* PhysicalGod: The Leviathan was worshipped as a dark oceanic deity by the indigenous people who settled on Darkwater in the 14th century, ultimately driving them to sacrifice themselves to it. Its worship was then picked up by Reverend John Wyckwood three centuries later, leading him and his flock to the same fate. Even being slain during the Miraculous Catch didn't stop it from exerting its will upon the cultists.

* KrakenAndLeviathan: Fitzroy dubbed it "Leviathan" after the Biblical sea-monster, and it is a massive cephalopod-like creature with a fanged maw surrounded by squid-like tentacles, four shark-like pectoral fins, and a tail that in cave artwork resembles that of a shark but resembles that of an ancient fish when it appears before Piece.

* EldritchAbomination: The Leviathan is a Star Spawn that serves as the a conduit between the Great Old Ones -- namely Cthulhu -- and humanity. While its physical body was killed during the "Miraculous Catch," it continues to exert its will on the inhabitants of Darkwater in the form of nightmares, and merely being in its presence causes people to lose their minds.

* TheAlcoholic: He constantly drinks as a way to suppress his nightmares. Although this can be an InformedFlaw if the player chooses to stay sober.

* BitchInSheepsClothing: Captain Fitzroy is the unofficial leader of the island and comes across as a ReasonableAuthorityFigure, in contrast to the antagonistic crime lord Cat Baker.
