She's also noted to be able to pilot Villkiss skillfully and for awhile, also solos dragon squadrons while dodging UnfriendlyFire from teammates who want to kill her for inadvertently killing two recruits and Zola. It also means that she hoards all of the kills, causing others to go into PerpetualPoverty as their income is based on the number and type of dragons the person kills. And as revealed in "Resonating Front Lines", she is also skilled in different types of sports and capable of driving a ''professional race car''.

She gets Mutiny" result in her uniform getting damaged by Ange, is beaten up while by another Norma in the canteen, uses the restroom has a PottyEmergency when Ange puts makes her swallow laxative back in her mouth, spiked water, and Ersha beats beating the crap out of her and Chris.Chris in the shower.

!! Zola !!Zola Axberg

* HateSink: Zola Axberg is one of the captains for the First Allies but turns out to be a horrible SerialRapist of the highest order. She first appears molesting Hilda by groping her, commenting that Ange will be her prey. Later in the episode, she [[AttemptedRape attempts to rape Ange]], slapping out her eyeball. Later in the story, several characters state that [[QuestionableConsent they were pretending to be in love with her]] so they can escape Arzenal. When one of the [=DRAGONs=] eats her, [[AssholeVictim no one mourns for her]].

!!Angelise "Ange" Ikaruga Misurugi
->'''Voiced by''': Creator/NanaMizuki (Japanese), Creator/EmilyNeves (English)
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cross_ange_ep_03_ange_determined_to_survive_5883.jpg]]
->''"My name is Ange. I will survive. Kill and survive."''

