The main group of protagonists in the series. The team initially consists of Natsu, Happy and Lucy, but Gray and Erza join the team after tagging along a number of times. Wendy and Carla also become unofficial additions to the team. Other guild members that have had on-off membership include Juvia, Gajeel, Elfman, and (most recently) Mest.

The team has no official name, so "Team Natsu" is what the American fanbase has decided to call them.

* BadassCrew: Recognized as Fairy Tail's strongest team.
* BerserkButton: Do ''not'' even attempt to harm a child in front of ''any'' member of Team Natsu. The Alvarez guards found that out the hard way.
* BlondeBrunetteRedhead: The ladies: Lucy as the Blonde, Wendy as the Brunette (dark blue), and Erza as the Redhead.
* BokeAndTsukkomiRoutine: Natsu/Erza as the boke with Gray/Lucy as tsukkomi. Happy tends to zig-zag with the trope.
* BrownEyes: All of the girls (including Carla) have these, and are [[WomenAreWiser significantly more rational]] than the guys (though Erza depends on the situation).

* CombinationAttack: Despite not actually fighting a single enemy together very often, during their battle with Hades, they displayed this in the form of launching Natsu at the enemy at high speeds. Twice.
* {{Covert Pervert}}s: Natsu, Gray and Erza freely looked through Lucy's underwear drawer while Lucy keeps centerfolds of a bikini-clad Mirajane.
** Averted with Wendy, as she becomes ''highly'' embarrassed when exposed to Gray's stripping habit, and Loke's less than innocent relations with Michello's granddaughter.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: All of their backstories are quite tragic and sad. To elaborate:
** Natsu was left by Igneel and the person he made a ChildhoodMarriagePromise dies (not really).
** Gray loses his birth parents at Deliora's hands and then loses his new mom because of his actions, as well as causing his technical brother to hate him.
** Erza's family was killed by kidnappers that enslaved her, until she led a revolt that cost her not only an eye, but her friends' loyalty. Also, she lost her (adoptive) grandmother in a carriage accident.
** Lucy's mother died when she was young, and her father became emotionally distant towards her after that.
** Wendy, like Natsu, was left by her dragon (when she was still about 5 years old) and then left to wander the world with Mystogan until he left her.
* {{Destructive Savior}}s: Most of their missions' pay goes to the repairs of the place that they destroyed, much to Lucy's ire.

* FourTemperamentEnsemble:
** Sanguine: Happy, a cheerful cat who has a nasty habit of cracking jokes at the expense of his teammates.
** Choleric: Natsu/Carla. Natsu is a HotBlooded {{Determinator}} who will stop at nothing to protect the guild's name, and Carla is an arrogant, bossy little cat who initially cares about little more than keeping Wendy safe.
** Melancholic: Erza, who is serious, standoffish, and one of the more strategic members of Team Natsu. She felt very lonely and isolated for a large part of her life.
** Phlegmatic: Gray/Wendy. Gray is introverted, (relatively) down to Earth, and tends to hide his emotions, while Wendy is a kind ShrinkingViolet who, unlike most of the guild members, doesn't particularly enjoy fighting.
** Leukine: Lucy, is usually a peace-loving bookworm, but she's the most cheerful member of Team Natsu after Natsu himself, and has her moments when she is easily pissed off.
* HeroesFightBarehanded: Natsu, contrasting rivals: [[ShapeshifterWeapon Gajeel]] and [[AnIcePerson Gray]], who all use weaponry of some sort.
* HeroicBSOD: PlayedForLaughs. Along with Levy, Juvia and Wendy after it's revealed that one day in the Celestial Spirit World is equal to three months in Earth-land, which they should have spent training for the Great Magic Games.
* HonorBeforeReason: A lot of the times they ''don't'' end up having to pay a huge repair bill, Natsu or Erza are [[ScrewTheMoneyIHaveRules usually refusing a payment for one reason or another]].
