few times in Book 7.
*** First, he and the King devise a plan to have [[spoiler:Jaune infiltrate the Greycloaks]] while not even considering that the Greycloaks may be interested in acquiring [[spoiler:[[UltimateBlacksmith the highest Level Blacksmith in the history of Remnant]]]] for themselves and would be able to easily acquire and isolate said individual considering they are known to have a highly skilled teleporter on their side.
*** The second is a downplayed example. When [[spoiler:Jaune and Lisa]] go into hiding, Ozpin sends the rest of the Hunters to comb the city and ascertain their location using their Whisper Stones, but [[spoiler:Jaune's only viable hiding spot is in the Emerald Forest outside of Beacon, and, even if he were hiding in the city, he can't use his Whisper Stone in Vale lest he compromise his mission.]]
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: When one of the Hunters Guild, [[spoiler:Jaune]], is forced to go into hiding after the failed assassination attempt of [[spoiler:Lisa Lavender]], Ozpin devises a plan for the rest of the Hunters to comb the city of Vale using their Whisper Stones in order to establish communication with their missing member. While this plan is reasonably well thought out, it fails to account for [[spoiler:Jaune actually hiding in the Emerald Forest, which is directly adjacent to Beacon, and that he can't accept the Guild's transmissions when in the company of Lisa Lavender for fear of compromising his mission. This means that none of the guild members are at the Hunters Lodge when Jaune tries to contact them and he is unable to accept any of their calls while accompanying Lisa in Vale. This lack of communication almost lead to Jaune's death when he and Lisa are ambushed by a group of high level assassins after a New Dawn meeting.]]
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: Normally a stoic and unflappable leader, Ozpin looks aghast when [[spoiler:Cinder kills the King of Vale at a peace ceremony]].
* QuestGiver: As the Headmaster of Beacon, he assigns all students their Annual Quests personally in order for them to graduate the year. He's also the main source for the Hunters guild; bringing them several quests related to combating the Greycloaks directly.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: Does everything he can to assure that peace is maintained between the kingdoms, warns his students against taking dangerous risks but still allows them to do so if they feel it is necessary, and [[spoiler:recompenses the Hunters with a free guildhall and other amenities after he discovers what [[LoanShark Torchwick]] had been doing right under his nose]].

!!Glynda Goodwitch
Class: Warlock

The Deputy Headmistress of Beacon. She teaches advanced magic, first aid, and oversees all combat classes.

----

* AsskickingEqualsAuthority: All of Beacon's teachers are required to have: served for at least 15 years, a Level of at least 60, and a record of distinguished achievements. [[spoiler:And she proves her credentials in her fight against Watts.]]
* BigDamnHeroes: [[spoiler:Shows up with Tsune to save Jaune, Coco, and the others inside Torchwick's guild before they can be killed by Watts.]]
* LadyOfBlackMagic: Comes with being a Warlock and specializing in curses.
* PlayingWithFire: Her favored and perhaps most deadly element based on her confrontation with [[spoiler:Watts]].
* RedBaron: The Black Warlock of Vale.
* ThinkingUpPortals: Can conjure up a magic portal to transport people from place to place, though she needs assistance to power one strong enough to transport hundreds of initiates for a few hours during their First Quest, and is limited in range to the very edges of the kingdom.

!!Bartholomew Oobleck
Class: Alchemist

A professor at Beacon who specializes in the more academic aspects of being a Hero.

----

* MrExposition: So far his main appearances revolve around explaining the nature of stat distributions and the responsibilities of the Grand Treaty.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: [[spoiler:He's normally quite calm and matter of fact in his instruction, but when war breaks out between Vale and Mistral, he snaps at the Beacon students for their vocal protestation to protect the invading Mistral forces as well as Vale's, and yells that if any student doesn't want to uphold the Grand Treaty in it's entirety then they can leave Beacon and never come back.]]

!!Tsune
Class: Priest

A fox Faunus, and member of Beacon's staff. She serves as the primary healer for the entire school.

----

* BigDamnHeroes: [[spoiler:Shows up with Glynda to save Jaune, Coco, and the others inside Torchwick's guild before they can be killed by Watts.]]
* CombatSadomasochist: Is really fond of hearing her opponents (or anyone) scream, and is not at all bothered by receiving pain in turn.
* GenreSavvy: She is well aware that healers are high priority targets and knows how to take care of herself in a fight.
* KungFuWizard: Knows that a Priest is [[SquishyWizard weak in close combat]] and [[ShootTheMedicFirst prone to being immediately targeted,]] and has learned basic martial arts in order to compensate (and is hinted to be standard practice for all healers).
* LightIsGood: She wields a variety of light based spells and healing magic, and is definitely one of the good guys. [[{{Sadist}} It's just that her interests are a little... disturbing.]]
* LittleBitBeastly: Is a fox Faunus.
* MadDoctor: She'll heal you, but she enjoys doing it in the most painful way possible.
* TheMedic: Serves as Beacon's primary healer.
* OriginalCharacter: Is a character Coeur created to serve as Beacon's nurse in all his works.
* ShoutOut: To the various eastern myths about kitsunes, with the most prominent ones causing mass pain and torture.

!!Coco Adel
Class: Archer

An acquaintance Jaune first meets at the auction house interested in purchasing a bow. She is a member of the Mercenary's Guild, the largest guild in Beacon.

----

* AsskickingEqualsAuthority: The best Archer in the Mercenary's Guild [[spoiler:and the guild leader]].
* PragmaticHero: She has no qualms about boosting to gain levels, has several members of the Mercenary's guild start a fire in the forest as a distraction, and [[spoiler:tries to fight Torchwick as a group]].
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: Is this as [[spoiler:the head of the Mercenary's Guild]]. While she is sympathetic to the plight that The Hunters find themselves in, she still refuses to place her underlings in danger of expulsion, even if they would likely receive a hefty monetary reward. [[RevengeBeforeReason Once she finds out who their opponents are however...]]
* ReluctantRuler: [[spoiler:Absolutely did not want to be the guild leader of The Mercenary's Guild, but accepted it in the end.]]
* RevengeBeforeReason: She is entirely willing to risk almost certain expulsion and demotion to the Soldier Caste if it means she can get revenge on [[spoiler:Torchwick]] for what he did to her, Yatsuhashi, and Fox during their first year.

!!James Ironwood
Class: Mage

Lord of Atlas' Grand Academy of Magic and the Archmage of Atlas. He is a close friend of Headmaster Ozpin.

----

* AdaptationalNiceGuy: While canon Ironwood is courteous and well intentioned, this version is much more easy going and openly friendly due to having no military background.
* TheArchmage: Ironwood's title as the strongest mage in Atlas.
* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: Perhaps the most influential figure in Atlas and the only known Hero capable of creating "Ironwood" trees and [[spoiler:life]].
* ParentalSubstitute: [[spoiler:Took in Winter and Weiss after the deaths of their father, brother, and mother.]]
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: He [[spoiler:took Weiss and Winter]] under his own protection to prevent any more assassination attempts, sent a full team of Beacon students solely to investigate an issue as a neutral third party so as to prevent a political incident, and immediately [[spoiler:[[BigDamnHeroes sent reinforcements]] when he noticed what he thought was a distress signal coming from the top of the Fang]].
* RedBaron: He has two: "Archmage", and "Ironwood".
* ThinkingUpPortals: Like Glynda, he can also make a magic portal, [[spoiler:which is how he is able to send Penny to help Jaune and the others in time on the Fang.]]

!!Winter Schnee
Class: Fencer

Weiss' older sister, who she looks up to with great respect. She serves as the personal Sentinel to Archmage Ironwood.

----

* [[AdaptationalNiceGuy Adaptational Nice Girl]]: Is much more openly affectionate and emotional, having no need to maintain the strict military discipline of her canon self.
* BodyguardingABadass: Is the Sentinel to the most powerful Mage in Atlas.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Shares one with Weiss, as we later learn [[spoiler:that her mother's Sentinel, Watts, ended up murdering both her parents and younger brother, and attempted the same to her and Weiss, for the purpose of having her mother for himself.]]
* [[InterClassRomance Inter-Caste Romance]]: She and her sister are the result of one. Their mother, [[TheMagocracy a Mage of Atlas]], created a minor scandal when she married their father, a common Soldier.

!!Kaedin Sand
Class: Mage

A Mage and researcher of Atlas Academy. He accompanies the Hunters on their Quest in Atlas.

----

* DishingOutDirt: Most of his magic is earth based.
* DrowningMySorrows: [[spoiler:Is last seen having several drinks, mourning the death of his best friend Viktor.]]
* EscortMission: Is the subject of one while trying to find the cause of the natural disasters on The Fang.
* MrExposition: Gives a brief history of Atlas, how it's [[TheMagocracy Mage ruling class]] came to power, and why Assassins are feared and maligned more than the usual Class rivalry.
* NiceGuy: Is far more reasonable and personable than his Sentinel, showing no hostility towards Blake, nor holding the guild's youth and inexperience against them.
* OriginalCharacter

!!Viktor Swansteel
Class: Knight

A Knight of Atlas and the Sentinel to Kaedin Sand. He accompanies the Hunters on their Quest in Atlas with his Mage charge.

----

* AssholeVictim: He's so unpleasant from the moment he's introduced to [[spoiler:spitefully cursing Jaune and the others before Merlot kills him,]] that one doesn't feel too sorry for him.
* BigDamnHeroes: Has this as a skill, as his Passive -Vanguard- gives him a massive stat boost whenever an ally is moments away from being killed. However, it only briefly works, so he must quickly choose to either [[LightningBruiser attack the enemy or defend the ally while it's active]].
* CharmPerson: Subverted. It's noted that a Knight is supposed to have a high Charisma score that makes them this, but he's such a massive asshole to Jaune and the rest that they can't help but be put off by him.
* GoodIsNotNice: He's a Knight working to stop the disasters occurring on the Fang, and is dedicated to protecting his long time Mage charge and friend. He's also a harsh and demanding jerk to anyone who is not a social equal.
* HalfTheManHeUsedToBe: [[spoiler:Gets torn in half by a Grimm transformed Merlot.]]
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Played with. Kaedin describes his more admirable qualities, explains his [[AngerBornOfWorry harsh treatment of Jaune and the rest as concern over his Mage charge]], and [[spoiler:puts himself between them and a Grimm transformed Merlot several times before dying;]] however, [[InformedAttribute we never see any indication of this from Viktor himself]], and he also [[spoiler:curses Jaune and the others with his last breathe before dying.]] So it's left somewhat ambiguous if this is just the bias of an old friend or not.
* OriginalCharacter
* PlayingWithFire: Has a skill that ignites his sword with fire.

!!Penny
Class: Construct

A happy and upbeat girl that assists the Hunters during their time in Atlas.

----

* BigDamnHeroes: Saves the party when fighting [[spoiler:the transformed Merlot on top of the Fang]].
* KillItThroughItsStomach: How she dispatches [[spoiler:Merlot]]. As external damage seemed to be too superficial, she hopped down his mouth and impaled him from the inside.
* MajorInjuryUnderreaction: As a Construct, her only reaction to being brutally impaled through the chest is to tell the offender that that was rather rude of them.
* RobotGirl: The magical variant. While there are many constructs in Atlas, she is the only one capable of independent thought and reasoning as she was created by [[TheArchmage Ironwood]].
* WalkingArmory: In place of her canon floating swords and lasers, she instead has the ability to create any type of medieval weapon she wants from her magical energy.

!!Oscar
Class: Farmer

A Labour Caste resident of Eldon who befriended Ruby and Jaune during their stay there.

