Added DiffLines:

* AbnormalAmmo: Unlike Anderson, Dredd makes full use of his [[SwissArmyGun Lawgiver's]] capabilities. He uses both the Hot-Shot and Incendiary rounds to literally burn perps alive, goes after a rogue Judge with high-explosive rounds, and even uses stun bullets on a few scared kids.
* AintTooProudToBeg: Subverted. [[spoiler:After running out of ammo and getting held at gunpoint by [[DirtyCop Lex]], Dredd holds up his hand and says, "Wait..." prompting Lex to go into a [[EvilGloating tirade]] about the "Great Judge Dredd" begging for his life. This ultimately turns out to be a plot for Lex to drop his guard, giving Anderson the opportunity to kill him.]]
* AntiHero: He enforces the law to the letter and without compromise. This includes locking up helpless homeless people for 'vagrancy' but he knows his priorities, and he shows a rare soft spot by harshly suggesting to the vagrant in question that he clear out before Dredd returns from his current mission.
* ArmorPiercingAttack: Subverted. He calls for armour piercing rounds at one point, only to find he's run dry of them.
* BadassBiker: His EstablishingCharacterMoment has him pursuing a van full of perps on his [[CoolBike Lawmaster]]. He skilfully weaves in and out of traffic, while his quarry runs over an innocent civilian. He then uses his bike's guns to disable the vehicle.
* BadassBoast: Delivers one while Anderson is captured and it's absolutely epic:
--> '''Dredd:''' In case you people have forgotten, this block operates under the same rules as the rest of the city. [[BigBad Ma-Ma]] is not the law. [[CharacterCatchphrase I am the law]]. Ma-Ma is a common criminal. Guilty of murder. Guilty of the manufacture and distribution of the narcotic known as Slo-Mo. And as of now, under sentence of death. Any who obstruct me in carrying out my duty will be treated as an accessory to her crimes. You have been warned. And as for you, Ma-Ma...Judgment time.
* BaritoneOfStrength: Has a deep, commanding voice that puts Christian Bale's Batman to shame.
* BerserkButton: As much of a KnightTemplar as he can be, threatening, hurting, or killing innocent bystanders is a good way to get on his bad side. You ''don't'' want to be on his bad side.
* BigBrotherMentor: If Anderson is any indication, he gives his rookie partners both the criticism and praise they need to bring out the best in them.
* ByTheBookCop:
** He doesn't use his bike's mounted machine guns on the perps he's chasing at the beginning of the film until they kill an innocent bystander.
** He also ''stuns'' the two kids who try to ambush him, when he could have easily killed them (his gun was set to live rounds, and he needed a half-second to change it).
** When Dredd and Anderson first arrive at the location to investigate a homicide, they come across a vagrant outside of the building. Dredd could have the vagrant arrested right then and there, but instead warns him to not be around when Dredd gets back, since Dredd and Anderson have bigger things to worry about at the moment. However, when Dredd comes back out with his suspect in handcuffs, the vagrant is still there, and Dredd [[IWarnedYou proves he wasn't bluffing]] by trying to arrest the vagrant.
* CallingYourAttacks: The Lawgiver is a voice-activated weapon. He does this with a stun grenade before throwing it at some {{Mooks}}, but this may be to give Anderson the heads up.
* CharacterDevelopment: In the beginning, Dredd tells Anderson he will specifically fail her for three things, losing her weapon (or having it taken from her), incorrect sentencing, or disobeying a direct order. [[spoiler:By the end, she's guilty of the first and arguably the second, but Dredd passes her anyways. Anderson has won his respect, and there is no clearer indication Dredd can give of this than by allowing her to be a judge.]]
* CharacterNarrator: He does a brief narration of the film's backstory at the beginning of the film, which is repeated at the end.
* CombatPragmatist: Not afraid to use gas, grenades and flashbangs to get the upper hand. When he gives the warning to a group of perps and they counter that Dredd has less time to comply, Dredd quips [[DeadpanSnarker "Thanks for the heads up"]], sets off a flashbang and slaughters them all.
