However, he still wins if Korosensei either doesn't try to save him, or evades the shot, as Karma will still die and Korosensei will have failed as a teacher. Korosensei, then, manages to save him by forming a web out of his tentacles and covering them with adhesive mucus to restrain Karma from shooting him.

Despite that, or perhaps because of it, he is considered to be one of the best assassins-in-training in the class.

Nagisa's long-time classmate who joined late due to being suspended from school for trashing his teacher's office. Though this depends on his "rival", he can be StrongButUnskilled when up against the more naturally talented Nagisa. But according to Itona, he is WeakButSkilled compared to [[PowerfulButIncompetent Terasaka]], if we're ''only'' talking raw energy and physique-wise. * SociopathicHero: Unlike Nagisa, he isn't just capable of violence, but enjoys it. A lot. It's scarily obvious he gets a thrill out of dealing physical or psychological torture, and his victims can end up injured or in serious pain. Thankfully, he has enough of a moral compass that he strictly limits his violence to anyone who dares to threaten others, especially his classmates.
** Subverted during chapters 147 to 149 with [[spoiler:Nagisa]] of all people, although in context it was within grounds. Karma admits that [[spoiler:Nagisa's natural killing talent scared him so much he's had to suppress the urge to beat Nagisa up in pre-emptive self-defense]], which he couldn't bring himself to actually do when the playing field was obviously unbalanced. When the [[spoiler:Civil War Game]] ends up giving him an actual opportunity to do so, [[FamilyUnfriendlyViolence he does ''not'' hold back]], and the manic grin he has on for the majority of the fight is borderline disturbing.

* YourWorstMemory: When he launches a SuicideAttack on Koro-sensei, he exclaims that he can see that unforgettable moment a teacher let him down and broke his promise to protect him, with a psychotic laugh, as if [[DissonantLaughter his life is flashing in front of his eyes]]. That... traumatizing memory was the defining moment Karma lost his trust in teachers.

* SilentScapegoat: [[spoiler:He isn't the one who blew up the Moon as he claims -- it was a lab rat transplanted with antimatter generating cells, sent on a satellite to the Moon as part of an experiment to test the effects of aging on the cells which had GoneHorriblyWrong.]]

* IcyBlueEyes: Whenever his bloodlust takes over, his usaly kind innocent baby blues turn in to peircing gems that can bring even a pro to a stand still

* InsecureLoveInterest: Nagisa has such a low self-esteem that he thinks there's no way a girl falls for him. He actually thinks Kayano might hate him for [[spoiler:kissing her.]]

* ArcVillain: While not exactly a straight up villain, he was definitely an antagonist to Koro-sensei in Chapters 4-6 (Season 1 Episode 3).

* AxCrazy: In the beginning of the series, he has shown a crazy obsession for killing Koro-sensei and is always keeping some sort of a weapon with him for that. It gets toned down after he learns to respect his teacher.
* BadassBoast: To no one's surprise, he has some of those from time to time. After his first encounter with Koro-sensei he says, "Don't run away, Koro-sensei. I'll show you what it means to be killed" complete his AnimalMotif, a [[SnakesAreSinister snake eye]], in the background. He also delivers the lines, "You're not gonna rank in the first place, ''I'' will" to Gakushuu Asano, ''even after'' previously failing to beating him and receiving a good dose of a HumblePie. And yes, not without sticking his tongue out, of course.
* {{Bishonen}}: Many of the girls state that he's pretty good looking and would've been a ladykiller id it weren't for his psychopathic tendencies.
* BitingTheHandkerchief: PlayedForDrama, but him biting his [[spoiler:test papers]] is a clear sign of how upset he is over [[spoiler:failing to beat Asano Jr. in the math portion of the first term finals, and on top of that performing worse in the midterms when Class 3-E had a handicap.]] This is omitted in the anime adaptation, as he only crumples them.
* TheBGrade: A bit downplayed in the anime, but he leaves the class immediately after eveyone's test results got revealed then he is seen [[spoiler:crumpling his own test papers]] all alone by a tree. The manga plays it straight with him going far as [[spoiler:biting the corner of his exam papers]].