----

* DemotedToExtra: Goes from being a significant member of the series from Season 4 onwards, to little more than a cameo appearance on a short quest Jaune and Ruby take.
* HopelessSuitor: Clearly has a crush on Ruby despite her being a member of the Hero Caste, and therefore someone he has no chance at being with due to their radically different lives leaving little to no chance of ever interacting again.

!! Qrow Branwen
Class: Druid

Yang and Ruby's uncle. He meets and aides the guild on their quest to investigate Greycloak activity in Mistral.

----

* AngerBornOfWorry: Though it's more subtle than Yang, Qrow is also concerned about Ruby's tendency [[ChronicHeroSyndrome to jump into trouble in order to save people,]] and subsequently starts in on Jaune who he initially thinks is a bad influence on her.
* {{BFS}}: Like in canon, though it's a scimitar-sickle blade rather than the [[SwissArmyWeapon sword-scythe-shotgun weapon]] he wields.
* BlessedWithSuck: Was regarded as this for being born as a magic using class by his tribe who valued physical strength above all else. As such, he was forced to focus on melee abilities to the point his magic became all but useless.
* CainAndAbel: The Abel to Raven's Cain.
* FriendToAllLivingThings: In a way. Being a Druid he has an innate ability that makes mundane animals see him as this, but he mostly uses it to lure in animals to eat. When Jaune calls him out on this, he dismisses it as providing scavengers with food, since they too are living creatures.
* HealingFactor: Is shown to possess a weak one thanks to one of the few spells he is capable of casting.
* HorribleJudgeOfCharacter: When it comes to Jaune. When learning about the many troubles the guild already has faced, he initially believes the blonde knight to be a glory seeker taking advantage of Ruby's idealism and naivete to drag her into danger, though he later admits to being wrong. He then again pegs Jaune as a FearlessFool due to being [[HeroicSafeMode far too calm and focused]] during a Grimm siege, not realizing it's due to an as yet unknown skill than a character trait.
* OneManArmy: He's at a high enough level that he mentions that he could slaughter a moderately garrisoned village -Soldiers, Labourers, and all- single handily, provided that they didn't all rush him at once.
* SecretKeeper: Like Yang, he too serves as this for Ruby when it comes to the specifics of her class.
* VoluntaryShapeshifting: Like in canon, his class allows him to turn into a crow for surveillance and scouting, however it's implied this is the only animal he can turn into due to his poor magic ability.

!!Cinder Fall
Class: Elementalist

A Hero of Mistral, that Jaune and the others meet on their Quest to investigate Greycloak activity. She is a member of the rare Prestige class, and enjoys great status and reverence in her home kingdom.

----

* TheAce: Is this due to being a Prestige class, and quickly establishes herself as one of the most powerful damage dealers in the story [[PlayingWithFire with her fire spells.]]
* AdaptationalHeroism: Is far more noble and heroic than in canon. WordOfGod attributes this to her class and status [[spoiler:as the future Queen of Mistral]] already granting her everything she wants. [[spoiler:Even her attacking the King of Vale at the PeaceConference is only done with great reluctance and on the order of [[CharmPerson the King of Mistral]]]].
* AsskickingEqualsAuthority: Quickly proves herself able to kick a ton of ass, and later reveals that she has the authority to match [[spoiler:being engaged to the crown prince of Mistral.]]
* BigDamnHeroes: Saves Jaune on multiple occasions.
* BurningWithAnger: She has a temper, and a tendency to [[PlayingWithFire let her fire abilities loose]] when she loses control of it.
* DoubleMeaning: Her last words to Jaune before the defense of [[spoiler:Stoneskeep]] take on an entirely new meaning once Cinder reveals [[spoiler:that she knew right from the start that Jaune wasn't a Knight.]]
-->"You're a Knight, aren't you? It's time to act like it."
* FaceDeathWithDignity: [[spoiler:Even as she lays dying, Cinder refuses to summon [[JerkassGenie Salem]] for a chance to fix her mistakes with a wish, knowing the cost would be too high.]]
* TheFatalist: [[spoiler:Admits to being this for her part in betraying Beacon and breaking the Grand Treaty, as she felt there was nothing she, as a member of the Hero Caste, could do in the face of Mistral's Nobles' greed and callousness. Though Jaune notes the [[CharmPerson Mistralian King's Charisma]] has a part in influencing her, she states that she may have been able to resist it had she believed herself able.]]
* {{Foil}}: Revealed to be one to Pyrrha. Both are Mistralian Heroes given extraordinary opportunities and expectations due to being Prestige classes. While Cinder thrives under it and proudly strives to carry out the burdens placed on her, Pyrrha felt increasingly isolated for all the attention and moved to Vale to escape the pressure. [[spoiler:The difference is made even starker when it's revealed both were offered marriage to the crown prince, with Cinder gratefully accepting after Pyrrha politely rejected the offer]].
* GoOutWithASmile: [[spoiler:Jaune apologizing for not being able to save Cinder even though she was his enemy brings a smile to her face as she dies wondering WhatCouldHaveBeen if she had met [[TheHero him]] sooner.]]
* GoodIsNotNice: While she's [[AdaptationalHeroism far more noble and well-intentioned than in canon]], she's still Cinder. Thus she has a tendency to make her enemies suffer if she feels they deserve it, and can be rather domineering and authoritative to allies.
* MagicKnight: What an Elementalist essentially is, being proficient in both melee and magic, with the only drawback being limited to using only a single type of elemental magic.
* OneWomanArmy: Proves it [[spoiler:when she summons a Phoenix to destroy an invading horde of Grimm.]]
* PetTheDog: She does this after [[spoiler:Jaune is outed as a Blacksmith and is ostracized by the rest of the guild after an emotionally trying battle against Watts and Willow, Weiss' mother. While she does believe that what he did was ultimately foolhardy and will likely cause him great trouble in the future, she is able to understand the reasons why he did it in the first place, comparing it to how her own Prestige Class affects her own life, and thus she does respect that he was able to fight against his fate, even if only for a while. Sadly, as she sees it, YouCantFightFate, and while she does offer him a chance to at least live as a Hero in private by having him join her entourage due to her future position as Queen of Mistral, she can't change the system itself and ultimately he would only be able to live as a slightly more important NPC. While she is most likely this due to not being as emotionally tied to the situation as the Hunters are, she comes off much better by comparison due to her willingness to hear things out at the moment]]
* PlayingWithFire: As an Elementalist, she can only cast fire spells.
* PoliticallyActivePrincess: [[spoiler:As the fiance to the prince of Mistral]], Cinder goes to great lengths to open diplomatic channels with Ozpin to ensure that the two of them have a chance to [[spoiler:negotiate an end to the Mistral-Vale War.]]
* RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething: As the [[spoiler:future Queen of Mistral]], Cinder spends a large amount of her time on missions to ensure the safety of her country, either through fighting hordes of Grimm or by opening diplomatic channels to ensure peaceful relations with other kingdoms. Her behavior stands in sharp contrast to the last [[spoiler:[[DirtyCoward Queen of Mistral.]]]]
* TheScapegoat: [[spoiler:What Mistral tries to paint Cinder as following the events of her death so as to save face, just as they did with [[FallenHero Tyrian.]] The King of Vale refuses to let such a thing stand and forces Mistral to accept War Guilt for their atrocities.]]
* SorryThatImDying: [[spoiler:After she [[TakingTheBullet shields the King of Mistral,]] Cinder apologizes to Jaune for everything that had gone wrong during the PeaceConference as well as her inability to resist the commands of her king.]]
* SuperpowerLottery: Won it ''big time.'' Not only is she a Prestige Class, making her stats and skills better than other classes, but by also having magic she's capable of killing multitudes of Grimm and other enemies quickly, letting her gain Exp much faster and easier than even a pure melee using Prestige class like Pyrrha.
* TakingTheBullet: [[spoiler:Protects her king with her own body when Jaune tries to run him through for his treachery.]]
* VillainRespect: [[spoiler:While not so much a villain as she is someone forced to fight against Jaune due to the orders of [[CharmPerson her King]], Cinder can't help but praise Jaune for both his determination and his ferocity and confesses that she admires him all the more for daring to fight against his destiny.]]
* WorthyOpponent: Cinder's view of [[spoiler:Jaune]]. The feeling is entirely mutual.
-->"Even before this, I respected you more than I cared to admit. Your determination. Your ferocity. Discovering that you were [[spoiler:but a Blacksmith]] did nothing to change that. If anything, I admired it all the more. I admired you."

!! Ellayne [[spoiler:Rainart]]
Class: Fighter

A Beacon student a year behind the Hunters, who Jaune meets just before her First Quest during initiation. She is the younger sister to [[spoiler:the King's Seneschal, Hazel Rainart.]]

----

* TheApprentice: She takes private sparring lessons from Jaune, under Ms. Goodwitch's suggestion.
* BigBrotherWorship: Ellayne absolutely adores her older brother [[spoiler:Hazel]] for all that he did to allow her to follow her dreams of becoming a Hero.
* BladeOnAStick: Fights with a spear.
* BreakoutCharacter: The author has stated that he has revised his plans for Ellayne so as to give her a more prominent role in the story due to her [[EnsembleDarkHorse unexpected popularity.]] See CanonCharacterAllAlong for one example of said revision.
* CanonCharacterAllAlong: She seems to be [[spoiler:the younger sister of Hazel Rainart who died in canon while under Ozpin's supervision.]]
* TheCutie: A young, innocent and idealistic girl whose eagerness to become a Hero prompts Jaune to personally look after her during her time at Beacon. She even cutely refers to Jaune as "Master".
* DarkSecret: [[spoiler:She actually fails her First Quest, and isn't suppose to be in Beacon.]]
* {{Fangirl}}: Has put Jaune on something of a pedestal after he rescues her, much to his embarrassment.
* {{Foil}}: To Jaune. Both are Heroes attending Beacon while [[DarkSecret hiding the fact they technically shouldn't be.]] But while Jaune is actually a Labour Caste member who defeated a Grimm too strong for initiates by seeking help, and thus passed the First Quest, Ellayne is a genuine Hero class [[spoiler:that was overwhelmed by several weak Grimm by being on her own, and thus failed the First Quest, but is let in anyway due to Jaune lying for her.]]
* TheGlomp: Gives one to Jaune at their second meeting for saving her life, [[spoiler:and lying so that she could stay in Beacon.]]
* PuppyDogEyes: When asking Jaune to spar with her, she hits him with a wide, sorrowful look. Naturally, he agrees.
* TearsOfJoy:
** Is so relieved to be saved by Jaune during her First Quest that she starts crying.
** Does so again once she sees Jaune alive and well after the Defense of Magnis.
* TheUnfavourite: Her parents always favored her brother over her, both for his Class and for his high position in the royal court.

!! Isaac Corvo
Class: Guardian

A General in Mistral's army which the guild is tasked with defending.

----

* DecliningPromotion: He actually passed the First Quest but became a Soldier voluntarily due to [[FamilyHonor his family's long tradition of service]].
* TheFundamentalist: He truly believes in his God-King and sees [[spoiler:the war with Vale]] as an opportunity to spread his worship.
* HeroicSacrifice: Once he learns that negativity is what is required to summon Salem, [[spoiler:He freely walks into the Greycloaks' sacrificial pyre with a smile on his face and feelings of love for his king, country, soldiers, family, and friends in his heart. The positive emotions [[EmotionEater repel Salem]] and [[TooSpicyForYogSothoth put an end to the ritual]].]]
* OriginalCharacter
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: He tries to comfort Jaune several times and is shown to care about his soldier's well being. While he is willing to do his duty to his country, he is conflicted about sending his men into a battle he knows will result in significant loss of life.