* ControlFreak: Anderson describes him as such when she probes his mind.
* DeadpanSnarker: Very, very deadpan.
--> ''(right before they breach the door to a drug den)''
-->'''Anderson:''' The helmet interferes with my psychic abilities, sir.
-->'''Dredd:''' Think a bullet might interfere with them more.
* DeathGlare: He somehow manages to not only achieve this but make it his default mode without his eyes ever being visible.
* TheDeterminator: Fights pretty much an entire city block without so much as breaking a sweat. Even after getting shot, he patches himself up and gets back to it.
* TheDreaded: [[spoiler:The corrupt judges]] know exactly how dangerous he is and demand one million credits for killing him. Notably, this trope is downplayed compared to the comics, as Ma-Ma and all her gang have no idea of Dredd's reputation, whereas the entire city knows who he is in the comics.
-->[[spoiler:'''Corrupt Judge:''']] One million credits.
-->'''Ma-Ma:''' A million?
-->[[spoiler:'''Corrupt Judge:''']] You have a problem with a Judge. You know who he is?
-->'''Ma-Ma:''' No.
-->[[spoiler:'''Corrupt Judge:''']] I do. One million.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: Pursuing some perps in a high-speed chase while they shoot at him, only deciding to use lethal force after they run down a pedestrian, and informing control that backup is not necessary. He then tries to talk down the perp when he has a woman hostage, saying that if he surrenders, Dredd will make sure he gets off with life without parole. When he refuses, Dredd puts him down without blinking.
* EveryoneHasStandards: He enforces the law but he's not unreasonable and doesn't come down any harder on people than he has to. He gives the vagrant a chance to leave the area and when Anderson lets the Clan Techie go, Dredd agrees with her that he's a victim of Ma-Ma as well and putting him in jail won't help him or anyone else. He also doesn't use lethal force on Ma-Ma's underage soldiers, taking them out with stun rounds, and makes clear he won't execute perps unless he not only has no other choice but he is absolutely certain of their guilt.
* ExperiencedProtagonist: He's there to take Anderson out on a street assessment. There are various signs throughout the movie that he's SeenItAll, such as CuttingTheKnot during hostage situations.
* TheFaceless: Notably, he never removes his helmet, unlike Stallone's version. The one scene in which he doesn't wear it is when he's getting suited up for work, and thus hasn't put it ''on'' yet. Even then, the only time we see anything above his chest is when he puts the helmet on, and that's shown from the back to hide his face.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: Dredd only calls Anderson by her actual name three times in the entire film, instead opting to call her 'rookie' for most of it. [[spoiler:At the end, when Dredd tells Anderson her evaluation is now over, he calls her by her actual name, hinting that Dredd has decided to pass her.]]
* GoodIsNotNice: He's on the side of the law, but don't expect much in the way of compassion, emotion or even conversation if you get on his bad side.
* GoodIsNotSoft: Is quite hard on Anderson, and even harder on perps. [[CrapsackWorld Though, in]] [[WretchedHive Mega City One]], he can hardly be blamed and considers it all to be the deep end.
* TheGunslinger: When he is held up by a pair of juves, he manages a QuickDraw after he cons them with the NotWithTheSafetyOnYouWont trick. He's also [[ImprobableAimingSkills frighteningly]] accurate with his Lawgiver.
* HangingJudge: While he has to be one hundred percent certain that a perp is guilty to do so, he hands out two death sentences during the film; The first is to Zwirner via [[KillItWithFire a Hotshot round]] when he takes a hostage at gunpoint and earlier kills a pedestrian in his speeding van, the other being [[spoiler:Ma-Ma by [[KarmicDeath dosing her up on Slo-Mo and throwing her through a 200-storey window]], both for her earlier crimes of mass murder and drug manufacture and distribution, as well as to stop her using a DeadMansSwitch to blow up the Peach Trees complex]]. Any other kills he makes are in self defence.