* LikeBrotherAndSister: Erza, Natsu, Gray and Lucy. Natsu and Gray are prone to even [[UpToEleven more excessive levels]] of violence and [[CrowningMomentOfAwesome bad-assery]] if they learn Erza and/or Lucy are in genuine danger and Erza was willing to be ''vaporized'' and then later ''atomized'' to try and protect Natsu.
** Also, Wendy is often treated like a little sister by every member of the team.
* OlderThanTheyLook: Courtesy of the Sirius Island incident coupled with the TimeSkip, they are all seven years younger than they're supposed to be and look.
* ParentalAbandonment. This extends to the guild as a whole but it really shows when the core team is focused upon.
* PowerUp: They're all substantially weaker after the TimeSkip, even weaker than Max, but [[TookALevelInBadass take a massive level in badass]] when Ultear helps them achieve "Second Origin", activated by Ultear's Arc of Time, which gives them access to their latent magical reserves and effectively doubles their power.
* RedOniBlueOni: If it wasn't already obvious by their respective hair colors and abilities, Natsu the ''Fire'' Dragon Slayer and Gray the ''Ice'' Make Wizard/[[spoiler:Demon Slayer]]. Natsu has this dynamic with Gajeel and Lucy too...and pretty much any other character he tends to be paired with.
* TheThreeFacesOfEve: [[ChildMage Wendy]] is the Child, [[OnlySaneMan Lucy]] is the Wife, and [[ShamelessFanserviceGirl Erza]] is the Seductress.
* ThreePlusTwo: As mentioned above; Natsu, Happy & Lucy are the three, Gray & Erza are the two.
* TookALevelInBadass: There's no doubt they get more and more badass as the story progresses, but all the levels they obtain are instantaneously doubled when they unlock their "[[PowerUp Second Origin]]". It lets Natsu [[CurbStompBattle single-handedly]] beat [[SuperMode Dragon Forced]]-powered, [[AllYourColorsCombined Unison Raid]]-using [[Characters/FairyTailOtherGuilds Sting and Rogue]] without having to do the same, and lets Erza use her InfinityPlusOneSword on Minerva.
** Wendy, Lucy, and Gray get their moments in the Tartarus arc. [[spoiler:Wendy attains [[SuperMode Dragon Force]] to defeat Ezel. Lucy summons the [[InfinityPlusOneSword Celestial Spirit King]], who destroys [[EldritchAbomination Cube]] and frees Fairy Tail from Alegria, gains Aquarius's [[MakingASplash Water Magic]] and defeats Jackal by casting [[StarPower Uranometria]]. Gray gains his father's [[DemonSlaying Ice Demon Slayer Magic]], allowing him to [[CurbStompBattle curb-stomp]] Tempester.]]
* TwoGirlsToATeam: The series mostly played this straight, with Lucy and Erza as the two girls to Natsu, Gray, and Happy, making the ratio 3:2 in favor of the guys... Unless you don't count Happy, the nonhuman, which makes it equal. Even if you do count Happy, Wendy coming into the picture tips the ratio in favor of the girls, since she brings Carla, another nonhuman, with her.
* VitriolicBestBuds: Natsu and Gray. Occasionally Natsu and Erza. Happy and Lucy have shades of it as well.

Natsu the "Salamander" is the main male protagonist of the series. He was raised by the dragon Igneel to become the Fire Dragon Slayer, giving him the power to breathe, attack with, defend against, and even eat fire. He was abandoned after Igneel mysteriously disappeared on July 7, 777, seven years before the series begins. He has since joined Fairy Tail in the hopes of reuniting with Igneel and finding out what happened. He's generally regarded as Fairy Tail's problem child, but no one is more loyal to the guild than he is.

* AdaptationDyeJob: He has redder hair in the manga.
* AdultFear: When [[LikeASonToMe Happy]] is captured by [[{{Jerkass}} Minerva]], who [[WouldHurtAChild threatens to kill him]] if Natsu doesn't obey her demands, he does so without any second thoughts.