!! Sun Wukong
Class: Monk

Chieftain of the Wukong sept of the Del'Ashari tribe. He meets the Hunters Guild during their quest in Vacuo.

----

* AssKickingEqualsAuthority: The strongest person in the Del'Ashari is the leader. Whether they want to be or not.
* BareFistedMonk: Like in canon, but is now his actual Class.
* TheChainsOfCommanding: Subverted. While he's a chief of a large group of people the position is largely symbolic, and he's able to pass it off in order to join Jaune and the others on their quest.
* DemotedToExtra: While a regularly occurring character throughout RWBY, here he's only seen for the Vacuo Quest, and receives less characterization than some OCs.
* TheLeader: Introduced as the chieftain of a portion of a larger Vacuo tribe.
* MrExposition: Explains the history of Vacuo, as well as the Del'Ashari's tribal duty of [[ThingsManWasNotMeantToKnow making sure it's secrets stay buried.]]
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: [[spoiler:Despite the hostile introduction his tribe had with the guild, and the prior bad experience he had with Roman, Neo, and Watts, he's willing to talk things out with Jaune and the others.]]
* ReluctantRuler: He freely admits he doesn't particularly want or like the responsibility of leading the tribe.

!!Faith

The horse that Jaune is always saddled with while at Beacon, despite the fact that she seems to [[HorsingAround do her best to make him suffer.]]

----

* CoolHorse: Faith is a black courser, a swift and strong horse typically used in war, and Jaune states that she is of prime pedigree seeing as she is of [[HeroAcademy Beacon.]] She is also fully capable of [[spoiler:crushing an enemy soldier's skull beneath her hooves given the slightest opportunity.]]
* EvilDetectingDog: A potential reason she is always [[spoiler:so hostile to Jaune as she does her utmost to dismount and harass him as long as he is wearing [[{{MacGuffin}} Salem's amulet]] but is very comforting and protective of him once said amulet is [[WhiteMagic purified.]]]]
* HorsingAround: Has ''quite'' the attitude when it comes to Jaune.
* MoodyMount: Tends to do her utmost to harry Jaune but can be sympathetic to him on occasion, is smart enough to concoct schemes (according to Jaune), and is very gentle with his sisters when he visits his hometown.

!!Galan ap' Falar III

The High King of Vale.

----

* DistressedDude: [[spoiler:Is attacked and wounded by Cinder, and has to be rescued by Jaune.]]
* HandWave: Does this frequently in Book 7 for the decisions made in Book 6. [[spoiler: Also does this for Jaune's breaking the whole Caste system by entering Beacon as a Blacksmith, rendering the whole legal and social consequences sighted throughout the story moot.]]
* IdiotBall: Held this constantly [[spoiler:during the Vale-Mistral war.]]
* InnocentlyInsensitive: Dismisses the notion of the Labour Caste rebelling so long as the Noble Caste doesn't abuse their authority, not understanding how the Labour Caste may simply not like the current social and government structure merely on principle.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: So far, he seems to be a fair and just king.

[[folder: Enemies]]

!!Roman Torchwick
Class: Thief

The leader of the TRE guild. Officially registered under "Torchwick Real Estate", it's better known as "Torchwick Rogue Empire" as a hint to it's true nature.

----

* TheBait: [[spoiler:Intentionally fails to assassinate Corvo and allows himself to be captured by the Mistral Army just to focus the Hunters' attention. YMMV on how much sense this makes when the Guild was already bound for the Mistral army, and the Greycloak's plan called for said army to be over-run by a horde of Grimm.]]
* CharmPerson: [[spoiler:A benefit of his Passive, Silver Tongued Rogue, which lets him use his Dexterity score in place of Charisma.]]
* FauxAffablyEvil: Is quite polite and friendly in his interactions, but is constantly trying to scam students into poverty and force them out of Beacon. [[spoiler:Later revealed to be a necessary tactic for his [[CharmPerson Silver Tongued Rogue]] passive skill, so that people will follow his suggestions more easily.]]
* KarmaHoudiniWarranty: [[spoiler:After spending years tricking defenseless students into trouble he finally gets a measure of comeuppance in Book 3 when he's forced to flee Beacon, but still escapes imprisonment.]]
* KnifeNut: Wields a dagger along with his cane.
* LoanShark: His specialty, with the help of Neo.
* ManipulativeBastard: He has a particular fondness of targeting naive first years. Needless to say, it has made him many enemies over the years.
* TheMole: [[spoiler:Is revealed to be employed by the Greycloaks while being a student within Beacon.]]
* NiceJobFixingItVillain: His scamming the Hunters Guild, and subsequently trying to get them kicked out of Beacon, is what pushes them to take quests that frequently pits them against the Greycloaks.
* SonOfAWhore: Casually mentions that his mother was a prostitute in response to Coco calling him a bastard.
* TreacherousQuestGiver: Averted. Tried to offer a quest as a means for Jaune and the others to pay off their debt, but Jaune later throws the scroll away without even reading it, knowing it would likely give Torchwick even more leverage over them.

!!Neo
Class: Dancer [[spoiler:Actual Class: Illusionist]]

Torchwick's assistant, and the Seneschal of the TRE guild. She and Torchwick share a friendly and amicable relationship.

----

* BitchInSheepsClothing: [[spoiler:Likes to pretend to be a member of the Labour Caste to make people underestimate her.]]
* {{Foil}}: To Jaune. [[spoiler:While Jaune changes his Labourer class name to a Hero's with an illusion in order to escape the prejudice against the Labour Caste and pursue a heroic life, she uses an illusion to change her Hero class name to a Labourer's in order to pursue a criminal career and make people underestimate her until it's too late.]]
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: [[spoiler:She could have easily killed Jaune in his sleep, but made a spur of the moment decision to choke him to death in a needlessly cruel fashion rather than simply slit his throat, giving him an opportunity to stop her.]] This does not count as IdiotBall as it was ''entirely'' in character for her to do so.
* KarmaHoudiniWarranty: [[spoiler:After spending years tricking defenseless students into trouble she finally gets a measure of comeuppance in Book 3 when her true class is revealed and she's forced to flee Beacon, but still manages to avoid imprisonment.]]
* KissOfDeath: [[spoiler:Shows up in the Magnis quest disguised as Blake [[SlainInTheirSleep in an attempt to murder Jaune in his sleep,]] but as he wakes up on her arrival she quickly proceeds to seduce and make-out with him before trying to strangle him.]]
* MasterOfIllusion: [[spoiler:She's mostly seen using her abilities to aide Torchwick in his crimes by changing her Class, disguising Roman into other people, and creating a distraction in order to flee punishment.]]
* WalkingSpoiler:As one can see by the rest of her entries, the details about her are a significant reveal.

!!Merlot
Class: Sorcerer

A Sorcerer and the first Greycloak Jaune and the others face. He is dedicated to achieving godhood through the use of a dark ritual.

----

* AssholeVictim: Is so unapologetically evil, selfish, and egotistical, you can't help but be glad [[spoiler:that Salem screws him over by transforming him into a Grimm, and he gets killed off.]]
* BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor: Wished for the power of the Grimm, [[spoiler:and got turned into a giant tentacled monster as a result.]]
* DidNotThinkThisThrough: Asked for the power of the Grimm, [[spoiler:so Salem turned him into a giant monstrous Grimm, while pointing out that a Grimm's power is primarily all physical.]]
* KillItWithFire: [[spoiler:One of the consequences of absorbing all the Grimm on a frigid mountain was gaining their weakness to fire.]]
* EvilIsNotAToy: Claims to have spent decades researching the ritual [[spoiler:to summon Salem,]] but gave very little thought on what could happen once he did.
* ItsAllAboutMe: Is determined to become a god [[spoiler:no matter who he has to kill, be they Labour caste, or even his own Sentinel.]]
* SummoningRitual: Is implied to be the one who pieced together the method to summon Salem and provided it to the Greycloaks.
* TeamKiller: [[spoiler:Killing his Sentinel is what provided the final amount of negativity to summon Salem.]]
* TheyCalledMeMad: Was exiled from Atlas for his questionable research into the Grimm.

!!Glenn Vuori
Class: Lancer

The Sentinel of Merlot, who aides him in his quest for godhood.

----

* AssholeVictim: It's hard to be sympathetic [[spoiler:when Merlot betrays and murders her]] given her willing complicity in the death of so many innocent Labour Caste, and her [[SmugSuper condescending attitude.]]
* BladeOnAStick: Fights with a spear.
* FlashStep: Her Passive skill allows her to instanly move toward where any spear she possess is at.
* DidNotSeeThatComing: [[spoiler:Was completely surprised by Merlot murdering her as the final sacrifice to summon Salem.]]
* LoveMakesYouEvil: Is in love with Merlot and fully supports him [[spoiler:in sacrificing the Labour Caste on the Fang to summon Salem.]]
* MeaningfulName: "Vuori" is Finnish for "mountain." So her name translates to "Mt Glenn".
* MoreDakka: Has a skill that allows her to create a plethora of ethereal spears to throw at enemies.
* ShoutOut: To the Mt Glenn incident not only in canon, but to the Grimm Eclipse game as well.

!!Arthur Watts
Class: Paladin

An ex-Hero and renegade of Atlas. He and Weiss share a history.

----

* AbsurdCuttingPower: His favored runic sword has the ability to cut through people and armor with little effort. [[spoiler:It loses the ability when Jaune uses his Blacksmithing skill to smudge one of the runes powering it, turning it into a mundane blade.]]
* BlindedByTheLight: [[spoiler:Jaune uses [[LightEmUp Salem]] to temporarily blind Watts before he can both kill Blake and stop her from assassinating Willow.]]
* BodyguardCrush: Was the Sentinel to Weiss' mother, [[spoiler:and became jealous and murderous when she fell in love with Weiss' father Jacques instead.]]
* CombatMedic: Is one of the few individuals with a healing Class who chose to attend a Hero academy rather than a specialized healer school.
* EyeScream: Loses an eye [[spoiler:courtesy of Blake with his own dagger.]]
* HealingHands: Has access to healing spells as a Paladin.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard:
** [[{{Pride}} He can't help but]] [[EvilGloating gloat to the heroes]] concerning the supremacy of his [[GeometricMagic rune-enchanted]] equipment and how none of their weapons would be able to harm him. [[spoiler:So Jaune [[PlayingWithFire melts]] one of the runes from Watts' sword, stripping it of its abilities, while also distracting Watts enough for Blake to stab him [[EyeScream in the eye]] with his own enchanted dagger that he had previously fatally wounded her with before she was [[HealingHands healed by Watts' own spell]] [[NiceJobFixingItVillain that had missed its intended target thanks to Jaune.]]]]
** [[spoiler:Happens again, after he makes his wish to Salem. Because he wished for the resurrected Willow to never let themselves be separated, she takes advantage by killing him when she is dealt a mortal blow, so that they could be together in death.]]
* LightIsNotGood: As a Paladin he has light based magic, but is definitely not a good guy.
* TheLostLenore: His main motive in aiding the Grey Cloaks is [[spoiler:to gain access to a wish and ressurect Willow, [[MadLove his former Mage]].]]
* MagicKnight: Is this due to being a Paladin. Though is nominally not quite as good in either melee or magic as dedicated classes, his high level and equipment makes up for any deficiency.
* TheMedic: As a high level Paladin, he can cast effective healing spells numerous times with ease.
* MurderTheHypotenuse: His plan [[spoiler:to murder Weiss' father Jacques in order to have her mother Willow. It may have worked if he didn't continue to try and murder Weiss and Winter after they survived the first assassination.]]
* NeverMyFault: He blames Jacques for Willow not loving him, the death of Whitley, and even Willow's murder.
* SmugSnake: He's an incredibly high level, has access to healing magic, has powerful magical equipment, and is well aware of how formidable that makes him. If he was more focused on fighting than [[EvilGloating belittling his opponents]], the Hunters probably wouldn't have stood a chance against him.
* TalkingIsAFreeAction: Loves to gloat and insult his weaker opponents in the midst of battle, [[spoiler:and even stops to condescend Ms. Goodwitch during their fight.]]
* TogetherInDeath: [[spoiler:[[HoistByHisOwnPetard The ultimate consequence]] of his wish to ressurrect [[TheLostLenore Willow]]. As a part of his wish he demanded that they never be separated. [[LiteralGenie Willow was happy to oblige him after she had been mortally wounded]].]]