The main protagonist of the series. A former princess of the Misurugi Empire, she was sent to Arzenal after finding out that she was a Norma on the day she was to participate in the politics of the empire on her sixteenth birthday. Pilot of the AW-[=CBX007=] Villkiss although her first deployment had her piloting a stock AW-[=CBR115=] Glaive that was more of a machine for new recruits.
----
* TheAce: Ange was supposed to inherit the empire instead of her older brother, showed to be "above average in all areas" in training and is also noted to be one of the [[AcePilot best pilots of Arzenal]], as her performance at Arzenal show.
* AdrenalineMakeover: After the events of "Villkiss Awakens". It's quite hard to believe that the Angelise of "The Fallen Imperial Princess" and the Ange of later episodes are the same person.
* AdultFear: After hearing Sylvia screaming on the other side of the line, Ange has a minor HeroicBSOD and spends a lot of time worrying about her during the Festa.
* AggressiveNegotiations: And not of the passive-aggressive sort, but rather of the "Do as I say, or I'll kill you here and now!" way.
* AgitatedItemStomping: In "Ange Loss", when she finds the bra Hilda used to sabotage Villkiss that resulted in her stranding on the island.
* AlmightyJanitor: She's just a member of Salia's squad. She still kills more dragons than anyone else (though she also indulges in a lot of kill stealing).
* AlmostKiss: She tries to kiss Tusk, but the flying helicopters [[spoiler:getting themselves in a friendly fire thanks to the DRAGON Ange had to tussle with in a malfunctioning Villkiss in the previous episode, influencing them.]]
* AntiHero: Ange starts out as a ClassicalAntihero before becoming a PragmaticHero. She has enormous trust issues from the lies and attempts on her life and what she has needed to do since being sent to Arzenal. Slides back up towards KnightInSourArmor after forging an alliance the dragons. She knows that doing the right thing is fraught with uncertainty, but persists. She never becomes too merciful or idealistic though: she tears the Misurugi Empire residents a new one for demanding her protection by force, and later decides that the chaos in the former Mana World is not her problem and they can adapt or die.
* ArmorPiercingSlap:
** She slaps Zola during the latter's AttemptedRape on her, but it doesn't work.
** Ange slaps Tusk to wake him up in "Goodbye From the Gallows".
** She also slaps towards Jill in "Distorted World". That and her RousingSpeech enables Jill to come back and pilot Ersha's Ragna-mail.
* ArsonMurderAndJaywalking: She's ready to ditch Hilda out of the blue for [[BananaInTheTailpipe sabotaging Villkiss]] in "Lonely Mutiny", constantly harassing her with her friends, and because Perolina smelled awful. [[NotMeThisTime Hilda knew nothing about that last one.]]
* AsskickingEqualsAuthority: By the time Hilda transfers command to Ange towards the end of the series, Ange is a very capable fighter.
* AttemptedRape: She's a victim of this twice, thanks to Zola [[spoiler:and Embryo]]. Fortunately for her, both attempts get interrupted.
* AwfulTruth: One that is kept from kept from almost everyone, [[LockedOutOfTheLoop herself included]]: she's part of the race she's been brought up to believe is less than human, and as a result, is sent to a PenalColony to be used as CannonFodder against interdimensional dragons.
* BackToBackBadasses: With Momoka in episodes 9 and 10.
* BadassNormal: She raided an army who can use magic with nothing but fighting skill and guns. She won.
* BattleCouple: With Tusk in the finale. [[spoiler:The both of them dealing the killing blows to Embryo's main body and the Hysterica, respectively.]]
* BeautyIsNeverTarnished: All the scars she got from Sylvia whipping her? Gone by the next episode.
* BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor: On the night before her Baptism, Angelise wishes for a challenge. Guess she got more than she bargained for.
* BerserkerRage: She has gone into one on two occasions when killing dragons.
* {{BFG}}: During the failed invasion of Misurugi to rescue Aura, Villkiss's assault rifle runs out of ammo and Salamandinay gives Ange Enryugo's beam canon which serves as Villkiss's primary weapon for the rest of the series.
* {{BFS}}: Red Assault Mode Villkiss gives the sword a huge beam of light that is long enough to cleave ships with just one swing.
* BiTheWay: DoubleSubverted. She's initially shipped in the show with Tusk and resists any attempts by the other Norma women to seduce her. [[spoiler:However, after consummating her romance with Tusk, she kisses Hilda and suggests she'd be open to a relationship with her as well. To drive the point home, in the montage of important characters and moments played in the finale' credits, both instances were highlighted.]]
* BigDamnHeroes: During the gravity DRAGON incident, she was the last to arrive and managed to save the First Troop from doom. Although it still involved Salia ordering her to follow her orders else she's dead. [[spoiler:Also does this later when the dragons attack Arzenal, and helps Sala stop the dimensional fusion from Embryo in "Resonating Front Lines".]]
* TheBigDamnKiss: With Tusk in, appropriately enough, "Ange and Tusk", where they pick up from their earlier AlmostKiss after Tusk confesses his feelings for her. They likely would have gone all the way if [[spoiler:they weren't {{interrupted|Intimacy}} by Salamandinay's soldiers]].
** She also has one with [[spoiler:Hilda in "Distorted World". After Hilda confesses her feelings to Ange, she starts angsting about Ange being in a relationship with Tusk and how both of them being women [[{{Gayngst}} makes it weird]], and Ange reassures her by pushing her against the wall and kissing her.]]
* BigSisterInstinct: Will do anything to protect her little sister Sylvia. [[spoiler:It ends up biting her in the ass.]]
* BladeLock: She engages with this a few times with the Enryugo in "Dragon Song".
* BlasphemousBoast: In "Distorted World", during her RousingSpeech, she says "We can beat anybody, even ''God''."
* BleedEmAndWeep: Breaks down moments after her first DRAGON kill.
* BottomlessMagazines: Even after Salia uses up a lot of bullets while she was piloting Villkiss, Ange is never seen to reload the weapon and still had quite a bit when she engaged Sala. Subverted in "Dark Angel of Destruction" where she did run out of bullets, forcing Sala to toss her beam rifle to Ange.
* BreakingTheFourthWall: She often does this in the Next Episode previews.
* BreakTheCutie: While telling that mother of the Norma baby that she should have another child was cruel, what happened afterwards was a bit much. Her only sins were her ignorance of such things and her pride, natural byproducts of her upbringing. With [[TraumaCongaLine the swift and abrupt escalation with little explanation or demonstration]] it's little wonder she was stuck in such a state of denial throughout the first couple episodes, leading to the deaths of three of her comrades.
* BrickJoke: In the beginning of ''Dragon Song'', after finding out that both her and Hilda have been in the cell for a week, Ange wishes she could just get some water to refresh herself. When she finally gets a hold of Villkiss, Ange had to make it run in the water to start it up. She acknowledges that getting some water on her skin was refreshing.
* BrokenBird: The first ten episodes alone caused her to become incredibly cold and distant, having been lied to, used, or betrayed by nearly everyone.
* BrokenPedestal: A sympathetic example. Everybody turns on her after she is outed as a norma, including [[FairWeatherFriend her Iaria teammates]], out of pure prejudice. One could say the mana-using society is now one for her as a result of her public lynching.
%%* BroodingBoyGentleGirl: Inverted. As she is the brooding to Tusk's gentle.
* BrutalHonesty: While she won't win too many points for congeniality, you can count on her to keep it real.
* BystanderSyndrome: Completely justified in her case. When she is approached by the now mana-less band of citizens in "Distorted World" demanding for help, being a princess, she refuses to oblige, fully remembering how they treated her following her outing as a norma. Their audacious response? They accuse her of the mana disappearing, and one prepares to kill her, only for her to score a BoomHeadshot on him first, [[ScrewThisImOuttaHere scaring the rest away]]. Finally, she scares Sylvia into walking on her own feet before leaving.
* CainAndAbel: The Abel to Julio's Cain.
* TheCaptain: [[spoiler:Hilda relinquishes command to Ange during the final episodes of ''Cross Ange''.]]
* CaptainCrash: She might be one of the best pilots of the show, but she's crashed Vilkiss a lot of times.
* CaptainObvious: Though it's more about her being a smartass towards the situation.
* CartwrightCurse: Zig-zagged a bit. Her mother died protecting her in "The Fallen Imperial Princess". Then in her disastrous first deployment, she got her captain and two of her comrades killed. On at least a couple occasions since, her teammates joked that anyone who gets close to her dies. Defied afterwards so far in that there have been no subsequent casualties with her around; she saw to it. She constantly lampshades this trope in the previews.
* CharacterDevelopment: Went from shell-shocked and sheltered princess to hardened and emotionally distant prison colony resident with a desire to destroy the world that discarded her shockingly fast.
* CharacterWitness: Has one in Momoka, who has been devoted to her ever since she treated one of her wounds when they were children.
* ChekhovsGun: [[spoiler:That passionate kiss with Tusk? Turns out to be very important for Ange to break free against Embryo's brainwashing.]]
%%* ChildhoodFriends: With Momoka.
* TheChosenOne: Villkiss chose her over Jill and Salia, much to the latter's frustration.
* CloseCallHaircut: During the finale of "Conclusive Ocean", from dodging a charging hook from Jill's [[ArtificialLimbs metal right arm]].
* ColorCodedForYourConvenience: As revealed in "Arzenal Burns", Michael-Mode Villkiss is an offensive based Villkiss that changes the dominant color to red, while Ariel-Mode Villkiss, which turns blue, can teleport just like a [[Anime/MartianSuccessorNadesico Boson Jump]].
* CombatPragmatist: Ange does not fight fair and will use any tools necessary to win. Then again, considering [[CrapsackWorld the rest of the world won't play fair either]], it's out of necessity.
* ConflictingLoyalty: By "Conclusive Ocean", she has to choose between following Jill and her plans to avenge Embryo, or side with the DRAGON race to free the Norma. Upon realizing how far Jill is willing to go to avenge Embryo, she decides to help the [=DRAGONs=] unite with the Norma on the Aurora and kill him.
* ContraltoOfDanger: Courtesy of both Creator/NanaMizuki in Japanese and Creator/EmilyNeves in English.
* CoolBigSis: She was a kind-hearted sister toward Sylvia [[spoiler:until the latter turned on her]]. Later, not only does Ange comfort Vivian when she finds out she's a DRAGON, but seeing as she was initially more friendly to Ange than any other Norma, she also expresses delight when Vivian is reunited with her mother.
* CosmicPlaything: Considering how nonchalantly Embryo, her siblings, Jill and the DRAGON race (with the exception of [[PetTheDog Sala]]) play around with her fate, it's rather surprising that she still has some sort of self-worth (or perhaps it is ''because'' of all this).
* CrazyEnoughToWork: When she hears Sala singing, instead of Ange just running away to dodge the attack, she ''sings'' the song "El Ragna" despite the fact that there should be no reason to. In fact, she had no idea singing it would [[spoiler:unlock Villkiss's GoldenSuperMode]] with the exception that both songs have similar lyrics.
* CrucifiedHeroShot: The fixed second opening has Ange in this pose, along with BoundAndGagged.
* CurbStompBattle:
** During her first battle with the [=DRAGONs=], she kills most of them by herself.
** In "Arzenal Burns", she curb-stomps Salia and destroys Julio's fleet.
** Towards the end of "Conclusive Ocean", she kicks Jill down before fleeing to meet up with Sala.
** During the final episodes of ''Cross Ange'', she obliterates [[spoiler:Embryo's fleet]] and eventually [[spoiler:destroys Hysterica]] in the GrandFinale.
* DangerousDeserter: Right before combat, Ange attempts to flee back to the Empire with her paramail and Salia threatens to execute her if she doesn't turn around. She ends up getting Zola and her comrades killed because of her attempted desertion.
* DangerouslyShortSkirt: And the one time where it was "dangerously short", it was [[ClothingDamage already beyond repair]].
* DangerousSixteenthBirthday: On the day where she was supposed to participate in the politics in the Misurugi empire, she finds out that she's a Norma all along.
* DeadpanSnarker: A third of the comedy is from her snarking at somebody or at the situation.
* DeathGlare: She gave these to her would-be executioners who are very terrified of her despite being handcuffed. She also gives one to Julio when she was ready to kill him.
* DefectorFromDecadence: Not at first, and she had already been disinherited, but when she has the chance to re-integrate, twice, the first being when her brother makes a sheepish plea bargain, she has already seen the evils of her former society, and refuses it.
* DefiantCaptive: To Embryo, to the point where she breaks his mind control. [[spoiler:Played more straight in "God's Soul-Searching" where Ange manages to break out of her MindRape, telling Embryo to suck it. Embryo just responds with, well more brainwashing.]]
* DefiantToTheEnd:
** She becomes defiant to the point she sings her mother's song after spotting the ring in Julio's possession and is about to be executed in "Goodbye From the Gallows".
** In the second half of "Conclusive Ocean", when Jill threatens Ange to follow her latest plan to kill Embryo and sacrifice the dragons or Momoka dies, Ange spits at her and bolts after defeating her.
** Embryo's behavior ''really'' got Ange under her skin from the get-go to the point that she resists his brainwashing attempts. By the conclusion of "Beyond Time", [[spoiler:she gives him a well-deserved KarmicDeath]].
* DefrostingIceQueen: Ange has come to fully appreciate her friends at Arzenal, who she once looked down on for being Norma, for accepting her in spite of being a Norma by contrast to her former friends. Momoka and Misty were the only two who didn't turn on her.
* {{Determinator}}: Being ''sick'' will not prevent her from piloting Villkiss and try to rescue her team. Death threats will make her DefiantToTheEnd to the point where [[spoiler:Embryo has finally had enough of her getting in his way]].
* DeusAngstMachina: She puts up with a lot of crap, and the number of people who have never wanted her dead can be counted on a single hand. Suffice it to say her rage is well earned.
* DidYouJustFlipOffCthulhu: She evidently doesn't give a damn over whether not [[spoiler:Embryo]] knows about love and how he can control her. Ange kills him anyway.
* DispenseWithThePleasantries: No Misty, Ange doesn't want to hear all that small talk praising that you are doing.
* TheDogBitesBack: Several instances occur throughout the series.
** After being exposed by Julio as a norma, later nearly getting executed by him and being the target along with the rest of Arzenal for capture or extermination, Ange has finally had enough and decimates his fleet, threatens him to stop the massacre right away, and is still a moment away from killing him out of disgust before Embryo intervenes and does the deed himself.
** Also, in a more minor example, she gives Hilda what for during the earlier escape from Arzenal for her attempts to kill her earlier by sabotaging Villkiss and unfriendly fire, nearly ditching her as payback, until Hilda catches up and explains she did everything to survive long enough to escape and reunite with her mother.
** Jill not only giving her a harsh rectal examination, but also lying to her on multiple counts, continuously trying to use her, beating her at least a couple times, and threatening to throw her maid and best friend out of the airlock if she doesn't follow her latest unsound plan? Ange finally gives her a much deserved KO during the finale of "Conclusive Ocean".
** Towards the end of "Distorted World", after Sylvia blames Ange for her being in an incapacitated state, Ange [[spoiler:violently forces Sylvia to walk since her injuries were completely healed]].
* DressHitsFloor: [[spoiler:Was forced to strip naked while under Embryo's mind control.]]
* DrivenToSuicide: After witnessing the dragons, this is what her mindset is until she finally starts fearing for her life when the dragon almost kills her. [[spoiler:And does it again in "Necessary" when she sees that the gun on Salia's uniform has bullets and points it to her head, about to pull the trigger when she's stopped by Tusk's words in their final meeting.]]
* EtTuBrute: She was shocked when [[spoiler:her beloved little sister]] turned against her and tried to stab her with a dagger.
* EvenTheGirlsWantHer: She attracts blushing worship from her teammates in "The Fallen Imperial Princess", then Coco in the third...and Zola's less-than-welcome attentions. Suffice to say that everyone wants her.
* EveryoneHasStandards: Ange draws the line with Jill's orders to the point that she refuses to sacrifice the dragons in Jill's plot in "Conclusive Ocean".
* ExplainExplainOhCrap: When Sala asks her where did Ange think {{Mana}} came from, Ange starts explaining till she has a sudden revelation that Mana [[spoiler:came from Aura]].
* FallenPrincess: She's the former princess of the Misurugi Empire at the start of the anime, to which "The Fallen Imperial Princess" mentions this trope.
* FantasticRacism: She starts out discriminating against Norma like everyone else.
* FirstKiss: She shares her first kiss with Zola and she's not happy about that one.
* FireForgedFriends: With Hilda when they escape in "Bikini Escape" and then with Salamandinay after they work together to save the DRAGON capital from Embryo's dimensional merge test.
* ForcefulKiss: Was on the receive end from Zola, and gave one to Rosalie. However, this is because she's forcefully feeding the spiked laxative water that Rosalie switched out to her water bottle.
* FreudianThreat: Tusk accidentally stumbling on her into sexually suggestive positions became such a RunningGag that, by the time [[spoiler:they come back from Earth]], she makes overt threats to his manhood. Like chomping on a penis-shaped mushroom at the top of a meat stick.
* FromDressToDressing: Back in the day, she bandaged Momoka's bleeding arm by ripping off her dress.
