When we finally meet him, it turns out that he gave the orb back to King Carnelian and used the reward to start his shop, with the express purpose of using his profits to help Erik. His bribing the guards in the castle to overlook Erik's cell is what allowed Erik to dig his tunnel out of there unnoticed.