!!Tyrian Callows
Class: Paragon

A famed and accomplished Hero of Mistral who fell from grace due to a past failure. He is determined to bring about a more peaceful and inclusive Mistral, but by dark and twisted means.

----

* TheAce: A Paragon is a Prestige Class whose focus is having A ranked stats in all categories (save Resilience), and is thus regarded as the perfect Hero class.
* AdaptationalHeroism: Canon Tyrian is little more than a sociopathic thug. [[spoiler:In this story he's a Hero driven to madness due to being branded a [[{{Unperson}} Forsaken]] for a failure that wasn't his fault, and still retains a noble, if warped, goal.]]
* AxeCrazy: He wants to make Mistral more inclusive and peaceful, [[spoiler:so he summons Salem in order to serve as it's new Queen, and finds the prospect of people being turned into Grimm a fantastic idea.]]
* CharmPerson: As a high-leveled Paragon, Tyrian has an incredibly large Charisma score. This is somewhat implied to be the reason [[spoiler:the villagers went with him of their own volition and why they were so willing to sacrifice themselves to further his goals.]]
* FallenHero: A particularly poignant example. [[spoiler:Tyrian, a noble and accomplished Hero who failed to save the Mistral Queen due to her own cowardice, was made a scapegoat and Forsaken by the Mistral hierarchy to save their reputation, and ends up dying in an (unneeded) attempt to save his new Queen Salem, whom he summoned in a mad attempt to create a more peaceful and inclusive Mistral. [[KickTheDog And then Salem dismisses him as a failure, leaving Tyrian a broken and sobbing mess as he succumbs to his wounds]].]]
* GoMadFromTheIsolation: It's implied that Tyrian being branded a Forsaken was the primary force driving him to madness.
* IdealHero: Dedicated himself to being one and was held as one of the greatest Heroes of Mistral, not only due to his class, but also by accepting every request made to him, while never asking for anything in return. [[spoiler:It later ended up destroying him when his failure to protect the Queen of Mistral due to her own cowardice, caused the King to brand him as [[{{Unperson}} Forsaken]] so no one would know the truth, and was shunned by everyone for it.]]
* PetTheDog: Is angered by Ruby being injured by one of his followers, and immediately fusses over her.
* TheScapegoat: Was made into one by the Mistralian monarchy in order to [[spoiler:keep the truth of the queen's cowardice and idiocy hidden from the rest of the world.]]
* SimpleYetAwesome: The class equivalent, as he shows no special skills in his fight against the guild, but by being a Paragon all of his stats (save Resilience) are ranked A, so he doesn't require any.
* {{Unperson}}: Was branded as a Forsaken [[spoiler:due to the Queen fleeing like a coward and getting herself killed, and the King using Tyrian as a scapegoat to maintain the Royal's reputation.]]
* UtopiaJustifiesTheMeans: Is convinced that his intentions are pure and ultimately for the greater good of Mistral.

!!Vernal
Class: Rogue

A member of Raven's tribe and a Greycloak.

----

* AdaptationalVillainy: Is far more openly sadistic and malevolent than canon.
* BreakThemByTalking: Does this [[spoiler:to Lisa after a group of Greycloaks slaughter many New Dawn members and then blames it on her as their leader that rallied them in the first place, and then starts in on her status as the illegitimate princess of Vale for good measure. The resulting negativity is enough to summon Salem.]]
* TheBrute: She's introduced easily manhandling metal cages with people in them, suggesting she's a high enough Level to have great Str despite her Rogue Class.
* TheDragon: Appears to be Raven's right hand.
* HateSink: Is as despicable and vile as Raven, whom she devotedly follows, with Jaune and [[spoiler:Lisa]] even hating her more.
* {{Hypocrite}}: Degrades and insults Jaune at nearly every turn by calling him a dog when he's forced to obey, and a weakling who only gains Levels be killing lower Level opponents. This, while she is almost slavishly devoted to Raven, and torments Jaune and Lisa due to their lower Levels.
* KnifeNut: Wields a pair of wicked curved knives.
* SmugSnake: She enjoys mocking and tormenting Jaune due to his lower Level.
* TheSociopath: While this seems to be a requirement in Raven's tribe, Vernal stands out from the rest as she thinks nothing of cutting up a prisoner just to establish dominance and uses threats of death and torture to maintain control.

!!Raven Branwen
Class: Knight

Yang's mother, and [[spoiler:the leader of the Greycloaks]].

----

* AdaptationalIntelligence: Canon Raven's idea of a plan was to keep herself safe in a way that put her in more danger. This Raven's plans always go her way, has everyone acting as she predicts, and knows everything personal about specific people she uses, [[spoiler:like the extent of Jaune's Blacksmithing Skills, and Lisa's true lineage,]] so that everything works towards her goals.
* AdaptationalVillainy: While canon Raven is far from being a saint, in this story she's little more than a remorseless CardCarryingVillain who cares about nothing but gaining more Levels and power.
* BigBad: As the [[spoiler:leader of the entire Greycloak organization]], she's likely this for the whole story.
* CainAndAbel: The Cain to Qrow's Abel.
* ContrivedCoincidence: Her plan needed Salem conveniently granting a wish for a powerful weapon in such a way as to leave her with [[spoiler:an unearthly and uniquely strong metal for Jaune to eventually forge into an InfinityPlusOneSword.]]
* {{Foreshadowing}}: Her inclusion in the story and ties with [[spoiler:the Greycloaks]] is foreshadowed near the end off Book 4 when Qrow gives his full name to a group [[spoiler:of Greycloaks,]] and they visibly react with uncertainty. Occurs again midway through Book 6 when one of her portals is seen closing after having delivered [[spoiler:sacrifices to Watts in the Vacuoan temple]].
* HateSink: By the first chapter of properly introducing her, Raven's proven to be a woman arguably more despicable and evil than even the canon villains of RWBY.
* HeroKiller: Has naturally killed many heroes in her quest for Exp. But the pronounced example is [[spoiler:when she kills her own brother, Qrow.]]
* InfinityPlusOneSword: [[spoiler:Raven has [[UltimateBlackmith Jaune]] forge her one of these from a [[ThunderboltIron fallen meteor]] and engrave upon it a rune that reads "seal/contain".]]
* InvincibleVillain: Is so high Level that no one can oppose her [[spoiler: and even wields what is likely one of the most powerful weapons in existence after Jaune forges her an InfinityPlusOneSword. Jaune even rationalizes forging such a thing as not really making Raven any deadlier since, irregardless of her armaments, she can already defeat almost any foe with little effort.]]
* ItsAllAboutMe: Everything she does is out of selfishness. She engages in mass slaughter simply to gain Levels. [[spoiler:Sets up a system of gladiatorial fights to increase the Levels of her victims, just to gain Exp when she kills the winner.]] And finally the entire plot of the story is for the purpose of her making a wish to Salem safely.
* TheJuggernaut: Discussed in-universe. Raven points out that most heroes don't go farther than Level 70, with exceptions making it to Level 80 and there are legends about heroes who allegedly made it to the nineties. When Jaune asks Raven what her level is, her answer [[spoiler:of Level 112]] comes as quite a shock.
* PragmaticVillainy: [[spoiler:Raven easily agrees to allow Jaune and Lisa to go free after Jaune forges her a sword because keeping them imprisoned is simply an additional tax on the tribe's resources (YMMV on how much sense this makes when she deliberately has Jaune kill enough Greycloaks to free more resources than two prisoners), killing Jaune would just deprive her of the world's greatest Blacksmith, killing Lisa would not get any of her followers appreciably closer to a higher Level, and she can simply [[ThinkingUpPortals open a portal directly to Jaune]] if she should ever require use of him in the future.]]
* SmugSuper: Mocks the Hunters while tanking all their attacks without receiving a scratch, and states she doesn't care whether Vale or Ozpin is informed about her, as no one can stop her. [[spoiler:Being Level 112, she's likely right.]]
* TheSociopath: Far more so than canon. She cares little for the thousands that have died due to her organisation's machinations, or the previous villains the Hunters have dealt with. She [[spoiler:is of a level so high that ''no living hero'' can best her in a fight]], and became that way by [[spoiler:holding gladiatorial contests between her victims, then siccing one of her warriors onto the winner of that, then building on that until she gets someone high-level enough for her to slaughter and gain more experience from]]. People are essentially nothing more than a means for Exp for her. And just like in canon, she cares naught for Yang as a mother.
* ThinkingUpPortals: Just like in canon, she has this ability. Though how or why she can do this as a Knight when it's stated to be performed only by magical Classes is yet to be explained.
* ThunderboltIron: Possesses a rare and valuable meteoric ingot that was supposedly taken from a distant star [[spoiler:by Salem to fulfill the wish of a man who asked for a powerful weapon before dropping it on him from orbit. Raven has Jaune forge it into an InfinityPlusOneSword.]]
* VillainsNeverLie: Yang says that Raven considers it a mark of her strength that she need never lie to anyone.
* XanatosGambit: Her current plans for the future are so multi-layered that she sees a potential positive outcome for herself at every turn. [[spoiler: She allows Jaune to go back to Ozpin and inform him of her location. If Ozpin sends an army after her, the Greycloaks will fight them to the death, whittling the army down enough so that once Raven joins the fray, she has an easier time fighting them, earning more Exp for herself in preparation for killing Salem. If the Heroes decide not to act against her, that's fine; she'll just summon Salem herself. Beyond that, if Raven's plan to kill Salem falls through, that's fine as well; Raven would be dead and free from the consequences of unleashing the dark god on the world.]]

!!The Greycloaks

A mysterious organization spreading chaos throughout Remnant.

----

* DealWithTheDevil: They seem intent on making various deals with Salem.
* DidntSeeThatComing: [[OutsideContextProblem The Hunters]] regularly disrupt their plans in ways they couldn't anticipate. Examples include: interrupting their summoning rituals, initiating a guild war against their operatives, being personally acquainted with Salem, and [[spoiler:putting a stop to their rebellions by having the political backing of the future God-Queen of Mistral.]]
* FalseFlagOperation: [[spoiler:Engineered a series of naval incidents to instigate a war between Vale and Mistral.]]
* ForTheEvulz: Their main agenda, as wide spread misery makes it easier to summon Salem.
* HiddenAgendaVillain: Little is known about them, not even their proper name, just that they seem dedicated to spreading misery and chaos across Remnant.
* LegionOfDoom: [[spoiler:So far all of the main human antagonists have been related to them in one way or another.]]
* TeethClenchedTeamwork: Despite using the same methods, each member's ultimate goals have little in common and are sometimes contradictory.

!!Salem

The Queen and ultimate source of the Grimm.

