These are all the members of Fairy Tail singled out to participate in an annual exam on the guild's sacred ground, Sirius Island (A.K.A. Tenrou Island).

The elderly, miniscule master of Fairy Tail. The members of his guild often give him grief for the trouble they cause between him and the Magic Council, but he loves them as if they were all his children. His mastery over many forms of magic, including the size-increasing Giant magic and Elemental magic, has earned him the title of one of the Ten Wizard Saints, who are widely regarded as the most powerful wizards alive.

* AttackOfTheFiftyFootWhatever: His magic allows him to turn any part of his body into that of a giant and he can use it on his whole body if he so wishes. Though when he's [[BerserkButton really ticked]], he only uses it for intimidation.
* BadassGrandpa: He's 88 years old when the series begins, but that doesn't stop him from being one of the strongest fighters in the series.
* BadassMustache: He has a large mustache, and is one of the most powerful wizards in Fiore and a Wizard Saint. Upgrades to a full-on BadassBeard over the second TimeSkip, having turned it into a goatee.
* BerserkButton: You can trash his guild however you like, but harming his subordinates? Not the best idea.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: He's usually quite amiable, but do ''not'' underestimate him!
* BewareTheSillyOnes: Eccentric and good-humored, but don't hurt anyone in his guild if you know what's good for you.
* BigGood: The master of Fairy Tail.
* BrainBleach: No one wants to see him naked, as the first OVA implies.
* CoolOldGuy: Usually, he's a pretty pleasant guy who acts as a father figure for everyone in Fairy Tail.
* CurbStompBattle: To Jose in the Phantom Lord arc.
** In the Sirius Island arc, Makarov is on the receiving end from Hades.
* DeusExitMachina: While he naturally wouldn't get involved in most of the series' conflicts, as the characters travel far and wide while he stays at home and looks after the guild, some threats do target the guild or the city it's in and considering he's one of the strongest members of the Ten Wizard Saints (the ten strongest wizards in the world), most threats that target the guild would have little chance of succeeding if he were allowed to enter the fray, so he's usually incapacitated in some way.
* DidWeJustHaveTeaWithCthulhu: Makarov was genuinely surprised by how friendly Emperor Spriggan was, who had him treated as a guest of the Empire with a comfortable room, good food, and even card games, with the Emperor indicating that he was more than willing to negotiate with him when it comes to Lumen Histoire. Makarov even admitted he was expecting the Emperor to be more of an EvilOverlord. [[OhCrap Then he finds out]] he's dealing with [[spoiler:[[TheDreaded Zeref]]]].
* DirtyOldMan: He has pretty girls in his guild and he knows it. His perverted ways are downplayed in the anime and largely disappear from the series as a whole after a while.
* EccentricMentor: Quirky, clumsy old man? Check. One of the series' strongest wizards who often guides or speaks to his wizards about what life and magic is? Check.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: Shows his guild a stack of complaints from the Magic Council for troubles they'd caused, scolds them all for getting the council mad at him ''again''...then burns the whole stack and pretty much says "Screw the Magic Council!"
* AFatherToHisMen: He considers every member of the guild to be his children.
* FridgeBrilliance: In-universe example. Laxus' whole takeover attempt in the Fantasia arc is just a teenage temper tantrum fueled by fear that he was seen as nothing more than the master's grandson. Makarov throwing him out of the guild publicly forces Laxus to take his own unique path.
* FriendlyFireproof: Fairy Law only harms those that Makarov considers an enemy.
* FrontlineGeneral: Whenever his guild goes to war with another, Makarov will always throw himself into the action.
* HeroicSacrifice: [[SubvertedTrope Subverted]]; he tries to sacrifice himself to protect his guild from Acnologia [[CrowningMomentOfHeartwarming but his kids won't let him.]]
** After [[spoiler:he disbands Fairy Tail, he alone goes to fend off the Albareth Empire to protect the members from an impending invasion]].
* HolyHandGrenade: His Fairy Law spell engulfs a huge area in holy light.
* IHaveNoSon: Subverted. This seems to be the case when he expels [[AntagonisticOffspring his son Ivan and grandson Laxus]] for bringing harm to their guild. However, he leads the guild in a warm sendoff for Laxus to prove he'll always watch over him, while he manages to keep a modicum of faith in Ivan for leaving his guild alone over the Time Skip.
* IWasQuiteALooker: Looked like a short, slender Laxus as a young man.
* TheLeader: He is the guild master of Fairy Tail, and the one who calls all the shots.
* LightEmUp: In his fight against Jose in the anime, which [[AdaptationExpansion showcases this more than the manga]].
* LightIsGood: He's a powerful user Light Magic and can wield Fairy Law, usually wears a white and gold coat, and is the Guild Master of Fairy Tail.
* LikeASonToMe: He considers all of the guild members to be his children.
* ManlyTears: After he expels Laxus and when his guild prevents him from making a HeroicSacrifice against Acnologia.

