* BecomingTheMask: Downplayed, but in the “Eye of The Beholder” where he has to pretend to be female to win a beauty pageant, he starts to act feminine and makes a small effort to become beautiful such as the old {{Cucumber Facial}}. He even starts to respect women for more than their looks. This is all very short lived.
* BeenThereShapedHistory: Courtesy of being hundreds of years old and having time traveled repeatedly, Fu Dog claims to have done a lot for the history of the world.

* {{Oracle}}: Both of them; Kara can only predict good events, while Sara can only predict bad ones.

* WakeUpGoToSchoolSaveTheWorld: {{Deconstructed}} in "Being Human," where she temporarily takes over as the American Dragon...and cracks under the pressure in less than week. However, she gains a newfound respect for her older brother and even defends him against their grandfather, pointing out the severity and all the personal losses Jake's had to go through as a result of it.

* AlwaysSomeoneBetter: [[SubvertedTrope Subverted.]] While she ''is'' a better student and is shown to have natural talent with her Dragon Skills, it's also shown that this is specifically because she doesn't have to WakeUpGoToSchoolSaveTheWorld like Jake does on a daily basis. After Jake temporarily gave up his role as the American Dragon, Haley had to assume the responsibility...and cracked under the pressure in less than a week. This helps her gain a new-found respect for her older brother and leads her to [[CallingTheOldManOut calling out their grandfather]] in "Being Human."

* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: Unlike most ManChild fathers in cartoons, Jonathan is rather strict in parenting and whenever Jake is being disobedient or lies about something (usually due to dragon business), that is when Jonathan put his foot down and punishes his son.

* PowerStereotypeFlip: both have [[PowerIncontinence randomly occurring]] visions of the future. Kara is a dour {{Goth}} who can only see the good things about to happen while Sara is a perpetually sunny {{Pollyanna}} who can only see the bad things about to happen. This is actually explained in the show as the former having all the joy sucked out of life since every good surprise is spoiled for her ahead of time, while the latter can't help but be happy since every second the horrible things she sees ''aren't'' happening is absolutely fantastic in comparison.

* AdultsAreUseless: Played with, due to his manchild personality and easily excitable character, he’s not always the best to do things. Susan, Lao-shi and Jake lampshades that Jonathan isn’t the best at dealing with stress, case in point: Jonathan at one-point panics when he got his sweater on backwards and had to have help getting it right.

* ThrowTheDogABone: In "Magic Enemy #1", Jake takes him to the Magus Bazaar where he finally gets to interact with real magical creatures, going full on {{Adorkable}} mode. It's both silly and heartwarming.

* {{Adorkable}}: Surprisingly, one of them is this, becoming excited over simply being in New York and reciting the old “If I can make it here, I can make it anywhere!” at their arrival. One of the brothers mentions the two others just love the city and can’t help getting hyped.

* CharlesAtlasSuperpower: She has amazing agility and durability. The only possible explanation is her years of Huntsclan training.

* PowerIncontinence: Neither of the sister can control when the visions hit them, they’re not even safe in their own dreams from the future.

* MellowFellow: He has a very relaxed demeanor.

* {{Adorkable}}: Definitely can have his moments, such as when he tries to do girl talk with Trixie or when he gets particularly lovesick in regards to Rose.

* {{Hypocrite}}: Like Jake, he has dated women that turned out to be enemies but he thought Rose was distracting Jake from his dragon futies. Jake even mentions this when trying to break it to him gently that his latest girlfriend may be the kelpie they're hunting.

* ShipperOnDeck: Mixed with some {{FantasticRacism}}, as in "Hero Of the Hourglass" he tried, very ham-fisted and unsuccessfully, to set his daughter up with somebody else than Jonathan, simply because the person was a dragon as opposed to a normal human (He didn’t even know the person).
** Averted with his views on the relationship between Jake and Rose as he's not supportive of it and only tries to break them up when he deems Jake is too distracted by Rose to take his duties seriously.

* MultiEthnicName: Subverted. His first name is American while his last name has Chinese origin, but the former is from his father's side, and he is not Chinese.

* MundaneUtility: His grandfather trains him by using his dragon powers to do housechores.