----

* AdaptationalHeroism: Zigzagged. While this Salem is more horrifying, treacherous, and cruel than her canon self on a personal level, she's presented as simply following her [[EldritchAbomination inherent nature]] instead of willfully pursuing humanity's destruction, and is no longer the driving force of overall conflict in the story, having nothing to do with the Greycloaks except as a means to grant their wishes.
* AntagonistAbilities: Has several. Her very presence [[GravityMaster presses down everyone until they're on their hands and knees.]] Striking her with a weapon will either [[{{Intangibility}} go right through her,]] or [[BareHandedBladeBlock be caught with ease.]] She can easily [[SuperSenses detect the location of those out of sight or the true nature of those in disguise,]] can [[{{Telekinesis}} hurl and grab people without physical contact,]] and [[VillainTeleportation cross distances in an instant.]] All this, ''in addition to'' being the Queen of Grimm, and thus [[MookMaker able to create any kind of Grimm she wants!]]
* BerserkButton: Anyone actually harming her, [[spoiler:as Jaune found out.]]
* EldritchAbomination: Is this in-universe, having no name or class over her head, and exists outside of the [[RPGMechanicsVerse RPG System]] the rest of the world runs under.
* EmotionEater: Feeds off of negativity, though she has a particular preference on the kind of negativity produced.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: PlayedWith. She's observed to express distaste [[spoiler:at Merlot murdering his Sentinel.]] Later revealed that her distaste is due to the kind of negativity being produced with the [[EmotionEater "flavor"]] being rooted in love, while she prefers anger.
* FauxAffablyEvil: Is polite and personable, though in a condescending way, and plays along with whoever summons her, but does whatever she can to twist their wishes and screw them over. Oh, and is also the source of the Grimm, and [[EmotionEater feeds off the negativity around her.]]
* GreaterScopeVillain: Is both the ultimate source of the Grimm and the unifying factor behind the Greycloaks.
* JerkassGenie: Salem ''will'' grant her summoner's wish, but will liberally interpret or indirectly undermine her summoner in order to lead them to both emotional and physical destruction.
* KickTheDog: A particularly brutal one [[spoiler:to Tyrian,]] where she plays on his past failure as he lays dying, [[EmotionEater just to emotionally torture him in order to wring out the best kind of negativity]].
* KryptoniteFactor: As a Demonic entity, Salem is weak to [[spoiler:[[WhiteMagic Purified objects]]]]. Luckily for her, no such objects seem to exist [[spoiler:until Jaune makes one out of her amulet]].
* LawfulEvil: Is bound to obey her summoner and grant their wish, [[ExactWords though how she goes about it is completely up to her.]] And in her third appearance it's heavily implied she operates under an even larger set of rules that she can't fully break, but constantly tries to undermine.
* LightEmUp: If Salem is harmed in even the most minuscule of fashions, she releases a blinding flash of light accompanied by a sound like thunder and an outward force. [[spoiler:[[GuileHero Jaune uses this to his advantage by throwing his dagger into Salem's back and subsequently]] [[BlindedByTheLight blinding Watts before he can cut Blake in two.]]]]
* ManipulativeBastard: Almost every interaction between her and another character is for the sole purpose of leading them to both physical and emotional destruction.
* OhCrap: Has a minor one when [[spoiler:she realizes that Jaune's path has been preparing him to combat Salem thanks to [[{{MacGuffin}} her amulet.]]]]
* PersonOfMassDestruction: Should a wish be made in such a way to allow her to really cut loose, Salem is fully capable of [[spoiler:destroying an entire Kingdom and converting a good portion of the continent it was on into a vast desert.]]
* PhysicalGod: Salem is recognized as a goddess by many ([[SubvertedTrope Though she doesn't]] [[GodsNeedPrayerBadly need prayer badly]]), she [[TimeAbyss calls herself the origin, eternal, and ever-present from a time before the dominion of humanity]], [[NighInvulnerable is seemingly immune to all forms of physical damage]], [[PersonOfMassDestruction and possesses the power to]] [[spoiler:[[PersonOfMassDestruction completely destroy a once fertile kingdom to the point that, centuries later, all that is left of it is a vast desert.]] And, perhaps most importantly, she can be directly harmed when summoned and forced to manifest.]]
* SummoningRitual: She can be made to manifest on Remnant using one. She does not enjoy the experience.
* TimeAbyss: Salem claims to be the origin of all Grimm and speaks of a time before humanity claimed dominion of Remnant when her children freely roamed the land.

\n!!Ruby Rose\nClass: Reaper\n\n* [[Characters/ForgedDestinyTheHunters The first person Jaune meets at Beacon.

* FragileSpeedster:

* CruelToBeKind:
* [[AssassinsAreAlwaysBetrayed Rogues Are Always Betrayed]]: Her fear of this is one of the main obstacles to her closer relationship with the
Hunters in general and [[spoiler:Jaune]] in particular.

!!
Guild]] [[note]] Ruby Rose, Blake Belladonna, Weiss Schnee

* {{Foil}}:

!!
Schnee, Pyrrha Nikos
Class: Champion

A student from Mistral, and a member of the rare and powerful Prestige Class. She and
Nikos, Yang Xiao Long, Nora Valkyrie, Lie Ren, Velvet Scarlatina[[/note]]
** [[Characters/ForgedDestinyJauneArc
Jaune briefly meet before the First Quest, and become good friends soon after.

----

Arc]]

* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: It's Nora.

!!Headmaster Ozpin
Class: Sage

The Headmaster of Beacon Academy. He is a strong proponent of peace and unity against the Grimm.

----

* AdultsAreUseless:
* IdiotBall:

* ParentalSubstitute: [[spoiler:Took in
Goodwitch, Bartholomew Oobleck, Tsune, Coco Adel, James Ironwood, Winter and Weiss after the deaths of their father, brother, and mother.]]

* OriginalCharacter

!!Viktor Swansteel
Class: Knight

A Knight of Atlas and the Sentinel to
Schnee, Kaedin Sand.

Kaedin describes his more admirable qualities, explains his [[AngerBornOfWorry harsh treatment of Jaune and the rest as concern over his Mage charge]], and [[spoiler:puts himself between them and a Grimm transformed Merlot several times before dying;]] however, [[InformedAttribute we never see any indication of this from
Sand, Viktor himself]], and he also [[spoiler:curses Jaune and the others with his last breathe before dying.]] So it's left somewhat ambiguous if this is just the bias of an old friend or not.
* OriginalCharacter

!!
Swansteel, Penny, Oscar, Qrow Branwen

* DoubleMeaning: Her last words to Jaune before the defense of [[spoiler:Stoneskeep]] take on an entirely new meaning once
Branwen, Cinder reveals [[spoiler:that she knew right from the start that Jaune wasn't a Knight.]]

!!
Fall, Ellayne [[spoiler:Rainart]]

* TearsOfJoy:
** Is so relieved to be saved by Jaune during her First Quest that she starts crying.
** Does so again once she sees Jaune alive and well after the Defense of Magnis.
* TheUnfavourite: Her parents always favored her brother over her, both for his Class and for his high position in the royal court.

!!
[[spoiler:Rainart]], Isaac Corvo

* OriginalCharacter
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: He tries to comfort Jaune several times and is shown to care about his soldier's well being. While he is willing to do his duty to his country, he is conflicted about sending his men into a battle he knows will result in significant loss of life.

!!
Corvo, Sun Wukong

!!Galan
Wukong, Faith, Galan ap' Falar III

The High King of Vale.

----

III[[/note]]

[[/folder]]

The Sentinel of
[[Characters/ForgedDestinyEnemies Enemies]] [[note]]Roman Torchwick, Neo, Merlot, who aides him in his quest for godhood.

* ShoutOut: To the Mt
Glenn incident not only in canon, but to the Grimm Eclipse game as well.

* HoistByHisOwnPetard:

* AdaptationalHeroism: Canon
Vuori, Arthur Watts, Tyrian is little more than a sociopathic thug.

* AdaptationalVillainy: While canon
Callows, Vernal, Raven is far from being a saint, in this story she's little more than a remorseless CardCarryingVillain who cares about nothing but gaining more Levels and power.
* BigBad: As the [[spoiler:leader of the entire Greycloak organization]], she's likely this for the whole story.
* CainAndAbel:
Branwen, The Cain to Qrow's Abel.

Due to the length of the story and the amount of focus Jaune receives receives, entries can be found[[Characters/ForgedDestinyJaune found [[Characters/ForgedDestinyJaune here.]]