* PassingTheTorch: One of the {{Running Gag}}s in the series is his inability to decide on a good successor, and just when he thinks he has one picked out, something happens that leads him to consider him being master until the day he dies. He finally does choose Gildarts, but Gildarts retires and shoves the position back on Makarov before anyone even has a chance to know he is the new master in the first place. [[spoiler: Erza does the same, only with SLIGHTLY more time as leader.]] This means that Makarov is, all at once, the third, sixth ''and'' eighth master of the Fairy Tail guild (Macao having served as the 4th master during the Tenrou Island time skip).
* PowerPerversionPotential: Takes advantage of his SizeShifter abilities to grope girls.
* SizeShifter: Though unlike the standard, he's one of the strongest characters in the series.
* ScrewTheRulesImDoingWhatsRight: The entire guild embodies this, but Makarov is the one who encourages this kind of behavior.
* StuffedInTheFridge: [[spoiler:Emperor Spriggan was planning on [[InvokedTrope invoking]] this with Makarov, sending his body to Natsu in order to piss him off, but [[SubvertedTrope he was saved in time]] by [[BigDamnHeroes Doranbolt]].]]
* TeamDad: He's the master of Fairy Tail, so this kind of goes without saying. Natsu even calls him "gramps".
* TheWorfEffect: Was hit with this during the Phantom Lord arc to hype up Aria and the other members of the Element Four.

The founder and first master of Fairy Tail. Her grave is located on Sirius Island, Fairy Tail's holy ground. While alive, she employed Illusion Magic, creating apparitions reminiscent of Sirius Island. Her spirit continues to watch over her guild to guide them; she is also responsible for protecting the Tenrou Group from Acnologia's attack, freezing them in time for seven years.

* AChildShallLeadThem: She was born in X673, and Fairy Tail was founded in X686. This would make her thirteen years old when the guild was founded, an [[ImprobableAge unprecedentedly young age]] for a Guild Master even in the present. Considering her co-founders were Hades/Precht (the ArcVillain of the Sirius Island Arc), Warrod Sequen (a member of the [[TheArchmage Four Gods of Ishgar]]), and Yuriy Dreyar (Makarov's father), let that sink in a moment as to what that [[ChildProdigy has to mean]] about Mavis' level of [[WiseBeyondTheirYears power and intelligence]].
* ACupAngst: In the fourth OVA, she just so happened to sneak into a FuroScene involving [[WorldOfBuxom many of the female members of Fairy Tail]]. HilarityEnsues.
* AllLovingHeroine: You ''know'' she's one when she's willing to [[spoiler:befriend TheDreaded by conjuring up illusions for him to pet]].
* AnAstralProjectionNotAGhost: [[spoiler:Mavis is not a ghost, in fact she's immortal. What we see is an AstralProjection while her OnlyMostlyDead physical body is encased in a crystal in suspended animation.]]
* AwesomeByAnalysis:
** In the four days that the Grand Magic Games took place, she recorded and memorized ''all'' the rival teams' stats and battles, and uses them to give Fairy Tail a strategy for victory.
** Fairy Tail Zero shows that she's always had this ability, shown when she effortlessly beats Yuri in a game of observation by counting the number of times he'd blinked since they started the game (since Yuri hadn't counted the number of times he blinked he couldn't say either true or false because it would be a guess either way and not the absolute truth).
* BarefootPoverty: Imposed on her by old and cruel guildmaster, who decided she was undeserving of the boots he had bought her. Mavis had to go barefoot and soil her feet, much to her chagrin. But she got used to not having shoes, until being shoeless grew on her. Mavis found it much more enjoyable to have bare feet all the time, started forgetting to put on or bring shoes with her even when she had the freedom to wear some, and then abandoned wearing them forever in favor of staying perpetually barefooted.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: When Zeref tells her he plans to annihilate all living beings in Chapter 340, she responds it's the opposite. She will assure Fairy Tail will annihilate him, without any hesitating on her part.
* BewareTheSillyOnes: As Yuriy [[OutGambitted found out the hard way]].
* BigGood: Ever since her spirit left Sirius Island, she arguably shares, if not outranks, Makarov as this.
** With Chapter 340 out (and later 406), it's pretty much solidified that she outranks Makarov. Especially with her deep connection to Zeref, and the fact that she's [[spoiler:Lumen Histoire]].
* BreakTheCutie: [[spoiler:The awaken of her InstantDeathRadius broke Mavis ''bad''. When Zeref met her a year later, Mavis was a shell of herself that only wanted to die.]]
* BreakoutCharacter: Not only was she a HeroOfAnotherStory with ''[[OriginStory Fairy Tail Zero]]'', but she takes a central role in the ''[[WarArc Albareth Empire Arc]]'' after her backstory was revealed, and the former turned out to be so popular that it has been confirmed to be receiving its own anime adaptation.
* BroodingBoyGentleGirl: The Gentle Girl to [[spoiler:Zeref]]'s Brooding Boy. [[spoiler:She was the first person to show him kindness in his lonely immortal life and once she became immortal like him, she was the only one able to understand his pain and suggested them to give EternalLove a shot to at least have each other. Sadly, the curse is hellbent in not allowing Zeref to be happy in any way.]]

