The main character and player character of the first three games, and the eponymous character of Boktai 2. Django is the last of the Solar Children, and current wielder of the Gun Del Sol, which he inherited from his father, Red Ringo, the greatest vampire hunter. Django tries to follow his father's footsteps as a vampire hunter. Django is usually accompanied by his friend and mentor, Master Otenko, and he drags around a coffin, used to transport vampires after he has defeated them.

He is named after Film/{{Django}} from the film of the same name.

* AnimeHair: While not as noticeable in the first two games, Django's hairstyle is rather spiky in a manner not dissimilar to a Anime/YuGiOh protagonist. Official art, the third game, and the Battle Network crossovers help convey this much better.

* TheGunslinger: In the first game, his sole weapon is the Gun Del sol. In the sequel, it gets stolen within the first few minutes of gameplay, forcing him to learn how to defend himself with swords, spears, hammers and his own bare fists.
* HeroicMime: Seems like this at first, but actually [[AvertedTrope averted]], as he usually has a few things to say at the end of 1 and 2. He also speaks regularly in 3, and in the crossover scenarios of ''VideoGame/MegaManBattleNetwork 4'' and ''6''.
* HeroicWillpower: Firm believer in this. Sabata even thinks it's his strongest trait. [[spoiler:It's implied that this is how he got his solar power back after being vampirized.]]
* TheImmune: His dual heritage makes him near-immune to the power of the undead. For normal people, the mere touch of Kloroflun would transform them into an undead monster. For Django, it's only a very minor bit of damage he can easily recover from. [[spoiler: It took the power of a being of pure darkness to overwhelm his resistance and turn him in ''2'', and even that only partially worked.]]

* MixAndMatchWeapon: One of the main combat gimmicks in ''1'' and ''3'' is the ability to customize the Gun Del Sol, giving it different attack types and elemental attributes. It isn't present in ''2'' because the gun was stolen and broken.
* MoneyDumb: Potentially with Dark Loans, depending on player choices. Otenko even cautions him about not following in his father's footsteps.
* MultiMeleeMaster: Gets several types of melee weapons in ''2'' because of said theft. He retains both ranged- and melee-based fighting styles in ''3''.
* NotQuiteDead: In the beginning of Boktai 3. He was presumed dead, but [[spoiler: his vampire blood]] helped to save him. He was still stuck underground though, only broken out by [[spoiler:[[SpannerInTheWorks Trinity falling from the sky.]]]]

The Messenger of the Sun who aids Django on his quest. Resembles a sunflower with eyes and a long nose.

* AdaptationNameChange: He is inexplicably called Toasty in the English release of ''Lunar Knights'', despite all previous games addressing him by his original Japanese name.
* AnthropomorphicPersonification: He's the emissary of the Sun and embodiment of its will.
* AstonishinglyAppropriateAppearance: He is the embodiment of the Sun's will. He is in the shape of a sunflower that resembles the Sun itself more closely.
* CompleteImmortality: He cannot be killed. If his physical body is destroyed, he'll just generate a new one. The only way to get rid of him is to seal his spirit in another being.
* ExpositionFairy: His main role in the games. This results in Django looking like a silent protagonist at first glance.
* GagNose: He has a pretty long nose. A comment from Otenko in the ''Boktai 1'' results website if you get the Berserker Rank [[note]]'Stop pulling my mouth!'[[/note]] implies that his nose is actually a mouth.
* LightEmUp: Played With: though he cannot fight, he is still the Messenger of the Sun and the embodiment of the Will of the Sun.
* LightIsGood: He is the embodiment of the will of the Sun and wants the Sun to shine in people's hearts. He supports the protagonist and life itself.
* LikeCannotCutLike: Being the Messenger of the Sun and the embodiment of the Sun's will, the Gun Del Sol cannot hurt him. Solar shots would only make him grow. Shots of any other element only make him change color.
* MakeMyMonsterGrow: [[DownplayedTrope Downplayed:]] Shooting him with a Solar shot from the Gun Del Sol only makes him grow up to twice his rather tiny size, and he turns back to normal once the shot disappears.
* NonActionGuy: He outright says in ''Boktai 1'' that he cannot fight.