* FullNameUltimatum: She calls out Jill by her real name after denouncing how wrong her methods are in "Conclusive Ocean".
* GetAHoldOfYourselfWoman:
** She tells Salamandinay to get a grip because she's the leader of the army when the latter doubts what to do in a frantic situation.
** She later gives one to Jill of all people to get her to stop dwelling and face her responsibilities in "[[Recap/CrossAngeEp23DistortedWorld Distorted World]]".
* TheGoldenRule: A firm believer in this. Treat her badly, and she will inflict her wrath, or in the case of the [[DirtyCoward masses in the finale of "Distorted World"]], leave you to your fate.
* GoldenSuperMode: While it has been shown in the opening, [[spoiler:''Dragon Song'' marks the first time Ange uses it and the trigger is singing her mother's song.]]
* GoodIsNotNice: She does soften up, but she still would prefer to be distant from others.
* GoodIsNotSoft: Jill accuses her of going soft when she refuses to follow her vicious methods in "Conclusive Ocean". Ange proves her dead wrong with a knockout.
* GoodPeopleHaveGoodSex: [[spoiler:After finding out Tusk is alive in the finale of "Necessary", she and Tusk have sex for three days before the final episodes of ''Cross Ange''.]]
* GreatEscape: Improvised in "Bikini Escape" in response to Sylvia's distress call.
* HadToComeToPrisonToBeACrook: Before prison: well-composed, dignified princess. After: asocial, pragmatic, willing and needing to do anything to survive. Just ask Misty.
* HairAntennae: She has really short ones though.
* HaveYouComeToGloat: She asks Misty this question when the latter visits Arzenal.
* TheHero: She's one of the good guys and is the main protagonist of the series.
* HeroWithBadPublicity: Looks as if Julio had set her up as public enemy number one to run unopposed as emperor.
* HeroesPreferSwords: A subverted example. Her Villkiss is equipped with one, but being an anti-hero Ange hardly uses it aside from her first DRAGON kill and in the opening. [[spoiler:She does start using it when she fights Sala.]]
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: She may be brutally honest, but she won't spare herself, acknowledging [[TheseHandsHaveKilled the blood on her hands]] or her own self-contradictions.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: With Momoka.
* HiddenWeapons: [[spoiler:Kills Embryo with two knives from underneath her dress. Too bad DeathIsCheap for Embryo.]]
* HowTheMightyHaveFallen: She was the Princesss of Misurugi and considered royalty to her people. Now, she's a norma sent to Arzenal to fight the [=DRAGONs=], at least until the second half of the series.
* HumansAreTheRealMonsters: If you go by the mana-users are the only true humans common belief, then sure, this is what Ange arrives at by "Goodbye From the Gallows".
* HumblePie: Forced to come to terms with being a Norma in the first few episodes. Unlike other examples of the trope, it also coincides with her hardening as a character due to the circumstances.
* IDidWhatIHadToDo: She's willing to bend or break the rules in order to help free the Norma.
* IHatePastMe: She admits her disgust with her former self in "Goodbye From the Gallows".
* IllKillYou: She threatens Salia to get out of her way during the second half of "Arzenal Burns" before she heads off to take on the mana fleet.
* IKnowMaddenKombat: Her first time experiencing a Para-mail makes her think she's playing Iaria, a lacrosse game, only with hover boards instead.
* ILied:
** She said this to Hilda after agreeing to team up with her to escape Arzenal, before ordering Momoka to slam the cargo door and leave her behind as payback for the earlier attempts on her life. Only Momoka flaking on that order, and Hilda revealing her reason for wanting to escape, convinced her to change her mind.
** While she didn't say it, she clearly lied to Julio that she wouldn't kill him if he called off the massacre that was happening at Arzenal. (It would have worked for the best anyhow; Julio secretly intended to continue the massacre later on.) The only thing that stopped her from dealing the fatal blow was Embryo.
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: Her first DRAGON kill.
* ImportantHaircut: At the end of "Villkiss Awakens" where she accepts her fate as a Norma.
* IncorruptiblePurePureness: As [[spoiler:Embryo]] found out the hard way, [[spoiler:a MindRape isn't enough to stop her RebelliousSpirit]].
* IndyPloy: Ange never plans for anything she does while in the middle of a battle. It still works in her favor regardless.
* TheIngenue: Zig-zagged. She is quite talented and capable of leadership, but for obvious reasons, naive to the workings of Arzenal. (She is at least curious about the Norma gene issue in "The Fallen Imperial Princess", which seems quite prescient given that most mana users lack free thought.) She does a 180 in the first few episodes alone.
* InnocentBigot: At the beginning of the series. She may be prejudiced towards the norma, but sees it as a genetic issue that she wishes to investigate once she is baptized, and her view is no different from everyone else in the World of Mana, including Misty.
* IntergenerationalFriendship: [[Anime/MashinHeroWataruSeries Wataru]] ends up striking a meaningful friendship with Ange in ''VideoGame/SuperRobotWarsX''. He even becomes Ange's MoralityPet. Ange says more than once that she just can't say no to him. Ange's interactions with Wataru play a role in making her character more benevolent and reasonable. [[spoiler:So much that when she finds Sylvia walking on her own, she offers her a hand to restore order to Misurugi and establish Cafe Ange in her old home]].
* InterruptedIntimacy: With Tusk, only for [[spoiler:Sala's members to crash into the building revealing that they were responding to their distress call.]]
* ItIsBeyondSaving: She does a fairly swift 180 from the beginning of the series by "Goodbye From the Gallows". After realizing she had been betrayed by her brother Julio and the mindless hate of the masses towards Norma including herself, all the while she's forced to fight to serve them, she wishes to see the World of Mana destroyed.
* ItsPersonal: Her deal with Julio when in "Goodbye From the Gallows" she realizes he was responsible for everything that happened to her and her parents. Later escalates with the massacre at Arzenal to the point where she comes to finish him.
* IWorkAlone: This is her attitude when Salia calls her out in "Salia's Gloom". According to Mei, she thinks that [[spoiler:Ange's trying to not let anyone get killed after her first deployment ended poorly.]]
* JackOfAllStats: Ange is claimed to be above average in all areas, and proves to be quite well rounded indeed. While Salia, for instance, may be a better long distance shot, Ange easily curb stomps her in "The Tuner of Time" hand to hand. In a ''dress''.
* JadeColoredGlasses: Despite her cynicism from mid-series onward, she still has people she values and wishes to settle down peacefully once Libertas is successful.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: She's cold and aloof, but she will protect anyone when the chips are down.
* {{Keigo}}: Initially, she spoke formally, she drops it when she decided to abandon her original name.
* KickTheSonOfABitch: She humiliates the former Mana-using citizens in "Distorted World", who retain their FantasticRacism and [[DirtyCoward make underhanded demands her unconditional protection]] in the face of impending doom, and to a lesser degree, she violently forces [[HeadInTheSandManagement her immature sister Sylvia]] to grow up quickly.
* KickingAssInAllHerFinery: Wearing her old dress in "The Tuner of Time" doesn't keep her from kicking ass.
* KillSteal: She's very notable in doing this as shown in "Lonely Mutiny" when Hilda goes for the kill, Ange steals it right from her.
* LaserGuidedKarma:
** After telling a mother that she should just give birth to another child because said child was a Norma, karma tells her on the next day on her big event that she's a Norma. She then gets a taste of the humiliation and persecution that is forced on the Norma. The same that she would have done to them if her big secret hadn't been publicly revealed.
** Her past kindness to Momoka earns her undying loyalty for Ange, something that pays off throughout the series as she is her most valuable ally.
** Later on, her helping save the dragons from Embryo's merging test in "Resonating Front Lines" gains her their help, as does covering their escape back into the portal from Embryo's trap the following episode, leading to a BigDamnHeroes from Sala when Ange is being pursued by the Diamond Rose Knights.
* TheLastOfTheseIsNotLikeTheOthers: Ange enumerates the number of things why she can't trust Hilda. Like the bra sabotage, the harassment she got from Hilda's minions, and the fact that the Perolina costume smells awful. Hilda calls out the last one saying that she didn't have anything to do with that one.
* LeeroyJenkins: Ange may be skilled at combat, but restraint sure ain't one of her strong suits.
* LethalChef: Ange somehow managed to make an exploding soup.
* LockedOutOfTheLoop: She was left completely in the dark about being a Norma, only for it to come to light at the worst possible moment. Her life goes from lap of luxury to living hell in a heartbeat.
%%* LoveInterest: To both Tusk and Hilda.
* LuredIntoATrap: [[spoiler:Her intended rescue of her sister turns out to be a setup.]]
* MaddenIntoMisanthropy: Ange's gone from optimistic, friendly princess to a cynical and insouciant survivor. And it's not even for a lack of trying in her hometown; she tried the diplomatic approach with Akiho when sneaking back to the mainland, only for the latter to snitch on her. After nearly getting executed for being a Norma, she really lets her former people have it for their savagery, and later leaves them to [[ScrewThisImOuttaHere fend for themselves]] when Embryo [[YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness severs the mana network]] and begins the world's destruction when they still act hostile towards her after demanding her protection, even though they disowned her in the first place.
** Averted in ''VideoGame/SuperRobotWarsV''. By the time things go to hell with her, she's already interacted with so many non-Mana user humans that her MisanthropeSupreme personality never comes to light. She still will never forgive or forget everything the Mana users did to her, but knows that there's no point in continuing her discrimination now that the distinction between them and Norma have disappeared.
* MadeOfIron: Some of the things this woman has experienced should have wrecked her body. She broke her commander's metallic arm while the latter was conducting a cavity search, survived drowning and a snake bite, got up after being smacked by a Schooner-class DRAGON which clearly was at least almost twice her height, was forced to pull a cart filled with tombstones despite being injured and made worse by Hilda kicking her shoulder, kept dealing with friendly fire and DRAGON attack at the same time which resulted in a lot of repairs for Villkiss, was grazed in her left shoulder from a surprise attack from her sister, tortured and almost near death's door with her hanged at the gallows yet still kicked ass like nothing was wrong with her, got her ass whooped by Jill and all she got was a slight minor inconvenience after she woke up, free-fall from the sky with no parachute, and start up Villkiss submerged underwater and the only comment she has is that it felt refreshing.
* MakeItLookLikeAStruggle: Evidently with Misty, who seemed to be willing to cooperate in Ange's escape in "Bikini Escape". Done again with Salia in "God's Soul-Searching".
* TheManTheyCouldntHang: After Julio captures her, he attempts to execute her. But even though it's a long-drop gallows, she survives the initial drop and is able to speed off with Tusk like nothing happened.
* MementoMacGuffin: The ring given to her by her mother synchronizes with Villkiss.
* MidSeasonUpgrade: By the time of "Arzenal Burns" she learns to unlock Villkiss's alternate forms, allowing access to previously unknown powers, and later replaces its assault rifle with Enryugo's beam cannon.
* MilitaryMaverick: She becomes well-known amongst the Norma at Arzenal for disregarding orders and can still bring out positive results.
* MistakenForMurderer: Sylvia mistakes Ange for killing their parents and Julio. Sylvia realizes the truth after Liza's WhamLine towards the end of the series.
* {{Misblamed}}: In-universe. While it's true technically she had been killing dragons earlier as implicated when she was in their home dimension, she did so mainly because that was her only way of earning her livelihood as a norma. It also applies to the rest of the norma, who were attacked in "Dragon Song" during the dragon siege, when the real target should have been the Column of Dawn.
* MiseryPoker: With Hilda while in confinement over who had it the worst over their failed reunions.
* MsFanservice: The biggest providers of these in the series but definitely not the only one.
* MyCountryTisOfTheeThatISting: She hates the world of mana for turning on her and the rest of her ilk.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: [[spoiler:Once she realizes that the [=DRAGONs=] were originally humans and the fact that she personally killed a DRAGON with her own hands, Ange breaks down and [[GoryDiscretionShot vomits]].]]
* NiceToTheWaiter: To Momoka, who she has valued as a close friend since childhood.
* NoGoodDeedGoesUnpunished: Saves Akiho from a midair fall during the game of Iaria at the cost of victory. Guess who snitches on her in "Traitorous Homeland"?
* NoSell: She casually avoids all the bullying attempts made by Rosalie and Chris.
* NoSenseOfDirection: It becomes a RunningGag for her in the HighSchoolAU spin-off.
* NonchalantDodge: When Rosaline "[[MakeItLookLikeAnAccident accidentally]]" throws her food on Ange, Ange just barely sidesteps while the food hits the person in front of Ange.
* NotInThisForYourRevolution: Refuses to be part of Jill's Libertas, instead preferring to find where the truth lies for herself, and not be used as an UnwittingPawn. [[spoiler:The script is soon flipped. It is revealed Jill is more intent on killing Embryo than freeing the Norma.]]
* NotMeThisTime: Sylvia believes that Ange killed Julio [[spoiler:but Liza points out to her that Embryo is Julio's real killer]].
* NotSoInvincibleAfterAll: [[TurnsRed Michael Mode]] Villkiss can shrug through any ballistic weaponry very easily and can smash through ships as if it were rice paper. However, shoot a powerful enough beam weapon on it and it goes down very easily as Ange and Momoka find out the hard way when the energy reserves went all the way down to zero from shielding the impact, crashing Villkiss to a river.
%%* OfficialCouple: With Tusk and Hilda.
* OnceKilledAManWithANoodleImplement: Okay well she didn't really kill them (though admittedly she could have) but she did knock out three people while wearing nothing but a bikini and the head of the Perolina costume. The third one got knocked out from her ''sheer presence alone''. [[spoiler:And then there's the thing she did against Salia, Irma, and Tanya with nothing more ''than a pen''.]]
* OppositesAttract: With Tusk.
-->'''Ange:''' Hey Tusk, thank you for everything. You always have the right answer. Plus, you're so levelheaded and gentle too. I trust you.
---->''later''
-->'''Ange:''' We're so different. I'm too quick to get upset, I can be stubborn, I freak out a lot.
* OneWomanArmy: In "Momoka Has Arrived!", she solos a squadron of dragons and get all the cash. Too bad it was all done off screen. In the preview of "Traitorous Homeland", [[spoiler:she and Momoka become a two-man army with Momoka driving an Iaria board while Ange firing, guns ablazing. ''On foot'']]. In "Arzenal Burns", she nearly solos a fleet and would have completed it if Embryo hadn't secured the last kill himself.
* PayEvilUntoEvil: She often throws bad people under the bus if they've caused harm to her.
** She obliterates Julio's fleet in "Arzenal Burns" for everything he did to her and ordering the genocide of the Norma.
** In "Distorted World", she gives a BoomHeadshot to the Misurugi citizen who is about to kill her for refusing [[DirtyCoward his demands for her to help everyone]] after they turned on her for her Norma status.
* ThePenIsMightier: {{Curb stomp|Battle}}s [[spoiler:Salia, Irma, and Tanya with nothing more than a pen by poking Salia with it, distracting her enough that Ange can grab the gun quickly, shoot Irma's gun, and kick Tanya in the stomach. And lastly, judo throw Salia when the latter charges at her.]]
* PervertRevengeMode: Though there are ones that Tusk did deserve to be beaten up for because he just couldn't keep his mouth shut.
* PinPullingTeeth: Does this in both episodes 9 and 10. Her teeth really must be so strong to pull those.
* PlotArmor: Since she's the protagonist, she always has this active. In fact, if she didn't have it, she would have been dead so many times. From the failed first sortie, Villkiss's sabotage, the gallows and the crash landing in "The Survivors".
* {{Polyamory}}: In a surprising turn, by the end of the series, Ange has a loving boyfriend in Tusk and an equally loving (if a bit clingy) girlfriend in Hilda, whom she kissed as soon as Hilda thought she had no chance to be with her anymore.
* PoorCommunicationKills: A lot of Ange's problems could have been avoided or at least discussed if she said something to other people. Then again, she does have trust issues.
* ThePowerOfTrust: After being lied to about being a Norma, being outed on the worst possible day, shipped off to society's PenalColony to be hazed and possibly killed, and ultimately betrayed by her sister and her old friends, Ange takes huge stock in whatever little trust she has left to give. Little wonder the ones she trusts the most are her closest allies, chiefly Momoka and Tusk, and Sala and Hilda, who she needed a little time (or shared circumstance) to warm up to. Jill, who considers her subordinates as {{Unwitting Pawn}}s, not so much.
* PreAssKickingOneLiner: She utters one to Salia as part of her WorldOfCardboardSpeech when she is about to go on her RoaringRampageOfRevenge on Julio, to the point that she threatens her to get of her way or be killed.
* PreMortemOneLiner:
** She says "You don't deserve the air you breathe, ''you insect!''" to Julio in "Arzenal Burns" before Embryo intervenes.
** And in "Beyond Time", she yells "You wanna screw with me again? ''Give it a few thousand years!''" to [[spoiler:Embryo]] before she blasts Hysterica.
* PrepareToDie: She is ready to kill her brother as payback in "Arzenal Burns", until Embryo intervenes and does the deed.