* AlmightyJanitor: He's almost ''always'' the one to beat the arc's ArcVillain, and even though Erza outranks him, she's admitted a few times that he's at least her equal, if not stronger. [[JustifiedTrope Justified]] in that S-Class requires more than just fighting ability; Natsu is very impulsive and frequently gets in over his head.
** He is given the chance to escape this during the S-Class promotion exam, though that chance is ruined after the exam is interrupted and ultimately canceled thanks to Grimoire Heart.
* AmnesiacHero: When he first meets Wendy, he can't help but feel like he's seen her before. And then there's the fact that [[spoiler: he's Zeref's younger brother, and END, and remembers none of it.]]
* AttackAttackAttack: Natsu isn't one to hold back in a fight and he doesn't have many defensive abilities either.
* BackFromTheDead: [[spoiler:He died at a very young age, but was resurrected as an Etherious.]]
* {{Badass}}: TheHero of Fairy Tail, rarely loses a serious fight, and takes down the BigBad in most arcs.
* BadassAdorable: He's hyperactive, optimistic and a protective sweetheart towards Lucy (though he cares about his other guildmates), but that doesn't stop him from being one of the best fighters in the guild.
* BadassLongcoat: In the first episode/chapter.
* BattleAura: When Natsu's emotions are at their peak in the midst of battle, his enemy can see the image of Igneel overlapping him. More normally, his flames can give him the appearance of this as well.
* TheBattleDidntCount: Said towards Laxus as he had to use outside help (Gajeel) to beat him. Laxus, by this point having mellowed out, agrees.
* BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor: [[spoiler:Igneel finally appears in the ''Tartaros'' arc... and is then KilledOffForReal by [[HeroKiller Acnologia]] right in front of him.]]
* BerserkButton: As a firm believer in the modern concept of TrueCompanions, you had better hope Natsu never catches wind of you betraying your own. He also has a lot of pride in his guild, similar to how [[OnePiece Luffy]] hates tarnishing the pirate flag.
** Harming any of his guildmates, ''especially'' Lucy, will bring down his fiery-lightning wrath.
* TheBerserker: Natsu lives this. He's an incredibly reckless fighter, throwing himself into battles and destroying everything in his path. It doesn't help that his magic gets boosted by his rages.
* BerserkerTears: After he sees Future Rogue kill Future Lucy and plan to do the same with Present Lucy. ''No one'' takes away Lucy's future and gets away with it.
* BewareTheNiceOnes[=/=]BewareTheSillyOnes: He's an affable and goofy guy when you get to know him. Heaven forbid anyone gets on his bad side.
* BigBrotherInstinct: Doesn't matter if you're a giant, man-eating dragon, he'll still yell at you if you're too close to Wendy.
* BigBrotherMentor: Because Fairy Tail sees its members as a giant family Wendy sees him in this light, learning how to use her magic for combat and use Dragon Force from him. She admits that the only reason she went to stop Orcaion Seis is because she really wanted to meet him.
* BigEater: Often combines this with his [[NoSell fire proof nature]] to eat his enemies attacks
* BladeRun: Natsu runs across Ikusatsunagi's sword, which is big enough to split the ground under him, and climbs on top of his head, destroying him.
* BlazingInfernoHellfireSauce: One of his many weapons in the second OVA.
* BreathWeapon: The ever-classic fire breath.
* BreakTheCutie: [[spoiler:Just look at the utter despair in his face as he watches Acnologia kill Igneel. Considering finding Igneel had been his primary goal pretty much throughout the entire series, having a front-row seat for Igneel's rather FamilyUnfriendlyDeath has got to be the DespairEventHorizon for him...]]
* BrokeYourArmPunchingOutCthulhu: With Laxus' magic power added to his own, he lands the final blow on Hades. He then falls down, completely out of magic power and too sore to move at all, and watches helplessly as Hades gets back up and goes OneWingedAngel.