[[folder:Dark Boy Sabata]]

Django's twin brother, and current owner of the Gun Del Hell. While Django draws power from the Sun, Sabata is aligned to the Darkness. He is a major antagonist in the first and third games, and is also playable in the second and last ones for some brief segments.

* ArchnemesisDad: Archnemesis ''aunt'', to be precise. She kidnapped Sabata and raised him to be a ruthless killer. He takes revenge on her at the end of the first game.
* BrainwashedAndCrazy: He becomes Ratatosk's puppet in the third game.
* CastingAShadow: As a fellow Solar and Lunar Child descendant, he should be able to use any element, as his brother does. Unfortunately for him, Hel's experiments destroyed his ability to properly use anything but Dark.
* DarkIsNotEvil: Despite his power over darkness, his weapon being called the Gun Del Hell, and his somewhat demonic appearance, Sabata is not evil. His antagonistic roles are always due to the influence of another, far more menacing being.
* DarkMagicalGirl: Raised by his abusive, demonic aunt, infused with the power of Dark Matter and trained to murder his own brother.
* TheDragon: Works as Hel's main lackey in the first game.
* FusionDance: Fuses with the Beast of destruction in the third game. Django must finish the battle without injuring his brother to attain the best ending.
* HeelFaceRevolvingDoor: Starts out an antagonist, but becomes an ally at the very end of the first game and is unambiguously heroic in the second one. Then Ratatosk decides to make him the vessel of Vanargand and he becomes far more evil than he ever was.
* HeroicSacrifice: Sabata willingly operates the Piledriver in the second game to prevent Django from becoming a vampire, knowing full well it could kill him. Fortunately, he survives, but suffers severe wounds.
* MoneyDumb: Sabata is shown to have been in debt to Dark Loans at least once in the first entry, with even Otenko remarking in pity.
* MyGreatestFailure: He never stops blaming himself for being unable to save his parents or Carmilla.
* TheSacredDarkness: He eventually succeeded his mother as the Moon Beauty.
* SpectacularSpinning: The Gun Del Hell's charge shot lets him spin in place while a wave of red and dark energy circles around him.
* StarCrossedLovers: One of his main motivations is to find a way to save Carmilla from her dark fate so that he and she can finally be together. Unfortunately, circumstances always seem to prevent him from accomplishing this goal.
* TogetherInDeath: Should the player injure Sabata even only once during the final battle in ''3'', he will die and join Carmilla inside Vanargand.
* YinYangBomb: Like his brother, he has a natural inclination to this. Unfortunately, Aunty Hel's experiments all but destroyed his ability to use the Solar potion of heritage and limited his Lunar abilities significantly. While he is still technically able to activate his Sol powers, attempting to invoke them would be near-fatal to him.
* WeakenedByTheLight: As his body is imbued by the power of Dark Matter, Sabata takes continuous damage from exposure to sunlight. Even with the best magical protection available to non-Immortals, Sabata nearly dies when he tries to use the Piledriver to purify Django in the second game.

A powerful Immortal, and the one whom Django blames for the death of his father. No matter how many times he is beaten, he always seems to find a way to return.