* ConvenientlyAnOrphan: In ''Fairy Tail Zero''. Her parents were both members of Red Lizard, but they died... unfortunately while being up to their eyeballs in debt, which Mavis herself then had to work off.
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: She's childish, ditzy, and obsessed with fairies, but just ask [[BigBad Zeref]] and [[OutGambitted Yuriy]] what she's like when the chips are down.
* CryCute: The waterworks really kick off when she considers the possibility of her strategy going up in smoke due to a miscalculation.

* DarkAndTroubledPast: Mavis lost her parents as a very young child, and was taken in by a guild that treated her like a slave, and was even spurned by the guildmaster's daughter. When a big fight erupted in the guild and spilled over into the town where it was stationed, only the guildmaster's daughter and she were the only ones to survive.
* DatingCatwoman: [[spoiler:She's the benevolent First Master of Fairy Tail who was romantically involved with the feared evil wizard Zeref.]]
* DeathGlare: Delivers one to Zeref, the undisputed ''king'' of {{Death Glare}}s in this series, that would rival one of his own. It's even more unnerving in the anime.
* DespairEventHorizon: [[spoiler:Her InstantDeathRadius activates, and claims Makarov's mother Rita as its first victim. Mavis reacted as could have been predicted.]]
* DiedInYourArmsTonight: [[spoiler:Played in the most tragic way possible as she died in Zeref's arms after they shared their first and only kiss.]]

* ElegantGothicLolita: Spends quite a few chapters in ''Fairy Tail Zero'' wearing this type of dress. She even refers to herself as "[[spoiler:Black Wizard]] Mavis" while wearing it.
* EnemyToAllLivingThings: [[spoiler:She has the same curse as Zeref. As long as she cares about others, she will always be a threat to their lives. Zeref states that the only reason the InstantDeathRadius part of her curse hadn't manifested itself yet was because of Mavis' willingness to [[PragmaticHero issue orders that resulted in the deaths of enemies and allies alike]] during the Second Trade War, satisfying the "sees no value in life" CurseEscapeClause.]]
* EmptyEyes: Her eyes never reflect highlights. This could have been because she's a ghost, light just passes through her instead of reflecting off of her eyes. [[spoiler: It's actually because she, like Zeref, has Ankhseram's Curse. His eyes are all black with no pupils. Hers are all green with no pupils... until her curse activates and she also gains the UhOhEyes.]]
* EternalLove: [[spoiler:Tragically subverted. Once she became immortal like Zeref, Mavis told Zeref that even if the world rejected both of them, they still have each other and could find a way to break the curse together. However, since the curse kills anything the cursed one loves, Zeref ended up killing her with his kiss.]]
* FailedASpotCheck: Odd she didn't consider in her calculations of the possibility of someone like Kagura picking a fight with Erza given the shared history they have with Jellal at some point in their lives.

