A faction of ordinary Wastelanders dedicated to fighting for the freedom and safety of Synths. Their goal of saving and protecting Synths puts them in conflict with both the Institute (who view their Synths as nothing more than tools) and the Brotherhood of Steel (who believe all Synths must be destroyed as dangerous technology).
----
*RagtagBandOfMisfits: For the most part, they're just ordinary Wastelanders, without the resources and military might of the Institute or the Brotherhood of Steel. They don't even have the formal combat training that the Minutemen have, although they do have fighters, guns, and the willingness to use them.

* TheFriendNobodyLikes: All of your Good Aligned companions have a mild-to-severe dislike of the Brotherhood of Steel -- even if you're a member and traveling with others. Including [[NiceGuy Garvey]]. For their faults, when encountered out in the Wasteland, the Brotherhood's forces are at least reliably non-hostile towards the player and neutral Wastelanders (so long as you don't antagonize them), and will helpfully fight any Raiders or hostile mutants they come across.

* DoomedMoralVictor: What the Minutemen became for their actions. Sadly, the Commonwealth mostly considered the group idiots for it rather than admiring their principles and bravery.
* EliteMooks: Minutemen are basically the player's version of them.
* HeroWithBadPublicity: A DownplayedTrope version. The Minutemen are thought to be extinct and most people think their ending wasn't very smart. This starts to turn around when the Sole Survivor rebuilds them and shows why they're the good guys.
* LastStand: The Quincy massacre where they refused to abandon their charges against much-much superior odds.

* TraumaCongaLine: Their headquarters was attacked by a Mirelurk Queen (which is as strong as Dagon from ''Call of Cthulhu''), their leader was killed, a power struggle broke out, and then most of the remaining members died in a LastStand. It's been a rough couple of years.

* FaceHeelTurn: Not quite to 'Heel' status but they're now much more like the Brotherhood Outcasts and West Coast Brotherhood of Steel, which is decidedly neutral and self-serving in its politics.
** FaceHeelRevolvingDoor: It's now official that the Brotherhood simply ''can't make up its mind'' whether they're a group of KnightTemplar xenophobes or heroic badasses.

A mysterious cabal of scientists descended from the staff of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Little is known about them, apart from the fact that nobody's been able to get into their personal Vault, and that they are the creators of the synths.

* TheIlluminati: Played with. They have the thematic (an AncientConspiracy of usually faceless and always powerful individuals that manipulates events from behind the scenes), but their existence is publicly known to the Commonwealth.
* WhatMeasureIsANonHuman: They don't view synths as being much more human than Mr. Handies.

----

* BackFromTheBrink: The Sole Survivor can rebuild the settlements, the trust in the Minutemen, as well as recruit new soldiers until they're bigger than ever.
* BigGood: One of the few unambiguously good organizations in the Fallout setting.
* TheRemnant: As of the beginning of the game, Preston is the only survivor.

!! The East Coast Brotherhood of Steel

The same Brotherhood of Steel from ''Fallout 3'', it has since been taken over by Arthur Maxson and become significantly more like its progenitor in the West Coast Brotherhood. It is still friendlier to Wastelanders than before but no longer considers protecting the public their mandate.
----

* DramaticIrony: The West Coast Brotherhood is all but annihilated with the Mojave Chapter potentially the only survivors (and even they can get wiped out by the Courier). This is due to the ludicrously self-destructive policies they followed to the letter. By contrast, the East Coast Brotherhood is at the height of its power and has decided to start following the West Coast Brotherhood's policies.
* FantasticRacism: Against Synths, Ghouls, and Super Mutants.
* TheFundamentalist: Arthur Maxson is much more like his ancestor than his mentors in Elder Lyons and Sarah Lyons.
* TheFriendNobodyLikes: All of your Good Aligned Companions tend to have a mild-to-severe dislike of the Brotherhood of Steel--even if you're a member and traveling with others.
* HeelFaceTurn: Not quite to 'Heel' status but they're now much more like the Brotherhood Outcasts and West Coast Brotherhood of Steel, which is decidedly neutral and self-serving in its politics.
* MoralMyopia: The Brotherhood of Steel constantly talks about the misuse of technology and its abuse by others. They're a military dictatorship which is moving into the Commonwealth by virtue of its superior military might.
