* AdaptationExpansion: In the manga, both he and the demon that possessed him were not only defeated after Fujimoto exorcised him once, but they had NoNameGiven. In the anime, they showed up for a second round in episode 2 before [[spoiler: Satan possessed Fujimoto]].
* AdaptationalBadass: In the anime, he is explicitly stated to have been possessed by Astaroth, the Demon King of Rot.
* AdaptationalVillainy: In the manga, the birds he was torturing weren't shown in too much detail, but in the anime, he was shooting them with a crossbow. His retaliation against Rin in the manga was him trying to cut his hair with a knife. In the anime, he tried to brand Rin with a rod he dipped in fire.

* MoralityPet: Towards Izumo, though it took Paku a while to object to how Izumo badly was treating Shiemi, who only wanted to be friends.
* NiceGirl: Very much so, as she's the first person in Izumo's life to befriend her and is quite capable of looking past her [[{{Tsundere}} harsh exterior]].
* RomanticTwoGirlFriendship: With Izumo, but she happily ships her with Rin to Izumo's chagrin.
* SatelliteCharacter: Very little is known about her aside from her friendship with Izumo and is rarely seen without her.

* AdultFear: Your adopted child is the biological son of the most powerful demon in existence and if you let your guard down for even one minute said demon will possess you and use your body to literally drag him down to hell.
* AllLovingHero: Despite being a force to be reckoned with, he was more than willing to help anyone and anything that legitimately wanted to reform their ways, as exemplified by Kuro and Rin. In an interesting twist (anime-exclusive), [[spoiler: he only developed this attitude because of Yuri, their mother, dying for her belief that demons and humans could coexist, and was a full-blown KnightTemplar prior to this]].
* BadassGrandpa: Considering his age and the fact that he schools demons easily...
* BadassPreacher: The head father of his church, and was a former Paladin. Also the only character so far to have been a Meister in ''all five'' exorcist specialties.
* BigDamnHeroes: Shows up just in time to rescue Rin from the first demon he's ever encountered.
* CoolOldGuy: From what little we've seen of him he was definitely one of these. Rin even has him at the top of his "Cool Guys According To Me" list.
* DeathByOriginStory: In the first chapter/second episode, Satan uses DemonicPossession and takes over his body to tell Rin that he's the son of Satan. He fights him off but doesn't manage to live.
* DeceasedParentsAreTheBest: Of the sense that he was a great father to Rin and Yukio before he died.
* DyingMomentOfAwesome: He dies fighting off the strongest demon of Gehenna.
* GenerationXerox: In a flashback in the manga his personality is almost exactly like Rin's, just rougher. He also shows the same kind of Doctor skill Yukio has in the present.
* GiveHimANormalLife: Sealed away Rin's demonic powers and tried to hide his true nature to give him a normal life.
* GiverOfLameNames: Paladin and badass he was, he sucks at name giving. He gives a powerful black Cait Sith he gets as a familiar the name Kuro. [[spoiler: He also gave Shura her name because she gave the impression of being an Ashura.]]
* GoodShepherd: Aside from the exorcist thing, he does the "mundane" sort of preaching in a monastery. He's Rin's father in two senses of the word.
* HeroicSacrifice: He basically killed himself to stop Satan from kidnapping Rin.
* HeroicWillpower: Satan has been trying to possess him for years pre-series. He always failed because Fujimtoto's will was too strong. Unfortunately, losing his temper with his adoptive son (enough to hit him) turned out to be enough of a MyGodWhatHaveIDone moment to give an opening.
* HyperAwareness: Downplayed, but he immediately noticed that Rin saw the coal tar - revealing that his seal is definitely too weak to contain his demonic powers - which made him follow after him.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Rough, crude, and a bit abrasive, especially in flashbacks before he adopted Rin and Yukio. At the same time, he helped the Myoo Dharani survive the demonic plague inflicting them (only demands payment afterwards and not before he starts caring for everyone) and he was ''injured'' at the time. He also [[spoiler: lied on his mission report about where Shura came from.]]
* MarshmallowHell: He is on the receiving end of one during a flashback in chapter 78. Shura takes her top off and shoves her bare breasts in Shiro's face after he tells her to respect herself more and to stop throwing herself at men.

* BigDamnHeroes: In episode 25 to save the main heroes.

* JerkAss: To put it bluntly, when he gets called in to research or interrogate someone, he starts getting vicious. While interrogating a spy he will even bring in their innocent family in order to get the information he wants. He later threatened a group of priests to get answers, despite having knowledge that speaking of it would kill them.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: After his introduction to the main cast he reveals himself to be pretty tolerant and even understanding of demons and explicitly states his reason for being an exorcist is because he "loves this world".
* LackOfEmpathy: He mentions he has trouble caring about other people, to where he finds demons more interesting.
* NiceHat: He's always wearing a hat that obscures his eyes.
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: Most people call him Lightning.
* RazorWind: Uses sylphs in this manner during an interrogation.
* RedBaron: His Nickname comes from his title "The Master of Lightning".
* TheSmartGuy: Quickly figures out various things, including who's behind the [[spoiler: Gehenna Gate in Russian]] and plans things out for the interrogation so he ''will'' win. Definitely contrasts him with Angel. He's also capable of screwing with Arias and even making up Fatal Verses for demons that previously didn't have any.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Lewin Light or Ruin Rite? The former is an actual name.
* StreetSmart: Very good at manipulating people, on the fly thinking, and keep calm no matter what. In fact, he's so visibly good at this that [[spoiler: Ryuji requests to be made his apprentice for this very reason.]]
* SummonMagic: He's a Tamer in contract with a Upper-tier air elemental, [[ShockAndAwe Furfur]], as well as lower level [[BlowYouAway sylphs]]. He's capable of summoning them without a circle or incantation, supposedly because he's befriended them. He even created a Fatal Verse to banish them if needed.

