If he takes damage, he'll protest that she's hurting him and try to jog her memory. ** Maxwell was a failing stage magician who turned to dark magic to boost his own popularity, regardless of the consequences. His reckless dabbling with it got both him and his stage assistant, Charlie, stuck in another world and unable to return home. What's more, Charlie had turned into the Night Monster, viciously attacking Maxwell in the dark despite his pleas for her to remember him. By the "A New Reign" update, Charlie had taken the Nightmare Throne and become a host for [[EldritchAbomination "Them"]], becoming a threat far dangerous than Maxwell himself would ever be.
** Maxwell was also responsible for getting many of the player characters trapped in the same world he was whisked away to, whether through [[DealWithTheDevil Faustian deals]] or straight-up kidnapping them -- presumably so they could help free him from the Nightmare Throne. He eventually does get his wish, but with Charlie having seized the Nightmare Throne, Maxwell is now forced to work with the very people he tormented in order to stop her, some who understandably hate his guts like Wilson. In the base game, the player can choose to turn on the phonograph after initially turning it off so he'll have to keep listening to the same ragtime song again, prompting this response: "I suppose I deserved that."

* PlayingWithFire: While Willow was always hinted to have some form of control over flames (she's unharmed by them and could even start them at random), the addition of her skill tree casts away any doubts about it and allows her to graduate to a full blown pyromancer. She can make it so that her flames no longer spread, burn longer and deal more damage. Hungry Tinder lets her absorb flames from objects into her lighter and keep them from burning. Her Ember Tender skill is where things start to go crazy, as it unlocks the Embers she needs to start casting her spells, which includes the ability to set enemies on fire, either a single target or in a radius around her; boost her damage against burning enemies, and even create Dwarf Stars. Finally, her affinity skills allow her to either fire out 5 homing shadow flames to strike at enemies if you spec into the shadow side, or a literal flamethrower of blue fire if you spec into the lunar side.

If he chooses, he can shave it off, removing the increased risk of overheating, restoring sanity, and acquiring the resulting beard hair to use as a component in the construction of a Meat Effigy, a meat-filled wooden sculpture of himself, that resurrects him into a new body when he dies.