* HiddenDepths: When Anderson probes him early in the film, she feels "something" beyond the "anger and control" we would normally associate with Dredd. It's never explained ''what'' it is, though fan theories abound.
** He expresses approval the couple times Anderson really shows her compassionate side. He seems to think this is a quality a strong judge can be built upon. He seems arguably to be the most genuinely impressed with her when she [[spoiler:lets the Clan Techie go because she argues he's just as much a victim of Ma-Ma as anyone, and that letting him go free '''IS''' justice.]]
* IAmTheTrope: He announces that "I am the law" over loudspeakers to Ma-Ma and her gang, all of which is done to serve as a warning that he's coming for her.
* ImplacableMan: Despite going through dozens of firefights [[spoiler:and almost being mulched by during a trio of Gatling guns wiping out a whole level of Peach Trees]], Dredd barely shows any sign of fatigue throughout the film. Even getting shot in the side doesn't stop him for very long.
* ImprobableAimingSkills: Damn near every shot he fires is a BoomHeadshot. And the ones that aren't are with incendiary rounds that burn up whatever he shoots at.
* ItWorksBetterWithBullets: Literally the only thing that slows him down is the fact that he's killed so many of Ma-Ma's {{Mook}}s that he runs out of ammo. [[spoiler:Anderson taking out [[DirtyCop Lex]] gives him a fresh supply of ammo.]]
* JerkassHasAPoint: He's harsh on Anderson at first, but you can't really blame him for not being enthusiastic about bringing a rookie who flunked out of the academy on a 'test run' (as his backup, no less) when we see at the very start of the film what an average day on the streets is like for Dredd.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: While he is pretty hard on everyone, he gives Anderson the pass she deserves, even being convinced (and possibly even impressed) when [[PetTheDog she let the Clan Techie go]].
* KnightTemplar: Surprisingly averted, mostly. He enforces the law unflinchingly, but prioritizes capital crimes and felonies over misdemeanors, and even gives some perps a chance to disappear or give up peacefully. Push him, though, and he's without mercy.
* KillItWithFire: Incendiary and Hotshot rounds. The former is basically a fire grenade, capable of lighting up lots of perps all at once. The latter is a heated shot meant for one target, which Dredd fires into some unlucky perp's mouth.
* LastNameBasis: His first name is never mentioned in the film. If you weren't familiar with source material, you might get the impression that his first name is 'Judge'.
* LawfulStupid: {{Averted|Trope}}. While Dredd still hold the law as sacrosanct as in the comics, he's pragmatic about how justice is served.
** When Dredd and Anderson find a homeless man resting by the entrance of the housing structure Ma-Ma is in, he notes that vagrancy is a crime, but their mission takes priority, and strongly advises the man to leave ''before'' they come back ([[SquashedFlat though ultimately the man doesn't live long enough for this to be a problem]]).
** He agrees with Anderson's assertion that [[spoiler:the Clan Techie is a ''victim'' rather than a criminal and allows her to let him go]].
** Despite Anderson being guilty of at least two criteria that Dredd held as immediate grounds for failing her test, [[spoiler:he passes her, as she showed devotion to the law even when she assumed that she had failed the test]].
* MeaningfulName: Judge Dredd is TheDreaded. [[spoiler:The corrupt judges]] Ma-ma brings in as backup know how dangerous Dredd is, and want one million credits just to even think about fighting him.
* NeverBareheaded: Justified. In keeping with the [[Comicbook/JudgeDredd source material]], we never see Dredd without his helmet on, save a shadowed silhouette when he first suits up for another day of duty. Dredd mentions it's a requirement for all judges, and with good reason: it makes it much harder for perps to shoot you in the head.
* NotSoStoic:
** While he's mostly a growling, frowny badass who isn't fazed by anything, he finally loses a little of his cool when he sees [[spoiler:Ma-Ma spinning up [[NoKillLikeOverKill three high-powered]] [[MoreDakka gatling guns.]]]]