!Kyoto/Myōō Dharani

The Most High Priest and Ryuji's father.

* AFatherToHisMen: Is definitely this to the members of the Myōō Dharani as shown when [[spoiler: he shows up BigDamnHeroes style to save Mamushi.]]
* BrokenPedestal: To Ryuji and [[spoiler: Mamushi]] due to how he distances himself from exorcist work and the temple group.
* CoolOldGuy: No matter how badly he's treated or how his temple is insulted he just smiles and stays calm to try and keep Ryuji from being discouraged.
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: That odd, slightly perverted and almost wimpy guy over there? He is the head priest of the Myōō Dharani and if you give him a reason, he will show you that he ''definitely'' earned it.
* PlayingWithFire: Through his familiar Karura, he wields fire.
* RebuiltPedestal: The events of the Kyoto arc reveal what he really intends and desires, allowing Ryuji to regain his faith in his father.
* SecretKeeper: He holds all the secrets of the Myōō Dharani [[spoiler: and it is such that is the source of his contract with Karura.]]

An Upper Second Class Exorcist and the 2nd son of the Shima family.

* BelligerentSexualTension: With Mamushi. Emphasis on the Belligerent part as [[spoiler: even after they are engaged, Mamushi scratches up his face.]]
* BigBrotherMentor: To his younger brothers he is a good teacher. He also acts like this towards Ryuji and Konekomaru, even in childhood, but not so much to [[TheUnfavourite Renzo]]. Though that's partially because while Juuzo looks up to his deceased older brother Takezo, Renzo doesn't, resulting in a gape between them.
* FoolishSiblingResponsibleSibling: The responsible level headed [[RedOniBlueOni blue oni]] to Kinzou's more foolish red oni.
* FriendToAllChildren: His profile notes him to be one, and in flashbacks, he's shown to be protective and caring towards a younger Renzou, Ryuji, and Konekomaru.
* NiceGuy: He's genuinely a good guy and quite polite too.
* VictoriousChildhoodFriend: To [[spoiler: Mamushi, after the Kyoto arc they get together and are now engaged.]]

The fourth son of the Shima family, Renzō's older brother and a Middle Second-Class exorcist.

* BuxomIsBetter: His reasoning for not accepting Juuzo wanting to marry Mamushi is because she has small breasts.

* ArchnemesisDad: While he may be Rin and Yukio's father he is the Big Bad of the series.
* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: The ruler of Gehenna, first of the eight demon kings, and is so powerful his mere presence destroys most of his human hosts.
* AxCrazy: First appearance in the manga and anime ''reeks'' of this. In the anime, [[spoiler: after possessing Yukio and playing pyromaniac he seriously keeps up that appearance. Yet with [[MoralityPet Yuri]], he was quite sane and even inquisitive.]]
* BigBad: The king of Gehenna, leader of the demons, and the primary cause of Rin's conflict.
* BlueAndOrangeMorality: [[spoiler:Oh, Satan. When Yuri said she dreamed of a world where demons and humans could live together, she didn't mean that you should [[TheEndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt turn Assiah into a wasteland in the process]]. Mephisto's younger brother and another son of Satan, known as the "Earth King". He seems rather detached and childish and doesn't care much about Rin, preferring to go tour Japan.

* AnimeHair: He has a horn/spike hairstyle similar to [[ShamanKing Tao Ren's]].
* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: He's only 7th or 8th highest ranking of ''all'' demons in terms of strength, making him one of the ''weakest'' of the demon kings, but he is ''still'' a demon king.
* BerserkButton: A good way to get him serious or into a fight is to laugh at him. So don't laugh at him. ''Ever.''
* BewareTheSillyOnes: He may be odd but he can break a man's arm by poking it and kill any exorcist who tries to stop him.
* BigBrotherBully: In a matter of speaking, towards Rin. They're half-brothers after all, and he beat the kid senseless.
* BigEater: He is often seen eating junk food and candy whenever he appears in but is one of the skinniest members of the cast.
* BigOlEyebrows: Absurdly shaped and large.
* PutOnABus: Disappears after his big fight with Rin in ch13. [[spoiler: He reappears later briefly in both ch39 and ch44, before finally returning at the end of ch82.]]

If ThePowerOfFriendship hadn't come through, not only would have all the exorcists there died (which includes not only Ryuji himself but his friends and family) Kyoto would have suffered under a terrible demon plague that might have spread to the rest of Japan before the Order could defeat or re-seal the Impure King. Damn.

So for all the trouble Izumo went through, she gained absolutely nothing she was fighting for, has no access to the power she should have been able to inherit and loses what few family ties she thought she had left, leaving her unable to do anything but cry over the unfairness of it all to Shiemi.]]
