* DystopiaJustifiesTheMeans: After being victorious in the civil war, Brother One [[spoiler:forces the population to leave the cities completely, instead being sent to collective farms. Then, he bases the entire economy on the export of rice to sponsor new industrialization, claiming this strategy will turn Cambodia into an economic powerhouse just, just like Stalin sponsored his five-year plans with agricultural exports, completely ignoring Stalin didn't abandon existing industry and certainly didn't force the people out of the cities]]. Once his plan is set into motion, [[spoiler:Cambodia experiences a horrific starvation crisis due to overexporting, killing millions and basically destroying the country in all ways possible.]] All of this is meant to make Cambodia into a great power by reestablishing the order of the old Khmer Empire. Additionally, Brother One despises educated people [[spoiler:in spite of being a teacher himself]], claiming they abandoned traditional Cambodian teachings in favour of imported, impure ideals. [[spoiler:After getting into power, he will order an outright genocide of everyone considered intellectual.]]

* LaResistance: Rebel groups are active on pretty much the entire territory. In the North, pro-Vietnamese FUNSK holds more authority, in the West, the Khmer Rouge controls the countryside, ruling from the expansive rainforest. Even in the areas close to Phnom Penh, there are weaker rebel groups under the command of Mam Sonando. The government is effectively unable to control any area it doesn't directly establish a garrison at.

* LesCollaborateurs: To the average citizen, Nol is the one who couped Sihanouk in order to allow America to continue bombing the countryside, invited their companies to use citizens as borderline slave labour and gave them all of Cambodia's natural resources.

* NapoleonDelusion: Nol generally controls only Phnom Penh and a couple of larger cities, only briefly extending his rule to countryside during the moments his army rides out to "pacify" these areas. However, he dreams and talks of recreating the Khmer Empire, taking lands with a Khmer ethnic majority from South Vietnam and Thailand, not taking his weakness into account.

* CapitalismIsBad: Inverted. Rainsy supports free market reforms the most out of all potential leaders, and is (along with Sonando) the leader most concerned with human rights and freedoms.

* PoliticallyIncorrectHero: While halting government repression of minorities, in an attempt to muster public support, Rainsy can indulge in anti-Vietnamese rhetoric.

* ThisCannotBe: If Candlelight Party loses to the Beehive Party in the first post-war election, Rainsy is left shocked, unable to process his defeat and wondering what this means to Cambodian democracy. [[spoiler:Then subverted, as he receives a message from Sonando, who asks him to lead a new bipartisan Commission on Human Rights, cheering Rainsy up as he realises Cambodian democracy is safe in Sonando's hands.]]

* ChummyCommies: Sonando supports continued state ownership of major industries and collective farms, opposing Rainsy's privatisation plans, but unlike Lon Nol before him, Sonando does so to allow the workers greater rights and prevent exploitation rather than to increase the power of the government. Additionally, Sonando is (along with Rainsy) the only leader capable of establishing a genuinely liberal democratic Cambodia.

* FriendlyEnemy: If Sonando wins the election, he will establish a bipartisan Commission on Human Rights and appoint Sam Rainsy to head it, basically allowing the opposition to keep a check on his own government.

** On a deeper level, Sonando and Rainsy, despite leading the opposition parties, are on friendly terms with each other and prefer cooperation to electoral fighting, seeking to establish a consensual democracy, preventing factionalism to tear the country apart once again.

* EvilCripple: Sen is blind in one eye, having been wounded in it back when he was a Khmer Rouge guerrilla.

* PoliticallyCorrectVillain: Under his leadership, the KPRP has accepted many women into leadership, including to the post of Minister of Defence.

* AluminiumChristmasTrees: As weird as a pro-communist and pro-USSR monarchy may seem, this is precisely what happened with Norodom Sihanouk in real life. Sihanouk claimed to be a socialist and held openly pro-USSR views, even abdicating the throne at one point in order to be "closer to the people", albeit he remained in power as a civilian leader and a de facto dictator. He also joined forces with communist guerrillas after being deposed. The only difference is that with the split in pro-Vietnamese (pro-USSR by proxy) and pro-Chinese wings of the Khmer Rouge happened before the Khmer Rouge came into power, leading Sihanouk to abandon the Khmer Rouge in favour of the pro-Vietnamese FUNSK.

* AluminiumChristmasTrees: Despite sounding like a fictional pseudonym, [[spoiler:Pol Pot]] really did use many pseudonyms and code names, including one similar to Brother One, "First Brother", and [[spoiler:As noted under his full name, Pol Pot was actually a pseudonym. His real name was Saloth Sar]]. He also [[spoiler:really did believe in most of the stuff he believes in the mod, and gave up any veneer of being Communist when the Vietnamese invaded]].
