* AdaptationDeviation: And. How. From the beginning, Edwin sympathizes with him, but also chastises him for his immaturity. And it leads to a lot more trouble than occurred in canon. Notable examples include him [[spoiler:gambling away an opportunity at the money to save his sister just to try humiliating Kaiba]], ending any possible attraction between him and Mai by taking out his anger at that against Edwin when the latter chastises him for it, and [[spoiler:losing against Edwin in the finals even with Edwin actively trying to convincingly throw the match]]. A bit more humble, he continues training with Solomon after Duelist Kingdom, and he grows a bit more in Battle City, actually winning his stolen Red-Eyes Black Dragon back himself, and then returning the Time Wizard that Yugi gave him as proof of growing beyond who he used to be. He wins his way to the finals with his Red-Eyes Deck, but still ends up forced to face Yugi with [[spoiler:Serenity and Solomon]]'s lives on the line depending on who wins, which so traumatizes him that he gives up the Red-Eyes Deck, causing Solomon to give him the Poker Knights[[note]]Three Musketeers of Face Cards[[/note]] Deck that he'd been training with. But [[spoiler:a lack of practice with it leads him to use a Zombie Deck he won from the Rare Hunter instead, which fails against Wight user Brom Bones and leads to him losing in the first round of the finals for a second time]]. And after that, at his lowest point, [[spoiler:Selene poses as Mai to trick him into attacking Edwin, getting him locked up]]. Fortunately, WordOfGod confirms that that's rock bottom for him, leaving him nowhere to go but up, starting with using the Poker Knights Deck to win against [[spoiler:Nezbitt of the Big Five in the Virtual World]].

* KnowWhenToFoldEm: When Edwin outwits ArmsDealer: It means less than it usually does since [=KaibaCorp=] was a military company before Seto took over, but Nezbitt makes it perfectly clear just how involved he was in the old business.
* BaitAndSwitch: Played with when he puts up a facade of calling Joey to a court date to deceive

But not only was Joey not using a Red-Eyes deck himself anymore, he still knew all the ins and outs of it, allowing him to predict Nezbitt's champion's every move and overcome her.

* MagnificentBastard: In canon, he was this pre-HeelFaceTurn. In this story, it's greatly downplayed thanks to Edwin using his future knowledge and ruthless practicality to outplay him at every turn. But even after losing his Millennium Eye, even after largely retiring, even after refocusing on becoming the man that Cecelia loved, he hasn't forgotten how to utterly destroy someone psychologically. Shown best in Chapter 120, where with words alone, he shakes Noah to the point that he and Serenity go from being chased by Elmer Fudd and his shotgun to a limousine ride directly to his Duel with Leichter of the Big Five.

** It is the lowest of low bars to clear, but Noah is unable to argue in Chapter 120 when Pegasus suggests that not even Gozaburo would ever attempt to score a cheap victory over a defenseless child, which nullifies any consideration of Dueling Serenity for her body.

* ArmsDealer: It means less than it usually does since [=KaibaCorp=] was a military company before Seto took over, but Nezbitt makes it perfectly clear just how involved he was in the old business.
* EntertaininglyWrong: He gives Joey entirely too much credit, initially trying to bluff him into thinking he's facing Johnson, and later reconsidering falling for his trash talk due to thinking he was trying to get him to let his guard down. In reality, Joey wouldn't know one member of the Big Five from any other and was just speaking from the heart. He's smart enough to realize that Nezbitt is reading far too much into things.
* NeverMyFault: Nezbitt denies any responsibility for what people did with the weapons he provided, seemingly believing himself innocent since he's never the one who pulls the trigger.
* TechnoWizard: Nezbitt is the one who created the Virtual World, designing everything from the gravity and physics to the biology and emotional responses of human programs. It comes to light that he was sourest about the company's redirection because it meant that his software, which had been meant to perfectly demonstrate the effectiveness of weapons without real-world testing, was repurposed as a child's plaything.