* AnimeHair: His hair looks like a pair of horns.
* ArchEnemy: He's Django's longest lasting opponent and responsible for much of the tragedy in his life. He was previously this to Ringo before eventually defeating him.
* BadassArmfold: His default stance mixes this and PowerFloats for intimating effect.
* BloodMagic: He pulls this off in the third game to great effect, making it literally ''rain blood'' to deal constant damage to Django.
* BloodKnight: He seems to really enjoy fighting Django, declaring himself to be his eternal rival, destined to come back again and again to battle him.
* BossArenaIdiocy: For reasons unknown, in the first game he decides to fight in a room with an open skylight, which can be exploited to damage and stun him. However, in the second battle he will quickly [[TaughtByExperience float around them]] instead.
* ClassicalMovieVampire: He's the most traditional of all the vampires in the series. He's aristocratic, wears a high collared black suit with a cape, stays in a dark castle filled with undead minions, used blood and bats for attacks, drains blood by biting his victim's necks, and is one of the only humanoid Immortals that does not change into a monstrous form for battle. In a world full of [[OurVampiresAreDifferent extremely strange "vampires"]], he stands out for being so classic, yet still always being powerful to be one of the main threats every time he appears.
* ClothingDamage: He loses his cape once he takes enough damage in the first game.
* CoDragons: He and Sabata are Hel's most trusted minions in the first game.
* DaywalkingVampire: In the third game, [[spoiler: He drains enough power from the Ancient Solar Tree to remove his vulnerability to sunlight uses this new power to handily defeat Django. It takes Django getting his own power-up from the Ancient Solar Tree and Otenko to overwhelm him after that.]]
* DefectingForLove: Dainn claims the Count betrayed his faction because he fell in love with Hel.
* DishingOutDirt: He is the Immortal of Earth, after all. One of his attacks involves raising bloody spikes from the ground to impale his opponents from below.
* DragonTheirFeet: Subverted and played straight. The Count does die before Hel- twice! But he returns afterward anyway to fight Django.
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: He truly does love Hel. He was actually sent by Dainn to spy on Hel, but he fell in love with her anyways.
* EvilLaugh: He lets one out whenever he appears.
* FromASingleCell: Of a sort- as long as any of his bats survive, he can regenerate. Presumably he's pretty careful about leaving extra lives for himself.
* GreaterScopeVillain: He is implied to be the one who gave [=ShadeMan=] a physical body in the second game.
* HeroKiller: He was the one who defeated [[spoiler: and turned]] Ringo before the first game.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: In the first game, you can blast his floating swords back at him, and his charge attack can be used to burn him with the skylights.
* HorrorHunger: As a vampire, he does suck blood, and will be glad to demonstrate the fact when you fight him, because...
* LifeDrain: If he manages to grab Django he will bite him, healing himself.
* MonsterProgenitor: He can turn other people into Immortals, such as [[spoiler: Carmilla and Ringo]].
* NoNameGiven: We only ever know him as "The Count", which is more a title than anything.
* PowerFloats: How he moves around in battle.
* SummonMagic: Can summon levitating swords and spiders in the first game.
* StarterVillain: He's the first boss in the series, though don't think that's the last [[WhyWontYouDie you'll see of him.]]
* TheMole: He was originally supposed to spy on Hel, but he developed a crush on her instead.
* VoluntaryShapeshifting: He can turn into a swarm of bats at will, which is actually how he avoids death.
* WeakenedByTheLight: It burns him, as you may expect. By the time of his last battle in the third game he absorbed enough power to [[DaywalkingVampire walk in sunlight unharmed]]. Django only defeated him by unlocking his [[SuperMode full potential]] to overwhelm him.
* WeWillMeetAgain: After every defeat, he promises to return to face his Django again.
* WhoWantsToLiveForever: If the diary Django finds in the first game is any indication, the Count finds his daily grind very boring. Fighting hunters, on the other hand, now that's a good time.
* WorthyOpponent: In their first battle, The Count dismisses Django as a child, but the second time he takes him seriously and refers to him by name. After that, he seems to relish any chance he gets to face Django again.

An Immortal who shares a close relationship with Sabata. She is an antagonist in the first game, but returns as an ally in the third.

* AllTheOtherReindeer: Carmilla was hated when she was human due to her powers. Being turned into an Immortal by the Count probably didn't help.
* AttackItsWeakPoint: The majority of her snake body is immune to damage, and she can only by harmed by attacking the rattle at one end or the female body at the other.
* BewareMyStingerTail: Not quite a stinger, but a rattle, which she uses as a bludgeon, both to whip Django and to try and smash him into the wall.
* BlowYouAway: She is the Immortal of wind, though this [[InformedAbility isn't really shown.]]
* BossArenaIdiocy: In order to capitalize on her TakenForGranite magic spells, Banshee's boss room is filled with mirrors to make the attacks snake around and ricochet dangerously, and she can turn them or even destroy them at will. Unfortunately, Django can ''also'' turn them, allowing him to seize control of the path of the spell.
* BreathWeapon: Fires petrifying blasts from her mouth.
* ForcedIntoEvil: She really has no choice but to fight Django--the only way that could be avoided is if Django doesn't attack her, as she points out.
* FlunkyBoss: Can call in cockatrices to help her.
* GameFace: As Banshee the Deathbringer, the humanoid part of her body is still gorgeous. However, when she fires her orbs of magic, she gets RedEyesTakeWarning and her face splits open like a snake.
* GorgeousGorgon: In her boss fight, Carmilla turns into an immense {{Lamia}} with slithering locks of hair and a [[SensibleHeroesSkimpyVillains sexed-up]] [[EvilCostumeSwitch new cut for her red dress]] and attacks with orb of magic that turn whatever they hit [[TakenForGranite to stone]]. This form is called [[SadlyMythtaken Banshee]] [[NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast the Deathbringer]].
* HeelFaceTurn: [[spoiler: She returns as a ghost in the third game and allies herself with Django]].
* HeroKiller: Kills Otenko, though it doesn't stick.
* HoistByTheirOwnPetard: The BossArenaIdiocy is meant to enable Django to reflect her TakenForGranite attacks back at her weak points. When beaten, she turns into stone and promptly crumbles.
* NotQuiteDead: [[spoiler: She returns in the third game as a ghostly ally.]]
* PaletteSwap: If you initiate her boss battle between the hours of midnight and 3:00 AM, Carmilla will appear with a blue dress and her monster body will be different shades of purple instead of blue and green.

