----
* AllPowerfulBystander: He consciously bears witness to the entire goings-on in the kingdoms connected to his Beacon Throne, but while his body is in its enchanted, hibernation state, he is unable to directly interact with anything or anyone. The "all-powerful" aspect of the trope is downplayed, in that, while he is the most powerful flora elemental drake (and manipulator of bending and suppressing laws and spells) in the entire series, he is not infallible.
* AntiquatedLinguistics: Dontriavien speaks with a loosely 'Gregorian-styled' speech--implemented to mark his ancientness and belonging to a by-gone age.

* DisappearsIntoLight: When he performs the Last Sacrifice his body disintegrates into particles of light, which are then absorbed into his Throne. A portion remains and tethers to Laeka’Draeon.
* DyingRace: His kind is thought by many to be long-ago extinct, but Dontriavien is one of four remaining (living) serpentine drakes. By the time his awakening takes place, he is actually one of only two remaining drakes, and, sadly, is fated to die in order to restore the flow of his Beacon Throne.
* EnergyDonation: Willingly gives up the manna of his physical body in order to revive his Beacon Throne, and imbue Laeka'Draeon with a suppression power that blocks the negative effects of his tainted blood.
* GiantFlyer: He is a serpentine drake--the largest flying creature in Valadae. According to WordOfGod, he is the third largest of the drakes.

* IDieFree: Implied that he found his induced slumber more like imprisonment--which was made exceedingly worse when his Throne was desecrated and the stone encasing his body became possessed by the spirits of those who--after stealing the Chanelling Stone--remained behind to booby-trap the entire Beacon Throne chamber. He welcomes his required sacrifice to aid Laeka'Draeon and reignite his Beacon Throne.

* PeoplePuppets: After the stone cacoon protecting his body from the elements became possessed, Dontriavien lost control of his body, which was manipulated against his will into attacking Laeka'Draeon and his friends.
* PowerFloats: He is a master elemental user, guardian of the Beacon Throne of Law and Magic, and he hovers in the air, his coils in a constant, slow motion, like a snake in water: "Dontriavien's beautiful coils rolled gently around the Beacon Throne, weightless as the air itself and sparkling with a sea-green and dew-drop glisten."
* PowerNullifier: Using his manipulative manna abilities, Dontriavien is able to temporarily suppress the effects of the blood curse in Laeka'Draeon. This (temporarily) ensures Laeka'Draeon will not slip into his SuperPoweredEvilSide.

* HorseOfADifferentColour: Like Moldav, Ametrine assists Laeka’Draeon's company by acting as a flying mount during the Eastern Beacon Throne mission, and also during the Manorphis Arc.

* RockThemeNaming: Is named after the blended quartz (of purple and yellow colouring), ametrine.

* AbnormalLimbRotatingRange: While walking ahead of Laeka'Draeon's group (leading them into Coron-Mias) Moldav twists his head around (like an owl) to give direct eye contact while speaking with them. It is implied he does this to appear imposing, and since he doesn't injure himself, it can be assumed it is an ability inherent in all hippogriffs.

An intelligent and strong-willed hippogriff, and high-ranked sentinel of Coron-Mias. Although initial perceptions label him as hardhearted, such a humourless and severe disposition does not disqualify him from caring; Moldav is completely dedicated to his calling in protecting all in his care (and even strangers) and the proof is seen in his actions in regards to aiding Laeka'Draeon and company.
----

* GiantFlyer: Hippogriffs are the second-largest of the ten ruling creature-kinds, and one of the largest winged creatures in Valadae. Moldav is a prime example of his species and is the largest of the hippogriffs that directly assist Laeka’Draeon in his quest.
* GoodIsNotNice: Is abrasive and cynical toward those he does not know. He is also rather arrogant—being a hippogriff sentinel of Coron-Mias, he likely sees most other creatures as beneath him and worthy of his respect only if they earn it in a significant way.
* GoodIsNotSoft: Moldav is a loyal and obedient guardian to his kin and realm, but woe to those who are on the receiving end of his wrath; he is a vicious and relentless fighter (as witnessed during the Second Gathering in Book 5).
* HorseOfADifferentColour: Assists Laeka’Draeon and company by acting as a flying mount to and from the Duintrai Fortress, to the City of Shadows (Duintrai), back to Coron-Mias, and then to the Risiden's north-west border.

* MrViceGuy: Is a noticeably arrogant and curt individual with fixed opinions and a rather cynical view of strangers. Still, Moldav is a loyal, trustworthy and valiant hippogriff.
* OurGryphonsAreDifferent: Is a hippogriff (a creature sharing avian and equine biological features), which—in Valadilian history—is one of the three allied creature-kinds known as the Three Winged Kings (which also included actual gryphons).
* ThePaladin: Is a strong and competent sentinel of Coron-Mias, dedicated to protecting innocents, and furthering the cause of peace and justice.

* RepeatingSoTheAudienceCanHear: Moldav translates Lord Throralvin's speech at the start of the forzaeder doen between Yarad and the Gaalainven. Justified, since all of Laeka'Draeon's company (excluding the hippogriffs) do not understand the manorphis' native language.

* OurDwarvesAreAllTheSame: Averted. While duards are the equivalent of a dwarven race within the Dragon Calling universe, they have plenty of unique differences, including more mole-like features (clawed feet and buttoned noses) and blueish skin and milky eyes. Also, while duards have a long history of technological advancement and strong mining industries, they are not greedy for precious minerals, nor are they battle-mongering. They are also not inclined to overindulgence (of food or alcohol) but they are definitely a proud and opinionated species. Dirk is a good example of a quiet-natured duard (most of his kind are more rowdy and outspoken).