* TenMinuteRetirement: Jaune undergoes one when he is forced to [[spoiler:resign from Beacon after TheReveal.]] During this time, he returns home to Ansel, reunites with his family, and makes plans for what he wants to do with his life before [[spoiler:a contingent from Mistral arrives and informs him that they plan to burn down his village and that there is an army on its way to attack Vale.]]
* AbsurdCuttingPower: What [[ReforgedBlade Crocea Mors]] gains thanks to Jaune's [[spoiler:Swordmaster Passive and ]]Skills.
* AchievementInIgnorance: As he was raised a member of the Labour Caste, Jaune is largely ignorant of the large amount of inter-class bias that is present amongst the Hero Caste. This allows him to befriend Pyrrha, who has an exceedingly rare and powerful class and is used to people seeing her for it instead of who she is, and Blake, a member of a rogue class which most "noble" heroes tend to shun, by simply treating them the same way he does everyone else.
* AffectionateGestureToTheHead: Jaune is prone to doling these out to [[TheCutie Ellayne.]]
* AffectionateNickname: "Strange Knight" by Blake since he always thinks the best of her and strives to do what is right, regardless of whether it will be rewarded or not. The "Strange" is due to how different he is when compared to Remnant's [[HolierThanThou traditional]] [[GoodIsNotNice Knights.]]
* ArmorPiercingAttack: One of Jaune's [[spoiler:Swordmaster]] Skills, Piercing Thrust, easily penetrates through magical shields and defenses. Another, Dividing Slash, cuts through both armor and weapons with ease but deals no extra damage to their wielder.
* ArmorPiercingResponse: When [[spoiler:Cinder]] demands to know why Jaune returned, his response leaves her reeling.
-->'''Jaune:''' Why? [[spoiler:You sent an army to burn Ansel to the ground. You tried to slaughter my village and kill my family!]]
* ArtifactOfPower: [[spoiler:Jaune has reached such a high Level that he can effectively make these, either through the inscription of his own Runes, transferring existing Runes onto other objects, or by Purifying objects to make them ProtectiveCharms.]]
* AudienceSurrogate: Jaune serves as this much like in canon, since his background as both a member of the Labour Caste, and being from a relatively isolated village, is used to justify his ignorance in many areas of the world, and thus would ask the same questions as anyone reading about an RPGMechanicsverse.
* BadassBoast: Jaune gives a pretty effective one that crosses over with PreMortemOneLiner to [[spoiler:the soldiers that try to attack Ansel.]]
* BareHandedBladeBlock:
** Jaune stops a swung sword with a single hand [[spoiler: before then rapidly heating and cooling said sword to create an improvised grenade during the defense of Ansel.]] Justified as Jaune is at a much higher Level than the sword's user and his hand is still lightly cut.
** Jaune does so again against [[spoiler:the King of Mistral]] before effortlessly breaking his wrist and slapping him aside.
* BarrierChangeBoss: [[spoiler:Jaune can instantly shift his Class between Blacksmith and Sword Master depending on which benefits him more in that moment.]]
* BecomingTheBoast: While not a boast of the verbal variety, Jaune's amulet changing the words above his head to "Knight" indirectly informs everyone around him that he should have a fairly high Charisma score and be innately suited to a position of leadership. As Jaune is not only not a Knight but has also never partaken in any battles whatsoever before attending Beacon, this is most definitely not the case. He even confesses his lack of experience to the rest of the guild during their dungeon quest and to Cinder during the defense of [[spoiler:Stoneskeep]], but in both cases he still manages to rise to the occasion and lead his forces to victory.
* BerserkButton: While he despises prejudice and discrimination based on people's Classes in general, the moment anyone insults or mistreats Blake over hers, it's all she or any of his friends can do to keep him from doing something rash.
* BeyondTheImpossible: [[spoiler:One's Class is something that they are given at birth and, although one can develop under it in different ways, it can never be changed. Until...]]
-->[[spoiler:'''JAUNE''']]\\
[[spoiler:'''SWORDMASTER''']]
* BigBrotherMentor: Takes this role to Ellayne.
* TheBlacksmith: His actual class.
* BladeSpam: Four Flowering Petals, one of Jaune's [[spoiler:Swordmaster]] Skills, is composed of four blows in quick succession from four different angles.
* BloodKnight: Downplayed. Jaune doesn't seek out conflict but he does find satisfaction in besting skilled opponents, has a tendency to break into fits of MirthlessLaughter after, or even during, such battles, and his first kill filled him with a sense of [[spoiler:elation (and guilt at said elation)]]. Conversely, Jaune finds no pleasure in having to mow down waves of weaker enemies as he was forced to do in the defense of [[spoiler:Ansel.]]
* TheChainsOfCommanding: He spends quite a bit of time angsting about being thrust into the position of guild leader for the Hunters until it's gently pointed out to him that the position is mostly a bureaucratic title and no one really expects him to take personal responsibility for every decision that has to be made.
* CharacterNarrator: The story is told entirely from his perspective.
* CharmPerson: [[SubvertedTrope Subverted.]] A Knight's characteristic attribute, Charisma, allows them to more easily manipulate others, but Jaune's is abysmally low as a Blacksmith. He is able to mimic a high value by both [[TheHeart his understanding of people's motivations]] allowing him to convince them that helping him benefits their goals, and [[TheLeader always maintaining a level head and projecting an image of calm to those around him,]] [[IndyPloy often with a plan for them to rally behind.]]
* ChekhovsGun: The Rune of Cold Steel that Jaune extracted from the armor he gained from [[spoiler:Beacon's vault]]. Initially, it only provides a large boost to Jaune's Constitution and defense when welded onto his breastplate, but he eventually [[spoiler:welds the rune onto a pauldron he forges for [[FragileSpeedster Ruby]], effectively increasing her Constitution by a factor of six.]]
* ChildOfTwoWorlds: Jaune uses this to explain his ignorance of things the others take for granted, claiming to be a Hero born to Labour Caste parents. Apparently this is rare but not unheard of, and he usually gets pitying looks when he tells someone.
* CluelessChickMagnet: Over the course of the story, Jaune has earned the affections of ''at least'' three of his guildmates,[[labelnote:*]][[BetterAsFriends Pyrrha]], [[IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy Ruby]], and [[AloofDarkHairedGirl Blake]][[/labelnote]] and the complete adoration of his apprentice, Ellayne, without even realizing he had done so. Once he returns to Ansel, his sisters note that he is attracting quite a lot of [[FemaleGaze female attention]] and that he's about to pop out of his tunic. Jaune notes that he did notice...[[ComicallyMissingThePoint that his tunic is too small.]]
* TheConfidant: Even more so than in canon. Ruby reveals a critical weakness about her class relying entirely on using a scythe after only briefly knowing him, Yang tells him about their family issues caused by Summer's obsession and death, Pyrrha admits her loneliness and despair due to her special class, Oscar easily shares his desire for adventure and heroism, and Blake gradually opens up more and more of herself [[spoiler:as they continue dating.]]
* CoverBlowingSuperpower: Jaune's always careful when using his active Skills in combat situations as they would give away his identity as a Blacksmith. He gets around this by either disguising his abilities as those of a Knight (Flaming Sword) or by killing his opponents right after using them. [[spoiler:The one time he fails to do so is against Cinder which clues her in that Jaune is [[SpottingTheThread not what he seems]].]]
* CradlingYourKill: Jaune gently holds [[spoiler:Cinder]] while she is dying and apologizes for everything that has happened between them.
* CrazyJealousGuy: Averted. Though Jaune isn't happy with Sun making passes at Blake, he makes a conscious effort to not overreact.
* CurbStompBattle: [[spoiler:Forty invading Mistralian soldiers vs a small town of NPC's led by a single Blacksmith.]] The invaders never knew what hit them.
* DarkSecret: Jaune's identity as a Blacksmith. It's speculated in Book 6 that not only would every Caste despise him for his attempt to change his Class, but that the punishment for his actions would be either execution or indefinite imprisonment in order to both make an example and to preserve the Caste System.
* DashAttack: [[spoiler:Piercing Thrust allows Jaune to move forward at incredible speed to attack his opponent, irregardless of his Dexterity stat.]]
* DealWithTheDevil: [[spoiler:Jaune, according to Salem, unintentionally made one with Salem prior to the story's start to gain his class changing amulet.]]
* {{Determinator}}: Jaune's defining attribute, possibly because of his Resilience. No matter the state (severe pain, injury, fatigue, fear) or the situation (underleveled, outnumbered, outclassed, being in the very presence of Salem herself), Jaune ''will'' continue on for as long as he must to attain victory and save his friends.
* DidWeJustHaveTeaWithCthulhu: The only member of The Hunters guild that [[EldritchAbomination Salem]] readily converses with in an almost friendly manner, especially after she finds out he is [[{{MacGuffin}} the new wielder of the amulet.]] [[DidYouJustRomanceCthulhu She even jokingly asks if he has grown enticed by her visage.]]
* DifficultButAwesome: For a Blacksmith, attaining the [[GeometricMagic Runesmithing]] skill not only requires achieving a level most won't reach, but also regularly partaking in combat in order for their Path to provide the skill at all. Even so, becoming one of, if not the only, people with the ability to make magical armaments at will is well worth it.
* DispelMagic: One of Jaune's [[spoiler:Swordmaster]] Skills, Disdainful Strike, disenchants magical arms.
* DoesNotKnowHisOwnStrength: [[spoiler: Jaune accidentally fatally wounded a member of the Soldier Caste with what was meant to be a deterring swing while he was trying to defend the prisoners said soldiers were attempting to unlawfully execute.]] [[AsLethalAsItNeedsToBe This is despite the fact that the Hunters have faced multiple enemies over the course of the story dozens of levels higher than themselves without such a severe disparity in strength and constitution ever being apparent.]]
* DontCallMeSir: After [[spoiler:saving Ansel from Mistral Soldiers and inspiring the citizens to fight back]], several begin referring to him as a lord, despite [[InsistentTerminology his insistence otherwise]].
-->"My lord," Anders greeted as I approached.
-->"I'm not a lord, Anders," I said, sighing, "And I still remember you giving me a stern talking to when I tried practising with one of your swords as a child."
-->"And I remember you saving my life not three weeks earlier," Anders countered.
* DoomedHomeTown: [[spoiler:{{Inverted}}. Ansel takes some casualties, but is actually left as the only town in the region to not be razed to the ground]].
* EasilyImpressed: At the early stages of the story, [[NaiveNewcomer Jaune]] is frequently amazed by things that other Heroes find commonplace. This lessens over time as he becomes more familiar with Heroes and the society they compose.
* TheFace: Among the Hunters, Jaune shares this role with Weiss. Jaune, having been raised in a family of Shopkeepers, is in charge of, and incredibly proficient at, negotiations. Over the course of the story, he advances from arranging better weapon and lodging prices for the rest of the Guild to [[spoiler:brokering a temporary alliance between warring armies and defusing a potential coup that would have hindered said alliance all in a matter of minutes.]]
* FaceDeathWithDignity: After he is critically injured by [[spoiler:Tyrian]], Jaune reassures those around him that he has made peace with his life, and that he will be content just to be remembered by others having saved the lives of his friends. [[spoiler: [[AvertedTrope Averted]] as Salem is forced to heal Jaune to repay him for getting her out of Tyrian's wish, which could have potentially bound her for decades.]]
* FamedInStory: [[spoiler:By Book 7, Jaune has become so famous due to both saving the king's life and gaining a second Class that the Royal court is concerned that he could begin a full-scale revolution were he to rebel against the crown.]]
* {{Foil}}: Several.
** To Ruby. Both are individuals whose primary inspiration to become a Hero came from the idealized versions of them in stories but they follow different paths to pursue their ideals. But while Ruby [[ChronicHeroSyndrome puts the safety of others far above herself,]] and seems to pay no mind to the danger she finds herself in, even though [[FragileSpeedster her Constitution is so low that any error may mean her death,]] Jaune is constantly aware of his own mortality, which [[HadToBeSharp forces him to quickly adapt to situations]] [[MightyGlacier with any missteps on his part not becoming fatal mostly thanks to his high Constitution.]]
** To Pyrrha. Both left their homes to find a place they could start anew without any of the prejudices or expectations they were previously subject to. While Pyrrha is a high-level member of a Prestige class, Jaune is a low-level member of the Labour Caste. While Pyrrha is an incredibly skilled fighter [[TheChampion who is most effective when fighting alone,]] Jaune initially has no combat skills to speak of, [[TheLeader but excels when working closely with others.]] And while Pyrrha is satisfied [[BetterAsFriends to just be friends with the object of her affections,]] [[DoggedNiceGuy Jaune slowly and continually makes his feelings known to his crush]].
** To Blake. Both are people with troubled secrets that strive to overcome the prejudices of their inherent Classes but go about it in different ways. Blake is a relatively high leveled Hero with experience in multiple societies, but Jaune is a low level Blacksmith who is new to the larger world. Blake is openly an Assassin, known for their underhanded and backstabbing methods; Jaune tries to be a Knight, known for their honor and directness, but achieves this through deceit. Blake was an only child [[DarkAndTroubledPast whose parents died when she was young]] while Jaune grew up with a large and loving family. Blake is reserved and anti-social, while Jaune is socially awkward, yet outgoing. [[spoiler: This all ultimately culminates into them becoming a couple in the story.]]
* TheGlovesComeOff: Jaune fully cuts loose for the first time against [[spoiler:the Mistral soldiers sent to raze his town.]]