* AProtagonistShallLeadThem: After Hilda hands leadership of Libertas over to her in "Distorted World".
* ProtectorBehindBars: When her sister sends out a distress call at the end of "Salia's Gloom".
* QuitYourWhining: Ange does this twice in "Distorted World": first to Jill for not confronting her past simply because she is no longer commander, and later to Sylvia for trying to avoid responsibility and never trying to walk after her legs had long since healed.
* RammingAlwaysWorks: After finding out that the red light protects her and the machine, her first use of it is to ram at ships in Flight Mode.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: She doesn't hesitate to call out anyone for their cruel actions.
** During the escape from Arzenal, Ange tells Hilda she doesn't trust her after she sabotaged Villkiss, tormented her, and tried to have her killed via UnfriendlyFire as she attempts to ditch her as payback. She changes her mind after Hilda reveals she got on Zola's good side to survive, and wanted to reunite with her mom. [[spoiler:Ange gives one to herself after witnessing the true nature of the "Peaceful and Just" people of Misurugi. She goes as far as calling herself a "dumbass" for all of talk of "friendship and bonds" she did as Angelise. She also thanks Julio for reveling her as a Norma so she wouldn't be like them anymore, and [[HumansAreTheRealMonsters Sylvia for showing her the dark side in the humans and calls the crowd disgusting beasts]] right before she leaves.]]
** Does it again to the same people in the finale of "Distorted World" [[DirtyCoward when they demand she save them]]. As well as Sylvia when she reveals Sylvia had been healed by the doctor all along, but was unable to stand on her own two feet.
** And towards the end of "Beyond Time", she does this to Embryo after she once again rejects him to the point of [[spoiler:destroying Hysterica]].
* RebelliousSpirit: Don't ''ever'' expect Ange to do what she is told. She will [[ScrewTheRulesImDoingWhatsRight ignore orders]], question authority, [[TakeAThirdOption take third options]], break out any hostages you've taken, and [[DefiantToTheEnd defy you until the very end]]. In fact, characters who get along with her best, like Tusk, Hilda and Sala, are universally the ones who let her wild nature run riot and accept her "as is". And this is what Embryo seems to be utterly [[EvilCannotComprehendGood incapable of understanding]] in the GrandFinale: [[spoiler:the more he imposes himself onto Ange, the stronger her will to resist him becomes]]. She also reflects on this as a [[spoiler:common thread between all Norma and their ability and willingness to reject Embryo and his will and vision]].
* ReligiousAndMythologicalThemeNaming: The three different {{Super Mode}}s of Villkiss are named after the [[CelestialParagonsAndArchangels archangels]]. The red one is Michael, the blue one is Ariel, and the GoldenSuperMode is Uriel. And it's hinted in the opening that there's also a fourth mode. Although it's called [[OddNameOut The Primitive]] as this is merely the original version of Villkiss, matching up with the colors of the other Ragna-mails.
* RescueReversal: Sure Tusk did save her, but Ange knocked kicked him so hard since he did his usual gag. In turn, Ange and Momoka had to do the rest of the work and get them out of the execution grounds.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: She has pink eyes and it's a bad idea to screw with her. Just ask Julio and [[spoiler:Embryo]]
* RedIsHeroic: It turns out that Villkiss is the red Ragna-mail.
* RedOniBlueOni: Played straight with her being the Blue to Hilda's Red, and the Red to Jill's Blue. [[spoiler:When she meets Sala however, she's the red towards Sala's blue. This is played around with; while Ange is wearing blue, Sala is wearing red. Where Villkiss's eyes and the beam that she fired in her GoldenSuperMode are red, Sala's Para-mail's eyes and the beam that she fired are blue.]]
* RefusalOfTheCall: Downplayed. Ange, in theory, very much agrees with Libertas. She just doesn't want to be Jill's pawn.
* {{Reincarnation}}: As revealed in "Dragon Song", Ange and Sala have [[spoiler:met each other in different timelines where their either enemies, best friends, or sometimes have a ReincarnationRomance.]]
* RichesToRags: After the first episode, she goes from a princess to a mere soldier who is forced to fight the [=DRAGONs=] on Arzenal.
* RoaringRampageOfRescue: She comes to her sister's rescue packing some major heat as of "Traitorous Homeland".
* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: There's almost nothing keeping Ange from pursuing her revenge against Julio in "Arzenal Burns". That is, except for [[BadGuysDoTheDirtyWork Embryo interceding on her behalf and killing Julio]].
* RousingSpeech: She delivers one towards the Aurora crew [[spoiler:when Hilda relinquishes her command to Ange.]]
* RunningGag: She cannot for the life of her pronounce Salamandinay's full name, calling the latter Sala-"insert word here" several times.
* SaveThisPersonSaveTheWorld: Tusk and Hilda both go through hell and high water either concerned for her safety or protecting her, not just because of their feelings for her, but also knowing full well she's the one thing holding their side together against Embryo and the Diamond Rose Knights.
* ScrewTheRulesImDoingWhatsRight: She defies Jill's orders by proxy to go into the sub in order to stop the massacre in "Arzenal Burns". In "Conclusive Ocean", [[spoiler:Jill threatens her by killing Momoka if she doesn't comply with her orders to use the dragons as decoys. Ange refuses, rescues Momoka and fights her, Jill's orders be damned.]]
* ScrewYouElves: She does not take kindly to Sala's preaching regarding her race being peaceful and Ange's world being barbaric, considering Sala led the partial destruction of Arzenal and made no apologies.
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere:
** Subverted; she attempts to leave on her first mission, but it doesn't work out and results in the deaths of Miranda, Coco, and Zola.
** A straight example occurs in the finale of "Conclusive Ocean" when [[spoiler:Ange finally beats Jill and flees to meet up with Sala.]]
* SeanConneryIsAboutToShootYou: In the opening, she always points her handgun at the audience.
* SeeYouInHell:
** In "The Right Arm's Past", she yells "Drop dead, you evil bitch!" [[spoiler:to Jill after realizing she has been killing [=DRAGONs=] all along]].
** In "Conclusive Ocean", she says "Go to hell!" [[spoiler:when Jill attempts to force her to accept the latter's mission of killing Embryo]].
** In "God's Soul-Searching", Ange tells Embryo "You bastard! Drop dead!" [[spoiler:when she snaps out of Embryo's brainwashing]].
** During the finale of "Beyond Time", Ange screams "Burn in hell!" [[spoiler:as she begins to obliterate Hysterica for good]].
* SevenIsNana: Oh boy, where to ''start''. Her Villkiss has a seven, her baseball match against Sala has her wearing a jersey number 7, she had a hole in one shot in golf in hole 7, the race car she used has the number 7, [[YouAreNumberSix her Norma designation number]] is #1203-'''77''', and she's voiced by Creator/NanaMizuki in Japanese.
* ShamefulStrip: Ange has her princess clothes stripped off by Jill for a physical exam just before she is sent off to Arzenal.
* ShamelessFanserviceGirl: In "Lonely Mutiny", Emma asks Ange how she can walk around the base nearly-naked (due to ClothingDamage). She responds that she doesn't get embarrassed if a bug sees her naked. It's a sign that she's StoppedCaring, and doesn't intend to treat either Mana-users ''or'' Normas as human beings.
* ShamingTheMob: When the people of Misurugi forcibly demand her, as a princess, to help find them refuge from the collapsing world, especially after having long since turned on her for being a norma, she humilirates them with a BoomHeadshot and says ''"I don't give a damn. So, who's next?"'' Cue a ScrewThisImOuttaHere from the Misurugi citizens.
* SheKnowsTooMuch: Earns the deathly wrath of Salia for walking in on her while cosplaying as a magical girl. That Ange herself is indifferent makes no difference, as Salia attempts to kill her for finding out her secret. Good thing Ange can defend herself. (She does get sick from the resulting hot spring skirmish.)
* ShelteredAristocrat: She's kept in the dark about what Norma really are. When she does and also that she learns she is one, does it ever hit her hard...
* SingleWomanSeeksGoodMan: She finds love in Tusk, who is by far the nicest guy in the series.
* SkilledButNaive: Ange is very skilled at almost anything, but almost has no knowledge of how things work. Heck, she didn't know ''how to change clothes''.
* SpitefulSpit: Ange spits in Jill's face while being threatened by the latter in "Conclusive Ocean".
* SpoiledSweet: She may have started out bigoted towards norma, but only out of ignorance. That aside, she was compassionate towards everyone as a princess, and valued her maid Momoka as a true friend, gaining her lifelong loyalty.
* StrangerInAFamiliarLand: When she returns to the Misurugi Empire on her rescue mission. Only that she knew full well she wouldn't be welcome. She only didn't expect [[BurnTheWitch how unwelcome she would be]].
* StatingTheSimpleSolution: She's fond of proposing very simple ideas. Runway blocked by debris and a lot of enemies shooting at them? Blow it all up with Villkiss or any Para-mail weapon. Dimensional distortion destroying the city? Cancel it out by firing two [[WaveMotionGun Spacetime Convergence Cannons]]. Want {{L|aResistance}}ibertus to succeed? Join up with [[spoiler:the [=DRAGONs=] since it's a win-win situation.]] Unfortunately for her, the last one is met with resistance.
* StoppedCaring: A while at Arzenal, and the hostile treatment the people from her former home nation have taken the social graces out of her. Given how much she's been lied to and the cruelty her former people are capable of, it's no surprise.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: By the time of "Lonely Mutiny", she develops this personality.
* SwordAndGun: Although in Villkiss's case, it's sword on right hand and machine gun on the left hand.
* SympathyForTheDevil: Seems to bear a degree of pity for Julio in spite of everything he did.
* TakeAThirdOption: Her choices near the mid-season fork: Remain an Arzenal/Embryo lackey, or join Jill in Libertas and revolt against him... but be subordinate to her unscrupulous misuse and methods. She ends up with another by joining the dragons, but being subordinate to them, something that doesn't jive with her after being lied to too many times, not to mention the fact that they don't trust her returning to her world at first. Luckily, she convinces Sala and everyone else after she helps save them from Embryo's time-space convergence, and manages to forge an alliance between them and her fellow allies in her own world against their mutual nemesis.
* TalkToTheFist: All too often, in fact, it seems to have become her preferred way of communicating with anybody outside her TrueCompanions. Embryo has been killed at least thrice this way. She also punches Salia after being fed up with hearing how much [[YouTalkTooMuch the latter loves Embryo]] in "The Tuner of Time".
* TeleportSpam: In the exhibition of what Villkiss can do in the opening, the Blue Villkiss is capable of doing such things, though it is not used in the anime.
* ThatManIsDead: Or in her case, "That Princess is Dead." Ange tells Momoka that she would prefer to be referred to as "Ange" rather than her real name "Angelise". Momoka still calls her by her real name regardless.
* TheseHandsHaveKilled: [[spoiler:When she learns the secret about the [[=DRAGONs=]] she's been killing.]] Discussed in general in "Ange and Tusk".
* TheyDiedBecauseOfYou: Ange is on the receiving end after her first deployment for the deaths of Miranda, Coco, and Zola. Clearly took it to heart, judging from how she's prevented anyone else from dying since.
* ThisIsForEmphasisBitch: Tells Jill to "Drop dead, you evil bitch!" after [[spoiler:Jill enumerates the things [[IronicEcho Ange said at the bath]].]]
* ThisMeansWar: She vows to destroy the world in its current state at the end of "Goodbye From the Gallows" after her lynching, lashing and near-execution in her old hometown. Only thing keeping her from making good on her threat at the time was once again being stuck on a remote colony and lacking the means. Softens her stance after befriending and allying with the dragons.
%%* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: The tomboy to Momoka's girly girl.
* TomboyPrincess: Tomboy former princess, but the trope was in play here in "The Fallen Imperial Princess".
* TookALevelInCynic: Forget level; it didn't take long for her to get an epic destiny here.
* TookALevelInIdealism: After allying with the dragons and resolving to free Aura, she becomes more idealistic.
* ToughLove: Towards the end of the series, [[spoiler:she shoots at her sister to scare her into walking; she had already been informed by the royal doctors that Sylvia's legs had already healed.]]
* {{Troll}}: Usually in response to Salia heckling her.
* TrueCompanions: Hard to believe now that she used to have a close circle of friends whose friendship she valued over winning. How circumstances change things indeed. [[spoiler:Just look at "Goodbye From the Gallows" and ask her about her "friends" and her "bonds".]] In reality, the only thing that has changed is her level of trust. Anyone who does prove themselves is definitely one of these to her, and she will do anything for them. Use or betray her, and you might as well be dead to her.
%%* {{Tsundere}}: Boy, is she ever. Tusk and Sala in particular get hit with this hard.
* TurnTheOtherCheek: Forgives Liza for being part of Julio's schemes to kill her, and evidently, the dragon invasion.
* TurnsRed: In "Arzenal Burns", her Villkiss turns red after sending Salia falling into the waters.
* UnprovokedPervertPayback: Her reactions to Tusk with his face in her junk could almost give [[Manga/LoveHina Naru Narusegawa]] a run for her money. But then, given [[RapeAsDrama what she had just been through]] since coming to Arzenal, can you blame the poor girl for being a little skittish?
* UsedToBeASweetKid: Even as a little girl, despite her high status, Ange cared deeply about other people (or mana users at least). A flashback during episode 6 showed that when they were kids, Momoka accidentally broke one of Ange's dolls and Ange was more upset that Momoka was injured and hadn't treated her cut, saying that the doll could be replaced but Momoka couldn't.
* UsedToBeMoreSocial: Going from royalty to penal colony will certainly do that to anyone.
* UndyingLoyalty: Because of her trust issues, the people she trusts, of which there are very few, hold a very special place in her mind and heart, almost to the point of being a crutch. Momoka, her maid, and Tusk, her boyfriend, are joined by Hilda, her eventual girlfriend, and Sala, a FriendlyRival turned dear friend, both of whom she warmed up to after some initial suspicion or antagonism.
* UnwantedAssistance: In "Momoka Has Arrived!" towards Momoka, as she doesn't want to be reminded of her past. She changes her tune by episode's end and buys her safety, and soon becomes one of her most valued and trusted allies.
* UnwittingPawn: She almost ends up becoming Jill's pawn in her plans to kill Embryo, but eventually snaps out of it by the time of "Conclusive Ocean."
* TheWorldIsJustAwesome: She gazes in awe over the skyline as she remarks how amazing she finds the World of Mana the night before her baptism. She very quickly changes her tune.
* VitriolicBestBuds: With Hilda, as of "Goodbye From the Gallows".
* WarriorPrincess: Well, a former princess, but definitely qualifies from "Villkiss Awakens" onward. She regularly deals not only with the [=DRAGONs=] but also with friendly fire from some of her teammates.
* TheWatson: She almost always has no idea of the situation just like the viewers.
* WaveMotionGun: Villkiss's golden Uriel mode allows it to use its Space-Time Cannons to obliterate anything in its path.
* WideEyedIdealist: In "The Fallen Imperial Princess", she's only worried about being perfect as a princess, to paraphrase Julio. That is, a good face to the people she sees as good. Her life, and worldview come crashing down very soon over the next several episodes.
* WomanInWhite: Her final rider suit is white.
* TheWorfEffect: Suffers this trope from Sala outside her Ragna when the latter dropkicks her. Then she suffers this trope again in "Dark Angel of Destruction" [[spoiler:just to highlight the new Ragna-mails piloted by Salia, Chris, and Ersha.]]
* WorldOfCardboardSpeech:
** Delivers one towards Salia on why she went to her RoaringRampageOfRevenge in "Arzenal Burns":
--> '''Ange:''' This place, I liked living here. It was the the lousiest, filthiest place I'd ever seen, and the food tasted like shit... but I still had a great time. And now [[AllYourBaseAreBelongToUs it's destroyed]], thanks to him! ''(she cuts off Salia's Arquebus arm)'' [[ItsPersonal That's why I have to fight]]! ''(cuts off Salia's other Arquebus arm and sends her falling into the ocean)'' ''[[PreAssKickingOneLiner And if you get in my way]], [[IllKillYou you're dead]]!''
** She also delivers one and TheReasonYouSuckSpeech to Jill before kicking her down in the finale of "Conclusive Ocean":
--> '''Ange:''' I'm not you... [[BeYourself I'm ''me'']]! ''(kicks Jill away)'' You lost your battle when you pinned your hopes on me! You're done! ''(drops her knife)'' My friend says [[MeaningfulEcho "Nobody knows for sure what's right or wrong"]]. But now, I understand your methods are ''definitely'' wrong, [[FullNameUltimatum Alektra Maria von Loewenherz]]!
* WrestlerInAllOfUs: She puts Salia in a Sleeper Hold in "God's Soul-Searching".
* YouAreInCommandNow: In the final episodes of ''Cross Ange'', [[spoiler:Hilda gives command of the Aurora to Ange after she witnesses the latter's leadership skills]].
* YouAreNumberSix: Is assigned a number (Norma #1203-77) immedidately after her arrest.
* YouAreWhatYouHate: Ange makes her dislike of Norma fairly clear early in "The Fallen Imperial Princess"... which means it's fairly hard for her to swallow the fact that she ''is'' one. Grows out of it, and comes to loathe mana users for their prejudice.
* YouCantGoHomeAgain: After being exposed as a Norma, she is taken to Arzenal and [[spoiler:after Embryo is killed]], she says that she can't return home.
* YouShallNotPass: Holds off Embryo's three knights in order to allow Sala and the rest of the dragons to escape through the singularity after they find themselves led into a trap.