Fellow archaeologist and long-time partner/ co-worker to Tappala, Dirk balances out her zealous energy with a calm and steady disposition. As a duard, he has extensive knowledge of his kind's grand and sombre history, which makes his presence in the Deep Ways all the more integral. It is thanks to his physical intervention that Laeka'Draeon's company is rescued from the coil slug assault. He, along with Tappala, offer their assistance further by helping the group navigate through the Deep Ways.
----
* AdventurerArchaeologist: Although more calmly tempered in his approach, Dirk is just as much the brave and willing adventurer as his lively companion, Tappala.

* BadassBeard: Dirk’s hair is described as being styled in “impressively looped knots and intertwining braids”; although that description doesn’t extend to his beard in the books, an illustration of him done by the author has his hefty sideburns twined and braided as well.
* TheBigGuy: Although not physically tall, he is most certainly physically strong, and does most of the heavy-lifting and laborious duties of Tappala's archeology team.
* DarkSkinnedRedhead: His skin is described as being a bluish-grey colour, and he has “sunset-orange” head and arm hair.
* DropTheHammer: He owns a large hammer with a longer-than-average handle and wields it against the coil slugs; not to injure them, but to send vibrations through their shells and stun them.

* Foil: Dirk is this to Tappala, being the mellow, down-to-earth one of the pair--contrasting her hyper-active, eccentric tendencies.
* HugeGuyTinyGirl: Dirk is broad-shouldered enough (and Tappala small enough) to have his friend ride on his shoulders.

* MayflyDecemberFriendship: With the wescat, Tappala, who's lifespan is significantly shorter (wescats average 40 years) than his (around 430 years).
* MightyGlacier: A part of Dirk's physical description in Chapter 27 of The Sword of Stars heavily implies this: "Though only a couple of inches taller than Norf, the stranger's brawny physique gave the impression of immense physical strength". Also, duards in general are known for their brawn, not their speed.

* OppositesAttract: Dirk could not be more different than Tappala, and yet they are life-long friends whose one shared passion (archeology) has bonded them in a unique and special way.
* TheQuietOne: Impressions gear him toward this disposition, although with Tappala as a constant companion, it's no wonder he rarely talks--likely he's used to not being able to get a word in before she starts chattering off.

Faithful attendants and personal guardians to Belzor Ven'Ho, the brother and sister duo lead a life of humble servitude and are found to nearly always be by their master's side. Although they live a duty-bound, unassuming life, Doriel and Laurana Whetherest are dedicated and trustworthy, not to mention formidable magic-wielders, willing and ready to do whatever it takes to protect their charge.
----

* BattleButler: As Belzor's Soul Guards (loyalist servants), Doriel and Laurana are responsible for assisting in the care of his mental and physical health. As such, they are required to help defend him or obey his orders to protect others. They are highly capable strategists and users of Light magic.
* BeautifulSingingVoice: Although she has lost her physical voice, Laurana can still communicate through Telepathy Soul Talk, and that also includes singing. Her voice is described as a light and airy--presumably soprano--which Ferule makes a compliment on.
* BrotherSisterTeam: They pursued the same calling to become Belzor's Soul Guards, and work alongside each other in their duties to care for and protect their master.

* TheChampion: Both are completely dedicated to Belzor, body and soul, in accordance with their chosen calling as his Soul Guards.
* ChildHoodFriends: Doriel and Laurana were assigned to Belzor from the time of his inauguration as the Misht'thurelin (which took place when he was only 12 years old). They are not significantly older than he, and so would have grown up alongside him whilst undergoing their Soul Guard training. And although they probably would not consider their relationship with Belzor on the heart-to-heart level of a normal friendship, there is no doubt the three have established a unique and intimate bond.

* ElementalPowers: Both siblings trained in the arts of manna manipulation in order to use Light magic.
* EnergyDonation: Doriel and Laurana transfer portions of their manna into Belzor to amplify his Light magic, as well as recharge his energy when he’s expended too much.

* FreudianTrio: This dynamic can be glimpsed between the Whetherest siblings and their master, Belzor, but merely on a surface level, as Doriel and Laurana are only minor support characters in the series.

* HatesSmallTalk: Doriel does not appear interested in casual conversations, and is perfectly fine expressing his displeasure to flippant or foolish talk.

* TheMcCoy: Laurana is far more emotional and compassionate than her logical brother.
* MysticalWhiteHair: Due to their extensive training to become wielders of WhiteMagic and Light magic, the natural colouring of the siblings' fur and hair was stripped--turning white.

* NoSenseOfHumor: Doriel fits squarely in this trope, often seen scowling at or scolding the Sheddlys for their flippant behaviour.

* PowerAtAPrice: In order to become Soul Guards to Protectorate Belzor Ven'Ho, both brother and sister underwent vigorous and stringent training in order to become magic-wielders. The costs were the natural pigmentation of their bodies, as well as their voices.
* Protectorate: As Soul Guards to Belzor, the siblings are responsible for protecting him, both physically and mentally, offering wholeheartedly their time, wisdom, insight, skills and talents.
* TheQuietOne: Neither one are particularly talkative, the reasons likely being their physical muteness as well as their positions as Soul Guards (whose duty lies in caregiving and protection, not eliciting conversations).
* TheSpeechless: Subverted in that, while both are physically mute, they can still communicate through Telepathy Soul Talk.
* TheSpock: Doriel could be seen as this, in the dynamic between Belzor, Laurana and himself.

* UndyingLoyalty: To Belzor. There's no questioning their motives--Doriel and Laurana are utterly dedicated to him in every way; that is the core defining quality of a Soul Guard.