* GlowingEyes: While these occur anytime someone is using a skill, Jaune's are especially noteworthy as his also shine [[HeroicSafeMode when he becomes extremely calm and focused]] during high-stress situations.
* GoalInLife: He '''will''' be a Hero.
* GotVolunteered: One of the reasons he was made the Guild Leader of the Hunters was because nobody else wanted to do it and he wasn't there to object when the paper work was written up.
* GuileHero: What truly makes Jaune such an effective hero is his ability to come up with alternative ways around whatever problems he faces, be they letting Grimm bite him to stop their movements, [[WhenAllYouHaveIsAHammer using his Blacksmith skills to break an enemy's weapon,]] or forging from unconventional sources of metal to level up faster. In addition, almost every opponent he has ever encountered has been defeated not through brute strength, but by exploitation of their [[FatalFlaw Fatal Flaws.]]
* HeIsAllGrownUp: When Jaune returns to his hometown of Ansel for a two week stay, ''everyone'' notices how much he's grown. While his appearance itself hasn't changed much in the time he's been gone, his improved bearing, attitude, and musculature all contribute to him being nearly unrecognizable to the person they once knew.
* TheHeart: Jaune's roll in the group along with TheHero and TheLeader. He is often the first one to act when there are lives to save and [[WhatTheHellHero the most likely to call the others out for their actions]]. His consideration of others and ability to unite [[RagtagBunchOfMisfits such a diverse group]] is the primary reason The Hunters guild was formed.
* HeartIsAnAwesomePower: Jaune initially thinks of his Passive, immunity from heat generated from his own forging process, as a mostly useless skill with some mundane smithing applications, but it sees a great deal of use throughout the story. It allows him to physically touch and heat weapons in order to [[WreckedWeapon destroy them]], heat his own armor without being cooked alive, [[FlamingSword set his sword alight without being burned]], and, when used in conjunction with his other skills, quickly create high quality equipment without the use of a forge.
* HeelRealization: He undergoes one in Book 5. [[spoiler:He comes to realize exactly how much forcing Blake to keep secrets and lie on his behalf had been an abuse of their relationship and her trust in him. In addition, he comes to believe that many of his actions since coming to Beacon were based solely on rash, selfish, and deeply arrogant reasoning, even if some good ultimately resulted from them; [[UnreliableNarrator though whether this self-appraisal is accurate or a result of his inferiority issues is highly debatable.]]]]
* TheHero: Ironically, as he is the only member of the main cast that isn't of the Hero Class, Jaune seems to most closely align with what others think a Hero should be. He cares nothing for Class prejudices, having been raised a member of the Labour Caste, often inspires hope or determination in others, either through his actions or his words, and always shows a great deal of care for everyone around him.
* HeroicBSOD: Jaune enters a minor one when [[spoiler:Salem reveals to him that she is the creator of [[{{MacGuffin}} the amulet]] and that, by her placing it in his path and him wearing it, they have [[DealWithTheDevil a contract of sorts.]]]] When Blake tries to [[RousingSpeech rouse him from it, saying that he is stronger than Salem,]] Salem reveals [[spoiler:[[DarkAndTroubledPast that Blake is a kinslayer.]] [[TrueCompanions This prompts Jaune to stab Salem in the back.]]]]
* HeroicSafeMode: Mysteriously develops the ability to become detached from his negative emotions during a Grimm siege, [[spoiler:and again when watching a battle between Vale and Mistral's armies.]]
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: Due to not truly being a Hero Class, [[MyGreatestFailure and an early incident nearly killing Ruby,]] he has rather low self-esteem, and constantly worries that he's not good enough to be a Hero. This comes to a head in Book 5 after a series of traumatic events causes him to see almost all of his actions since coming to Beacon as being based solely on rash, selfish, and deeply arrogant reasoning, with only some good ultimately resulting from them.
* HeroicVow: Jaune makes one to [[spoiler:Blake's deceased parents]] after she tells him a little more about them.
-->''I'll look after her,'' I promised the stars above. ''She means the world to me, so... I'll do my best to make her happy.''
* HorrifyingTheHorror: Jaune may be the first person in existence to [[spoiler:scare Salem thanks to his WhiteMagic.]]
-->[[spoiler:[=[Salem]=]]] looked down on me with anger, but also a sudden wariness. Something that might have resembled fear, if it were shown in a being that neither recognised nor understood it.
* AnIcePerson: One of his rune medals that he can weld on to his armor freezes anything that strikes it.
* IndyPloy: Jaune's specialty. His ability to develop strategies in near hopeless situations has saved the entire guild on numerous occasions.
* InformedFlaw:
** Jaune's status as a Labour Class is something we are told is a serious hindrance to being a hero, however Jaune is frequently able to beat Hero Classes of similar or greater Levels in spars and fights, and whenever he isn't able to compete always boils down to a disparity in Levels than in Class. The whole concept is made even more questionable when we learn of the Tier system with the existence of Hero classes that have even worse base stats than some Labourers.
** The author has stated that Jaune is in a constant struggle between being a good person trying to help and a selfish glory hound putting others in danger. However, Jaune is often portrayed as the guild's most cautious member when it comes to taking on dangerous tasks, as seen with both the Dungeon and Atlas, with most of the other hazards they face being pushed on them by outside forces with no other options readily available, and we never once see him actively spreading news of his accomplishments or even caring about his reputation as one would expect someone concerned about glory would.
* InsultBackfire: When Victor learns of Jaune's ideals and supposed origins he dismisses Jaune as a 'peasant knight'. Far from being insulted, Jaune liked the sound of the title.
* KnightInShiningArmor: This trope fits Jaune well despite him not being an actual Knight. As his primary inspiration for becoming a Hero came from the idealized versions of them in his stories, Jaune tries to live up to the ''ideal'' of a Knight rather than [[GoodIsNotNice the reality]].
* TheLeader: Jaune continues to develop as one as the series progresses by both inspiring his comrades and often [[IndyPloy providing]] [[BatmanGambit a plan]] that sees them triumphant. This is seen in Book 5 where he remains [[HeroicSafeMode calm and focused]] by some unknown means [[spoiler:during a battle between Vale and Mistral forces]] while everyone else is emotionally distraught, and thus provides the rest of the guild the strength to move forward. Reinforced in Book 6 when [[spoiler:the rest of Ansel's townsfolk rally behind him to kill the Mistral squadron sent to destroy their home]]; everyone present charges in to help Jaune fight them off.
* MagikarpPower: [[spoiler:Jaune's second Passive, Blade Bond, increases damage dealt in proportion to the length of time the same sword has been wielded. While this means that any new weapon would deal no additional damage at all, after using the same sword for almost a year and a half, à la TheseusShipParadox, Crocea Mors is able to slice through high-tier equipment with ease.]]
* MeaningfulName: [[spoiler:Jaune is a Sword Master which can mean both a master swordsman or [[UltimateBlacksmith a master]] ''[[UltimateBlacksmith of]]'' [[UltimateBlacksmith swords.]]]]
* MetaphoricallyTrue: According to Jaune's [[spoiler:Swordmaster Passive]], every sword that he has forged over the course of the story has been the same blade, Crocea Mors. While each blade has been ''named'' "Crocea Mors", none of them have been composed of the same materials nor have all of them even had pieces of the previous iterations used as components in their construction, making the claim that all of them are the same weapon decidedly false.
* MightyGlacier:
** Jaune's Strength and Constitution stats are his second and third highest parameters respectively. His Dexterity and Agility, however, are his second and third ''lowest''. This means that he often has to immobilize his opponents in some manner so as to effectively hit them.
** Partially averted when Jaune engraves a Rune of Dexterity onto his sword.
** [[spoiler:Fully averted when he gains Sword Master as a Multi-Class.]]
* MirthlessLaughter: Jaune has a bit of a habit of laughing in relief after high stress situations, such as after the conflict with Watts or [[spoiler:the retreat of Salem after the fight with Watts and Willow.]]
* MyGreatestFailure: What Jaune considers his inability to tank the Beowolf that nearly killed Ruby. This became one of his driving motivations to grow stronger so as to prevent anyone from being hurt due to his own weakness.
* NextTierPowerUp: What his ability [[spoiler:to change his Class from Blacksmith to Swordmaster]] amounts to, as it comes with better stats, and more direct combat skills.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: A very literal example when [[spoiler:Jaune uses his Purify Object ability to cleanse his amulet of Salem's power, which apparently dismissed whatever influence she had over him while also getting rid of the amulet's ability to change his class title.]]
* NoSell: When Jaune wears a set of superheated armor, he not only isn't burned alive thanks to [[HeartIsAnAwesomePower his Passive]], but he also [[spoiler:becomes immune to any flame-based attacks as his armor is the hotter substance. All enemy fire does is ''cool him down.'']]
* NotTheIntendedUse:
** Jaune's Blacksmith skills are primarily geared towards engraving decorative designs, cooling metals, or heating a forge. This doesn't stop him from engraving so deeply as to compromise a fortification's structure, rapidly cooling a weapon to weaken it, or grabbing his opponents and burning them alive.
** Swords are primarily seen by others as melee weapons meant to be used to either stab or slash into one's opponents. Jaune [[spoiler:superheats and then rapidly cools them to make improvised ''grenades''.]]
* NotWhatItLooksLike: Invoked by Jaune on the Magnis quest when Blake walks in on him with a drunk [[spoiler:Ruby]] snuggling him while having fallen asleep. Blake quickly assures him of the truth by pointing out several obvious deductions so that even with her trust issues there's no possibility for misunderstanding.
* ObfuscatingInsanity: [[spoiler:Is forced to resort to this when imprisoned by the Greycloaks. Jaune realized that they were attempting to mentally break him by addicting him to the euphoria gained by LevelGrinding, and so played the part of an addict slowly slipping into madness. He does note, however, that the act isn't entirely false as he is suffering from constant pain due to his fever and infected wounds, with Levelling being the only process that brings him any sense of joy.]]
* OutsideContextProblem: Is one for everyone else, as absolutely no one is prepared for a Blacksmith pretending to be a Knight. [[spoiler:Gaining a second class mid-battle will likely prove to be the same, as ''no-one'' has ever been known to do that]].
* OutsideTheBoxTactic: [[spoiler:In the climax of Book 6, Jaune encases himself in molten armor, granting him a jury rigged immunity to fire. This allows him, a lowly level 40 Blacksmith, to go toe to toe with Cinder, a much higher level Prestige class who can only use fire based spells.]]
* TheParagon: What Jaune is slowly developing into as the story goes on. Most prominently seen when his actions rally the rest of [[spoiler:Ansel against the Mistralians that seek to kill them.]]
* PlayingWithFire: One of Jaune's Blacksmithing Skills, Stoke the Forge, allows him to generate an intense amount of heat in his hand for a short time and his Passive prevents him from being burned by his own forging process. A normal blacksmith would use this to light their forge or heat a metal without the use of one. Jaune finds it to be just as effective at burning Grimm, or [[spoiler:welding a spear tip into his armor]].
* PreMortemOneLiner: Jaune gives a ''fantastic'' one to [[spoiler:the Mistral soldiers who seek to destroy his town and break the Grand Treaty.]]
-->"It was a mistake," I said, softly, but with a voice that carried, "To believe that a Blacksmith is ''ever'' without a weapon. It was a mistake to believe that a ''mere NPC'' is no danger. It was a mistake to come here prepared for war. And it was a mistake to try and betray us. But most of all, it was a mistake to [[spoiler:break the Grand Treaty.]]"
-->"Because it was the only thing protecting you."
* ProperlyParanoid: [[spoiler:Jaune never told the rest of his Guild about his true class as he was scared how they would react and that they would treat him differently. When his secret is revealed, the rest of the guild not only reels from him not trusting them with the knowledge of his true class, but they also take the Dungeon drop from him (his only weapon), immediately push him to the center of their formation away from any potential fighting, and show no signs of reluctance in returning to Vale when the punishment there for Jaune's actions would either be incarceration or execution. Jaune was right in that they no longer treat him as a comrade to fight beside but rather as a member of the Needs Protection Caste (NPC).]]
