During said fights, he manages to practically kill Ichigo ''twice''.

* TheLawOfDiminishingDefensiveEffort: When he fights an exhausted Ichigo, he realizes that he can simply grab Tensa Zangetsu and muses that he wasted energy evading it beforehand. He's visibly shocked when Neliel easily cuts him. Kenpachi starts out doing no better than Ichigo, leading Nnoitra to repeatedly boast that Kenpachi's blade will never cut him, but takes evasive action when he gets pinned down and nearly stabbed in the face. When Kenpachi lampshades this trope by pointing out that obviously must have seen some danger, Nnoitra brushes off his evasion as something that any trained warrior would naturally do.