Formerly the [[NumberTwo deputy chief]] of Zola's squad, Salia gets promoted to captain when Zola is killed in action. Pilot of the AW-[=FZR304=] Arquebus Salia Custom.
----
* ACupAngst: Unfortunately, she's leading a squad who's well-stacked compared to her, the exception being Vivian.
* ADayInTheLimelight: "Salia's Gloom" focuses on her and her struggle as captain of a divided squad.
* AcePilot: A definite sniper example. She excels at long range.
* {{Adorkable}}: As somewhat exemplified with the abovementioned trope, [[spoiler:especially with the "Pretty Salian" schtick.]]
* AllThereInTheManual: Her full name, Salia [[NamedAfterSomeoneFamous Teresh]][[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valentina_Tereshkova kova]] is revealed on a [[https://twitter.com/anime_crossange/status/637298874936266752 Sunrise festival]].
* TheAnticipator: [[spoiler:Falls into this towards Ange when on Embryo's side.]]
* ArmorPiercingSlap: To Ange in "Arzenal Burns" after being compared unflatteringly to present-day Jill, albeit perhaps it was the fact that Ange spoke ill of Jill and disregarded her place as Jill's protege that Salia coveted and lost to her. [[spoiler:And then did it again in "The Tuner of Time"]].
* TheCaptain: Takes this position after Zola's death. However, she's still a newbie as she can't get initially her subordinates to cooperate with each other. [[spoiler:Becomes later the (Knight) leader of Embryo's Ragna-mail squad.]]
* ChildhoodFriend: To Mei.
* TheChosenWannabe: When it comes to piloting Villkiss, to the point where she insists on the chosen one, Ange, following her so-called duty to Alektra as Villkiss pilot.
* ClosetGeek: Keeps her secret hobbies secret and threatens anyone who might expose her.
* ColorMotif: Blue.
* CombatPragmatist: Aside from being a brilliant commander and [[TheStrategist Strategist]], she also has no qualms about attacking from ambush, using a DefensiveFeintTrap, or SnipingTheCockpit when fighting against Para-mails.
* TheCorruptible: Salia is corrupted by Embryo after Ange defeats her in "Arzenal Burns". She gets better.
* CosplayOtakuGirl: Loves to cosplay as a MagicalGirl. Also, Ange comments on the uniforms of the Diamond Rose Knights (which she leads), indicating that she probably picked them too.
* CovertPervert: Keeps a PornStash, but can be homicidal if someone else takes a look at it.
* CreateYourOwnVillain: Ends up siding with Embryo due to Jill's disregard for her, which Embryo promptly capitalized on. Getting knocked into the sea by Ange didn't help matters, eather.
%%* DangerouslyShortSkirt
* TheDragon: [[spoiler:She does a brief FaceHeelTurn and becomes the head of [[BigBad Embryo's]] Diamond Rose Knights, before doing a HeelFaceTurn when he betrays and abandons her]].
* DisproportionateRetribution: Makes an attempt on Ange's life for the crime of [[SheKnowsTooMuch accidentally walking in on]] [[ClosetGeek one of her cosplay sessions]].
* DrivenToVillainy: Her lack of recognition from Jill and jealously of Ange drive her to side with Embryo.
* EleventhHourSuperpower: [[spoiler:Activates the Ariel-Mode of Cleopatra in the final battle.]]
* EmpathicWeapon: She uses the fact that [[spoiler:Ragna-mails are this to regain control of her Ragna-mail.]]
* FaceHeelTurn: [[spoiler:She sides with Embryo until the latter abandons her in "Eve of Destruction".]]
* FallenHero: She was once a well-respected captain of her troops in Arzenal [[spoiler:before Embryo took her in to lead the Diamond Rose Knights. She gets better towards the end of the series]].
* FatalFlaw: Both her jealousy of Ange and desire for recognition from Jill [[spoiler: result in her being DrivenToVillainy by joining Embryo]]. She gets better during the finale of "Eve of Destruction".]]
* FlowerMotifs: There are two white lily emblems on her paramail. They are either a stealth reference to Holy Knight Pretty [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lillian_%28name%29 Lilian]], her favorite magical girl series or a sign of [[YuriGenre her adoration for Alektra]].
* GirlishPigtails: It's weird considering she's one of the most serious characters in the series, until she starts cosplaying as a MagicalGirl.
* GoodIsNotNice: Tries to be stern, but fair.
* GoneHorriblyRight: Her attempt to be like her idol Alektra. [[spoiler:She eventually succeeds and pilots Villkiss's sister-machine, except that she ends up on the other side and falls in love with Embryo.]]
* GreenEyedMonster: Is a bit envious of Ange receiving the privilege of riding Villkiss. Gets past this after failing to master it, and witnessing Ange activate its GoldenSuperMode. She remains bitter over losing her spot as Jill's favorite to her and Ange not appreciating it to the point where she enforces Ange to toe the line as ordered by Jill.
* HardWorkHardlyWorks: All her years-long learning and training are not enough to master Villkiss. [[spoiler:Eventually subverted, as it does pay off when she gets Villkiss's sister machine and the ring to activate it.]]
* HeelFaceTurn: By the end of the series, a combination of [[spoiler:both Jill calling her out and Embryo's hijacking of her mecha in order to save his life finally convince her to return to the protagonists side.]]
* HiddenDepths: She loves to cosplay as a MagicalGirl and reads romantic novels. ''Heterosexual'' romantic novels in an island filled with nothing but women.
* {{Hypocrite}}: Salia calls out her teammates for bullying Ange, yet when Ange joins the First Troop, she kicks her out of the locker room, while she's naked. She constantly lectures Ange for violating orders, yet she violates Jill's orders in favor of trying to pilot Villkiss and ends up getting suspended.
* HopeSpot: "Salia's Gloom" is this for her. She manages to solve most problems of her squad and starts accepting Ange as Villkiss's pilot. [[YankTheDogsChain Then Ange deserts in the very next episode, albeit for sympathetic reasons, and later has her childhood dreams of piloting Villkiss shot down.]]
* IgnoredEnamoredUnderling: Towards [[spoiler:Embryo]] and also towards Jill beforehand.
* IJustWantToBeSpecial: Her defining motivation. She wanted to be the one to master Villkiss and avenge Alektra. [[spoiler:She gets the first part more or less after siding with Embryo and second in the finale.]]
* IllKillYou:
** Threatens Ange by saying it word-for-word as she ambushes her at the hot spring as retribution for ruining her "de-stressing routine".
** She ends up on the receiving end in "Arzenal Burns" courtesy of Ange as the latter decides to kill Julio herself.
* ImprobableAimingSkills: Disarms Vivian by shooting her gun out of her hands with just a hand gun while both are on different moving vehicles.
* IOweYouMyLife: [[spoiler:Sides with Embryo after being saved from drowning.]]
* IrrationalHatred: Blames the lack of team unity in "Salia's Gloom" on Ange, even though much of it is on Hilda, Chris and Rosalie trying to shoot down the latter in UnfriendlyFire.
* ItsPersonal: She wants to avenge Jill after her first Libertas's failure.
* KnifeNut: Always brings out her knife as her WeaponOfChoice on foot. Probably a result of her imitation of Jill who owns a collection of knives.
* TheLeader: Of the [[spoiler:Diamond Rose Knights until Embryo screws them over.]]
* LuminescentBlush: After finding out that Ange and Tusk were stranded on the same island.
* MidSeasonUpgrade: From her Arquebus to [[spoiler:the [=EM-CBX002=] Cleopatra, Villkiss sister-machine she received from Embryo.]]
* MistreatmentInducedBetrayal: Zig-zagged. [[spoiler:After learning that Embryo lied to her she lets Ange escape which ruins his plans, but stays with him because she does not see another place for herself.]] Played straight with her prior defection due to Jill's neglect and Ange knocking her Arquebus into the ocean and after [[spoiler:Embryo abandons her to the DRAGONs.]]
* MurderIsTheBestSolution: Tries to kill Ange after she saw her cosplaying in order to prevent her from telling others. Tries this again in "Distorted World" in order [[spoiler:to prove to Embryo that she's better.]]
* MurderTheHypotenuse: Tries to kill [[spoiler:Ange]] in "Distorted World" to become Embryo's most valued person but Jill fortunately intervenes.
* NeverMyFault: At one point, she blames her unhappiness on Ange. Much of this can be chalked up to her Pavlovian conditioning, leading her to a need for approval. Her understandable disappointment with Ange for her insubordination falls flat when she attempts to shank her for walking in on her secret, even though Ange admitted she couldn't care less.
* NotSoAboveItAll: She's quite emotional underneath the serious exterior.
* OneeSama: Alektra was one to her and she is to the youngest normas.
* ThePeterPrinciple: Promoted to captain before she's ready. She gets better.
* ProudToBeAGeek: Start openly using silly attack formation names [[spoiler:after siding with Embryo.]]
* RedOniBlueOni: The Blue Oni to Vivian's red who is also her roommate.
* RescueRomance: With [[spoiler:Embryo]]. Unfortunately for her, it's one-sided.
* {{Revenge}}: She vowed to avenge her childhood's hero after the first Libertas ended in failure.
* SayMyName: She yells Alektra's name [[spoiler:when the latter dies in "Beyond Time".]]
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: After being curb-stomped by Ange and ignored by Jill, she ends up joining Embryo's side.
* SkewedPriorities:
** Not completely her fault, but her hero worship of Jill makes her too obsessive over impressing her, and getting Villkiss. Reaches near-[[TheNeidermeyer Neidermeyer]] levels in "Goodbye From the Gallows" (if not 7 for her attempt to kill Ange for finding out her cosplay hobby secret), when she tells Ange, who has been suspended for escaping Arzenal, that Villkiss has been confiscated from her, even though that mainly applies to luxuries bought with money, and tries to commandeer Villkiss herself against Jill's orders in the next episode when the dragons launch their surprise attack, ending in near catastrophe when Salia is unable to pilot it.
** In "Arzenal Burns", when Ange knocks her Para-mail into the ocean during the Arzenal siege to stop her from ordering her to go back and follow Jill to the sub, Salia has an OhCrap moment and curses her... for curb-stomping her.
** Later, when Embryo takes her in, she tries to be the object of his affection, to the point where when she realizes she's being used and that Ange is Embryo's true crush, she only tries to replace her in Embryo's eyes by killing her.
* SmugSuper: She becomes this when she sides with Embryo. Unfortunately for her, it was only a matter of time it gets deconstructed once Embryo [[YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness ditches her]].
* SubordinateExcuse: It's implied that she was in love with [[spoiler:her commander Jill/Alektra]], and she later falls in love with [[spoiler:Embryo when he saves her from drowning, becoming his [[TheDragon Dragon]]]].
* TautologicalTemplar: She is a massive stickler for rules.
* TeleportSpam: [[spoiler:After activating the blue Ariel mode, she uses it to distract another Ragna-mail.]]
%%* TheThreeFacesOfEve: The seductress.
* TookALevelInBadass: After getting her own [[spoiler:Ragna-mail]].
* {{Tsundere}}: [[spoiler:Her reasons for "not really helping Ange but helping anyway". Ange had to cover it up by giving her a choke hold and stripping her uniform.]]
* UnknownRival: For Ange when it comes to Villkiss.
* UnwittingPawn: Salia thinks that she's a dedicated knight of Embryo, but Jill insists that Embryo doesn't love anyone. This lesson hits her home once Embryo abandons her in "Eve of Destruction".
* WellDoneSonGuy: Has this relationship with Jill. Her desire to pilot Villkiss stems from Jill's [[ThePromise promise to let her pilot Villkiss]] and her vow to avenge her childhood's hero. Unfortunately for Salia, her attempts to pilot Villkiss doesn't work out.
* YouAreInCommandNow: After Zola's death, Jill promotes her to captain. Naturally, she's too early to assume said position.
* YouAreNumberSix: Is assigned a number (Norma #2186-32) after she was captured as a baby.
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: Dark blue, to be exact.
* YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness: Towards the end of the series, [[spoiler:Embryo abandons her along with the rest of the Diamond Rose Knights. She survives]].
* ZettaiRyouiki: She wears thigh-high stockings when wearing her normal Arzenal outfit. [[spoiler:She loses it when she defects to Embryo.]]