** Pretty much every time he uses Dragon Force it's to beat the tar out of a Big Bad but he usually ends up out of commission for a week with a nasty case of [[ExtremeOmnivore food poisoning]]. In fact, he ran out of magic power before he could actually beat Mard Geer, leaving Gray to finish the job.
* BurningWithAnger: Quite often.
* ButtMonkey: Of all people, he's one in the Eclipse Spirit arc, including getting sent flying multiple times.
* CainAndAbel: [[spoiler: Abel to Zeref Dragneel's Cain. While Natsu was clueless of his relation to Zeref for the first 465 chapters, he is definitely a force for good who treasures family links and companionship, while Zeref is hell-bent on eradicating mankind.]]
* CallingYourAttacks: Standard for the series and for Shonen protagonists.
* CantLiveWithoutYou: [[spoiler:Natsu is an Etherious tied to a Book of Zeref which is powered by Zeref's magic. [[{{Synchronization}} If Zeref dies, Natsu dies]].]]
* CatchPhrase: "I'm all fired up"--which he says in basically every fight he's in.
* CharlesAtlasSuperpower: In one omake, it is shown that he can uproot an entire tree by himself.
* ChasteHero: [[ZigzaggedTrope Zigzagged]]. Most of the time, he remains oblivious to the embarrassment of seeing naked women or them seeing him naked, but there are exceptions such as when he tries to peep at the girls in the hot springs or when he gets a little embarrassed at seeing Gildarts' magazines.
* ChildhoodFriendRomance: Apparently had this with Lisanna in the anime before she was killed some time before the series began. Later she's revealed in the Edolas arc to be alive after all, and she gives no shortage of affection to him once they are reunited for real. However, this has been subverted because ever since their reunion they haven't interacted much at all.
* ClothingDamage: [[MrFanservice Not that he wore much to begin with]]...
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: Doesn't seem to understand why Lucy would be annoyed with him peeking at her in the shower, among other things.
* CovertPervert: Wanted to peek at Lucy while she was in the shower, has a habit of hiding in her bed, and in the first OVA, tried to peek at the girls swimming, only to find Makarov swimming.
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: He doesn't seem very intelligent, but he is a genius in a fight, constantly improvising new ways to beat tougher oponnents.
* DeadlyUpgrade: Eating any kind of magic besides fire, such as Etherion, activates "[[SuperMode Dragon Force]]", making him far more powerful, but with severe after-effects. Activating it more naturally gets rid of the after-effects.
** Laxus 'gave' Natsu lightning, which while draining him at the time, eventually ended up making Natsu that much more destructive.
** [[spoiler:He manages to activate Dragon Force on his own during Chapter 411.]]
* DeadpanSnarker: In the earliest chapters of the manga, he has a few funny snark moments with Lucy, who he treats more like an annoying newcomer. Once Lucy becomes more acclimatized to Fairy Tail, Natsu and Lucy's roles are switched.
** He has more moments of snark in Creator/FUNimation's dub.
* {{Determinator}}: While a typical Fairy Tail trait, Natsu takes this to some rather extreme levels. Eventually, Gildarts [[KnowWhenToFoldEm calls him out on this]] because [[RealityEnsues it will get Natsu killed if he keeps it up.]]
* DesignatedVillain: [[InvokedTrope Invoked]] in order to help Mystogan unite Edolas after everyone starts freaking out over what they think to be TheEndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt.
* DoItYourselfThemeTune: His seiyuu sings the opening of the [=OVA=]s. It's a duet with Gray's.
* DragonRider: In the battle against Future Rogue, he rides Atlas Flame.
* EveryoneHasStandards: Natsu is always looking for a good fight, regardless of the age or gender of his opponent. That doesn't mean he enjoys senseless murder and slaughter. He likes the chance to test his skills; to see which is the bigger BadAss.
* ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin: Dragon Slayer magic. [[InformedAbility It can supposedly]] slay dragons. Not that we doubt it, seeing what Natsu can do. Oddly, [[HoistByHisOwnPetard he was taught this magic by a dragon, Igneel]].
* {{Expy}}:
** Take [[Manga/RaveMaster Haru Glory]], swap the sword for fire powers, turn BoisterousBruiser UpToEleven until it becomes HotBlooded, and replace "I need to find my dad" with "I need to find the dragon who is more or less my dad". Basically speaking, it's [[WhatDoYouMeanItsNotSymbolic turning]] [[MeaningfulName Spring into Summer]].
** His fighting style and appearance are also similar to [[Manga/RaveMaster Let]].
** As of the end of the Tartaros arc, he also has definite elements of [[spoiler: [[Manga/{{Devilman}} Ryo Asuka]]. Both are [[DemonLordsAndArchdevils rulers of demons]], who [[AmnesiacDissonance lost their memories]], and though themselves to be humans. With Ryo proving to be {{Satan}}, and Natsu being [[SatanicArchetype the "Guild Master" of Tartaros, E.N.D.]] ]]
* ExtremeOmnivore: While it's supposedly natural for him to try to eat fire, he has eaten a burning piece of paper, ''lightning'', and Etherion. The latter two have side effects that show that actually being an ExtremeOmnivore is a bad idea for Natsu.
* FashionableAsymmetry: Post-TimeSkip, at least until halfway through the Grand Magic Games arc.
* FearlessFool: However, thanks to his fight with Gildarts, Gildarts teaches him a much-needed lesson on feeling fear, which he takes to heart.
* FeedItWithFire: Regains stamina from eating any flames he did not generate himself.
* FieryRedhead: His hair is more pink than red, but he's the most HotBlooded character in the team.
* FierySalamander: Obviously, his AnimalMotifs.
* {{Fireballs}}: Two of his techniques, specifically, Fire Dragon's Roar and, in the anime, Fire Dragon's Brilliant Flame make use of this.
* FishOutOfTemporalWater: [[spoiler:Natsu was originally born over 400 years before before the start of the main storyline as Zeref's younger brother. After he was killed as a small child, Zeref ultimately resurrected Natsu by turning him into an Etherious/Demon with no memory of his past. He was then sent forward in time via the Eclipse Gate with the rest of the dragon-raised Dragon Slayers]].
* FlingALightIntoTheFuture: [[spoiler: Revealed to have been sent 400 years into the future due to a plan by Zeref and Igneel so he could become stronger and defeat Zeref himself and Acnologia.]]
* ForceAndFinesse: The Force to Wendy's Finesse, as he can be easy to rile up, and often overwhelms his opponents with sheer power and ferocity.
* FriendToAllChildren: He has a warm, brotherly relationship with Wendy and Romeo, and intentionally throws a play match with Asuka so he can pacify her as her servant for a day in an omake, even deliberately making her think she took down a bandit by herself.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: [[spoiler: Remember in Battle of Fairy Tail Arc when Natsu couldn´t pass Freed's runes, which couldn´t be passed by people more than 80 years old? Well, that is because he is actually 400 years old.]] [[spoiler: Actually it was because he (and the other Dragon Slayers) unknowingly had their well over 400 year old dragon parents inside them to prevent dragonification. Natsu ''is'' from 400 years ago but he was sent forward in time so he's didn't actually live through all those years.]]
** A particularly brilliant example of it comes from the Edolas arc, doubling as a FunnyAneurysmMoment. [[spoiler: His ZeroApprovalGambit where he pretended to be a demon king? Turns out he really is one and he had no idea. Funnily enough, Carla pulled the same stunt as the princess of Extalia in the same arc]].