* BrutalHonesty: Goes well with his direct and courageous nature, as he has no qualms about pointing out people's flaws to their face regardless of whether it hurts them or not. For example, when the whole class is cautious about mentioning the weird accent a dangerous assassain had, Karma casually asks the assassain about it like he is asking about the weather. The rest of the class, then, expresses gratitude for Karma's existence.
* BloodKnight: He is usually the first one who gets involved in a fight, even when he hasn't agitated for it in the first place. And just [[http://www.mangareader.net/assassination-classroom/65/13 look at his face]] while engaged in real combat with an adult assassin! Koro-sensei notes that Karma prefers fightig opponents all-out, over executing a covert assassination.

** Near the end of the series, Korosensei interrupts one of Karma's fights and gives him a talk about how violence is not always the answer. He swallows his own pride when dealing with [[spoiler:Craig Hojo's Wolfpack]], he bows to them and apologizes in English so they can understand and even obeys when they tell him to recite the apology in Japanese to mock him. Consequently, they let Yada go after having a good laugh over Karma's behaviour.
** Terasaka gives him a good dose after defeating Itona using Karma's plan. Karma refers to himself as Terasaka's boss, who is none too pleased with the statement, causing him to throw Karma down into the water while the rest of the class splashes him.

* EmptyEyes: Karma's eyes lack the shine his classmates have, making him appear just a bit... ''off'' compared to the others. The only other characters like this are Asano and his father. All three of them pretty much qualify as manipulative psychopaths...

* FearlessFool: "Fool" may be a strong word, but he is reckless and fearless. He admitted to Okuda that his lack of fear scares him, as he feels he's incapable of being alert, which he realizes could cost him dearly in certain situations.

* FirstNameBasis: Most of his classmates, as well as Koro-sensei, call him by his first name. He's called by his last name only very occassionally.
* {{Foil}}: Gakushuu might be one being set up for him, seeing as both students are the strongest of their respective classes. The fact that [[spoiler:Karma lost to him during the first-term finals]] really got to him. Their parallelism is particularly noticeable in the anime where design choices have made them look nearly identical at a glance, aside from their hair and eye colors. Both of them also experience a WakeUpCall moment.

* GuileHero: His EstablishingCharacterMoment has him offer Koro-sensei an introductory handshake... with a hand that's secretly covered in anti-sensei fragments. Other highlights include his plan in Chapter 49.

* HellishPupils: His pupils turn to unnatural snake-like ones before he begins to relentlessly taunt Nagisa in the 17th episode of the 2nd season.

* IShallTauntYou: A common tactic of Karma's that he's very skilled in. If he isn't doing it himself he's coaching others in how to do it.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Karma is initially introduced as a lunatic who was suspended for his problematic behavior at school. However, it's soon revealed the he actually had been a BullyHunter, in addition to being an excellent student. What landed him in Class 3-E wasn't his penchant for mayhem, but rather siding with a Class E student who was being bullied.
* KarmicTrickster: Not that his name and habit of hunting bullies isn't a warning... and you do need that warning for when he gets serious. Do not provoke him -- [[LetsGetDangerous mayhem ensues]].

* TheLeader: Type I for [[spoiler:Class E's Red Team]]. He's surprisingly an excellent one too, as he's able to recognize both the strengths and weaknesses of his classmates and how to put said traits to good use.
* ALessonInDefeat: His scores slip during the first term finals because he was arrogant about his intelligence and didn't study hard enough to succeed with the increased difficulty. Fortunately, he takes the lesson to heart, and starts working much harder from then on.
* ManiacTongue: He LOVES to stick his tongue out every time he's being his crazy, playful self, it's like an "[[SillyMeGesture I'm so silly" gesture]] of his own. Also doubles as a CharacterTic.