* HeroicBSOD:
** In ''Fairy Tail Zero'', the guild master of Blue Skull being able to see through her illusions and dispel them with a dust storm caused one of these in her; [[spoiler:especially after both Yuriy and Precht were grievously injured in the ensuing fight, and were forced to retreat]].
** She has an even bigger one once Zeref [[spoiler:tells her the ''real'' reason she hasn't grown up, and says that it's only a matter of time before her InstantDeathRadius activates.]]

* HorribleJudgeOfCharacter: [[PlayingWithATrope Played with.]] At the time, [[spoiler:Zeref]] really wasn't that bad of a guy; just a self-loathing CosmicPlaything who was forced to become TheAloner. [[spoiler:She becomes his friend - probably the first and only real friend he's had in centuries, if not ''ever'' - and [[BecauseYouWereNiceToMe he was so moved by the experience]] that he gives them the edge they need to defeat Blue Skull.]] She even dresses up in ElegantGothicLolita and calls herself "[[spoiler:Black Wizard]] Mavis," showing she knew exactly who he was. And then he TookALevelInJerkass...
* HumanPopsicle: [[spoiler:Lumen Historie is her body frozen in a crystal thanks to Precht trying to save her life. Whether it's her corpse or she's in suspended animation has yet to be revealed. If Chapter 451 is accurate, it's the latter.]]

* LivingMacGuffin: [[spoiler:Being Lumen Histoire, or Fairy Heart as it is less commonly known, a source of supposedly infinite Magical Power, Albareth is willing to wage war on Ishgar to claim her. Or more accurately, Zeref is.]]
* TheLostLenore: [[spoiler:To Zeref. She was the first and only woman he ever loved, but his curse wouldn't allow him to be happy with her. Her 'death' was where his real StartOfDarkness began.]]
* MasterOfIllusion: In ''Fairy Tail Zero'', this was originally the only magic she knew. Her illusions are convincing enough that she was able to bluff an enemy into giving up all the info he knew by conjuring an illusionary monster. Especially impressive since she was almost entirely self-taught.
* MerlinAndNimue: [[spoiler:Zeref was her magic teacher. Because she used an incomplete version of the Law that he taught her, she ended up cursed like him. Mavis wanted her and Zeref to form an EternalLove relationship to have each other and find a way to break the curse together, but sadly them falling in love with each other got her killed.]]
* AMotherToHerMen: She uses Fairy Sphere to protect the guild members on Sirius Island from Acnologia's attack.
* MyGreatestFailure: She never expected Precht to turn out the way he did when she chose him as master. Because of that, she blames herself for knowledge of Lumen Histoire leaking to Ivan. He's one of the toughest sons of bitches in a guild where being tough is par for the course, and his lightning magic is ridiculously powerful. This doesn't even take into account him being a Dragon Slayer or having Fairy Law in his arsenal. A perfect example of this comes up in his fight with Mystogan: Mystogan hit him with a devastating spell that took so long to set up that he needed to use illusions to keep Laxus occupied and buy himself enough time to cast it. When Laxus figured this out, he hit Mystogan with an equally powerful spell that he just fired off in the seconds it took for the latter's spell to activate. (although the two are considered to be equals, Laxus is more combat oriented while Mystogan specializes in stealth and utility)
** Interestingly, before his CharacterDevelopment, he had a tendency to turn himself into a FragileSpeedster[=/=]GlassCannon. His [[{{Pride}} arrogance]] had him cast ridiculously powerful and costly spells (read: Fairy Law) when he really didn't need to, which caused him to wear himself out and make it easier (read: actually possible) for Natsu to beat him. However, he's since grown out of this.
* ManlyTears: When he is excommunicated, Fairy Tail gives him the send-off of a lifetime to let him know that [[CrowningMomentOfHeartwarming they still consider him one of their own]], causing him to cry on his way out.

This doesn't even take into account him being a Dragon Slayer or having Fairy Law in his arsenal. A perfect example of this comes up in his fight with Mystogan: Mystogan hit him with a devastating spell that took so long to set up that he needed to use illusions to keep Laxus occupied and buy himself enough time to cast it. When Laxus figured this out, he hit Mystogan with an equally powerful spell that he just fired off in the seconds it took for the latter's spell to activate. (although the two are considered to be equals, Laxus is more combat oriented while Mystogan specializes in stealth and utility)

* MadeOfIron: In the anime, he takes a surprise attack from [[EliteMook Kowazu and gets right back up with a big grin on his face. For emphasis, this was the same attack that ''broke Gajeel's iron scales''.]]