* ProtectiveCharm: [[spoiler:[[{{MacGuffin}} Jaune's amulet]] after he [[WhiteMagic Purifies it of Salem's influence]] [[HolyBurnsEvil and imbues it with the ability to actively harm her and any other Demonic entities.]]]]
* RagsToRiches: The Arc family is by no means poor, but having to support 8 children is still a strain on their resources. So when Jaune, who has become well off by the standards of Beacon, returns home to his rural village, he may well be the single richest person in town. His sisters are quick to take advantage of this.
* ReasoningWithGod: Jaune to Salem in Book 4. He proposes that, as her presence naturally paralyzes those around her, her orders to [[spoiler:Tyrian]] to kill them would be unfulfilled as ''she'' would be the one responsible for their deaths, not her servant, and such an act would not prove said servant's worth. [[spoiler:Salem, however, sees right through it, and dismisses the argument, but then allows Jaune to choose three others to fight alongside Qrow anyway to ostensibly make things more interesting.]]
* ReforgedBlade: Being a Blacksmith, Jaune reforges Crocea Mors each time it is shattered to the exact same specifications as before, either by reusing the old steel or by using entirely new materials. Each new iteration still counts as the same blade [[spoiler:to Jaune's new Passive, Blade Bond, which increases damage dealt in proportion to the length of time he has been wielding his sword.]]
* RelationshipUpgrade: [[spoiler:Jaune and Blake,]] who start as strangers and acquaintances in Book 1, are friends with hints of mutual attraction in Book 2, and officially become a couple by the end of Book 3.
* TheReveal: [[spoiler:Jaune's class is finally revealed to the rest of the Hunters (and Sun) when he [[ProtectiveCharm Purifies his amulet to repel Salem,]] but in doing so purifies it of its Class concealing ability as well.]]
* RequiredSecondaryPowers: Jaune is [[spoiler:initially]] bereft of these in regards to Runesmithing. While the ability to enchant weapons with various abilities based on the single inscription placed upon them ''sounds'' incredibly useful it has two major drawbacks:
** Engraving a rune upon a metallic object requires time as well as a set of specific tools to perform the engraving process, meaning that it can't be performed in the field. This is rectified once Jaune gains the Engraving Skill.
** While Runes are a LanguageOfMagic, they're a seemingly ''long-dead'' LanguageOfMagic, meaning that Jaune has no way to understand what Runes perform what function. This forces Jaune to test each Rune individually and then try to ascertain their abilities from there. [[spoiler:This is rectified once Jaune gains the Skill [[TranslatorMicrobes Runesight]]]].
* SecretArt: Runesmithing. No other known Blacksmith has the Skill and there are no records of it in any of the history or skill books that Jaune searches.
* SecretKeeper: To Ellayne. [[spoiler:Having lied about the fact she failed her First Quest, and thus shouldn't be attending Beacon.]]
* ShroudedInMyth: [[InvokedTrope Invoked]]. Jaune suspects that members of the Noble Caste are deliberately keeping information about him, [[spoiler:the man who brought about the end of the war by slaying Mistral's strongest Hero in one-on-one combat]], secret so as to prevent the [[spoiler:Labour Caste from thinking above their station.]] It doesn't work.
* SorryThatImDying: Jaune apologizes to Blake when he sees how afraid she is after he is lethally impaled by [[spoiler:Tyrian. [[AvertedTrope Averted]] as Salem heals him for his part in getting her out of Tyrian's wish.]]
* SpontaneousWeaponCreation: Downplayed. Jaune's Blacksmithing Skills and high Level allow him to forge things at thousands of times the speed of an actual smith but it still takes about a minute or two to forge a sword from a source of metal.
* SpottingTheThread: Jaune correctly deduces that the pair of Night Guards that check in on him [[spoiler:and Lisa after a failed assassination attempt are either impostors or compromised, stating that they had to have either been directly outside on the street and immediately guessed the correct building and room number where the assault took place while only going off Lisa's scream, or were already aware of the assassination attempt to begin with.]]
* SwordBeam: One of Jaune's [[spoiler:Swordmaster]] Skills, Part the Reeds, allows him to release a buildup of energy from his sword.
* SwordPlant: Jaune stabs his sword into the ground [[spoiler:right next to the head of [[ManipulativeBastard the King of Mistral]] after deciding not to kill him. [[DirtyCoward The coward still faints from fear.]]]]
* TaughtByExperience: Jaune continually develops and modifies his armor and fighting style throughout the story based on past conflicts so as to better combat future opponents. This includes modifying his armor, his armaments, changing how he fights in groups, and employing previously tested strategies against old opponents.
* TheseHandsHaveKilled: Played with. Jaune becomes troubled after killing a Berserker pirate that attacked them on the way to Atlas, and appears to suffer [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone from the guilt of his first human kill,]] [[spoiler:but it turns out he was actually thrilled at his accomplishment, and is instead troubled [[BloodKnight by his lack of guilt.]]]]
* TheirFirstTime: [[spoiler:Jaune and Blake]] have theirs together after attending Beacon's end-of-the-year festival.
* ThunderboltIron: [[spoiler:Forges a fallen meteor into a sword for Raven but conceals a small amount of the material on himself by using it to plate Blake's locket.]]
* TookALevelInBadass: At the start of the story, Jaune needed the help of Blake, Ren, Nora, and Pyrrha to kill a lone Beowolf. By Book 4, he's gained enough Levels, skill, and experience to easily kill another Beowolf single-handedly while also fighting amidst a horde of lesser Grimm.
* TookALevelInCynic: As of the start of Book 7. [[TraumaCongaline After going through what may very well be the worst experience of his life]], Jaune grows suspicious of the people surrounding him as well as defensive and short-tempered with the rest of the Guild even while they're treating him normally. Justified as Jaune is both [[spoiler:under house arrest while surrounded by many Nobles who seek to either use or dispose of him and mildly estranged from the rest of the Hunters after the events of Book 6]]. He is, however, aware that his treatment of the Guild is unfair and makes a conscious effort to be more patient with them.
* TranquilFury: When a Mistrali commander informs him that [[spoiler:Mistral has no intention of honoring the peace treaty and that they intend to raze Ansel to the ground, Jaune, in a calm and controlled manner, burns the first of the soldiers alive, pulls a reforged Crocea Mors from their smoking corpse, [[BadassBoast and tells]] [[UnderestimatingBadassery the rest of the soldiers]] [[PreMortemOneLiner exactly how screwed they truly are.]]]]
* TranslatorMicrobes: [[spoiler:Runesight, a ''very'' high-level Blacksmith Skill, grants Jaune the ability to identify and understand Runes.]]
* TraumaCongaLine: What Jaune endures after [[spoiler:his Blacksmith class is revealed - he's rejected by his erstwhile friends in the Hunters, his relationship with Blake ends on acrimonious terms, and he's expelled after a thorough dressing-down from Ozpin]]. [[BreatherEpisode He is then able to return to his hometown and mentally recuperate while spending quality time with his family...]][[spoiler:before he is forced to slaughter a platoon of soldiers that tries to massacre his village and later kill the only woman who showed him any decency while he was at his lowest.]]
* UltimateBlacksmith: Jaune is the only known Blacksmith to have acquired [[FunctionalMagic Runesmithing]], and by Book 5 he may well be the highest level Blacksmith to ever exist. Jaune's own father, who himself is a high-level smith and who studied under his own father, an even higher level smith, states that Jaune's creations are easily the best in all of Remnant even when he makes them halfheartedly. [[spoiler:Raven kidnaps him for this very reason as she wants him to forge her an InfinityPlusOneSword.]]
* UnblockableAttack: [[spoiler:One of his Skills, presumably as a Sword Master, allows him to phase his sword in such a manner as to entirely bypass an opponent's defenses.]]
* UnderestimatingBadassery: [[spoiler:A Mistralian Knight thinks Jaune is a helpless NPC before being bested and cooked alive in his own armor. A Bladedancer comrade of his does the same, and gets her leg sliced off for her trouble.]]
* UnreliableNarrator:
** As the story is told mostly from his perspective, and he had an initially isolated upbringing, certain facts and observations he makes may not be accurate.
** This also becomes an apparent issue with his self-assessments, as many characters have pointed out [[YouAreBetterThanYouThinkYouAre he's not as bad as he believes himself to be]], and his judgement of his behavior in past events either overlooks or flatly contradicts key details.
* UnstoppableRage: When [[spoiler:Corvo]] was forced to sacrifice himself, Jaune became so enraged that the forced suggestion he was under lost all effect. Jaune then [[spoiler:easily impaled the corrupt Lord Roux before pushing him into [[DeathByIrony the very same pyre in which he had been sacrificing his victims.]]]]
* WhatTheHellHero:
** Delivers a pretty effective one to the rest of the party while in the dungeon. He calls out [[FantasticRacism Weiss and Blake for their continual sniping at each other]], [[BigSisterInstinct Yang for her overprotectiveness of Ruby making them both useless]], [[ChildhoodFriends Ren and Nora for retreating into themselves instead of helping]], and [[IJustWantToBeNormal Pyrrha for foisting leadership and strategy onto him when he has no tactical experience]]. Ruby is exempt from the rebuke, but she still feels bad as her [[spoiler:near death at the hands of a Beowolf]] is what caused a lot of the issues to begin with.
** Delivers another to the guild during their attempts at reconciliation midway through Book 7. [[spoiler:First, he confronts them on the discrimination they showed towards him after his class was revealed in the deserts of Vacuo wherein they took the dungeon sword from him and forced him to the center of their formation. He then continues to call them out by pointing out that they practically abandoned him once he was expelled from Beacon with no thought having been paid to the state he was in or how miserable he would be if he stayed as merely a Blacksmith.]] Jaune admits that he himself should have [[spoiler:revealed the truth of his Class to the rest of the guild]] before Vacuo, but that their actions still hurt.
* WhenAllYouHaveIsAHammer: Since he is a Blacksmith, Jaune doesn't actually get any combat related skills and his stats aren't distributed for combat. Jaune gets around this by using his high constitution and strength to trap opponents after they attack him and using his Skills [[PlayingWithFire to burn opponents]].
* WhiteMagic: [[spoiler:Jaune's path has been encouraging him to develop this so as to combat [[EldritchAbomination Salem.]] His latest skill, Purify Object, not only removes curses but also imbues objects with the ability to resist and repel Demonic taint. Salem finds this out the hard way.]]
* WorfHadTheFlu: [[spoiler:During an attack on New Dawn by Hero classes, Jaune struggles due to not wearing any armor, and needing to take hits to protect their leader that leaves him too injured to fight normally.]]
* WorkingThroughTheCold: [[spoiler:While held captive by Raven and the rest of her tribe, Jaune is forced to fight in a series of gladiatorial matches against a gauntlet of foes all while under the effects of a flu and an infected wound. This is an effort by Raven to force him to become addicted to LevelGrinding, something that Jaune [[ObfuscatingInsanity takes full advantage of.]]]]
* WorthyOpponent: Jaune's view of [[spoiler:Cinder]]. She fully reciprocates.
-->"And I [admired] you. I saw you as [[spoiler:a Princess]] who didn't care about Class or Caste. Someone who would [[spoiler:lead Mistral well]] and genuinely do the best for her people."
* WreckedWeapon:
** Jaune's Blacksmithing skills make this a valid combat tactic, allowing him to weaken the Berserker's ax, melt Glenn's spear, [[spoiler:[[GeometricMagic deface the runes on Watt's sword,]] and destroy Mistral's siege towers.]] He was also on the receiving end of this when Crocea Mors was destroyed during his confrontation with [[spoiler:Watts.]]
** [[spoiler:The Sword Master Class seems to be particularly geared to this with a lot of Jaune's Skills focused on destroying or disenchanting weapons and armor.]]
* YourNormalIsOurTaboo: Jaune runs afoul of this a few times at the start of the story, but is able to explain it away as a consequence of being raised among Labourers instead of Heroes.

He even confesses his lack of experience to the rest of the guild during their dungeon quest and to Cinder during the defense of Stoneskeep, but in both cases he still manages to rise to the occasion and lead his forces to victory.

Conversely, Jaune finds no pleasure in having to mow down waves of weaker enemies [[spoiler:as he was forced to do in the defense of Ansel.]]

* ConvectionSchmonvection: Jaune's passive makes him immune from the heat of his own forging processes, making metal he's heated feel room temperature. While Jaune initially dismissed it as a barely useful convenience for a Blacksmith, it later becomes something he relies on heavily, both to enable discrete forging around his guild, and in combat where it lets him destroy his enemies' equipment and eventually [[spoiler:to craft molten armor around himself to walk through a wall of fire with impunity.]]

to:

Changed Contrived Coincidence back as Jaune's involvement imay be highly contrived and convenient but is laid out by the story.