[[folder:Hilda]]
!! Hildegard "Hilda" Schlievogt
->'''Voiced by''': Creator/YukariTamura (Japanese), Creator/CarliMosier (English)
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gersgfs_950.jpg]]
Hilda is a veteran para-mail pilot and one of Zola's former lovers. She despises Ange for inadvertently killing Zola in her first mission. Pilot of the AW-[=CBR115=] Glaive Hilda Custom.
----
* AceCustom: Her {{red|OnesGoFaster}} para-mail is a heavily customized exemplar of the mass-produced models. She says that she spent a lot of money just to customize her Para-mail.
* AcePilot: She is one of the best pilots in the squad, and proves it while fighting a Ragna-mail piloting Chris to a standstill from a Para-mail, an impressive feat given the gulfs in power and mobility, and the fact that Chris had just sniped the Vilkiss and sent it into a crash landing.
* AlphaBitch: She hates Ange, possibly for reminding her of how she herself used to be while at Arzenal, and spends just about every waking moment trying to torment her, even sabotaging her vehicle before a fight. But then it's revealed she was mostly acting the part so she could survive, and her only wish is to escape so she can finally reunite with her mother. She keeps the Alpha but drops the Bitch.
%%* AntiHero
* AsskickingEqualsAuthority: She's a capable fighter and pilot who becomes commander of the Aurora [[spoiler:when Jill is asked to step down]] in the second half of "God's Soul-Searching". She concedes leadership to Ange when the latter returns, admitting to be better at being in the line of fire than leading.
* BadassGay: A lesbian and one of the best pilots in her squad, [[ButNotTooGay although she does seem to have some mild interest in Tusk]].
* BeautyIsNeverTarnished: Averted in "Goodbye From the Gallows" where she still shows signs of the beating received by the policemen who recaptured her.
* BikerBabe: Steals a bike from a gas station in "Bikini Escape".
* BiTheWay: She has several female lovers, but also [[spoiler:offers to take Tusk's virginity, regardless if she only does so to secure Tusk's cooperation in her planned rescue of Ange. The second intro also shows her coyly flirting with him]].
* BreakTheCutie: Getting taken away from her mother and being taken to Arzenal. [[spoiler:When she finally gets back, her mother [[IHaveNoSon has willingly forgotten her]] and moved on with a [[ReplacementGoldfish new daughter named Hilda]]. And then she gets beaten and arrested. She bottoms out after being detained in Arzenal before Ange suggests destroying the status quo.]]
* BringIt: When Julio's fleet comes to destroy Arzenal and Jill announces the start of Libertas, she's only too happy to jump at the chance to get back at human society for what she's had to go through. Also says the following to Chris when the latter, while one of Embryo's Diamond Rose Knights, intends to kill her and her fellow comrades:
-->'''Hilda:''' Oh, yeah? Knock yourself out.
* BrokenBird: She was sent to Arzenal at age 5, leading her to adopt an AlphaBitch persona and become [[DepravedHomosexual Zola's]] plaything for her protection. She does make it back home, only for [[IHaveNoSon her mother to renounce her for being a norma]], leading her to hit rock bottom when she arrives back at Arzenal after getting beaten up by the cops. She gets better after Ange proposes they destroy the current world order, leading her to eagerly jump at the opportunity when Libertas restarts.
* BrokenPedestal: To both Chris and Rosalie as shown in "Goodbye From the Gallows", at least until they reconcile before the GrandFinale. Her mother [[spoiler:and eventually Jill]] also become one for her.
* CharacterDevelopment: Hilda starts the series as a quiet and passive, likely unwilling plaything for her captain Zola. Once Zola dies, Hilda seemingly becomes the new Zola (minus the PrisonRape), as a domineering and antagonistic teammate who can't spare a second without mocking or hazing the heroine. But once her motives are revealed, and it turns out she was never really that cruel deep down, Hilda allows herself to be more caring to Ange as she wishes her well in their attempts to reunite with family. Hilda, after a disastrous reunion with her cruel mother, becomes a broken shell, not even caring that she's surrounded and beaten by cops, and tries cutting off all ties to her teammates as she practically falls into depression. It isn't until she bonds with Ange during their suspension at Arzenal that Hilda recovers, and becomes just as willing to burn down the world as Ange. She's much kinder, more leader-like, and more willing to show who she really is to people, while still being the same FieryRedhead that drew Chris, Rosalie, and even Ange to her.
* ClingyJealousGirl: [[spoiler:Turns into this for Ange, questioning whether she slept with Tusk while in the middle of groping her in the shower. She then asks Tusk personally about this (by [[BedmateReveal climbing on top of him wearing nothing but her pink underwear, and offering to take his first time]].) Also has a [[FunnyBackgroundEvent funny moment pooh-poohing Ange's inadvertently naked reunion moment with Tusk behind their backs]] in the final episode.]]
* CrotchGrabSexCheck: Does this [[spoiler:towards Tusk at the end of "Dark Angel of Destruction".]]
* CryCute: When she confesses her love to Ange, she starts tearing up, convinced that Ange will never love her back, and even that she'll never be as close a friend to her as Sala. She chides herself for worrying about romance when the world is about to end. But then Ange kisses her anyway, says the world should end if it doesn't want them together, and confesses she needs Hilda just as much as Hilda needs her. The tears, once of sorrow, turn into sheer joy as she happily embraces Ange.
* DespairEventHorizon: After being sent back to Arzenal following her failed reunion, she gets suspended along with Ange. She's lost everything; her Arzenal riches, her hopes of coming back home, and her friends, who she doesn't try explaining herself to. Ange, her cellmate, saves her from the brink with her idea to change the current world order.
* DisappearedDad: It's never revealed what happened to her father although it is possible he abandoned her and her mother when she was born a Norma.
** For that matter, the father of her little sister her mother bore to replace her is never mentioned either.
* TheDogBitesBack: Maybe not on as direct a basis as Ange, but after getting forcibly taken away from her mother as a child, being turned away when she manages to get back home, and getting beaten by cops, it definitely counts when she gladly agrees to Jill's plan of resistance in "Arzenal Burns" and shoots up some Mana doomtroopers.
* DoesNotLikeMen: Initially demonstrated this in ''VideoGame/SuperRobotWarsV'' once the ''Cross Ange'' cast crossed paths with the rest of the roster--possibly as a reaction to Chris and Rosalie falling head-over-heels for [[Anime/MobileSuitGundamSEED Athrun]]. She mellows out enough that she can work with the male members of the roster, though.
* EasilyForgiven: Averted. Ange enumerates the number of reasons why she wouldn't trust Hilda as she is just about to ditch her. It is only after she persists in getting on the ship and reveals to Ange that she wants to go back to her mom that Ange helps her from falling off the ship.
* EleventhHourSuperpower: Twice in the final episode of ''Cross Ange''. [[spoiler:First, she gets Chris's Ragna-mail and then she activates its Michael-mode.]]
* EmpathicWeapon: She uses the fact that [[spoiler:Ragna-mails are this to regain control of her Ragna-mail.]]
* EveryoneCanSeeIt: Rosalie repeatedly mentions how often Hilda's been thinking about Ange and waiting for Ange to return after her capture by Embryo. Hilda is a little flustered and annoyed, but doesn't offer much resistance, and eventually does come to admit she loves Ange after all.
* FashionableAsymmetry: Her skirt is asymmetric.
* FieryRedhead: Very hotheaded indeed.
* FireForgedFriends: With Ange when they escape in "Bikini Escape". She's the first person Ange reaches out to in her wish to destroy the world.
* {{Foil}}: To Vivian. She started out as Ange's bully, while Vivian was the first to befriend her. Both were separated from their mothers from a young age. Her mother disowned her and had a replacement Hilda, Vivian's mother missed her and was happy to meet her again.
* FreudianExcuse: She was taken away from her mother and sent to Arzenal eleven years ago, and had been plotting to escape for years, which partly involved getting in Zola's inner circle, even if it meant doing nasty things.
* {{Gayngst}}: Very mild, but [[spoiler:when she confesses her feelings to Ange, she says she knows it's weird because both of them are women, before Ange kisses her to reassure her that she doesn't think so. It's a little odd, as Hilda seems perfectly comfortable with her sexuality both before and after she mentions this, although her relationships before were only superficial (or so she claimed), whereas her feelings for Ange at this point were genuine]].
* GiantRobotHandsSaveLives: [[spoiler:How she saves both Chris and Rosalie from falling.]]
* GirlishPigtails: She had them since childhood. [[spoiler:They are hinting her aspiration to return to her lost home.]]
* HadToBeSharp: Hardened herself in order to survive Arzenal.
* HaremSeeker: Claims Zola's other slaves after the Captain dies.
* HerHeartWillGoOn: She still longs for Zola but knows she won't be coming back. However, she still tries to avenge her in her own way. [[spoiler:Subverted as of "Bikini Escape". Hilda reveals that she let herself become Zola's plaything because she would do anything to escape. She still did admit however that she did love Zola before tossing Zola's cybernetic eye.]]
* HiddenDepths: [[spoiler:Is hinted to have a secret domestic side in the Cross Ange PS vita game where one of the potential storylines involves the OriginalGeneration character Naomi entering into a relationship with Hilda, the ending of which shows Hilda happily cooking a meal for them in the same dress she wore in episode 9]]
* {{Hotblooded}}: Incredibly spunky and temperamental.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: After Zola died, Hilda almost immediately started adopting some of her old captain's personality, and even bought all of her old stuff (including - with full consent - Chris and Rosalie). It almost seemed like she was actively trying to be a ReplacementGoldfish for someone she may have loved. But it turns out, no, she didn't love Zola at all, and was never truly as cruel as she made everyone think. Ange doesn't forgive her at all, and even tries to leave her behind when they attempt an escape, but changes her mind after Hilda reveals her goal was to reunite with a member of her family, much like Ange was doing to her sister. From there, the Jerkass finally goes away for good, and Hilda becomes a very close and trusted friend (and more) to Ange. This even extends to her saying she never cared about Chris and Rosalie; she did, despite everything, and would later risk her life to save them when they were in trouble.
* IronicEcho: Her ordeal in "Traitorous Homeland" has a couple: [[spoiler:First, her mother having moved on with another child after losing her echoes what Ange told the young mother in "[[Recap/CrossAngeEp1TheFallenImperialPrincess The Fallen Imperial Princess]]". The next happens moments later after getting caught and beaten by cops when she wonders if Ange found her sister, a direct echo to Ange wondering in the beginning of the episode if Hilda found her mother. Bonus downer points for also coming moments after Ange's own quest ending in betrayal.]]
* ItsPersonal: After her reunion attempt with her mother ends in both rejection and capture on top of everything else she's had to put up with, she really has a bone to pick with mana society.
* JerkassHasAPoint: While she's a jerk about it, a lot of the reasons why she is one to Ange makes a lot of sense. Ange did inadvertently kill off three people from a DRAGON attack, she also points out to Momoka that while she's accusing everyone that all Norma are below her, her beloved Angelise is one, and Ange treating Momoka like dirt despite the fact that Momoka only had the best of intentions to see Ange again.
* JumpedAtTheCall: When Jill initiates Libertas in "Arzenal Burns", she's among the first in line. After being dispatched to Arzenal and later being turned on by her own mother, she's definitely ready to fight back.
* MiseryPoker: They had already achieved mutual respect and understanding after their escape from Arzenal, but their attempts to reunite with their families fail, they're captured and thrown in prison. They only really start bonding once they start comparing their suffering to each other, but unlike most examples, it wasn't quite a competition; more a way to vent their frustrations and reach a greater level of empathy with one another.
* MotiveRant: A rare anti-heroic example. In episode 7's climax, Hilda admits she never loved Zola and forced herself to befriend two people she couldn't stand, and did everything she could so she could survive, even if it meant screwing over Ange since Ange had a habit of kill stealing (and thus money-draining) from her teammates, including Hilda. She caps it off by declaring she ''will'' see her mom again, and it's enough to convince Ange to rescue her from falling off their ship.
* LingerieScene: After [[spoiler:Ange found out who is the one behind Villkiss's sabotage]], Hilda is shown wearing pink underwear. Has another one in the Aurora when tries goading some info out of Tusk about whether he and Ange had sex.
* NotSoAboveItAll: She claims to not care at all for Chris and Rosalie, first to Ange then to their faces, but her small look of sorrow after the duo leave her in a cell suggests she's not really telling the whole truth. It's later made clear, despite her intentions and initial feelings, she did care for Chris and Rosalie, and reconciles with them both by the end of the series.
* NotSoDifferent: Ersha notes that Ange behaves a lot like Hilda did when she first arrived at Arzenal. "Bikini Escape" adds to the similarity, with Hilda wanting to escape and go back to her mother just like Ange wanted to escape and rescue her little sister. They bond after failing and getting sent back, with Hilda developing a crush on her.
* OfficialCouple: With Ange by "Distorted World". The reason this isn't listed under Polyamory is because she's not happy Ange is so affectionate with Tusk and it turns into a minor RunningGag, even though she does show some mild interest in Tusk despite herself, and Ange reassures her (with both the kiss and other showings of affection) that she doesn't play favorites with the people she loves.
* ParentalAbandonment: An interesting example: her mom was heartbroken after initially losing her, but told her to leave after she returned, since she had moved on with [[ReplacementGoldfish another child]].
* PoliceBrutality: Victim of this when she got captured as a child. [[spoiler:She becomes a victim of another one after her failed reunion with her mother.]]
* PragmaticHero: A lighter shade of the Tarantino protagonist with a vendetta, she has a serious bone to pick with the World of Mana following her life at Arzenal and her mom rejecting her. While Ange has become a little more idealistic, Hilda remains as no-nonsense as ever, not hesitating to engage her former friend Chris in battle. At the same time, she will protect her comrades and stay true to the cause with all her heart.
* QuitYourWhining: In "Eve of Destruction", she gives one and a ShutUpHannibal to [[spoiler:Chris]] when the latter goes AxCrazy on the [=DRAGONs=].
-->'''Hilda:''' Enough with the bitching and whining, geez! You got your point across, you morbid little freak!
* RapeAsBackstory: Of the QuestionableConsent variety, having gone along with Zola's assaults pretty much just to survive life in Arzenal.
* {{Red Oni|BlueOni}}: The Red to Ange's Blue.
* ReplacementGoldfish: Her younger sister is this to Hilda's mother after losing Hilda. She has the same name as Hilda.
* SkinshipGrope: When they're in the shower, Hilda playfully gropes Ange and teases her a bit about the weight she's gained in her chest. She complains about how Ange didn't bother to contact them when she was with Sala in the dragon world, admits she was worried sick about her, and disapproves of how she brought a boy with her, all the while running her hands over Ange's stomach and pinching her hip. When Ange insists she didn't have sex with Tusk, Ange welcomes her back with a small kiss on her shoulder, surprising Ange who, for her part, spends whole the scene looking both dumbfounded and flattered.
* SkywardScream: Lets out a painful one [[spoiler:after her mother pushes her out of her life.]]
* TheStarscream: Challenges Salia's authority and wants to replace her as captain of the squad and does so by the time "The Right Arm's Past". Then, Salia's defection leads to Hilda assuming Jill's command by the time of "God's Soul-Searching".
* TakingTheBullet: Takes one shielding Chris. Thankfully she only gets grazed in the shoulder.
* TearfulSmile: [[spoiler:As she lies down on the ground in the rain after getting beaten by the cops, wondering if Ange and Sylvia had reunited.]]
* TryNotToDie: This is what she says to Ange [[spoiler:after they part ways at the end of "Bikini Escape" when she's going back to her hometown at Enderant Union while Ange and Momoka are going to the former Misurugi empire.]]
* {{Tsundere}}: Starts off incredibly harsh towards Ange until they complete their escape. Also shows her soft side when hoping to reunite with her mother back in Enderant Union.
* UsedToBeASweetKid: As a little girl, Hilda loved nothing more than climbing the apple tree in her back yard and her mom's homemade apple pie.
* VitriolicBestBuds: Despite her involvement in Ange's early series hazing, and Ange herself trying to screw Hilda over from their escape attempt, they eventually become very close, despite occasional (though good natured) sniping. Rosalie suggests Hilda wants to be much more than friends with Ange, which Hilda herself admits to Ange directly in the first half of "Distorted World". Ange, to her surprise and delight, reciprocates.
* WeakButSkilled: She's one of the best pilots on the team. Being stuck in a standard (if upgraded) Para-mail doesn't stop her from staving off blows from Chris in a Ragna-mail.
* YouAreInCommandNow:
** Appointed temporary commander of First Troop in "The Right Arm's Past", while Salia's in the lockup for disobeying orders from command, because [[spoiler:she's the only remaining Para-mail pilot with command experience]].
** Ends up as leader of the Aurora after Jill gives it to her after she was forced to step down in "God's Soul-Searching".