---> '''Dredd''': Oh, ''[[PrecisionFStrike shit]]''.
** Whatever Anderson "saw" under the rage and control inside his head genuinely frightens her.
** He does get pretty pissed off after [[spoiler:Ma-Ma's massacre of innocent civilians while trying to kill him,]] with him going [[JackBauerInterrogationTechnique hell for leather on Kay]] shortly afterwards.
* OneManArmy: [[spoiler:The corrupt judges]] demand an abnormally high fee to go after him for a good reason. Over the course of the film, Dredd kills 48 criminals on-screen, four times any other character.
-->'''Command''': Do you require backup?\\
'''Judge Dredd''': No.
* OneWayVisor: As in the comics, his face can't be seen through his visor.
* PayEvilUntoEvil: What Dredd does to [[spoiler:Ma-Ma amounts to ColdBloodedTorture; shooting her in the stomach and dosing her up on Slow-Mo, so she can perceive herself falling to her death from two hundred stories up in a slow and agonizing manner. But considering she's a drug kingpin responsible for the callous torture and murder of so many innocent people by that point, how flippant she was about having the same done to Dredd and Anderson -- and in Anderson's case, [[RapeIsASpecialKindOfEvil probably raped beforehand]] -- and the fact that she had a few rival drug-dealers [[FlayingAlive skinned alive]] and personally [[EyeScream gouged the Clan Techie's eyes out with her thumbs]] before the events of the film, it's impossible to actually feel any measure of pity for her.]]
* PermaStubble: His unshaven look in the film is likely indicative of him working for long periods without rest. The film takes place overnight, contributing to this.
* PerpetualFrowner: Even though the upper area of his face is never, ever visible, he manages it.
* PetTheDog: It's subtle, but him giving the homeless man a chance to disappear before he and Anderson come back out is rather generous considering how he usually is about upholding the law.
* PragmaticHero: Attempt to threaten him, use hostages as leverage or even raise a gun against him, he will simply shoot you for your trouble.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: He definitely tries to be one despite his tendencies. He is there to ''enforce the law'', not kill people; it's just that enforcing the law most of the time ''means'' killing people. Most notably, he tries to avoid killing a hostage taker. Early in the movie, he doesn't fire on a van until they run over an innocent pedestrian. Later, when first arriving at Peach Trees, he has Anderson deliver a verdict to a vagrant, but prioritizes investigating the murders and warns the vagrant to be gone by the time he comes back.
-->''"Can't execute a perp on 99%."''
** [[AlternativeCharacterInterpretation Bear in mind]] that Dredd is also well aware that the Judges are ''massively'' overwhelmed by the sheer amount of criminality sweeping Megacity One on a daily basis. So one could argue it's not so much a matter of him being compassionate or understanding, so much as it is him prioritizing crimes that are felonies or seriously affect life and property. Given his adherence to the ideal of justice, he'd probably prosecute ''all'' crimes if he could, but he realizes that would probably result in several much ''larger'' crimes escaping his attention.
** He does allow for a bit of wiggle room, though. He [[spoiler:passes Anderson despite the fact that she lost her Lawgiver, which he told her earlier he would immediately fail her for and lets the Clan Techie go, even agreeing with her that he was a victim rather than a criminal. His first scene with a hostage taker also has him offer to get him a life sentence if he surrenders himself and tells Anderson "can't execute a perp on 99%", indicating that Dredd genuinely doesn't want to kill anyone unless he absolutely has to and even then, only when he's completely certain.]]
* ScarredEquipment: Even at the start of the film, Dredd's helmet has several prominent scratches and one of his shoulder pads has a noticeable dent in it, showing that he is an experienced street Judge. [[spoiler:Lex's armour piercing round adds a hole to his body armour later on.]]
* SeenItAll: At the end, this is all [[ButForMeItWasTuesday just another day for him]].
-->'''Chief Judge''': What happened here?
-->'''Dredd''': [[{{Understatement}} Drug bust. Perps were... uncooperative.]]