* RedOniBlueOni: Inverted. Carmilla wears red and is sad and withdrawn, while friendly and outgoing Lita wears blue.
* SadlyMythtaken: Despite the name of her monster form, Carmilla is a mixture of Gorgon and Lamia monsters, and has nothing to do with the [[OurBansheesAreLouder shrieking banshees]].
* SealedEvilInADuel: [[spoiler: She willingly decides to remain sealed with Vangardr on the moon to prevent the beast from ever awakening again.]]
* StarCrossedLovers: With Sabata. The two apparently fell in love some time prior to the first game, but circumstances continue to keep them apart.
* TakenForGranite: Her attacks can petrify Django. She turns to stone herself when you slay her.
* TragicVillain: Demonized by people for her powers in life, transformed into an Immortal unwillingly, forced to serve Hel's evil schemes, killed by an enraged Django, and [[spoiler: eternally sealed with an undying horror]]. There's a reason her epitaph is the ''Crying'' Witch.
* VoluntaryShapeshifting: Can appear in her normal humanoid form or the monster form for battle.

The Queen of Darkness, who is the main antagonist of the first game.

* AbusiveParents: As the adoptive mother of Sabata, she raised the boy to be a ruthless and cold-blooded killer.
* AllYourPowersCombined: She can use the attacks of previous bosses during her first phase, including Fenrir's [[AnIcePerson ice breath]] and Muspell's [[PlayingWithFire meteor shower]].
* AnimeHair: Resembles four horns, although her true form hints that's what they actually are.
* BigBad: Of the original game.
* CainAndAbel: The cruel and greedy elder sister of the benevolent Moon Beauty, Mani. She was the one who killed her sister in attempt to steal her power for her plans to transform the world into her own undead kingdom.
* TheCorruption: Infuses Sabata with Dark Matter, granting him dark powers in exchange for vulnerability to sunlight.
* EvilUncle: Hel is the sister of Django's mother, yet she plots to kill him by twisting his brother into an agent of Darkness.
* GiantHandsOfDoom: Her main attack in her second form is slashing at the boys with her giant skeletal hands. All four of them must be temporarily destroyed with the Gun Del Sol in order to leave her head vulnerable.
* NoSell: Her second phase is immune to normal attacks, forcing Django and Sabata to combine their power into [[YinYangBomb charged shots]].
* LifeDrain: In her second phase her giant hands can grab Django or Sabata to bite them and heal herself.
* OneWingedAngel: Transforms into a gigantic horned skeletal beast after being hit with a solar-charged Otenko.

* BigBad: Of ''2'', though he is not the final boss. That honour goes to [[spoiler:the beast he was trying to awaken, Jormungandr]].
* CastingAShadow: The self-proclaimed Shadow Immortal can generate claws and orbs of darkness to attack.
* ClimaxBoss: He's the main antagonst of the second game and defeating him is big part of it [[spoiler: but by the time he's beaten, Jormungandr is already revealed as the biggest threat.]]
* ColorCodedForYourConvenience: Black Dainn-- He wears black.
* CreepyChild: He begins the second game in the form of a pale young boy and doesn't even pretend to act as anything less than the undead monster he is.