The youngest pilot of the squad and an extremely cheerful girl, Vivian is one of the first pilots that Ange befriends in the series. Pilot of the AW-[=GSX232=] Razor. However, there's more to it than what she appears to be.
----
* AcePilot: The young ace with extraordinary displays of technique in battle. Acknowledged in "Conclusive Ocean" much to Rosalie's shock. Also noted out of universe to be the best pilot of the squad.
* BattleBoomerang: One of her weapons she bought from Arzenal is a boomerang.
* BigDamnHeroes: Gets one in "Dark Angel of Destruction" where [[spoiler: Villkiss is captured by Salia, Ersha, and Chris. Coming out of nowhere, she blows up one of the cables to free Ange by ''free-falling'' towards it.]]

* CatchPhrase: She asks questions beginning with a word relating to a "pop quiz" or "quiz".
* ChronicallyKilledActor: This is frequently lampshaded by Kuwashima and fans and Vivian has had so many brushes with death that it's becoming a RunningGag. [[spoiler: Subverted since she survived to the shock of many fans.]]
* CuteLittleFang: Vivian sports one of these, adding to her mischievous demeanor.

* {{Foreshadowing}}: Before [[spoiler:her OneWingedAngel reveal]], Vivian could feel that there was something wrong with the situation by smelling and the fact that she feels all tingly when the crew encounters the encounters the "virgin DRAGON" in "Salia's Gloom". At the end of "Dragon Song", during Jill and Maggy's discussion about [[spoiler:Arzenal's plant was destroyed,]] Vivian's face is up close hinting something about her. There's also the fact that Vivian thinks that Ange's song is beautiful in a different way. The only ones who have the same reaction as her are [[spoiler:the [=DRAGONs=] in "Dragon Song".]]
* FriendshipTrinket: She gives one to Ange though Ange at first refused to accept it; she however receives it gratefully in the end.
* GenkiGirl: One of the most cheerful characters of the show.
* GiantRobotHandsSaveLives: She makes the diving save to catch Tusk's hoverboard when [[spoiler: Chris nicks it with the wire spear.]]
* HairDecorations: Her braid is tied with a band with two little green baubles, as seen in the picture above.
* HunterOfHisOwnKind: [[spoiler:Something she didn't know until she stopped having her lollipop and found out she's actually a DRAGON named Mii.]]
* InvoluntaryShapeshifting: Evidently needs inhibitors to prevent her from [[spoiler:transforming into a dragon. And now that the plant's been destroyed...]]
* NiceGirl: While many of her teammates are either ruthless, [[{{Tsundere}} cold]], and [[AntiHero antiheroic]]. Vivian is consistently one of the nicest and friendliest girls in her team.
* OlderThanTheyLook: She's fifteen years old but looks like Coco or Miranda's age.
* OneWingedAngel: A heroic example. She can transform into a [[spoiler:dragon called Mii]]. However, when she [[spoiler:returns to her homeworld, she gets an injection and is no longer able to transform into a dragon]].
* OralFixation: Never seen without a lollipop in her mouth. At first. [[spoiler:After returning from the other world, and the injection she received there, it's mentioned offhandedly that she doesn't need the lollipops to maintain her human form anymore, solving the mystery.]]
* TheReveal: By the time of "The Right Arm's Past", [[spoiler:she is revealed to be a dragon all along]].
* RedOniBlueOni: Red oni to Salia's blue who is also her roommate.
* RoseHairedSweetie: Of ThePollyanna-variant.
* SpiderSense: Before the "virgin DRAGON" unleashed its GravitySucks move, she sensed that there was something wrong with it and that her hair was tingling.
* SupernaturalGoldEyes: [[spoiler:"The Right Arm's Past" reveals that she is a DRAGON.]]
* TakingTheBullet: [[spoiler:The preview for "The Tuner of Time" reveals that she takes a hit for Tusk. Whether she survives or not is a different story.]]
* TokenMiniMoe: The shortest and youngest pilot of the squadron.
* TomatoInTheMirror: [[spoiler:It turns out that she is Mii, a DRAGON from their world]]. Vivian is understandably shocked to realize this.
* WalkingSpoiler: It's hard to talk about the second half of the series without revealing the fact that [[spoiler:she's Mii]].
* WhamLine: How she discovers that [[spoiler:she is a DRAGON all along]] during the finale of "Her Right Arm's Past".
* WhoWearsShortShorts: Her Arzenal uniform is this.
* TheWorfEffect: Has had her Para-mail taken out of commission on at least one occasion. Justified, as it's a GlassCannon.

The eldest member of the Salia squad and is also a chef of Arzenal. Pilot of the [=AW-ZZR520=] Hauser Ersha Custom.

* BridgeBunny: [[spoiler:She gets demoted to this role when she comes back to the Aurora.]]
* CoolBigSis: Plays this role with the crew.
* DissonantSerenity: [[spoiler:When she's on Embryo's side, she acts as calmly when antagonistic towards Ange and her comrades.]]
* DrivenToVillainy: The destruction of Arzenal and her seeking Embryo to resurrect the Norma children drive her to become one of the Diamond Rose Knights.
* FaceHeelTurn: [[spoiler:She sides with Embryo, but it doesn't last long.]]
* FeminineWomenCanCook: Works as a chef in the mess hall in addition to her piloting duties.
* GagBoobs: Is the bustiest member of the squad, much to [[ACupAngst Salia's annoyance]].
* HeelFaceTurn: [[spoiler:After the kids die a second time and Embryo refuses to revive them as he does not want them in the new world, plus giving her an invisible NeckLift, she defects with the Ragna-mail that she pilots.]]
* HeelRealization: In "Necessary", [[spoiler:when she realizes that Embryo had been manipulating her since the second she met him and couldn't have cared less about the children she betrayed her comrades for, she calls herself "an empty shell and a pushover."]]
* MamaBear: She is very protective of the young Norma children. [[spoiler:Ersha makes this clear in no uncertain terms she will maul Ange if she threatens the peace and safety Embryo can provide for them. When it becomes clear that Embryo used them to manipulate her, she turns on him]].
* MidSeasonUpgrade: From her Hauser to the [[spoiler:[=EM-CBX003=] Reijia given to her by Embryo. Then subverted when she returns to her Hauser as Jill takes the Reijia to assist Ange and Co.]]

!! Rosalie
->'''Voiced by''': Creator/KaoriIshihara (Japanese), Margaret Lewis (English)
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rosalie_9565.png]]
One of Zola's former lovers before she died, she wants to avenge the death of her beloved captain by attempting to kill Ange. Pilot of AW-[=CBR115=] Glaive Rosalie Custom.
----

* AnguishedDeclarationOfLove: Gives a major one to Chris [[spoiler:in "Eve of Destruction", while doing a CooldownHug in freefall]].
* BerserkerTears: When [[spoiler:Chris is shot in the head in "Arzenal Burns" during takeoff]], she completely loses it.
* BetaBitch: Has always had this kind of dynamic regardless of who she's following, though she's become progressively less malicious.
* TheBully: Along with Hilda and Chris, she attempts to bully Ange, but her attempts backfire ''big time''.
* ButNotTooGay: In ''VideoGame/SuperRobotWarsV'', she and Chris become obsessed with [[Anime/MobileSuitGundamSeed Athrun]]. Since he's a ChickMagnet, this comes as no surprise to anyone.
* ButtMonkey: She gets the crap kicked out of her when she tries to bully Ange in "Lonely Mutiny". She gets her uniform damaged by Ange, is beaten up while in the canteen, uses the restroom when Ange puts her laxative back in her mouth, and Ersha beats the crap out of her and Chris.
* CleavageWindow: Wears her standard uniform top open.
* CooldownHug: Gives one to Chris (in freefall!) after the latter has gone off the deep end following Embryo's betrayal.
* DudeWheresMyRespect: Isn't amused that the three girls she trained prefer to praise Vivian more than her.
* {{Greed}}: Always tries to earn or win as much money as possible, regardless if it means more work and greater risk to her life.
* LaxativePrank: Attempts this on Ange in "Lonely Mutiny" as payback for Zola's death.
* LoveEpiphany: Rosalie realizes that she is in love with [[spoiler:Chris after Chris [[FaceHeelTurn goes over to Embryo's side]]. She tells Hilda that she had always felt that Chris needed her, but seeing her as a scarily effective fighter for Embryo made her realize that she was actually [[LivingEmotionalCrutch dependent on Chris]], not the other way around]].
* MostCommonSuperpower: Has the second largest rack after Ersha as well as the largest relative to body size.
* PottyEmergency: After being forced to drink the laxative water she prepared for Ange, she immediately rushes towards the bathroom.
* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: She goes into one after Chris is shot and apparently killed in "Arzenal Burns". [[spoiler:"God's Soul-Searching" ironically sees her trying to do this against Chris herself for killing one of the new recruits under her wing; however, Vivian stops her before she does it.]]
* ShoulderCannon: Mounted onto her Para-mail.
* SergeantRock: According to her, she did this to the new recruits so they can survive. They are noted to have helped save them from the Diamond Rose Knights and their Ragna-mail while Ange was in the True Earth. She's absolutely crushed when her best friend turned enemy Chris kills one of those recruits, Marika, and swears to avenge the latter.
* SexForSolace: It seems like this is what she was proposing to Hilda [[spoiler:after Ange is captured by Embryo, and they have another run in with post-FaceHeelTurn Chris. Rosalie comes on to Hilda, since it's "been a while" for both of them, but when Hilda turns her down, she recognizes that it's because Hilda is in love with Ange, at which point she tearfully admits her feelings for Chris]].
* TakingYouWithMe: [[spoiler:She attempts to do take Chris down with her at the end of "Eve of Destruction", but it doesn't work out as Hilda is able to rescue them]].
* ThoseTwoGuys: Female example, has this dynamic with Chris. [[spoiler:She's very devastated when Chris sides with Embryo and no longer considers Chris her friend especially after shooting at her and killing one of her new comrades.]]