* MusclesAreMeaningless: He has a perfectly average build, and yet is the most physically powerful student in the class, even more so than the muscular Terasaka. He can even pose a threat to trained adults. [[spoiler:And when Nagisa gets him in a tricky choke hold, Karma is able to quickly stand up despite Nagisa hanging off his neck and shoulders.]]

** You wouldn't think a fearless, reckless and outgoing guy like him would be friends with a meek, shy and soft-spoken boy like Nagisa, but they are.
** He's also close friends with [[ShrinkingViolet Okuda]], the only girl in the class who doesn't find him scary. In return, Karma doesn't feel the need to be cautious around her, and even confesses to her about his insecurities regarding his lack of fear. The guidebook even refers to their friendship as the most easy going of the male-female relationships in Class E. The oddness of their relationship doesn't go unnoticed by their peers, who are baffled by it as well.
* OralFixation: Chews things -fingernails, paper, whatever- when he's seriously upset.
* ThePrankster: He ''loves'' to play all types of pranks on literally eveyone, like for example him torturing an adult assassain, even after he already defeated and tied him up, by [[CoolAndUnusualPunishment sticking, ghost pepper, the spiciest pepper in the world, up his nose]] of all places. This is often combined with his mischievous ManiacTongue face.
* PintSizedPowerhouse: He can effortlessly subdue [[BigGuy Terasaka]] using one hand, despite being barely half his size. Inverted, as Karma's not that short since he is 175cm (5'8"), which is an average height for a Japanese teenage boy, while Terasaka is only barely taller at 180cm (5'10") but is bulkier in comparison.

* {{Sadist}}: Coming in hand-in-hand with his BloodKnight tendencies, Karma clearly gets kicks out of bringing cruel and unusual harm to people, and often looks for excuses to get involved in fights or pull nasty tricks. His propensity for violence is undeniable, though, as during the [[spoiler:class Civil war game]] Karma's inner monologue displays a disturbing amount of genuine, ''gleeful'' desire to beat [[spoiler: Nagisa]], one of his closest friends, to a bloody pulp.

Their clash in opinions kickstarts the Civil War games arc.

* UnskilledButStrong: In comparison to Nagisa, who has more natural talent as an assassin [[spoiler:and got Karma trapped in a flying triangular choke as soon as Karma grabbed him in their fight, but Karma is able to stand up even with Nagisa dangling from his neck and almost punch back all from sheer brute strength.]]

* WeakButSkilled: [[DownplayedTrope Downplayed]]. While he is quite athletic, he's physically outmatched by a lot of his classmates and has to rely on his wit and martial art skills to win most of his battles. [[LampshadeHanging Lampshaded]] by Itona when he was comparing him with [[DumbMuscle Terasaka]].
* XanatosGambit: Tries this to kill Korosensei. The plan goes that he will jump off a cliff holding an Anti-Sensei gun, so when Korosensei goes to save him, he will kill his teacher. However, he still wins if Korosensei either doesn't try to save him, or evades the shot, as Karma will still die and Korosensei will have failed as a teacher. Luckily for both of them, Korosensei saves him by forming a web out of his tentacles and covering them with adhesive mucus to save and restrain Karma from shooting him.
* YellowEyesOfSneakiness: Karma has yellow-gold eyes, and is most dangerous for his high intelligence and prankster tendencies.

* FatalFlaw: She is absolutely, unrepentantly driven by emotion. Because of this, [[spoiler:she attempts suicide to get revenge for her sister, nearly murders an innocent man, doesn't anticipate Nagisa's "counterattack" (or the fact that it would work ''because'' she felt deeply for him), and later has a HeroicBSOD when [[http://mach20.org/slide/read/assassination_classroom/en/0/142/page/8 her emotions conflict]] with one another. Her plan would probably have ''worked'' if she hadn't gotten so wrapped up in "Kayano"'s emotions and mindset.]]