* FutureMeScaresMe: Used in practically the most literal sense possible in the third OVA. He claims to have met some kind of maniac and ended up getting a [[ScarsAreForever scar on his neck was he was a kid, which has forever traumatized him. Said maniac was actually his present self who was sent back in time and disguised beyond recognition, and was actually beating his past self up because he lost to Gray in a fight. Past!Natsu ended up scratching his own neck in the process.]]
* GlowingEyesOfDoom: Whenever he is pissed, his faced becomes shadowed while his eyes glow [[RedEyesTakeWarning red]].
* GoalInLife: To find Igneel, which [[spoiler:finally comes true after 14 years. After Igneel's death, he has a new goal now: kill Acnologia.]]
* GoodIsNotSoft: Any villain who crosses the line or hits a BerserkButton of his will feel his wrath.
* TheHero: Lucy's TheProtagonist and Erza's TheLeader, but Natsu is the traditional hero, especially on Fairy Tail's team in the [[TournamentArc Grand Magic Games arc]].
* HeroicBSOD: A bit ambiguous. His words in chapter 434 could imply that he ''did'' fall into one after the events of Tartaros: "That bond was all I needed to keep me afloat!" However, given the wording, and context of his speech, it's safe to assume he successfully overcame it.
** A straighter example is when [[spoiler: Zeref reveals to Natsu that he is his brother and that Natsu is [=END=] the strongest Etherious. Needless to say, he doesn't take it well]]
* HeroicRROD: Natsu normally eats fire to keep his strength up in battle. But he achieves an even higher form of power called "Dragon Force" when he eats magical substances that contain multiple elements other than fire, such as Etherion. Once the effects wear off, he falls sick for up to a few days at a time.
** Directly eating other individual magical elements, such as Laxus' lightning magic, allows him to combine the properties of that element with his fire magic. But since they're not fire, he falls sick all the same. Once he unlocks his [[PowerUp Second Origin, however, he is able to activate that other magic as he pleases without the negative side effects.]]
** [[spoiler:Blaze King Dragon Mode leaves an "anti-Ethernano" tumor that would have killed him if Brandish hadn't shrunken it.]]
* HeroicSacrifice: [[SubvertedTrope Subverted.]] [[spoiler:He was going to kill Zeref, despite knowing (or possibly not believing) that he would die if he dealt the final blow. Happy ''would not let him do it,'' and grabbed Natsu and dragged him off back to Fairy Tail before the blow landed.]]
* HotBlooded: His fire magic feeds on his emotions, so it's only natural.
* {{Hypocrite}}: Repeatedly gets angry at other guild members for [[spoiler:going off and doing their own thing after Fairy Tail disbands]], despite the fact that he did pretty much the exact same without any warning thing right before [[spoiler:the guild disbanded]]. {{Lampshaded}} repeatedly by Lucy.
** In his defense however, Natsu didn't ''know'' that [[spoiler:the guild was going to disband before he went on his journey]]. Doesn't change the fact that he's a hypocrite but you can cut him some slack as he probably thought Lucy would be fine on her own as she had the other guild members to take care of her.
* IdiotHero: [[SubvertedTrope Subverted]]. In the first episode of the Eclipse Celestial Spirits arc, she wore herself out by summoning each of her spirits to grant them a wish. She even declines celestial wizard Yukino's offer to give Lucy the remaining two Zodiac keys until she feels Yukino is ready to part with them. Fast-forward to the Tartaros arc, where he faces the threat of everyone who Ur cared about being murdered. Five years old, and entirely alone, Wendy has to good fortune to cross paths with Mystogan, who cared for her for a few months before leaving her at the guild Cait Shelter. Seven years later, Wendy watches as the guild; her home and family, vanish right before her eyes. She is of the same species as Happy, a talking cat who can use Aera magic to grow wings and fly. Unlike Happy, she was born with knowledge of what she and Happy really are--something she holds Happy in disdain for. She only joins Fairy Tail to keep an eye on Wendy, but soon finds herself growing accustomed to her new friends, including her blue counterpart.