Chris is of Zola's former lovers before she died. She wants to avenge the death of her beloved captain by attempting to kill Ange. Pilot of the AW-[=ZZR520=] Hauser Chris Custom.
----
* AxCrazy: Chris goes ''absolutely nuts'' shooting with her Ragna-mail when [[spoiler:Embryo]] ditches her towards the end of the series. She gets better.
* BecameTheirOwnAntithesis: She is a shy, fearful girl who did only join the para-mail riders for Rosalie's sake, but near-death and deception turn her into [[spoiler:Embryo's most vicious Ragna-mail rider]]. After being [[spoiler:abandoned by Embryo]], she finally snaps.
* BerserkerTears: Once [[spoiler:Embryo]] turns on her, she bursts into tears and screams for everyone to die.
* BoomHeadshot: [[spoiler:Killed by stray fire. If Embryo wasn't there, she'd be long dead.]]
* BraidsOfAction: Downplayed. She is the least action-focused member of a team of {{Action Girl}}s and is protected by others, usually Rosalie.
* TheBrute: Becomes the most violent and aggressive of the Diamond Rose Knights.
* ButNotTooGay: In ''VideoGame/SuperRobotWarsV'', she and Rosalie have absolute crushes on [[Anime/MobileSuitGundamSeed Athrun]]. [[ChickMagnet Not that it's any surprise to anyone]].
* TheChick: Shares this role with Ersha in the squad.
* DisproportionateRetribution: Felt herself excluded by her friends in her youth. So she decides to side with their worst enemy and fight them to the death and kill everybody they care about. [[PoorCommunicationKills Hilda and Rosalie had no idea that she felt that way]], mind you.
* DrivenToVillainy: Embryo, on top of saving her life, had fed her issues of resentment and fear of abandonment regarding Hilda and Rosalie, making her hate and desire to kill them, and gave her the attention she desired for so long. All of this, combined with the Ragna-mail he grants her to help destroy the people she felt abandoned her, earns him her allegiance.
* EmoTeen: Hilda calls her a "morbid little freak" in "Eve of Destruction" when [[spoiler:she goes on a brutal rampage]].
* FaceHeelTurn: [[spoiler:She sides with Embryo after Arzenal is attacked. It doesn't last long, however.]]
* FallenHero: She was a beloved soldier in Arzenal before [[spoiler:Embryo made her one of the Diamond Rose Knights, along with Salia and Ersha. She gets better by the final episodes of the series]].
* FreakOut: After [[spoiler:Embryo abandons her]] in "Eve of Destruction", she starts going all-out on [[spoiler:any [=DRAGON=] near her out of fear of dying.]]
* GamerChick: [[spoiler:Clips of her during her time as one of Embryo's knights portray her as this.]]
* GoMadFromTheRevelation: Once [[spoiler:Embryo]] abandons her, she goes insane to the point that she [[spoiler:attempts to kill everyone in sight]].
* HeelFaceTurn: [[spoiler:After being abandoned by Embryo, Rosalie telling her that she loves her and can't live without her, and Hilda saving her from crashing into the ground--all after Chris had just tried to kill both of them--finally convinces her just how badly she screwed up.]]
* HeroKiller: [[spoiler:Granted she was a very minor character, but she gets the honor of killing the first named Norma pilot, Marika, in almost 20 episodes.]]
* HiddenDepths: [[spoiler:Underneath that shy exterior is a jealous and envious woman who's trying to make ends meet despite getting the short end of the stick.]]
* HorribleJudgeOfCharacter: Chalk it up to ignorance, but she believes Embryo risked his life to save her. Yes, the same Embryo that can be multiple places at once and can't die.
* IOweYouMyLife: [[spoiler:Sides with Embryo after being saved from certain death.]]
* IronicEcho: In "The Survivors", she throws Ange's PreAsskickingOneLiner in Hilda's face.
* {{Irony}}: Her fear of death, which nearly comes true in "Arzenal Burns". [[spoiler:And later in "The Survivors", she kills Marika, who had a similar fear of death. Compounding the irony further, Rosalie flipped out on both occasions, the former on behalf of Chris and the latter because of Chris.]]
* MidSeasonUpgrade: From her Hauser to the [[spoiler:[=EM-CBX004=] Teodora given to her by Embryo.]]
* MortalityPhobia: Most evident when within moments from being crushed by the gravity field a new DRAGON deployed, and especially during the Arzenal massacre.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: After being brought back to the side of good by Rosalie.
* NeverMyFault: Under Embryo's influence, Chris doesn't acknowledge that it's her own actions that caused [[spoiler:Marika's death; she deemed her too subservient to Hilda and Rosalie]]. She later regrets this after [[spoiler:Rosalie brings her back just in time for "Beyond Time".]]
* NightmareFace: She makes one [[spoiler:shortly after Embryo abandons her]].
* OhCrap: She understandably freezes in shock when [[spoiler:Embryo abandons her]] before going on a murderous rampage.
* OnlyMostlyDead: [[spoiler:She'd be dead, but Embryo completely heals her right before it happens.]]
* PeekABangs: Her left eye is usually covered by her hair.
* PleaseDontLeaveMe: After their falling out with Hilda, Chris and Rosalie sleep together, during which Chris begs Rosalie not to abandon her as well. This informs her later [[spoiler:HeroicBSOD and subsequent FaceHeelTurn when she thought Rosalie (and Hilda, to some extent) left her for dead. She's pulled out of it and returns to their side following Rosalie's AnguishedDeclarationOfLove, where she says she can't live without her]].
* TheQuietOne: Between her, Hilda, and Rosalie, she's the quiet one of the three.
* ReiAyanamiExpy: Her hair colour and shape is almost identical to [[Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion Rei Ayanami]], she's TheQuietOne. She also at first has UndyingLoyalty to Embryo the main antagonist of the series and is friends with a HotBlooded red haired {{Tsundere}}.
* TheResenter: What she tells both Hilda and Rosalie on [[spoiler:why she's sided with Embryo was because she's always left out between the three of them.]]
* SanitySlippage: Her involvement with Embryo takes a toll on her well-being. So towards the end of the series, [[spoiler:Embryo abandons her, causing Chris to finally go berserk and fire away at everything. After she is rescued by Rosalie, Chris regains enough of her sanity to realize what she's done]].
* ShoulderCannon: Mounted onto her Para-mail.
* ShrinkingViolet: Noted to be shy and reserved. {{Deconstructed|Trope}} when it turns out that [[spoiler:she has a lot of issues that she can't spit out for fear of retaliation until she goes to Embryo where she finally gets it off her chest.]]
* ShyBlueHairedGirl: Has elements of this.
* SpitefulSpit: Spits on Hilda's face as a sign that she no longer has any love for Hilda. Didn't help the fact that Hilda has claimed that she used them as nothing more than pawns.
%%* TheThreeFacesOfEve: The child.
* ThoseTwoGirls: Female example, has this dynamic with Rosalie.
* ThrowingYourSwordAlwaysWorks: In "The Survivors", she [[spoiler:kills Marika after she interfered by throwing the sword of her Ragna-mail at her.]]
* UnskilledButStrong: She's not the strongest one on the team, but her post-FaceHeelTurn upgrade to Ragna-mail instantaneously turns her into a major threat against her former squadmates. The comparatively underequipped but more skilled Hilda still manages to go blow for blow when they fight in "The Survivors".
* UnwittingPawn: To Embryo. She didn't realize Embryo's true colors until he screws her and the Diamond Rose Knights over and [[spoiler:completely ''snaps'' at the revelation]].
* WeUsedToBeFriends: Her reaction to Hilda when [[spoiler:Hilda confesses to them in "Goodbye From the Gallows" that she just used them]]. [[spoiler:After she joins Embryo, she thinks Hilda and Rosalie abandoned her, though to be fair, they saw her get shot in the head, her rider crashing and exploding on the runway (if not for Embryo's instant healing, she would have died), and went on a subsequent RoaringRampageOfRevenge.]]
* WhoWearsShortShorts: Chris often wears very short shorts with her uniforms.
* WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds: Rosalie is sad over resigning herself to trying to kill her for the murder of Marika, as she knows how Embryo corrupted Chris after their failure to save her first. Chris's pathos is most evident in "Eve of Destruction" when Embryo abandons her in the middle of a dragon fleet, when the ominous sight of one of them ready to kill her causes her to snap and begin firing away at ''everything'', as she feels completely abandoned. Luckily, she is saved by both Hilda and Rosalie.
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: Light blue in her case.
* YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness: In the final episodes of ''Cross Ange'', [[spoiler:Embryo abandons her along with the rest of the Diamond Rose Knights, and Chris ''absolutely loses it'']].
* YouthfulFreckles: She has a few of them on her face, but not exactly accentuated due to her PeekABangs. Gets a bit more exposure after ditching the hairstyle [[spoiler:as one of Embryo's knights]].

Zola is the captain of the First Troop at Arzenal and pilots the [=AW-FZR304=]. She dies in "Villkiss Awakens" during Ange's disastrous first employment due to the latter's interference.
----
* AnythingThatMoves: She had her own harem.
* AttemptedRape: Approaches Ange very forcibly, despite Ange making it perfectly clear that she doesn't want it.
* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: She is the captain of Arzenal's First Group who can kick major ass.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: Hedonistic to ridiculous degrees, but extremely capable as a captain.
* CruelAndUnusualDeath: Dies in the wreckage of Ange's failed first deployment with blood pouring from her missing eye socket.
* TheDeadHaveNames: Reassigned her full name upon her death, prominently displayed on her tombstone.
* DroppedABridgeOnHer: She's unceremoniously killed during Ange's failed first deployment.
* DueToTheDead: Hilda throws her artificial eye into the water and Zola's given a proper burial on Arzenal.
* ElectronicEyes: One of her eyes is artificial.
* HiddenDepths: Despite her womanizing, Jasmine revealed at her funeral that Zola was a disciplined soldier and always looked out for those under her command.
* InformedFlaw: Jasmine knows that Zola is impulsive. Unfortunately, it's also her FatalFlaw.
* KilledOffscreen: In the PS Vita game, only the wreckage of her para-mail is shown.
* LaserGuidedKarma: Had she focused more on teaching Ange to fight [=DRAGONs=] than trying to get into Ange's pants (consent be damned), chances are Ange would have had a better showing and Zola ''might'' have lived through it.
* MauveShirt: Zola dies exactly one episode after being introduced, and serves as the basis of motivation of her posse's grudge against Ange.
* MentorOccupationalHazard: She did lecture Ange one time and was a good mentor for the other girls in her squad. Unfortunately for her, she dies after Ange's failed first deployment.
* AMotherToHerMen: She cared deeply about her subordinates.
* PrisonRape: Alluded to at the very least with her.
* PurpleIsPowerful: Subverted. She was the then-captain of the First Troop and wore a purple rider suit, but ends up as SacrificialLamb.
* SacrificialLion: One of the best captains of Arzenal (and may know a thing or two about Libertas) but bites the dust very early in the series.
* SergeantRock: She mobs new recruits in order to prepare them for the harshness of life in Arzenal.
* SerialRapist: It's very strongly implied in the second episode, even before her assault on Ange, that she made a habit of taking sexual advantage of her subordinates. Later confirmed when Hilda tells Ange that [[QuestionableConsent she basically went along to get along]].
* ATragedyOfImpulsiveness: Zola's impatience ends up doing her and her squad in.
* WeHardlyKnewYe: We only got to see her character for two and a half episodes before she bit the dust.