* ShootTheHostageTaker: [[StarterVillain Zwirner]] attempts to get off by taking a hostage. [[BoomHeadshot Dredd shoots him in the face]] [[KillItWithFire with a hotshot round]].
* SillyRabbitIdealismIsForKids: Averted. While he's definitely a cynic and is slightly incredulous at Anderson's idealism, when she explains her reasons he calls her attitude unironically admirable.
* SinkOrSwimMentor: To Anderson, and said word for word by the Chief Judge. He spends the movie quizzing Anderson on Judge-related knowledge, including procedures, sentencing, and tactical options, and also has Anderson run point for much of the movie, given that he's evaluating her. At the same time, however, whenever they breach, he's the first one through the door, since he's the more experienced Judge and he's also not an absolute stickler for rules, wanting Anderson to exercise her own judgement and even agreeing with her on letting the Clan Techie go as he was a victim of Ma-Ma too.
* StealthPun: Dredd tells [[spoiler:Ma-Ma 'defense noted']] right before he [[spoiler:''defenes''trates her.]]
* TheStoic: Gives his own abdominal wound a field dressing (using a quick clotting foam and sutures ''without anesthetic'') without so much as a whimper. And when he's shot prior to that, he simply slowly collapses without even a flinch in his facial expression.
* StuffBlowingUp: His Hi-Ex rounds frequently does this to any target he shot them with, such as a DirtyCop Judge who was part of the team Ma-Ma bribed and called in to take out Judge Dredd.
* SupportingProtagonist: The movie revolves around Anderson and her evaluation by Dredd. While she goes through CharacterDevelopment by TakingALevelInBadass, becoming a more capable judge in the process, [[SeenItAll this is just another day at work for Dredd.]]
* TallDarkAndSnarky: The only scene where his helmet is off in the opening shows he has black hair and he has a very dry, cynical sense of humor.
* TerseTalker: Only speaks when necessary and never says any more than he needs to in order to get his point across. In many cases, this is often with a single word. Much of this was Karl Urban's idea with him stripping back Dredd's lines, feeling that minimal conversation was in character.
* ToBeLawfulOrGood: Dredd largely chooses 'lawful.' [[spoiler:[[CharacterDevelopment Except at the end when he passes Anderson, disregarding his own assessment rules.]]]]
* TranquilFury: Never raises his voice above a low growl, but it's easy to see he's losing his temper when he attempts to interrogate Kay. Anderson specifically mentions that Dredd is nothing but this inside his head.
* UnflinchingWalk: Never moves above a methodical, advancing walk. Until Ma-Ma uses the Gatling.
* UnscrupulousHero: He's completely and utterly ruthless in enforcing the law, but he is genuinely devoted to upholding order. He unironically praises Anderson's idealism as "admirable", gets very angry when innocent lives are endangered, and does believe in innocence until guilt is proven.
* WouldHitAGirl: He has no problem with [[spoiler:throwing Ma-Ma out a window to her death]].
* WouldntHurtAChild: He uses stun rounds on a pair of juveniles though. It wasn't exactly pleasant for them, but it left them relatively unharmed and that's usually the best you can hope for if you aim a gun at Dredd.

** Okay, so your enemy has run low on ammo and there is no way for him to replenish it. What do you do? ZergRush him now that he can't shoot back with the 20 or so soldiers you still have left? Nope, just send three EliteMook with the same weapon as him after him, whom he proceeds to slaughter and steal ammo from, allowing him to become a formidable threat once again.

* EliteMooks: Though they don't fare as well as Rex, all of them except Kaplan manage to put up a much better fight against Dredd than Mama's goons. Most notably, Chan actually manages to overpower and almost choke Dredd to death, only to lose because he's lost his gun while Dredd still has his. Alvarez may not do much, but he does get Dredd to waste his last few normal rounds to panic-fire with his flanking maneuver. Kaplan is the only one killed unceremoniously because she tries to bluff a mind reader.
